Re: Sunu Band vs WeWalk smart cane

Ok. The Sunu band is a plastic watch with a cylinder on one end, and two buttons on one side. The WeWalk is a flimzy cane with a rolling tip that has a big bulky handle. The handle is primarily plastic with a sort of rubberized grip, you have a button on the back, and on the top you have a glass trackpad that controls different functions of the cane. The cane does fold, but it's tricky to get the strap to go around the cane. The strap is not like other white canes, and it's a big huge elastic thing. So you have to wrap it around the cane a few times and do something else.I figured it out, but I really don't know how to explain it

Re: Sunu Band vs WeWalk smart cane

People who are pissed about the water resistance, obviously this may vary from product to product but generally most things that aren't water resistant can withstand at least a little bit of rain. I haven't seen the WeWalk yet but if it doesn't have any huge or obvious openings it would probably be fine, the only time you wouldn't want to be using it would be, like, a thunderstorm or whatever where the rain is very heavy. Granted this is more of a problem in some parts of the US like florida in the summer, but you'd probably be fine here in the UK, and if it really did get bad you probably wouldn't want to be out there anyway, smart cane or no smart cane, you'd already have enough trouble navigating just because of the conditions. My self, I'm looking into getting one of these myself. I'd never herd of the other thing OP mentioned, so was wondering if anyone who's owned / seen both could give me a physical description of both devices. One thing I'm curious about is weather or not the WeWalk can fold, I'd hope so because if not that really is a huuge issue. judging from the OP's description the sunu or however it's called seems to be more of a watch / band of some description so the above question wouldn't apply. Please do correct me if I'm wrong though.

Re: Sunu Band vs WeWalk smart cane

No water propper water resistance is a bit of a turnoff for me for these products. I'd rather use my normal white cane and occasionally run into things I couldn't find rather than something that is ruined if some rain touches it. Though in terms of such tech in general, I'm hyped for advances in this field in the 20s. Since the tech you need to run such devices is getting even cheeper and even low-end sensors are becoming more powerful, I'm pretty confident we will see a propper smart cane that can do more than just being a shield for objects on the ground. It's just very unfortunate that the blind institutions over here can't seem to catch onto trends like these in a timely fassion, I've never heard of these things and people working with them till now, and never from any austrian institutions.

The sunu is abit water resistant, like it can be touched by water, at least that is what they say.In my experience, it is water resistant, I was careful not to put it in water, but I always got some on it.To be honest, it feels cheap, it feels like a toy for the most part, but yeah, asistive products feel like that in my experience.

well this is interesting. I normally use the phone to have a sort of vague idea where some new place is, because for instance, lazarillo, the guide app is not really accurate.. so at one moment you might be arriving, and then a few seconds later you are still 200 meters away from the place, so this is a bit annoying since I really have not a clue if i just crossed the right street at the right time and or made the correct turn. As always people are thankfully helpful in this country so I have been using the phone less and less to orient myself.

Hello all!How about water resistance? I mean, both devices are used outside, usually not within your home. So if the whether gets rainy, what happens? which of the two devices is more water resistant?I was thinking about buying a Wewalk. A team of developers from Serbia made a prototype of a smart glove, which could tell you if there is an object near you, read colors and banknotes, vibrate according to the light intensity and a few more things. So once it goes out of the prototype stage, it mightreplace both devices.Best!

Sunu Band vs WeWalk smart cane

2020-02-09 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : rwbeardjr via Audiogames-reflector

Sunu Band vs WeWalk smart cane

Hello. This topic is going to discuss two mobility aids. The WeWalk smart cane, and the Sunu band. This will be done in sections, and I will talk about how each thing holds up, and at the end, I will tell you which device I prefer, and it is my hope that you will be able to get the right device after you have read this topic. So what am I waiting for? Let's get started!PortabilityFor anyone who has seen the WeWalk, you would know that it is a big bulky thing that everyone is going to notice. On the other hand, the Sunu band is a watch.Build qualityWhen it comes to the build quality, I give my point to Sunu. If you have seen the WeWalk, you may have noticed that the cane is very flimzy.AccuracyAgain, my point goes to the Sunu band. For those who don't know, the Sunu is worn on the wrist of the hand you do not use your cane in, and it is designed so that you can keep your hand at your side naturally. Also, unlike the WeWalk which has one solid vibration pattern to let you know something, the Sunu band slowly vibrates as you approach an object, and it is much easier to scan different areas. With the Sunu, you just turn your wrist in a certain direction and it will scan the area. With WeWalk, the sonar is on the top, and it can only scan straight ahead.SoftwareBoth devices have good software, but both have their share of problems. With the WeWalk, I feel like I get more information about my surroundings in terms of businesses. My Sunu always says there is nothing around me.HardwareThis may seem like something that goes under build quality, but not really.I like the Sunu because of its portability, but one thing I will give the WeWalk is the speaker that it has on the back.If you want audio from your Sunu, you have to use the iOS or Android app. Granted you have to on WeWalk, but you don't necessarily need your phone's sound on in order for it to work.Final thoughtsHonestly, I prefer the Sunu to the WeWalk because of the features I mentioned above. Both of them are good products in their own way, but disen it comes to obstacle detection, I give it to the Sunu because you have a better understanding of your environment.Any questions or other thoughts? Let me know

