Yeah. For the next version, the rule changes move from an option you select in the menus to one you set in your configuration file. In a sense this is nicer because you don't have to  remember which option you set for every save game. It's just a file in the game directlry with the name 1oom_config_game_cmdline_nop.txt.

I think that you’re misunderstanding, it’s not dying, I’m just not going to be working on the version which includes those changes. I was disappointed to find the work I had done on adding them to the command line game removed, but I’m more interested in getting other peoples help with other aspects of the game, like  combat, rather than focusing on changes that are only going to appeal to a few people.

Firefly, I am afraid that it will, I don’t really feel like forking another version just to keep some changes around, unfortunately. The changes caused some political drama in the community, such as it is. I would rather stick with a version which will get bug fixes, and be able to contribute some of my own, rather than trying to maintain a separate copy just for myself and other interested people.

caio, the game ends when you or someone else manages to secure enough votes to become Master of Orion, that is, gets over 2/3 the votes in the high council. At that point you have a choice between accepting the council ruling or going into a final war, in which it's you against everyone else.Alternatively, the game can end with you conquering all other races, or being conquered. There's no other win conditions. In practice, the council usually votes for a winner before either of the other conditions happen, though if you play really badly it's possible to lose faster.

@Caio: Make sure that you are using the latest Version cause the v-Command had a lot of trouble in older versions.It is up to you, when you want to create new ships. It highly depends on what you want to do with them. For example: Scoutships benefit from good propulsions and better fuel.The point with designing ships is, that if you dont need them, you should not build them. It highly depends on your tech slider. If you create a lot of ships with older technologie they will be old-fashioned after 20 years when you got better shields, weapons and so on.

caio, A command for viewing your own planets already exists. the "V," command is very powerful. In this case, if you do "v py," you'll see your plants.The "p," stands for "planets," and the "y," stands for yours. You can also do "v op," for opponents planets, or ask for unexplored planets, or fleets, or the like. If you use a number with it you'll get planets within that number of parsecs range of your colonies, whereas if you do +numberwitha plus sign in front of the number you'll get worlds within that range of the colony you're currently focused on.As for scrapping ships, no, probably don't scrap your scouts and colony ship, at least. But the rest aren't being used and will be obsolete with new technology anyway.

Hi there,The link in the first post is not quite the newest version, but very close. I'll see if I Can get a newer one out this weekend. There are very few changes from my side, I'm still trying to figure out a way to handle combat sensibly. The newest version when out will properly announce nebula planets, however, which is important for strategic decision making. Firefly has explained the ship movement  syntax. "Fs planetnum shipnums…" where shipnums are the numbers of each class of ship you want to send, starting from the first in the fleet display. Note that you have five pre-made designs to begin with but only a few actual ships, some scouts and a colony ship. The pre-made designs are pretty bad, so I recommend scrapping most of them to make room for higher-tech upgrades.

Ah damn damn damn, i realy should restart my tutorial to give more of you guys an easier start to this absolutely great game.@Caio: Your first scoutships can only reach planets within a range of three parsecs. So find one with the v command. The last ones should be OK. Then keep in mind the  first Number. This is the number for the planet. To send your scout you have to type:fs number 1Replace Number with what you kept in your mind.This will send one of your scoutships.The FS-command is working with the 6 ship columns which you can see with the fleet-command.The last 1 tells the fs-command to send one ship of your first column.HAHA, i hope i remember correctly.

Hi,Okay, this file is a mac release of 1OOM, as of this afternoon. The only major difference from the Windows version is that nebulas are identified when a planet is part of one. To run this, you need to unzip the file, and then go into the directory that was created and run the "Orion," program from a terminal. I could theoretically package this up into an app which can be run from Finder but have not looked into how to do that.I should also note that the fork on which I'm basing my changes had some political arguments a while back, and consequently the changes around the high council and random event options were withdrawn. That might not be of interest to many players, but if anyone wonders where they went, I wasn't involved in that decision.I may at some point decide to maintain my own fork of the game for command-line only changes, but that'snot happening yet. Things are still in flux.

