Having kippers and mixed veg with tons of butter for lunch today. Think kippers are my favourite fish, once I learned to live with the bones.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

@Turtlepower what is scrapple? I thought that was a game where you put letters on a board to spell words, though I suppose the texture of that would be pretty crunchy .Actually my lady has a similar thing with cream or gloppy texture, so I do appreciate the issue, she's also not into cream soups either, though does like soup of other kinds. For me, its the texture of tomatoes in solid state and the majority of fruit. It just makes my stomach absolutely heave! Its odd, I'm fine with tomato sauce or with tomatoes in a pizza etc, likewise I absolutely love the taste of fruit juice or fruit smoothies, but its just the solid texture of the things I cannot stand.Vedge on the other hand I do like, provided its cooked. Interestingly enough Thatguy, a rumanian chap I know once said nobody outside of eastern europe knows how to cook cabbage, and while I don't have a strong dislike  cabbage I will say I once went to a pollish resteraunt where they had the best cabbage I've ever had.Last night my lady and I had fish cakes, hash browns and mushy peas, which are a very English thing, and probably sound revolting to anyone not from Britain, but are actually quite nice. We do plan to go out for something propper this week, though goodness knows when.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

Yes. The texture of scrapple makes me want to vomit, even though that's a favorite of a lot of people in my area, for one. I'm also not a fan of creamy soups, like cream of chicken or what not, because of my aversion to the texture. I'm OK with the vast majority of vegetables, except for peas, which I've explained earlier in this topic, and red beets, which taste like dirt to me no matter how they're prepared.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

Yeah, personally never been to much of a fan of vegetables, especially cabbage. It just doesn't taste that good. I don't know if it's a texture thing, but I just really don't like eating it. Speaking of which, does anyone else have weird textures that they just can't deal with? Broccoli does it for me as well.Today I didn't have anything special, just some pre-processed frozen chicken strips I threw in the air fryer. I can't cook nothing at the moment, because we just got ourselves one of them new modern ovens that got a touchscreen, and it's pretty inaccessible. Luckily, those things usually have some kind of app you can use to control them, so I should probably look that up at some point.

@Thatguy, those cookies do sound good. "fudge" over here generally means a sugar based caramel as I said, I was just a bit surprised when my lady mentioned her parents makking double fudge brownies that didn't actually involve fudge, just extra chocolate, though I'm always up for extra chocolate ;D. Yesterday  we were at my parents and my mum made actual propper minced beef pies, which we had with cabbage, carrots and sweed mash, which were wonderful. We'll probably be treating ourselves to a meal out this weekend, though whether we go back to pastability, the really good Italian, or try somewhere else I don't know. Oh and yes Chicken kievs are a favourite of mine.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

Well, I'm allergic to seafood. But I love it. Used to be that my allergy was pretty mild, and I'd be able to get down some popcorn shrimp with no ill effects. But it has involved into something much worse now,  I can no longer ingest delicious food from the ocean. I sure do miss it though.Fudge over here, at least from my experience, is a nice, chewy snack. It is somewhere between a soft cake and a chocolate chip cookie, not not fluffy but not crunchy either. It is certainly something you can sink your teeth into. A lot of people view it as some kind of candy, but I think that's kind of dumb. I mean, it isn't exactly something you'd get for dessert at a restaurant, but it isn't a  mass-produced, chemical laden chocolate bar either. Either way, it's dang good. But in some cases, fudge will be liquid, like the previously mentioned hot fudge sundey. It's sort of like a thicker custard. Other times it can be a topping for a cake. I've had fudge icing before. That chicken sounds pretty good, Dark. I love anything garlic, and putting that on the breasts and wrapping them up in bread sounds amazing. I tell you, I really gotta get over to England and start trying everything you've mentioned in this topic. Especially those dark chocolate muffins. Those sound awesome.Speaking of desserts, last Sunday for dessert after lunch we had these things called forgotten cookies. They're called that because, believe it or not, you make the doe, put them on a sheet, heat the oven to 3 50, put them in there, and get this: you turn off the oven! You close the door and just leave them in there for around 8 hours, and when you take them out, there they are. The most amazing cookies ever. They got chocolate chips, pecans, and sometimes m and m's inside a thin shell of egg whites and vinegar. It might not sound good, but it totally is.

