Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Well, I guess it's about priorities. A little thing like an annoying screen reader bug (which I can spend hours bitching about, naturally) pales to the nonsense MS is doing, at least for me, and yes I generally do have patience. And of course there is always the ever-present robustness of the platform itself, which is just wonderful, and puts the whole issue of screen reading into perspective. But you're right, the flip side of that coin is that, irrespective of the technical demerit of Windows screen readers (another thing I can spend hours ranting about) they do at least provide adequate accessibility to the platform to get most things done very efficiently. That is pretty deserving of praise all by itself, given the means they use to do that, but it doesn't distract from the ugliness.

Yeah, bugs like this are also part of the reason I don't use OS X regularly. I don't know what it is exactly but it seems like even with all the bullshit MS has been cramming into Windows the screen reader experience is still much, much smoother. Or maybe I just lack patience.

Activities. They broke 'em badly on El Capitan. They were already a bit flaky on Yosemite, but on El Cap they are nearly unusable because the activity is not switching when you switch apps, at least for me with an activity used for Safari. That and the other silly El Cap bugs, like the Safari text editing malarkey.

I didn't disable the sounds in El Cap; seemed fast enough for me, at least with Alex. On yosemite it's definitely slower, but I've got used to it after downgrading but leaving the sounds on. I think they provide vital info you can't lose, but I understand your desire to get them out of the way for speed reasons. And the Tab key usually moves pretty consistently, so give that a try. You can also use hotspots and the Find command. Read the VO help and try stuff out. If you haven't already yet, read the "Getting Started" manual, which covers most of the important stuff.I posted a zip of my Yosemite and El Cap VO preferences here. The one without "Yosemite" in the name is, of course, the El Cap one.

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Well yeah if you've got any tips to reduce latency I'd appreciate it (already disabled the sounds of course) but I guess I just value sheer speed and smoothness more. I also really don't like having to step through every element on the screen to get where I want to go when exploring; it seems like I have to focus more on where things are rather than getting things done. And sometimes focus isn't where I expect it do be when using quicknav, I'm assuming that's a bug in Voiceover. But sure if you want to send them I'll see if it works any better.

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Well yeah, different spokes for different folks and all that. I can't disagree with your conclusions if you're sure you can't improve on your situation. OS X works for me because I think, for now at least, that the robustness more than compensates for the frustrations in the accessibility. Most of my issues come to bugs and sometimes speed, although I personally appreciate the way navigation works better (because it gives you a nice overview of the screen layout). Likewise I actually quite prefer the ChromeVox keystrokes. It bugs me that Windows screen readers are essentially single-focus, which just strikes me as lame, even though they generally perform better and get the job done, kinda. But yeah, in the end it's about taste. As always, I'm happy to answer questions. If you'd like me to send you my Yosemite or El Capitan preferences for a last-ditch effort, let me know.

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

I have all that set up, it just seems that no matter what I do VO is way too verbose and not as responsive as NVDA is under Windows. There are tiny delays when using quick keys or trackpad gestures that annoy me to no end, and Voiceover navigation just seems inefficient to me; I know it's supposed to be faster as you can skip past elements like toolbars you don't want to examine by not interacting with them and it's nice in theory, but it just doesn't do enough for me in practice. And Safari is far from the only app I have issues with. Dito with Chromevox, it's just way, way too inefficient for me. Like I said I really want to like OS X, I really do. It's fast, it's Unix-based, it's optomized for my hardware, it has system-wide spell checking and dictation, and so much more awesomeness...but I just can't deal with Voiceover as a primary screen reader. Maybe if there was a native Eloquence port for OS X there wouldn't be responsiven
ess issues, but that's obviously never happening. Plus Firefox has some add-ons I really like, so one more reason I don't want to switch to Safari.

@Wanderer: You can set up Safari to have keys in Safari that behave in like windows screenreaders do, and set Safari up so you can tab through links. Or , use chrome and Chromevox, because that's a good and fast browser as well.