There IS a mac version, actually. I'm doing all my development on the mac, I just didn't know anyone else would have one and be interested. I can package the current code real quick, but be aware you'll need to use the Terminal to play it, which takes a little getting used to.

Hey,By pure coincidence I've been re-visiting this game lately and working on some fixes. I'm slowly becoming more familiar with the way the game code operates. I've got a fix for the view command not identifying nebulas, which is fairly important on occasion.I'm hoping to make my next release all about combat. Hi,The current repo is here. The combat stuff is largely located in ui/cmdline/uibattle.c, but those functions are called by the stuff in the game/ directory.THe basic flow of combat is to print a map display every turn, with symbols like "<." and ">," representing yours and the opponents ship stacks. THe logic behind how those symbols are assigned is a little complicated, but seems to be dependent on race.I hope you have better luck figuring out where to begin with this aspect of things than I have so far.

That bug with the governer isn't that important, the simple workaround is just to not have such a long name. Anything 10 characters and below is fine. Some of the commonly requested items e.g, new filters for the view command are arguably much more critical.Btw, which repo is the work being done on now? Since the author's original gitlab repo is no longer accepting new forks. I'd like to take a look and hopefully even contribute some of these much needed features. I especially want to look at how combat is printed on screen, to maybe see if it could be made more accessible because not being able to participate in this vital part of the game takes out a lot of the fun for me I'll experiment with that prototype that I mentioned this weekend.

Victorious,Something like that sounds theoretically very useful. I don't have the programming chops for it yet, but I imagine it's fairly easy in any high-level language. My experience so far has been with mostly command-line stuff, which is different.I'll try and find some time to investigate your "NerveCentre," bug this week. I suspect I know what's going on, but figuring out a fix is always a little harder than it looks.

I've been thinking about an idea to get a better hang of how the galaxy works. Would like to hear more opinions on whether this could be feasible.I'm thinking of an application which reads a list of coordinates and planet names, and puts that in 2d space. It would then lay it out on a 2d grid and discretize each cell. I could divide the grid so that each grid cell is 2 parsecs wide (2 times 5 units according to the official strategy guide).Lets assume that (0, 0) is the bottom left, and that the galaxy can be 200 x 200 wide or 40 parsecs on each side. Then you could use the arrow keys to move about the grid. When your cursor is on a particular 2 x 2 parsec sector, your position in space would be set to the centre of that sector. When sounds for each planet in that sector are played, it would be relative to the centre of that sector, which should in theory give you a way of understanding how things are laid out. So you would only be hearing things inside that region, and would have to arrow around to explore nearby.

Then when the game starts, type gov.I've been thinking about some ways of how we could get a better sense of the galaxy and how planets are laid out. I'm not sure how helpful it would be if there was a way for a program to take in a list of points, and let you explore that interactively, with 3d audio beacons that play at each position. This would be useful not just for this game.

Also I understand you've contributed some fixes in the past, which repo are they at? I have some experience with C, so would be interested in fixing some of these issues.

Hi All,Victorious, wow, that's a big post, I appreciate the feedback.The planetary governor is new to the 1OOM reimplementation. It does help with the micromanagement, but I'll have to do some searching to figure out where your buffer overflow is. If you could post a save game, I'll see what I can do. There is some documentation on how the governor works, but its' in the \doc directory, which I haven't touched. The map issues are definitely problematic in larger galaxies. Unfortunately the coordinate code is hard for me to understand, it doesn't directly seem to map onto parsecs, as would be most natural. I need to have a look into it and see if I can at least explain it better.The issue of tech descriptions and more of the game text in general is definitely something i've been trying to figure out how to solve. I'm not as familiar with C as I'd like to be, and the game's code is a little baroque. I can just say that I totally agree more of the game text for flavor and tech descriptions would be helpful.I'm still here, even if I have trouble sticking to one project for very long. The game is at least in a more stable state, apart from the few bugs.