@Nocturnus funny you mention seafood being expensive. Britain is of course an island, and I've heard there is no part of Britain that is more than 80 miles from the sea, so there is a lot of fish over here, something my lady approves of since she really enjoys fish. One  thing I found odd in pensylvania is over there samon was considered a luxury fish, whilst we had crab cakes quite frequently, whilst in England crab is rather expensive, but salmon is really common. As to calamari, it very much depends firstly on where you get them and secondly on how they're cooked. I didn't care for them the first time I had them, since they were cooked too long and went rubbery, but then I went to Griece and got some fresh caught ones in olive oil that were just plane heavenly. Now I have them fairly often, they're one of my favourite starters at our lovely local Italian restaurant.@Mirage, one question I do have is about fudge since that was a rather odd cultural misunderstanding with my lady. Over here fudge is like an extremely sweet caramel stuff which either comes as a liquid, or as a solid chewable stuff, where as my lady said in america "fudge" basically meant extra chocolate, or peanut butter or something, which seems sort of odd to me. Ice cream I don't go nuts on, but I like it occasionally if its properly maid, said Italian also does lovely gelato, as well as woffles topped with gelato, chocolate sauce and other goodies, albeit I can't have those all the time since they tend to be bloody humungus! . As to bacon, one other cultural difference I noticed in the states, is that over  it seems much more common to do bacon so crispy that we'd consider it burned. For me, I prefer my bacon lightly grilled so that it actually tastes like meat, indeed occasionally I will go and make a good old bacon butty (that is a bacon sandwich), on  george forman, usually with some bbq sauce or sometimes ketchup.Actually I'm rather wanting one now . @Thatguy, yes I've had those salami wraps before, though personally since I always fancy things hot I'd rather put the cream chese and salame on a toasty I think. A favourite sandwich topping (hot or cold), for me is cream cheese and good smoked gammon.Yesterday evening I did chicken Kievs, roast potatoes and beans, we were going to have steamed vedge but the vedge had gone off due to us being longer at my parents than I planned. For those who don't know, chicken kievs are chicken breasts, wrapped in bread crumb with garlic sauce stuffed inside, and are something i'm quite fond of. As to a perfect day menu, the reason I haven't replied is that there are so many things I like its really hard to narrow things down, particularly since there are things which are nice everyday things, and then there are things you have specially perhaps just once or twice which are awesome and make for a memory, like the occasion I went to hester blumenthal's resteraunt and had octipus rizotto with octipus ink, or said unusual sausage meal I mentioned earlier in this topic. but I'll have a think and see if I can come up with at least a vague selection.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

I've been seeing all these posts that have bacon in them, and I've been wanting some more and more every time it's mentioned. Speaking of that, how do you all like your bacon? Some people like it nice and crispy while others find the floppy, saturated with fat strips preferable. If you're good at making bacon, then you'll know how to fry it just right, where it's the perfect blend between crispy and soft. That reminds me, a while ago, I used to buy salt pork, which is supposed to be used to add some extra flavor to some dishes, I think, and I'd just throw that in the skillet and eat it plain like that. It was dang good. Anyway, here would be my ideal meals for any given day.breakfast: Some fluffy pancakes lightly topped with butter. 2 eggs sunny-side up, and a couple of sausage patties, (or hash browns, whichever I'm in the mood for)lunch: A juicy burger with a side of garlic mashed potatoes.Snack: Now, I don't know if anybody's ever tried this before, and it may not sound  like it, but it is really, really good. Salami wraps: 1 piece of salami wrapped around a moderate amount of cream cheese. They're  amazing but rather unhealthy, which is why I never hardly eat them.Supper: Pork chops or a roast, the kind you toss in the crock pot and let cook all day, nicely salted and with a healthy dose of pepper. Side of green beans, corn, and maybe a baked potato.Dessert: Oreo cheesecake.Oh man. I can't express just how much I love cheesecake. It's amazing. Especially if it's from the cheesecake factory (which is actually a restaurant that serves really good, really large meals, along with the a-formentioned cake. The cake is so huge you gotta buy it by the slice!) And I would get it from there way more if it wasn't so dang expensive. But cheesecake is the best dessert around, in my opinion. But that's not to say it's my favorite. Derby pie is pretty amazing as well, as is dirt pudding (without the optional worms).

Re: Whatcha Eating?

From the few times I've had kalamari, I don't remember it having much of a flavor at all. I didn't really care for it. On the other hand, I could eat crayfish and shrimp all the time. I also had some flame grilled oysters once when I was in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. They were delicious. They were like eating very tender pieces of steak, and they had that strong seafood taste.Spiciness for its own sake doesn't impress me. I will happily scarf down something that makes my eyes water and my nose run, but not if it has no flavor to back up the heat. That's the main reason I never get the blazin wings from B-Dubbs. They just tasted like pain the one time I had them. To me, the mango habanero wings strike a nice balance between heat and flavor. As for Ass in the Tub, the name by itself would make that a no go for me. The spicy stuff on vat19 looks awesome, but it may be above my tolerance level. I may have to bite the bullet some time and find out.@45: That dinner sounds amazing except for the peas. I'm not a big fan of peas either.

I'm a big fan of seafood myself, although unfortunately I have to be careful how much shellfish I eat. I don't have a full-blown allergic reaction to it, but it can sometimes cause me to get ulcers in my mouth if I eat too much of it. At least it doesn't cause severe nausea anymore as it used to do when I was little, that really sucked.Calamari is something I've never actually tried, although I'm curious about it. What's the texture like? I'd think it would be a bit rubbery. Does it have a strong ocean taste, or is it more mild?As for Buffalo Wild Wings, I enjoy their garlic hot sauce the most, although the mango jabanero is also extremely good. I tried Blazin' sauce only once, and that was enough for me. I tend to agree that heat for its own sake is generally not all it's cracked up to be. Once, a long time ago when I was first getting into eating spicy foods, my dad bought this sauce called Ass In the Tub. I have no idea who the manufacturer was or if it still exists, but it was awful. Not only was it unbearably hot, it also tasted like straight plastic. But, for people who are interested in challenging their taste buds, might I recommend having a look around Vat19? I've never actually ordered any of their food products, but a lot of the things they sell look downright interesting. I think that if I actually decided to go through with getting anything from them, I'd spend a ridiculous amount of money, so I've never indulged. I know about them because I purchased a gift from there for my niece a couple of years ago, but their food products are, as I said, quite intriguing, and the category they have specifically for spicy stuff looks punishing. My dad made a mushroom gravy with red wine and shallots, and it was quite tasty, although we both agreed that the red wine flavor was just a tad too prominent. All in all though, it was enjoyable, even if I'm not the biggest fan of peas, but if you douse them in gravy or eat them with a bite of whatever else is on your plate, they're not too bad.

