Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

Seb, if that ever happens again, know you can get the landlord under the Ontario human rights tribunal lickady split. My policy is to never mention pets of any kind when I'm renting a place, because even if its a cat, that can be fought as well. I rented my current home and didn't even tell the landlord about my cat and... I don't think he's found out to this day, over a year later... lol! I'm getting a guide dog later this year and again, he doesn't have to know. I'm renting a self contained apt in a house and as far as I'm concerned, I can do whatever I want in "my" property, as long as it doesn't pose a health risk to others or damage the residence. Check this article out. If you're the george brown student, you need never worry about your dog in rented housing again. http://www.thestar.com/life/homes/2012/ … teeth.html

Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

Well Seb, on the one hand an unfriendly land lady could indeed be a difficult thing to cope with. On the other,  you might be able to work things out and actually have a better time in the end. After all she has backed down on the issue which is either because she's willing to change, or because she had to. It also depends upon how much you want the house, eg, if there's a really nice person to rent from who has no problem with dogs and has just as decent a place in an  equally good position that would be fine (location is majorly important especially if you have disfunctional optics and no car), however if the choice is rent from this lady or live twelve hundred and sixty one miles out of town in the middle of a desert infested by flesh eating, poisonous zombie mole dragons, - hmmm, might have got carried away there but you see my point .

Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

I would have to agree with Leibylucwgamer, I still think you should take it. Not only did you go through all of the trouble to get it, but I think it sends the wrong message to people if you end up not taking the house in the end. After all, the people still get what they want, which obviously is no dog in the house. This will make them less likely to actually accept someone with a dog in the future, because even if you relent in the end, they will not come and live there anyway. Of course they might have a bit of a damaged reputation from the media, but perhaps that's a price they're willing to pay. It's better to prove that the dog will indeed not cause any disruptions. I understand where you're coming from, and if you really don't feel up to it you could of course choose to live somewhere else, but I would recommend that you think about it a little more before rejecting the idea.

@Siria, I'm shocked the law in Italy is that unreasonable, it is part of the Eu after all. In Britain there is currently a guide dog campaign to make  people more aware of the law regarding guide dogs, but if a person is willing to stand their ground there isn't a lot offending parties can do and they can be chargedd.

Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

@first poster: I've a similar story. I live in Milan. Two months ago, i told my house owner that I was finally going to receive my guide dog. When I signed the contract, I had told her about it, and she seemed happy for me, so I didn't expect any problem. Unfortunately, the exact day I went to retrieve my dog, she phoned me telling that I couldn't enter with Teo in my house. We argued for a while. Finally, she agreed to let me in, but I had to start looking for a new home and to go away as soon as possible. Milan is full of houses to rent. Seriously, you just have to walk around to find a place that's good for you. Well. I've spent the last two months searching, because noone wanted my dog. It was too big, I was blind so I was unable to look after him, they where allergic etc. Fortunately, last week I've found a owner who accepted us. It was a frustrating experience, I'm so relieved it's finally over.

Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

Don't worry about having to rent the house now if you don't want to. But do it if you feel comfortable.Sometimes, even the threat of the law can worry people; other times, it is when the media gets involved; but I have seen a time where, although the offending party was in court, they still refused to change until they were literally "forced" into doing it.

Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

@Seb2314, first, good you got the house in the end and things worked out legally. It sounds like Canida is the same as the Uk for this, ie, people could be prosecuted for preventing you doing something normal like rent a house with a dog, so hurrah. On not wanting the house though I have my own story to tell.  Back when I had just finished my gcse's and was looking for a place to go to take my a levels, (staying where I was just wasn't! happening), I went to the school my brother went to. the head of year did everything he could to prevent me going short of actually refusing. I was told I couldn't take English because they had 19 people in a class and there wouldn't be a spare chair, I was told I couldn't take three subjects and that I couldn't go to university,  the head of year was adamant getting around the school would be difficult etc. My brother fortunately, who'd been there for 7 years and who was partial
ly sighted (read large print), basically wasn't having it, so I finished up going under threat of force. One year later, when I'd had no problems at all and for various other reasons was looking at staying for an extra year doing a subject, the head of yearactually invited me to discuss things, clearly with the vision of me going to university (something he'd previously denied). He streight out said "I envisaged a lot of problems that didn't come up" and appologised, and we were on the best of terms ever sinse. Now, as the head of year he never taught me, most of his job was admin. However, the fact that he did! go from very much not wanting to come, using every excuse he could to appologising does show something. Things can! work sometimes if people are willing to change their minds, indeed guide dogs are very good at doing their own pr (I have friends who say "I don't usually like dogs but I like Reever"). So
I'd personally recommend Explaining to the lady that guide dogs won't make a mess in the house, are very well trained, that you will see the carpets etc are clean of hair, and try and make a new start. it's entirely possible she'll also be a scuzzbag, but hay then you can move somewhere else and nobody can accuse you of not trying, however on the other hand if it works, it could be good for you, and for her and indeed for the town if the media got involved. @Sean, I don't really see what being white or not white (which is a silly category anyway), has to do with media attention, or at least in a place where the media is supposed to be none biased as is the case in Britain. Over here it's much more the case that disability isn't talked about than it always has to be a sob story, but that's true in any medium from news to the internet, disabled people are either helpless or heroic for facing their own helplessness and there is no in
between, and blind people aren't usually talked about at all. Still, when the thing works it works, and it's not good to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

As much as I'd like to agree with you're not wanting the house, I must say it's counter-productive.  You went through the trouble of fighting to get it, and, again, while I want to agree with what your viewpoint is because I know I've felt that way, don't give up on it.I do understand, however, the tension between you and the owner.  If you're willing to put up with that for x amount of time, then do it.  But if you feel like it's not worth your time, then quite obviously you're capable of moving.  It is ridiculous to go through something like that.  Blind people are usually treated with least amount of understanding from the 30% of idiots you'll encounter in life.  I say 30% as a relative term from my own experiences.  In the states, I've noticed people are generally good-hearted and willing to help out.  I've never had an asshole who said, "Sorry, I can't help you.
 t;Best Regards,Luke

Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

This is bad man.The house may not have been suitable for a dog.You should have taken it though. The media are not always on your side. The government controled ones are fine, the rest work for ratings. After seeing how they treat those on the news they don't care much for especially if you are of a different race or religion or protest, well just saying.Put it this way, if you are not white then you may or may not have a problem. In fact if you are white you may still have a problem. If you are ok that probably means they want something from you.Being disabled is fine but your in the poor and helpless catogry, they like poor and helpless blindy sob stories. But while this one was in your favour it could be in your enemie's some day. Here we have a show called fair go, I am not sure if you have that where you are.I have seen people that have done well bad things to people, and they are ready to fight for you
physically if need be.And publish it, shame your enemies! However I have watched a lot of us shows, shows like dr phill, stuff that well who knows maybe our media is publishing all the shows that play in to their hands stuff that makes you wander.Well no one has responded to this post, I guess its not that important to some of them.
