The last thing I can suggest you is to use a spyware and malware checker to see if something hidden crap is running in the background and messing with your internet connection. I'm not sure on what is the most accessible malware remover.

Yeah, the funny thing is, that I get those speed-hack alerts more often while cycling through and setting the game-options in the main menu, than inside the game itself! However, unlike some of You, I never get them while idle, (tried it out even for a whole hour time), but only while performing some type of action...for example very often while writing a chat message.

Re: Survive the wild, speed-hack alerts

I don't see how round trip times are an issue. If you send a request to the client asking the timer value with an interval of 60 seconds, and the timer reports that 70 seconds have passed since the last check, you know that's a speedhack. If 50 seconds have elapsed, you are either dealing with a very, very bad connection or it's a speedhack.

Re: Survive the wild, speed-hack alerts

Round trip times will probably make this not an ideal solution. Don't use timers to verify if you're speed hacking. The timers can also be modified by software, so they're not very reliable either way. The only data that can reliably be tested is, for example, the position info sent from the client to the server. But even that could have errors, especially across laggy connections. That's why I say have a moderator verify.

Yeah, that's what I said. Make the server send a packet requesting the client's timer, send it back, and let it be verified on the server.

Re: Survive the wild, speed-hack alerts

Timers are a very inaccurate way to measure speedhacking. As I said, the only way to do this is on the server. If the server sees values that are way out of whack, that might be an indication of there being something wrong. The server should do all the sanity checks, not the client. The server should always get priority in multiplayer games. And don't kick right away. And oh my god do not format your hard drive! That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. Formatting your drive just to play a game? I thought it was a joke at first. LOL

Re: Survive the wild, speed-hack alerts

Defragmenting is not going to help you on newer versions of windows, it happens automatically. If your D: drive is an hdd and you only run a few programs from it, this could be the issue, because the drive might idle in the game and it would need to start back up when it needs to load a sound etc. Because this will take so long, it will get you a speedhack alert. So if you have an ssd at C: or another hdd at C:, this is worth trying. Else don't bother. Closing background apps might also help if they are demanding for the processor.

Re: Survive the wild, speed-hack alerts

I know I should probably be defending STW and some people might not like me for it, but ... The speedhack detection is messed up. 99 % of the time when you get it, you are not doing anything wrong at all. You can even trigger the speedhack detection in the main menu and honestly, who would want to speedhack in the main menu?I don't get it that often myself so can't help you much, but maybe you could try Defraggler or some other defregmantation program. You could also try deleting the STW folder in AppData, Roaming (Don't worry, it will only delete your settings for STW). While having a fast computer is nice for sure, nobody needs to buy a new pc or reinstall windows so they can play one single game. Unless you have a very, very old computer.

Re: Survive the wild, speed-hack alerts

So maybe I am missing something here? but why is coding a speedhack detection system so incredibly hard? just start a timer when the server connection has been made, make the server periodically send packets asking the client the timer values, and make the client send them. If the timer on the client is greater than the time it should be, you've got a speedhack. If the value is smaller by 5 seconds or so, also a large chanse you've got a speedhack, might be a terrible connection but if that is the case the game is probably not worth playing anyway. And no, if 1 multiplayer game tells you you've got speedhacks, that is not the fault of your computer. It's a programming error.

Coding speedhack detection is pretty difficult and shouldn't be done client side. I'm not sure how STW does this, but I did see some speedhack detection code that Sam put up a while ago.Maybe speedhacking should merely notify the administrators or moderators so they can sanity check server side what is going on. Simply booting someone out of the game seems like an unfair solution to people who, like Caccio or Socheat, are just trying to play the game normally. Especially since people who are desperate will be able to get around the speedhack detection either way.Just some thoughts

I am generally not fond of crafting-based games, but Surviving The Wild has a large world to explore, a significant amount of active players online, a very creative gameplay, with lots of alternatives to choose from, including even PvP, and it's free to play anyway...so I keep trying to play it in the last few days...Yes, I said I "keep trying"...but the title of this forum topic of mine explains all:Namely, I quite often get "thrown out" from the game to the desktop, after a loud-shouting "speed-hack!" alert!I was adviced by some regular players there to "format my hard-drive"...which I consider for absolutely ridiculous idea...asking from a blind man to format his drive, and then reinstall the whole operative-system, with all the required and useful utility programs, games, all the user-settings, etc etc all over again, right from the scratches, merely due some hyper-sensitive security-settings of one certain game..
.that was a full-day work for me even while I was sighted...so normally I wish to avoid this "alternative" by all possible means!I sincerely hope, that some of You people here can come out with an another advice, or suggestion for the solution of this problem...As for myself, all I tried so far was turning off both my firewall and antivirus program, but it had no effect at all, the "speed-hack" exits to desktop kept happening with the same average intensity.