Dark, it's bhaji (b-h-a-j-I), not bargee. Mostly mentioning it in case anyone wants to go looking it up. Bhaji are actually pretty nice. Ditto samosas, if you do 'em right. My favourite type of curry so far is called Dansak; it's sort of hot but not too hot, and I get mine with lamb in. god is that ever nice.I agree that hot for the sake of hot is pretty pointless. This is why I like layering tastes.I've eaten Scotch egg twice. The first time I disliked it, as it felt rubbery and vile. The second time it actually wasn't half bad, and I'd be happy to try again. One of my previous partners was Briths (well, northern Irish) and I got introduced to some British fare that I quite like.Nocturnis, all your talk of fish and oysters and seafood in general makes me want some.I think for me, an ideal day as far as food would sound a little bit like this. Obviously wouldn't do this every day.Breakfast: A couple of waffles with either strawberries or raspberries and a bit of maple syrup (real maple syrup, not table syrup that just fails). A few strips of bacon or a couple of sausages. A glass of either milk, chocolate milk or some berry-related juice.Lunch: New England clam chowder or French onion soup. Grilled cheese sandwich with pepperjack cheese and bacon (particularly if I didn't have bacon in the morning) or grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce, cheddar, mushrooms and spicy mayo. Glass of iced tea, and maybe a banana muffin or an apple turnover.Dinner: Lemon pepper fish (I'm not picky, but cod is good) with a side of roasted baby potatoes, green beans and a little asparagus. Or a whole lot of garlic shrimp over rice (white or brown, I'm not picky) or in a stir-fry. Or...Damn it. Now I'm really hungry.

My fiancé really likes Jalfrezi. I should give it a try. I like Indian food all right, but when we've gotten delivery lately, I just want fries or typical American food. A lot of Indian meat dishes, I find the meat dry and cut into big chunks that are just hard for me to stay interested in.I made chicken shawarma in my Instant Pot the other day, and we had raw onion, green peppers, tomato, lettuce, cheese, and tzatziki to go with it. We ate it over riced cauliflower the first night, and I have to say, the cauliflower was the worst part. Trying to be healthy isn't worth it. It was much better for lunch the next day wrapped up in a tortilla. Don't let anyone lie to you that riced cauliflower is good. It is not!Cauliflower veggie tots made by Green Giant are pretty great. It's like tater tots, but with cauliflower on the inside. They crisp up in the oven, and you can eat them with Ranch.

@Nocturnus I hope your wife is alright and not eating makes sense, the menu you suggest sounds awesome. My lady actually has a similar issue with coffee, she doesn't dislike it, but it potentially dislikes her. this is a shame since she's become quite the fan of coco before bed, and one of my favourite types of coco is Mocha, which she likes the taste of, but which made her stomach become disagreeable. I probably couldn't plot a perfect menu, since really I like many things, but I will say we're looking to go out somewhere nice this week, since things have been bloody stressful recently for various reasons, so we'll probably be getting an awesome meal soon enough. last night since we were heading to the actor's workshop, we stopped at my parents and my dad made chicken Jalfrezi with rice and broccoli. We also had it with hot Naan bred, samosas and onion bargees.  To explain for those less familiar with Indian type of stuff, Jalfrezi, is a moderately spiced curry, though not too hot, Naan bread is like a round flat bread eaten hot and usually quite aromatic,  somosas are small crispy parcels of light pastry with vegitables and often potato in (sometimes they have meet but the ones we had last night were vedge ones), and bargees are like a light batter made with onions and herbs. It was actually really nice, and very welcome since we tend to skip lunch and go straight from   breakfast to dinner, and so we were both really hungry. #We also had some dark chocolate muffins, (sponge cakes not bread buns), for pudding, heated in the mike. What we're doing today I don't know. Breakfast will probably be a scotch egg. These are a very English thing (Stephen King talks about them quite disparagingly), and something my lady's got quite fond of. They're like a hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage meet and bread crumbs, and make a great breakfast since you can just zap them in the mike and instantly get your eggs and sausage . For  dinner today we'll see. I do like the idea of having something special and we've been recommended both a pub, a Mediterranean griek place and There is also the absolutely wonderful Italian pastability, or heck we still need to try the ultimate burger kitchin which is something we've been meaning to do.It'll probably be a struggle between tiredness and nonebotheredness to go out vs desire for good grubbage .

Re: Whatcha Eating?