I really want to like OS X and I think I've given it a fair chance but I just can't. There are little delays when using quick navigation keys in Safari that just aren't there on Windows, and I really don't like the way you're forced to navigate element by element. I'll boot to OS X if I'm on battery and want to play a lot of media or something as the battery life is a bit better than Windows, but there are too many issues that keep me from adopting it as my primary system.

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Windows 10 the new XP? Erm, nah. Not unless you like constantly looking over your shoulder for the next incoming arrow of misfortune, anyway. And then there's all the privacy concerns, of course. No, I'll stay on 8.1 thanks--most of what's good about 10, and just use Classic Shell to cover up the ugliness. OS X is (at the moment, anyway) my primary system. I use Windows only when I absolutely have to.PAE is an X86 memory model. It lets you map more than 4 GB of physical memory in the system. Most CPUs support it.Finally, regarding processor support, it's Skylake or better that are exclusive to Win10. People with Broadwell or less are fine; if you have a Skylake CPU, you get discarded if you're on 7/8.1 some time in 2018. After that time, you only get security-related fixes, so if you want Win7/8.1 to run to full potential you should stick to anything less than Skylake. See this for a good explanation.

I'm guessing that unless there are fundamental changes to the X86 archetecture with those processors older versions of Windows will still run on them, they just won't be able to take advantage of features like virtualization, power management and encryption. So more of a concern if it's a laptop.

It may be a fast operating system, but it sure as hell ain't the new xp. Not until the adware and the trackers in telemetry get removed. Plus, it's a bit more mobile now considering that there is now an app market, windows phone and even xbox1 are all based on this windows 10 foundation. It's not the xp we know and love. Sure, it's better than 8, 8.1 but not quite xp. As far as compatibility is concerned, though, I will agree it is a very fast-running operating system that can run on anything from a virtual machine to any system running 7 or above.

And don't forget, Microsoft themselves said that Windows 10 would run on almost anything that could run Windows 7 or 8 and I believe that Windows 7 only specified a minimum clock speed as the minimum system requirement for the processor.Yup, here are the system requirements from Microsoft:For Windows 7:• 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor• 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)• 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)• DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driverThe system requirements for Windows 10 are pretty much the same as for Windows 7.In my opinion, anyone that says you need something with a fairly current processor is just trying to sell you something you may not need.

You might find it worthwhile to upgrade that laptop to at least 8.1 if you don't like 10; it's actually a bit faster than 7 and automatically cleans old components when they are superseded by updates, so Windows (theoretically) won't get bigger and bigger over time as 7 does.

Yeah, Haswell or better will stop being supported in 2017, I think it is. So people wishing to stay on 7/8/8.1 had better get themselves rigs with Broadwell or less if they wish to keep running those OSs until 2020 (for 7) and 2023 (for 8.1).Yep, Win2000 was all kinds of awesome. It didn't have the best hardware compatibility record, but my God, fast, stable, and kicked arse all the time. It was, after all, a professional workstation operating system--what more is there to say, really? When Windows XP came out, my old Pentium II 400 MHz struggled to run it, but because the screen readers now all supported the NT family, it became feasible for me to downgrade to 2K, which I duly did. That old machine was a server from that day, in 2001, to 2012 when I had to forcibly retire it, running Linux. Happy days, happy days ...I suppose there is one saving grace: Windows 8 actually toned down the processor usage, to accommodate mobile devices, but trimming the window mana

hi,FYİ,  microsoft continues to support old processors for 10. Any processor that ran vista will run 10. However, for older operating systems, microsoft will no longer support the newer amd processor line and the upcoming intel cannonlake processors.