Hi,Thanks Xcline for bringing this to our attention. I'm so excited and yet so depressed at the same time once I mastered the interface. Elated because this is probably one of the most complex accessible strategy games that I've found, and depressed because this was first released in the 1990s, so I can't imagine how much more intricate modern 4x games are like. Documentation feedback:1. This game was basically unplayable for me until I understood how the filters could be combined using the view command. The way that the in-game command reference is written would only make sense for someone used to reading documentation for CLI tools, so I think having examples of usage in the accompanying rtf reference would be useful. For example, "v 6 u" shows all unexplored planets, "v YC" shows all your colonies and "v OFT" shows enemy fleets and transport in range of your colony's scanners.2. It took me quite some time to figure out how the fs command was supposed to work, e.g to send 3 ships of design 4 to planet 5, you had to type "fs 5 0 0 0 3". An example would really be helpful here.3. Its not mentioned anywhere that you could refer to planets in 3 ways: by numbers, full name or by an offset. So for e.g, both "l -2" and "g +1" work.4. Could you add some info on how the governer works? Is it a feature in the original game, or one specific to this version? It sounds like it would be useful, especially on this game now where I have to manage 30 planets individually.5. When viewing the output of the fleets command on your own fleets, the numbers are displayed in accordance to the ship design order that you have. How does this work for enemy fleets? For e,g "Dist  8: IN ORBIT [43] (99,176) Tao                   0     0    19     0     0     0  Klackon". This could be a medium ship, or a huge ship potentially if the ordering changed.Bugs:1. attempting to toggle the planetary governer with gov causes the following error for me in some situations: "FATAL: lib_sprintf: buffer too small, need 12, have 12Cfg: saving configuration to '.\1oom_config_game_cmdline_nop.txt". This is also particularly nasty because it doesn't autosave for you on crash, so you get restored to the last save state. It keeps on happening on a specific planet, with 11 chars I suspect its a length limitation.2. I sometimes see the display of incoming "phantom fleets" of my ships when I use the look command while on it. They don't actually show up on the fleets screen and ship count don't change when they supposedly land, so I think this is a bug.There're some things that are much harder because all the information is presented textually:1. I find it really hard to get a sense for the geometry of the galaxy just by using coordinates alone. I think this would be a major problem for these types of 4x games, and not having easy access to information like where the boarders of your sphere of influence are and where it is adjacent to enemies makes certain things really hard. Has anyone found a way around this?2. Have you figured out how to control your ships manually in combat? So far I've always clicked auto resolve, but being able to manually control your own ships is critical for high level play and to properly utilize special devices which I don't think the AI can do for you.Feature requests:1. It would be extremely helpful if there was a filter for fleets with your planet as a destination, which can be combined with the O filter to check for invading enemy fleets. Otherwise, the best that can be done now is to crawl through the huge amount of output from the "v OFT" command. The look command should also show incoming enemy fleets on route to the target if you already have enough tech to be able to see that information with the v command. Similarly, some way of filtering output by race would be nice too.2. Another related idea is to have automatic notifications that an enemy fleet is approaching one of your colonies that appear when you advance to the next turn.3. I think other filters for the v command could also be useful though much less critical. E.g, by habitability, the presence of special bonuses like artifacts etc.4. The technologies screen is missing a display for your tech level.5. When given a choice to choose techs to research from, it would be helpful for the associated long description of the tech to be printed besides its name so that you don't have to look it up elsewhere.6. The look command doesn't display the class of planetary shield present. I understand you do see that info in the original game.