I've a few posts I wish to respond to, but before I do I"d like to preface this post by saying that I'm gonna need you all today; I haven't eaten a thing since yesterday, partly out of tiredness, partly out of sadness... I need to motivate myself to have a little something... I know it, but my wife's been in the hospital for a couple of days now which has made things rather difficult.  Taking care of three kids and two cats on your own is a rather highly stressful practice; I know that by the time I got everyone fed, watered, bathed and to bed last night I was just far too tired to eat myself.  Coming back here and reading what everyone else is eating really does put a smile on my face, for whatever that's worth.  I mean, hey, it's not like I'm asking for money?  I just wana know what you're eating!  lolAnd now, I'm with Dark and post 39 to some extent.  Spicy sauces that are spicy just for the sake of being spicy are pointless; I could just as easily stick fire ants in my mouth and say it burns.  If I'm going to have something spicy, dish, sauce or what have you, I want to know that whatever it is is actually going to taste good!AS for coffee the ways post 39 describes, I confess I've never had such a thing but wish I could... I think my digestive system might actually handle it better overall.  Every time I drink coffee at present my stomach turns in on itself and begins talking to me, uttering groans I cannot for the life of me comprehend, but I do feel the pain entirely.@Jayde, post 26, what are these arteries you speak of?  Bacon is good for the soul; if I die of bacon overdose I'll at least die whole and mostly happy!  I also agree with your mac idea there; I actually like to shred chicken into mine then top the whole thing off with some wing sauce.@turtlepower17, post 25, warmed up chinese is no more than glorified rubber to me at least, but we eat it anyway because we don't want it to go to waste, applying memories of what it once was to soothe ourselves along the way.  It really does stink that some leftovers warm up waay better than others, but if you have any means of heating them up in the oven or on the stove you should try that before ever popping them in the microwave.  I'd be lying though if I said I wasn't lazy and used the microwave sometimes... Many times?  Too many times?@Thatguy, Outback and Cracker barrel FTW!  Chick-Filet isn't that bad either, but a tad too expensive for me to do more than once every few months.  Of course, that's better than Red Lobster, which I only have every few years.  AS for drinks, I"m a water guy myself for the most part, but it really depends on the meal, which I'm going to go into in detail further down...My ideal meal day would consist of the following:For breakfast I'd have some bacon, sausage, buttery scrambled eggs topped with cheddar or some other tasty cheese that isn't American corporate plastic wrapped single sliced processed slimy nonsense, along with some potatos... I usually go with hashed browns but wouldn't mind trying something else where potatos are concerned, a couple of slices of toasted bread or some good biscuits, and a tall glass of orange juice, freshly squeezed. For lunch, I'd have a well done butter roasted rib-eye steak with either broccoli, grilled onions or Grilled Artichokes, some mashed potatos loaded with bacon, cheese, butter, sour cream, lightly salted and peppered and with just a touch of garlic, a side of mixed Sauteed green beans and corn in lime butter, once again lightly salted and peppered, some cheesy macaroni, and a cup of iced water or freshly squeezed lemonade.Assuming I haven't died from that overload within five hours of lunch, I'd have a dinner or supper depending on who you ask, consisting of grilled blackened catfish with Cilantro-Lime Butter, some buttery grilled shrimp also seasoned with garlic and lemon and perhaps a touch of Oregano because why not, some oysters dipped in lemon and tabasco sauce with a touch of salt, and a couple of yeast rolls to top all of that off, along with another cup of iced water.I don't eat like that, BTW, and notice I didn't add in the desserts?  I'm not good with desserts... I like cake, jello, ice cream and the like, but I've never been much of a sweet tooth so I really shouldn't try to apply myself to that side of the discussion.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

@Flacus, since my lady loves fish, she's taken to the good old British Fish and chips very well .Monday evening we wound up having burgers which was nice. We've found a decent butcher who makes really good ones, plus I have some extra hot bbq sauce speaking of spicy things. Reheating the chilly worked last night which was good. I like spice, though I do have my tolerance level, and when things get to the point you can no longer taste the food and just get burn that's a bit much, albeit I apparently have a higher tolerance than some. Jerk sauce is great, though again, I've had some pretty hot versions, though I've not heard of general tso chicken. usually If I get chinese, my favourite is kung po., which is a spiced chicken dish apparently originating in Korea, though I also like blackbean sauce. The chinese where we used to live used to have an awesome dish called wandering dragon, which involved chicken, pork, prawns and peppers in black bean sauce and was amazingly nice, though they also did a great kung po. Sadly we've not found a decent chinese where we are now, though I've had one recommended to me which I do want to try. This morning we'll probably have hot dogs for breakfast (with the reds extra hot bbq sauce for me), which yeah, is weird but there you go, we like them. Since we've got to go over to my parents today for an acting workshop my mum will probably  a roast or something like that.In terms of coffee, that is a hole other subject and one we've been through before, in This topic for example Suffice it to say, while coffee and propper chocolate go together, I don't like my coffee sweet, if its made well it should be smooth enough to drink on its own, black with nothing in it, which is usually how I take it. Then again I freely admit I'm a bit of a coffee snob .

I will probably have left overs tomorrow, because for some reason the two warm up well, in a pan over the stove at least! On Thursday, I haven't dicided what I will have, but my aunt and I will be going out somewhere.