Sure, I understand it's not meant to replace a cane. But if I end up having to pay more attention to all the vibration/haptic feedback than I normally do when I'm finding stuff, why should I bother, especially if the thing's significantly heavier than the canes I'm used to? Also if it's paired with my phone and that's how I control the information it's giving me, won't I still need to have my phone out anyhow?

hello Audacitythey never say that the use of the ain will be iliminated, this is just the improved version of  a cain with advance features such as obstical detection, navigation app, and potential to improvecurrontly, lets say your moving somewhere and using navigation, you have to listen the enviroment, use your cain, and hold the phone with the other hand for instructions this product simply makes your other hand free, meaning you heard the insturctions from the cain insteaf of the phonecurrontly it's integrated  with alexaand googlemap, but i heard that that functionalety will be combined with blindsquare and other apps in the near feuture

Even the people who make the product tell us that you need confidence with the cane. This product does not aim to eliminate the cane, it only intends to improve it. They don't say that exactly, but that's the gist of the whole thing

Re: Has anyone used WeWalk?

I haven't tried the cane and I'm sort of torn. New tech that increases independence is great. I'd love to be able to walk where I want to go with both hands free and not run the risk of tripping oblivious strangers. This feels a lot like a solution looking for a problem that isn't there, however. Like if you're already competent with a cane or dog what's this really giving you that you can't get more efficiently with other apps, and if you aren't competent with a cane or dog how will this help you anyhow?

honestly i dont have one of those myself, though getting one as a gift on ths satturday but, as far as i tested it, you should be confedent enough with a normal cain before using it. The cain wont help you if your independence is low with a cain, that really ont change anything.yeah the cain has so many downsides, such as beeing not waterproof, not enough apps integrated yet, but remember its still a new thing around.i can abel to do a test recording when i get it if i find a good mic  enough.

Re: Has anyone used WeWalk?

I received one as a gift and I'm not impressed. It's easy to set up with the WeWalk app, but it honestly doesn't help that much. Don't get me wrong, I'm really trying not to bash the product. It's a great idea. However, I really don't find it very useful. The GPS is nice, but it's not what I personally want. I want something with a camera and object recognition, not something that just tells me to turn left in 100 meters onto another street. Where's the street? Exactly how far away is 100 meters? My spacial awareness is horrible, and this cane doesn't really help.I also find it very uncomfortable to hold due to the weight of the unit at the top. The vibration feedback is a nice idea, but I couldn't get the thing to stop vibrating even when I was in open space. I'll have to try it again and send this feedback to the developers. As I said, it's a nice idea, but not at all practical in my honest opinion.

Re: WeWalk?

My dad made a sonar cane with like $30 of stuff from, like, Biglots or something, like 10-15 years ago, I forget precisely when. Making one that's good enough to be worth using is another matter.Mostly, two issues I have are: messing with the weight and balance of the cane, and how you get the information and whether or not that clashes with usual information channels. Headphones, hoods, etc obstruct my senses enough as is, but those are usually optional and can be worked with. Headphones with constant noise? Well, I haven't tried using the vOICe on the street, and I'd expect that to be comparable to most smartcanes in terms of information, if not better. Haptics? How's that work? Does it mess with how you use the cane at all?Give me glasses with vibrators in them, have them vibrate based on how far away the obstacle is. So instead of glasses, it's more like a Sonar ... crown? Halo? Tiara? Headband? Bandana? Helmet? Hat? ... Make it like the Burger King Crown, and call it the Echo King, or something like that. Sure, it'd look completely ridiculous, but the awesome kind of ridiculous. More importantly, it doesn't mess with normal cane use, and only obstructs normal acoustics about as much as normal headgear. Though, minimizing the acoustic obstruction would be real nice, too.