I just wanted to check in here because this game keeps giving me hours of fun. I understand development's on hiatus, but I have a couple thoughts and suggestions. I have no idea how feasible these would be, but here goes:1. I'd love a way to filter enemy ships and planets by race. This could come in handy especially on big maps with fleets going every which way. It'd be nice if I could type something like "v f Meklar", or "v Psilon 6" if I'm in the middle of a war for example and want to find targets without filtering through everyone else's colonies. I find I spend a lot of time scrolling through lists looking for the next place I want to invade and this filter would help a ton with that.2. Similarly, I end up spending a ton of my time scrolling through all the fleets within my scanner range, trying to find out if any of my planets are being invaded. I don't know how this was set up in the original MOO game but I could see how part of this might be a skill you're supposed to learn. still, there has to be a better way than reading through a list of sometimes 30 plus fleets every turn until you hear one of your colony names show up somewhere. I'm thinking either an automatic message when scanners detect something en route to a player colony or, perhaps easier, another filter just for fleets headed to player colonies. Maybe that syntax is already there and I've just not figured it out? I'm thinking something like "v f a" (alert, approaching, I don't know I just haven't seen A used in the filters anywhere), but really any kind of way to see just the fleets enr route to my planets would be a godsend.3. It'd be nice to get a notification when a planet builds a missile bases the same way we do with ships. Maybe some people wouldn't like that but I really would.4. Now we're really in nitpick territory but I'd love to be able to adjust multiple production sliders with a single command. I sometimes find myself accidentally pulling production out of eco to build a new ship when I want to pull the points from tech research, or having my increased industrial production pulled from tech research when I want it pulled from ship building. I know I can fine tune this by setting each slider separately and I've gotten enough of a sense for how the computer likes to prioritize my production orders that these mistakes only happen occasionally, but they're still a pain. Rather than having a production lock, I'd love to be able to tell it something like "s e 15; i 30; def 5, t 50" or maybe even "s t -5; i +5." I don't really have a formal computer or math background so maybe this isn't possible, but if so it'd be really nice. Anyway, thanks for your patience with my ramble. If none of this ever comes to fruition, I'm content, this is a hell of a proof-of-concept and I'm super impressed you pulled it off so well, Still, a guy can hope, yeah?

Honestly I'm just having fun with the concept even though I haven't yet figured out a good system for keeping track of everything that's happening all at once in the later game. It's really promising to see that this is even possible with 4x games, so thank you! I'll definitely be happy when this gets a face lift but it's still giving me hours of fun as is. Hi ALl,Yeah, I'm so glad to see people still enjoying this game. I unfortunately have been busier with work than usual lately, and also the development was a bit political, which I thought it best to stay out of. I will try to get back to this, time permitting, but can't promise when.I can try to help with at least some of the concerns you raise though.1. I haven't really found a great solution other than notetaking.2. THere is a scrollback feature in the WINdows console, but it's not as easy to access as it should be. I think a workaround is to increase the number of rows and columns the console displays, which you can do in the properties window. I play on LInux and MAc OS, neither of which have this particular issue in the same way.3. THis is something the game doesn't currently support natively, but it might be possible to do it using console commands, since it's basically just text output. I'll have to experiment a bit. I know on MAc I can just save the terminal log with a single key, but that's harder for WIndows folks.4. COmbat is the bugbear of things as they stand now, unfortunately. I will have to look into it when I have a spare moment.Sorry this isn't as useful as I hoped, but I'm still following this topic and iwll keep people aprised of what's going on.

HAHAHA, yes, the groundconquering breaks the system, hahahaha.We allready talked about a renaming-feature and a command to switch between your own colonys.I only played the humans and the silicoids so far. But i like both races and i think i will like the other races too for their individual style.With humans you can mostly stay out of trouble. Thats realy nice to build good relationships to nearly all other players. And you will have no trouble to keep your self out of any fighting stuff.And i love the silicoids for their ability to land on nearly every atmospher so you can spread out very fast in a short time.

@FireflyHmm, I've not played with the governor. That sounded dirtier than I meant it to, but you get the idea.  As for planet numbering, yeah, I do this too. I've had to end a couple games because I accidentally gave two planets the same name (both times it was planet Four I think, haha, brains are weird). That system also gets thrown out of whack for me when I take over already existing colonies with the ground troops, however, since I can't rename colonies. What's your favorite race to play? I've been having lots of fun with the meklors, but think I might give the Klackons or Psilons a go.