@31 that sounds like a dang good sandwich. Personally, I like a ham, turkey,  pepperjack cheese sandwich with a topping of olives, pickles, mayo, and banana peppers on Italian flatbread. It's quite the delight. Sometimes I'll throw some salami on there as well. Also @31, i love the mango habanera. It's hot and sweet, one heck of a great mixture. I Really enjoy the jerk sauce too, although having been to Jamaica once I can't say it's completely authentic. But it is really, really good. When I'm not in the mood for something too spicy sometimes I'll just get one of the more hot bbq sauces. I like them all, really.@33 coffee? I love it! However, I can't really agree with @18 that chocolate is what needs to be combined with it. I like mine strong and black. I actually tried a dark chocolate moka from Starbucks once... was not a fan at all. I just don't think coffee should taste sweet, but I hear some people really enjoy it. What I really like are them dark roasts. I bought myself a few K-Cups of some really good dark coffee, and I drink that every morning. Wakes me right up.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

I love spicy food. Speaking of which, I had a foot long chicken, bacon and ranch sub with provolone cheese, spinach, onions, pickles, and lots of jalapenos on Italian herb and cheese bread for dinner tonight. The night before, I had grilled barbecue ribs, potatoes and green beans. I usually stick with either water or tea to drink, but I will occasionally indulge in a soda.We have a Thai restaurant here in town where I like to eat from time to time. Thai food is awesome, especially the curries. My favorites are the green and panang curries. They occasionally serve this papaya salad called som tam that tastes amazing. However, I can't eat it and be around people because it apparently makes my breath smell terrible. Must be all the fish sauce they put in it. I've only been brave enough to get four stars out of five on the som tam, and even that's super spicy.I am also a fan of Buffalo Wild Wings. My favorite wings from there are mango habanero, Asian zing, Caribbean jerk, and garlic parmesan. I tried the blazin a few years ago and they were a bit too hot for me. I'm pretty sure they've reformulated them to be even hotter than they used to be.

I, as a general rule, enjoy hot stuff. I love hot sauce and as I mentioned before, buffalo wild wings is a great spicy chicken wing place to go when I'm needing some heat. I actually sometimes endeavour to increase my tolerance for that kind of food. Sometimes, I'll eat a big old handful of jalapenos and see how many I can get down. 34 is the most I've ever managed, for anyone who cares haha. Taking away the afteraffects is a little difficult though. Usually a couple bottles of propel will get rid of  the sting. If you think I'm crazy for doing that kind of thing, I know people who actually spray some of those terrible day-old burgers with pepper spray and eat them for lunch. They tell me it gives them a little flavor.

See, I don't think Chinese food warms up particularly well either, it tends to dry out or the meat gets too tough. Of course, if you're getting Chinese food, there's bound to be leftovers, so you tolerate it, but it's not as good as it should be the next day.@21, I hear you about McDonald's food. I generally avoid it for the same reasons you mention, plus, in my experience, the nuggets have this weird plasticy feel to them which turn me off.As for me, there must be something of a chili kick going on around here, because that's what I'm having for dinner tonight, lol. Re: Whatcha Eating?

@Thatguy three pounds of minced beef? That must be hge! We used a kilo of mince, (roughly half that if google is right on convertion), and that will give both of us two pretty good meals.I never like reheating take away if I can help it, pizza either goes rubbery or dry in my experience and loses flavour, ditto with most meet items. Indeed, we have an arrangement with our really nice local pizza and kebab place, where instead of giving us an extra free 10 inch garlic bread, which neither of  ever has room for,  just knock a couple of quid off the bill instead. This is  better since the garlic bread just doesn't reheat well at all.On the other hand generally any kind of stew or soup, chilly, different sorts of curry etc always seem to do well when reheated. I believe  it has something to do with the settling of the ingredients, and some professional chefs will even make chilly, gumbo etc and then reheat just for the extra flavour. Today I need to go shopping. One of the few saving graces of going shopping is that I get to go out for brunch. I'll probably head to  Faux american diner I mentioned and get one of their crispy sweet chilly chicken wraps, or maybe some pancakes. They actually make an amazing chilly, which I've had on its own before, but its  pretty big meal for the middle of the day, though they also make some very nice chillydogs too. In addition, they have the most wonderful rocky road cake as well. This was a relief, since  where I used to live in Durham there was an amazing little sandwich place called the picnic basket who also did the most amazing cakes, and I've been missing their rocky road. The rocky road at the american diner is not the same as the one in Durham, it has more coco  pouder and less toffee but  its really nice all the same. Sadly tea today will probably be something fairly small since we had the chily last night, likely just a quick microwave meal. These are okay if you firstly buy the right brand, since quality can vary hugely, and secondly if your not overly hungry, since whoever decides the portion sizes for those things isn't exactly generous, even for my wife who is tiny, but if I go and get something nice for brunch that should do quite well for dinner.