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Oh yeah! I often wish that XP was still the defacto standard version of Windows. Even better would be Windows 2000! That was a lean and mean operating system. It had no eye or ear candy, was super stable, could play games, and was very fast, and could fit on half a CD and only needed 256MB to run.Even before I lost my vision I didn't like all the eye candy Microsoft was putting in Windows. To me a computer is a tool, it doesn't need to win any beauty contests, it just needs to be functional. So starting with Windows XP almost the first thing I do after installing Windows is to set the theme to Windows Classic. In XP I even whent so far as to disable the theme service after setting the theme to Windows Classic so the theme couldn't be changed. If it had been possible, I'd have removed all the theme crap.Something I discovered is that the code base that makes up Windows hasn't really gotten that much larger since Windows XP, the reason Windows
Vista and later need a DVD instead of a CD as XP and earlier could fit on is because of the giggabytes of graphics and audio data that is needed to support the newer skinned user interfaces full of useless eye and ear candy. As far as I'm concerned,, all that eye and ear candy is just a useless and shameful waste of processor power.

Apparently, Windows 10 will only run on newer processors. I can't speak for other processors like AMD, but Microsoft is apparently tired of supporting old intel processors and won't make Windows work with them. I heard that 7 would not be supported on the new Skylake processors or anything newer. I don't know if this is true or if I even have it completely correct. I have one foot in Windows land for games, but that's about it. I will show no interest until we have a talking installer and Narrator substantially improves.

Yep, basically what Chris said.Win7 is the new XP basically because people are sticking with the worst of a bad bunch. I agree, Vista service pack 2. Better to move to Win8.1 with Classic Shell; then you can get everything Windows has to offer. Only it's still Windows ...XP is old and obsolete, but it still works. It won't die, because for a lot of people it still manages to tick all the boxes. All these intentional XP refuseniks have simply concluded that there is nothing in yonder Windows upgrade direction. Developers are tired of supporting XP's antiquated APIs, and are simply forcibly removing support for it, following Google's lead. I don't blame them at all, but given that XP is still filling a need for some people, I'd say it was rather unfortunate. I wonder how long Firefox will hold out.Apple obsolete operating systems faster because back-compatibility isn't the same priority it is in the WinTel world. Yes, there wer
e more releases, and yes, those releases were tied to certain hardware, at the earliest, which means that new hardware pushes you onto a new release. But ultimately, Apple are simply quite ruthless in dropping obsolete software. They don't want to be lumbered with supporting it. In the case of OS X (or MacOS) that's not such a big deal because Apple doesn't change everything, again, every five minutes. But it also means that if your hardware is no longer supportable with newer software due to an architecture change, well, you're SOL. It is here that Windows, with its ever-lasting compatibility, comes in handy. Or did--it's not clear to me that contemporary Windows is, in fact, so different from OS X, anyway.

It's still good for games, which is my only purpose for Windows these days. If only Microsoft would have stuck with that interface and simply enhanced it instead of creating more eye candy and lots of unnecessary crap. Who ever said Windows 7 is the new XP is correct. I don't know if I agree, since 7 just feels like a glorified Vista to me. Either way, Windows is in my past. If Microsoft doesn't care to provide an adequate screen reader and relies on third parties, I'm done. Everyone else has done the right thing. Narrator still has a ways to go. How about a talking installer anyone? Hint hint?Still, XP is awesome! I don't care if it's no longer supported. THe fact is that it has revived an old Mac that Apple simply threw away back when Lion came out. I'm not going to use the OS as my daily driver, but for playing some games and running other offline programs, it works just fine. I'm honestly surprised Dropbox and Firefox still work.
Why is it that applications still work on a 14 year old operating system, but don't work on Snow Leopard, which is just about as old as 7? Is it that Apple cranks out way too many versions? It's funnny like that.

I for one say about time! Say what you will about the later versions of Windows (and there's plenty wrong with them, as with everything), XP is well and truly done. Just to bring this back once again to say that i think the POSE-ready updates still work, and from what i can tell, havent broke my installation of XP on this old desktop. While i primarily keep it around because the hardware still works great, and its also a good gaming box, for the occasional web browsing the machine does do, i havent had a single issue. Now when the updates were first being used around the time the hack was discovered, the desktop would hang, but that is fixed now it seems.