HAHA, hey Audacity! Great name!Firstly, i absolutely agree with you. Moo1 is the best we had in this year. Maybe the best of last year too! Maybe my realy favorite release of all time here!Yes, you count out the main problems we have here.I will try to give you some ideas for one or two of your points.1:My planets all have numeric names. one two three and so on.That helps a lot to keep them all in mind.I try to set every new colony to governormode so i have to check them only in cases of a special need or special event.Fleets are mostly not so very important. Yes, there is a point where you have to check if an enemy fleet is on its way to your planets, but in many cases you can check them with v and its filters.But yes, you are wright, it is a lot of work and i would love to have an eventnotification if something like this happens.2&3: Have you tryed to play around with the contextmenu of the console by pressing alt-space? You can set up the amount of lines and its length. I had some trouble with this cause it themes that changes are often not affecting anything.Yeah, thats strange.A log file would be a interesting and nice idea.4: Not at the moment but Zkline allready has something in mind to make the output a little easier.I am so glad someone here like the game the same i do!So: May your empire grow!

Wow, holy f&^$$ s@@%t! This is amazing. I've spent hours already and will doubtless spend many more as I try to figure out how everything works. I can't imagine all the work and energy that went into this. I have a few thoughts and questions, sorry if any of these have been covered already:1. How do you keep track of all your planets, fleets, and everything that's going on all over the part of the map you know about? I've noticed keeping notes helps but it's a lot to keep track of, does anyone have a way of organizing it all other than just writing everything down?2. I sometimes can't scroll to the start of the list of stuff I see with the view command. Filters seem inconsistent (the distance and range variables definitely give me fewer options, but rarely exactly the distance and range values I request), and I've not found any way around it. I'm using both Jaws and NVDA, but mostly jaws because it seems to give me more text and let me scroll back farther, but it still stops well before I need it to in huge lists of fleets and planets.3. Related to 2, I'm wondering how hard it would be to make the game write a log file which I could have open in another window? Is there some other program or script that might do this with either Jaws or NVDA?4. Has anybody actually figured a way of doing space combat without just auto resolving everything? I read the strategy guide and it seems like manually controlling our fleets would give a lot of extra flexibility and add a whole new dimention to the game. Has anybody figured a way of handling that, or is it best to just run it automatically until we get some access fixes? I don't mean to harp on negatives, I'm really enjoying the game and it's not like anything I've been able to play before.@Zkline, thank you for bringing this to the forum. V highly depends on your scanner-technology and your explored map. The fleet-filter for v is f and you should use it together with the o-filter for displaying only your oponent fleets. So the syntax is:v foIf you want to check general distance to your controled space you could set a value after fo to see only a specific distance.v fo 3Will show you all whats happening 3 parsecs arround.If you want to see everything happening in range of one of your planets the syntax is:v fo +3Of course you have to select the concerned colony first by g-command.Feel free to ask if i was to stupid with my explanations.

So, when useing the "V" command, without the quotes, at the moment when ever I type anything other then V pi, or just V with distance and stuff, how do I get it to tell me stuff like enemy fleets and stuff.Can't look at in the ? command because I can only get to around the design command, and it won't let me go any higher.

I was thinking about another point:After the first 200 years, when you have lets say 12 Colonies, it would be useful to check out the endangered of your colonies which are close to other empires. Cause they can be reached very quickly so you maybe will have to defend them in advance.

Walker,You never use the quotes with the V command, just to be 100% clear. THe only time you quote anything is if you have a planet name like "Alpha Centauri," which has a space in it.What the V command I gave you is doing is showing you (P)lanets that are (Y)ours. I put the letters in parentheses to make it read a bit better. You can also do things like ask for (u)nexplored planets, or (F)leets that belogn to your (o)pponnents.

YEah, autoresolve is smart enough most of the time, I've found. WHat's more key than combat tactics, often, is knowing what your enemy has tech-wise, and that's what spies can do. The "rep," command is super useful for figuring out how advanced people are without firing a shot.