Coencidentally, I had chili as well. It contained a packet of regular chili powder and a packet of extra-spicy, 3 pounds of ground beef, noodles, tomato juice, onions, and lots more I can't remember. It was actually prepared yesterday and warmed up again today while the onion was chopped up and added, and it was quite amazing. Speaking of that, has anyone else noticed that chili tastes way better the day after, or is that just me? Also, while we're on the topic of  things tasting good the day after, and several days after, in fact, what foods have you guys noticed that don't have the consistency of rubber and actually taste just as well, if not better, than they did when originally cooked? I've seen that pizza always tastes more or less the same when you warm it up, and any fast food, especially fries, taste like packing peanuts. But what about you all?

@Jase Kay that sounds awesome, I love chouder and anything with chocolate. Today, I'm making a big pot of chilly which of all things we'll have with mashed potatoes, which will be nice, though unfortunately as it will cook all through this afternoon for  five and a half to six hours we'll be bloody hungry by the time its done :?D.

@That guy, interestingly enough, we  don't have any of those chain places in the UK. TGI fridays yes, subway and starbucks yes, but not olive garden etc. i did go to a rather nice Olive garden in New york with my lady's sister and her husband just before we got married when we went to watch the lion King, and that was lovely. Usually over here like everywhere else if we're going to eat out we tend to look for decent local places, albeit there are one or two national chains who are good for convenience. Take last night for example, I had a ridiculously gruelling interview yesterday regarding my disability benefits, so we were all really tired, so we wound up just going to weather spoons.for those none Brits, Weather spoons is sort of  a pub catering franchise and apparently they have over eight thousand in the UK. This means you can go to pubs in vastly different places and get mostly the same thing. its not exactly fast food of the McDonalds type, since it does involve cooking, but its not really properly restaurant food either, its  of what in the UK would be considered generic pub grub, fish and chips, curry, pies, perhaps a steak or two, sausage and mash, big breakfast etc. My lady, being a fanatic for fish had fish and chips, but for me I fancied something different so had hunters chicken, that is chicken breast smothered in bbq sauce topped with cheese and bacon, which came with chips, mushrooms peas and supposedly grilled tomatoes (though I missed those off because I am not into tomatoes in solid state). @Nocturnus, I do sympathise, when I was in the states I took my time to try some American things as well, including grits, and my brother in law's fairly awesome french toast and grilled cheese. its odd, we do toasted sandwiches over here quite a bit (indeed that's our usual breakfast), but the hole grilled cheese thing done in a pan is less common. Over here its more like a panini with cheese and ham etc. Interestingly enough, a local cafe I'm ratherfond of is a faux american diner, complete with fifties music, soem truly insane milk shakes, pancakes, hot dogs, burgers, etc, they even have imported root beer which isn't a usually available soft drink here. As to traditional English things,  my lady said Yorkshire pudding was a little like biscuits in America (which dsounds doubly odd given that buscuits means cookies over here), accept that yorshire puddings are made of a batter rather than a dough mix. She's had toad in the hole, that is sausages cooked in yorkshire, but wasn't crazy, on the other hand she really likes faggots. one thing I did find surprising in the states, and something Niel Gayman mentions in American Gods, is that you don't get cornish  pasties over there. these are similar to a pie, in that they're like a pastry case with stuff in, but tend to have thinner pastry and be more easy to pick up, since they originated in cornwell as a substantial lunch for tin miners. If  cooked  well they can have a very nicely done filling, like a slightly pepppered beef stew with potatoes and sweed, though if done badly can basically just have gravy in. Sadly, there are a lot of so called chain bakeries over here that do what a good friend of mine (himself from Cornwall), used to refer to as cornish facsimiles. Fortunately, we've found a really awesome local butcher (the same one who makes the faggots), who does most amazing cornish pasties, as well as several different types of pie including rabbit pie, and game pie (made with pheasant). Another thing which I will say about traditional English cooking which my lady mentioned, is that its very common to have  of vegitables with roasts over here, indeed my lady was a little surprised the first time my parents cooked her a roast dinner which included, as well as the roast chicken and stuffing, also, two different sorts of potatoes, carrots parsnips, brustle sprouts and cabbage. Indeed, to say I tend to be fairly carnivorous, I do love hot, properly prepared vedgies, though salad is  evil! .Really, why the hell did Prometheus bother stealing fire from the gods and getting his liver eaten by an eagle for people to go and eat salad! . This evening we're meeting some of my mum's friends  to go to a fantasy concert, with music including pirates of the Caribbean, final fantasy, and the hunger games, and before hand my parents are making  made lental soup and hot beef sandwiches, actually I'm getting bloody hungry since the beef has been in the slow cooker for the past ten hours, which is likely wy this is such a long post .

Re: Whatcha Eating?