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

I see my topic is still getting some love, good to see. One thing i noticed through a virtual machine i was playing with was that you can still browse the net with firefox and windows 2000. This is interesting to me because it really drives the point home that even though a version of windows isnt officialy getting updates any more, it doesnt mean you still cant be productive with it. Microsoft would have you believe otherwise, telling you that you are at extreme risk of security problems like viruses and being hacked. I would simply counter that by saying, sure, if your ignorant, you can certainly be hacked. If your the type of person to go in to the depths of the internet to some odd ball torrent sites, or who knows where, i would think that the risk would be greater than if you only did some day to day browsing like going to audio games .net. I wouldnt advise doing your banking or online shopping with an unsupported version of windows, but fear not, you
can still be pretty productive im sure, even with windows 2000 or xp in the case of this topic. I also have done this with windows mobile 6.1, even finding a workaround to play flash videos. Oh, and also one more thing, i found a site that seems to be a corner of the world who loves and thinks that windows 98 SE is the best thing since sliced bread. Someone even devised some type of kernel update allowing a windows 98 user to view modern web pages. Its funny, because it goes against everything that software giants would have you believe, yet, people still love there dinosaur computers, and use them day to day.

I really think their partnering with Neuance did that. To be fair, vocalizer isn’t as quirky as Ivona or Accapela, in my opinion, but still, Alex does sound, slightly, more like a Vocalizer voice. I really really hope Apple completely breaks with Neuance and does everything themselves, because when they do things themselves, it all, just, works.

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Interesting. Well I still think Apple’s applications are way more powerful than Windows ones. I love that I can copy and paste any attachment right from the finder to the email client, and make links that use the text as its “click here” type thing, something windows mail couldn’t do, and it all works, just works. One thing I don’t like though is that developers of audio games don’t seem to know the power of the mac. For example, if a user turns on “control voiceover with applescript” a developer can send text right to voiceover, not just using the system voice. I’m reminded over and over how mostly customizable voiceover is, and how powerful it is. You can’t possibly resize things, something pretty useful in garageband, in windows screen readers, and you definitely can’t drag and drop, something pretty useful with applications. No more needing to open up cmd just to send a file right to an application before the app opens… GXSCC anyone? Nah, sound fonts are better anyway, even for midi-to-NES like stuff. Plus, Alex, the voice on the mac, is downright awesome! The only natural voice on windows that even remotely reacts to exclamations is, uh, Microsoft Sam. Crazy isn’t it? But Alex, Fred, Bruce, Vicki and all other Macintalk voices work wonderfully with it! And yes, there’s a mudding client for the mac, called Mudder, which I use for alteration. No, its not Mush-Z, but it does well enough, and reads automatically, using voiceover. Yes, using the actual voiceover speech, instead of the system voice, unlike RS-games, ugh.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178803#p178803

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

I’d just go with the mac. After all, updates to Mac OS are free, unlike for Windows. Plus, Apple doesn’t destroy old stuff, they make it better, like all the voices in Macintalk. Fred, Bruce, and Vicki are all old voices, but still are there, and good. Plus, Mac is the only OS I know of with system-wide spellchecking.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178552#p178552

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Unfortunately, Apple seem intent on destroying functionality and reducing the platform to iOS-level competence, which does not give me a great deal of confidence about its future. I think its better than 7, at least for the end-user, but its hard to argue that XP was a good old dog, while it lasted.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178619#p178619

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

OK, correction: it does work, if you make sure that the registry file is three lines, and yes I got the newest updates. But ...At least in my VM, the machine boots, but the desktop takes a little while to appear. Im not sure why this is. Proceed cautiously. The other option, I was thinking, was to go with Windows Server 2003 as a desktop, which is still supported and has enough of the XP runtime to be useful. But, I fear that I am perhaps taking this all a bit too seriously, and that I should perhaps just quit now, while the goings good.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175613#p175613

This is almost too good to be true. By simply tricking Windows Update into thinking youre on XP embedded, you can continue to download and install updates for XP.Holy tripe!URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175550#p175550