Yeah and i would say, that combat is a more important thing than i thought. If you want to learn how to design good ships, you have to partizipate in combat to see how they behave. So yes, combat is a not to be underestimated part of the game.

HEy,Stellaris is, let's say a moving target. MOO at least is more or less static. I'll definitely keep everyone posted with any progress I make, however. As far as MOO goes, one of my longer-term goals is to improve the combat display, so it's not as visual. It's certainly possible to understand with a little practice, but could be better.

It's good to know my 1990s era stratts for this game still work. I put way too many hours into the original. This is gonna suck up my free time. Gah. I wanted to be useful. Sat down for a game. Five hours later I'm engrossed in it...trying to outcolonize and outfleet the 3 opponents. Forgot how fun MOO1 was. Hi All,HEre is a new release of the command line version of Master of Orion. THis is not as featureful as the previous versions, I didn't have as much energy to work on code as I thought I'd have this weekend.Still, the fix in this release is important, so I recommend getting it ASAP. It fixes a bug in the filter command, which made it hard to find unexplored star systems. THere are also a few smaller fixes to the new rules options introduced in the previous release.I will be updating the original post with the link, as always, and I Hope people find this enjoyable. Sort of. The way it works is your tax is taken from planets proportionately, so that the total matches the percentage you are taxing. Sadly you lose 1 bc for every 2 you collect, so it's inefficient.In order for colonies to use the reserve, you transfer money to them with the "res," command. Each colony can only use up to twice it's full productionin a year, but if you send more to it the remainder will be banked and used in later years. Also, in addition to taxation, if you spene more on industry after you've maxed factories on a planet, the excess goes to the reserve.

Taxes take money from your prduction and put it into the interplanetary reserve. This is kind of a floating bank account you can use to give planets, especially newly-colonized ones, a boost to production. It's also used to do things like pay tribute sometimes and deal with random events.

Interesting side note, the AI is designed to only focus on one area of tech research at a time exclusively. This was probably easier to code than some kind of priority system for different areas, which would have to keep changing.I leave the audio vs text question to others, and will just say that I'm planning another release this weekend which will fix a very annoying bug with filtering planets.

I think i have to throw my momentaryon the trash.The later acting of the races about conquering is realy realy realy nasty!The darlocks sended out a big ship to destroy one of my colonys and the bullrathy came afterwards in the next year to colonice it. I bombed it to pieces and this mades the bullrathy very unhappy so they declared war on me.Hello? Firefly,It looks like both security, and spying, and taxes incidentally, can be treated as basically percentage sliders, the same as you would your planet production. That is, the maximum for all three is 100, although it’s 100% that means a different thing depending on which one you were talking about. That being said, it could be expensive to spend 100% on any one of them, let alone all three :-) I think with the wording in the help is trying to say is that the percentages are drawing up to a certain amount, but it could be better phrased, although I admit I’m not quite sure how at this hour of the night. :-) Hope that helps anyway.

This works with the added planetary governor feature, and all it does is set the number of bases you want to build on a planet before the governor moves on to research or whatever. It has nothing to do with targets in the sense of combat.

Walker and Firefly,Keep in mind that the Darloks are very, very good at finding spies sent against them. I would not expect to get very far with this tactic. That being said, the command you want is "spy Darlok sabotage." I think you can use abbreviations, but am not 100% sure. THe problem with keeping spies alive is that they have a chance every year to be detected, and that's more true of the Darloks than against any other race. As for missile bases, they are defensive only, they will help against fleets or transports sent against your planet, but are not capable of launching offensive strikes to other star systems.

Do you need to type the full word, or just "sabot?I am trying to spy on the Darloks, but it keeps telling me that I have no spize in the empire, but a year, and in this case, sabotage.

Firefly,I want to try and overhaul the combat display in general at some point, but for now I suggest maybe using the fleet command and seeing if you notice your scout on there. They always head back to your closest colony.Speaking of fleets, maybe you could use the "fo," filter? In my limited testing it shows only fleets visible to you by default, unless you use the "entire galaxy view," cheat, which I don't  really recommend.