@post 1, you'd think this topic would get more attention than it did, but surprisingly the right or not right topic somehow keeps showing up above this one haha. Anyway, about food now.Personally, I love food, but who doesn't? It is rather essential to survival, and tasting good is an added benefit, although, I'll admit, the one I think about most when eating. Some foods are good, and make you keep wanting  to come back to wherever you got them from for more, (oCharlies delicious rolls come to mind here, if you all know what that is). Others are great but don't have that lingering effect on you, like a lot of Mexican places or five star restaurants where price hovers over the experience of a tasty meal. I personally have a few favorites when it comes to eating out, both as far as places to go and what to eat. I'll do my best to stick with chain restaurants so people not from around here can follow, but as we all know, the best food usually don't come from them kinds of eateries. 1. Skyline Chili's. They have some really great food there, especially their chili, which for whatever reason they're kind of known for. Despite that, when visiting there, I usually pick me up a full rack of dry-rub babyback ribs with a side of french fries.2. Outback steakhouse. I love going here. As you might imagine, it's sort of an Australian-Themed restaurant, and you can't beat their bloomin onion or cheese fries. They have some pretty good burgers as well, and sometimes I'll tuck into an 8-ounce rib-eye too.3. The olive garden. Now, I typically dine American, but occasionally I'll step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Unfortunately, alergies prevent me from doing this quite a bit more often than I'd like, especially at seafood places. But anyway, the olive garden has some of the best dang Italian-Style chicken you could ever imagine. Their appetizer of breadsticks is hard to pass on as well.4. Cracker barrel. It's a chain, but they sure do have some good southern-style dishes. Of course, the local breakfast places are quite a bit better,, and home cooking is even better still, but I do enjoy their biscuits and gravy, and sometimes a short stack of dollar pancakes5. Bw3's (buffalo Wild Wings). Going to that place is always fun, particularly if you are a fan of hot stuff. When I go, I'll always get a small order of boneless wings topped with mango habanera, which is, I believe, one of their three hottest sauces. Now, I don't eat out as much as I'd like to, but who does? I can't really do the whole getting food delivered, I live out in, quite literally, the middle of nowhere. I barely get internet access out here, let alone get anything like Uber Eats or DoorDash to bring me anything. We actually have 2 places to eat in this whole county, a subway and a pretty good local diner called "Little Town And Country." , and they get me by when we don't feel like cooking. Now, as far as home cooking goes, my whole family's pretty good at it. Usually we'll go over to the next state, Indiana, which actually is where the closest grocery store is, get our groceries for the month, and we'll whip up all sorts of things depending on what we have left. Tonight, for example supper was something my dad made up called Cheeseburger casserole. I got no idea how he fixed it, but it was dang good. I had a nice can of coke to go along with it, which brings up the whole drinks discussion. What are your alls favorite things to drink with your meals? I prefer to go with the old stand-by, water, and I limit myself to 1 pop a week so as to stay healthy during track and field season, but sometimes I'll get me a glass of lemonade that I mixed using some of that minute-made stuff.Well, folks, what do you think? What are some of your favorite things to eat and where do you all like to eat them? Fast food does count, especially if it's Chick-Filet! Great chicken sandwiches, great waffle fries... and they're closed on Sunday, which I think is an awesome thing for them to do. Anyway, thoughts?

Re: Whatcha Eating?

@Dark,On the other side of the pond, as it were, McDonalds is pretty much the end all, be all if you're in for a quick fix and financially strapped, unless you're going the burger king rout, which mercifully we decided would probably be better.  Everything else is either expensive or out of my reach transportation wise.  UberEats and BiteSquad are making things a bit nicer around here and I've been able to sample things I would never have imagined having at home 10 years ago, but like all things in life, using any of these services requires money, and that is something I need to put back a bit more of now, being closer to the middle of the month.I keep telling my wife I'd like to visit the UK if only to sample things like Yorkshire puddings and the like, things that definitely aren't traditionally available in my neck of the woods.  Truth is, I'd really like to visit many parts of the world and try their authentic, typical, traditional delicacies.  I also don't mind trying other people's creative ideas, though I'm sure we can all agree there are people who can cook rather amazing meals and people who shouldn't be allowed in the kitchen.@Cinnamon,Nice sounding grilled cheese, that.  My brother's wife can whip up some awesome grilled cheeses when she's in the mood, but it's been years since I've had any of her's in particular.  I'll have to try your idea here at some point.  I've never been good at experimenting on this particular field, so having different cheeses honestly never occured to me...  I'm so lame.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

@Cinnamon, I've had various ramens and such at different places, but I don't think I've ever tried Pho.Interestingly enough, my Italian teacher used to say in Italy, Minastron wasn't just a type of soup, but a course on its own with a recipe a little like a Ramen,  a thick stock soup with noodles, or rice or vegitables, and usually beef or pork, but that the recipe changed according to who was making it. @Nocturnus, you will talk! if you talk we might give you some grub . Being at my parents we had  Mulagitony soup for lunch (soup again), though this one came from Aldy and was very nice, and  tea my mum is making a shepherd's pie, though probably  minced beef rather than lamb, which I believe technically makes it a cotage pie rather than a shepherds pie, but hay.she does a really interesting thing with the mince using Worcester sauce which always goes really well and gives it a great flavour. Its one of Mrs. dark's favourites. Also btw Nocturnus, I actually can't remember the last time I had mcdonalds. I do remember once going to a burger king a couple of years ago when on St. Pancrus station just looking for some hot food after a vocal studies workshop, but I don't think I've been to Mcdonalds themselves for ten or fifteen years if not longer, since usually there's a nicer alternative around, even in terms of fish and chips.