From what I have understood, this is something you attach to the handle of your cane, may be someone sighted fixes me if i'm wrong. This location is a great place, as it almost never gets hurt. I'm walking about 1,5 km to my school and another 1,5 km back to my home every day (excluding weekends of course). There were situations where i was very close to fall, there was one situation where I have really fallen down ironically on a place where I knew that this could happen, and there were situations when I have almost broken my cane under standing cars. But the cane's handle never get hurt, whatever stupidity I had managed to do.So from my experience only things this device would face are vibrations from cane hits and water, from wet hands, rain, or sweat. Also when an external keyboard for mobile phones for blind was introduced, I don't remember the name, for about 500 dollars, the reason of that price was, or at least one of local voluntary sellers have stated it, that blind people can request it from their state and it will pay it for them regardless of price, so having a higher price than minimal necessary can help in further development without users noticing the difference as they don't pay for it themselves.I don't know what is the situation in other parts of the world, but in Slovakia, this makes a sense. If you need something to compensate your disability, the state will pay it for you. Thus many of blind people here get things like Jaws licences, expensive laptops, mobile phones, braille displays, or even white canes completely free or just for minimal price. And a smart cane shouldn't be problem as well, if you can explain, what it is good for, although they perhaps won't give you two for a year like they do with normal canes I guess. But here is great the concept of attaching the device, so if you break your cane, you can just exchange them and continue using the smart cane, what would not be the case, if it was one product.i don't state now that overpricing is good or bad. I'm just saying, that from economical point of view, it makes a sense.Another thing is marketing, if they have something that really works, but that I have mentioned already in previous posts.Best regardsRastislav

Re: WeWalk?

This is one of those things that sounds good but isn't practical due to its relatively high price tag and the small market. Add to that the small companies that seem to be making these types of products have little funding, so if a product is damaged in shipping, getting a replacement is either difficult or impossible. People's hearts are in the right place but they are obviously not aware of the fact that most blind people are on fixed incomes and use canes to avoid hitting things. This means that the cane hits things, sometimes quite hard. These delicate components aren't built to stand up to that abuse, thus more replacements necessary and more loss of money to the companies.

Re: WeWalk?

@5: in my case the cap solution doesn't work. Even if the obstacle is in way of the peak, what is not necessarily the case, it can go under or above it, only effect it has is that the cap falls down and I bang my head into the obstacle. It works only on tiny branches, where it is not required, as my head do the job with the same quality. But for strong branches, for example when tree grows to the street directly from the ground i.e. you are likely to face one of its root branches, there is no chance.I don't know if it is because of my speed or my head's shape, but anyway, I would trust the sonar a bit more. However as i said before, I would need to see it in practice, if it really works like I imagine it.As for Google maps, here I think it is rather a confort improvement than a new invention. Arm with the cane is always usable just from small part for things other than manipulating with the cane, what is quite a deal when you consider that it's normally your preferred hand, which performs those operations. Thus giving another functionality under it can make the whole system more efficient and confortable, again in theory.Or in short, I am always more likely to use something I already hold in my hand rather than messing with whole other device.Sighted people don't need anything to walk, blind people need at least the white cane and mobile phone eventually, if they don't know the surface. If the white cane and mobile phone can be joined into one thing, we will need to care about just one thing, which is already in use, instead of two, where the secondone is grabbed just from time to time. Of course only if it works like it's described. That's at least my personal opinion, I would definitely like to see it in action though. The price even high is not important for me, if the device really helps at least bit.Best regardsRastislav

Meh. I don't really think I'd ever need one, and it just seems like a reinvention of the wheel especially because it contains google maps (I think?) which I can get on my phone for free. As far as avoiding tree limbs and other things in my path at head level, it's as simple as wearing a baseball cap so the bill hits them first instead of my face. Maybe I'm wrong, but there really doesn't seem to be much use for this product, what with nearby explorer being free now and the TARC app being accessible enough for me to catch a bus with. Am I missing something here? What would justify a 500 dollar price point when apps I download are free?

Re: WeWalk?

Hi there,May be my memory is kidding me, but I remember when I watched this about a year ago, I considered the price of 200 dollars quite overrated. Now when I see the current price of 500 dollars... hmm... wtf?Yeah, it's great that I don't need to wear my smartphone, so it can be prevented from being stolen, but currently WeWalk seems to be actually more expensive than my Nexus 5 in its best days.I would also be interested if the device is waterproof, what happens, when I go to toilet and use it with wet hands after washing?Beside of these questions, the concept seems very interesting. I have been thinking about an ideal solution for my head protection, as the only way i am able to detect head-level obstacles now is using my really poor echolocation, which is far better in missing obstacles than in detecting them. Having a sonar on a white cane sounds quite interesting and more elegant than wearing sonar glasses, but if it will work in practice, I have no idea. What I would definitely make use of is the compass built in the cane, to help in passing crossings. I have tried this already on my mobile phone and it worked quite well. Having it in a white cane could definitely answer on which side of the way have I landed, or better said completely prevent walking out of the crossing. So, in conclusion, this idea seems very interesting and promising in making walks more confortable for us.However until either I have an opportunity to try it myself or I get a pack of money to spend on anything, i will be hardly in a position to get one.I hope our blind organizations will soon get it and show in workshops. If it's worth it, it is the best way for authors to get attention from our community, because at least in Slovakia and Czech people are definitely not willing to pay that price for something they have never seen or never heard of anyone using it.Best regardsRastislav

Re: WeWalk?

I like the sound of it, and I'm considering getting one. I'd have to hear a few more demos of it though.