We had a blizzard here yesterday, so I made pho for dinner. It's Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I'm whiter than the whitest bread in the grocery store, but I love pho. It's warm and comforting. Somehow not as good without the boba tea to go along with it though, and it never tastes as good as sitting down in a restaurant and having someone else make and serve it. I'm also lazy, so I use boxed broth and premixed pho spice packets and cubes. I'll be making myself a gooey grilled cheese when I finish my work calls. Pepper jack cheese and sour dough bread!

Re: Whatcha Eating?

I have a love hate relationship with Dark's food related posts; I love the sound of all of it and hate the fact that I can't eat it.  If the CIA had to hire someone to torture criminals in an attempt to get information out of them, they should use Dark and hunger tactics. :dToday is going as planned; oatmeal turned out alright, but of course it would as there really is no trick to making such a thing.  It's looking like lunch is going to consist of McDonalds fish sandwitches with fries, unless someone can come along and put a huge dent in that idea...  I'll be waiting.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

@5 damn that menu sounds like heaven! Not sure what I'll have tomorrow... might consider ordering Chinese again, my mom makes this really good Chinese noodles/rice with chicken combination that's really good. She also got this recipe from work that described how ot make a delicious enchilada -- and yes, it was delicious! If memory serves, it was chese and chicken wrapped in a tortilla covered in cheese. And it had something else too... damn I can't remember now!

Re: Whatcha Eating?

Actually this is quite an appropriate  topic, since just a few hours ago my brother and I took my dad out for a rather interesting meal at a restaurant attached to a local catering college. they always do some pretty  interesting stuff, and being a test  case for students studdying to be silver service chefs and table staff isn't a bad thing, especially since you tend to get amazingly good grub at amazingly cheap prices. Occasionally they do special events or themed nights, EG meals from around the world, and yesterday was a butcher's evening with a really amazing local butcher who repeatedly wins the  national sausage championships, (No I didn't know there was a national competition for sausage making either, but apparently there is).. Here is the menu since it was an interesting one; Pig in blanket, Merguez, black pudding & chicken lemon & tarragon chipolatas with a Nottingham EPA flatbread and garlic mayo~Royal Savoury Ducks (faggots)With English style gravy or Hungarian Pörkölt sauce, lattice crisps and mushy pea purée~Snooty ‘Snag’ & MashChoose 3 sausages from the following national gold award winning sausages:Magyar, Lincoln, Old Original, Cumberland Gold or Robin Hood venison & pork. Served with wholegrain mash and thick English gravy~The Sweet Snobby DogChoose from either: a chocolate, cappuccino and chili sausage or caramelised banana filled hot dog doughnut bun with and raspberry coulis ketchup and custard mustardOh, and btw before we horrify any Americans, "faggots" in this case is a spicy, large sized meatball cooked with grain, somewhat similar to a haggis. They're popular in the north of England and extremely nice, Mrs. Dark has great fun telling everyone back in Pennsylvania how she enjoys roast faggots for tea .The meal itself was lovely. Though it was obviously heavy on the meat, things  calculated so you didn't end up feeling bloated afterwards, the dessert was particularly awesome, which yes, did indeed look like a hot dog, but with a doughnut instead of a hot dog bun. the Pork sausage with chocolate and chilly was not as sweet as it sounds, but went very well with the doughnut, even my dad, who is not a lover of desserts really enjoyed it. also, the Hungarian sauce with the faggots was really nice, though as I am a fan of goulash and the sauce was a  recipe it  definitely my sort of thing.Sadly today grub will be a bit more ordinary, as I'm staying at my parents for a  days my mum will probably do porridge and maple syrup for breakfast, though as its about six in the morning here at the second that probably won't be for a few hours . Usually its my mum who cooks because she always does, though dad cooks occasionally, he tends to be a bit more experimental where mum is a bit more traditional. Ironically in my case its usually me who cooks, though often my  definition of "cooking" just involves chucking stuff in the oven or at most slinging some meet and some cook in sauce into the slow cooker and letting it sit  a few hours.

Re: Whatcha Eating?

I just had teriyaki grilled salmon and mushrooms, and a bottle of orange juice. I usually have something much more bizarre, but these have to do for now. People usually cringe when I tell them what I actually like, lol.

Whatcha Eating?

Because food is a topic you can come back to again and again, I advocate for keeping this open so long as you, or I, or the guy and the girl next door, or their brother's sister's cousin's boyfriend's foodstamps caseworker's great grandmother's pet chicken comes in and talks about what we're all eating today, tonight, tomorrow, in three weeks, whatever! My last meal of the day consisted of a three cheese pizza topped with tons of pepperoni, breadsticks and some squarish cinamon rolls... I have it from my wife they were supposedly also pizza and that they were shaped more like triangles, but the piece I got was squarish, meaning she didn't cut it right... Ha ha ha!  I had apple pie for breakfast, because I don't really know how to be original and skipped lunch altogether.Tomorrow, I know that I'm in charge of making oatmeal and buttered toast for a certain woman who shall not be named...  I'm still not sure what I'll be eating for breakfast, which is partially why I started this topic; maybe you'll help me?Oh, and BTW, just talk about food, even if you're not eating it!  Chicken wings, candy, potato chips, hamburgers, ice cream, pickly pickled pickles pickled by picklers... I have two cats talking about food on my bed!  What more can you do!
