Re: any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

The hard part isnt creation. I mean, there are loads of tools that will do that. The hard part really is just to secure the machine where the stuff comes from, and make sure that its configured right. I, personally, wont settle for anything lesss than root access, but for reliable distribution, IMHO S3 and CloudFront simply cant be beaten. You pay _almost_ nothing--I mean, so close to _actually_ nothing as makes no odds. Seriously. All you need is a client that will ship shit to S3. I will leave the details to some other poor sod who has more time. Possibly me, later.

Re: any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

If by creation you mean construction of the pages etc then thats relatively fine. Its just making sure I have not only enough space etc, but also an easy way of accessing it from anywhere as I might need to add/modify on the go etc.Hopefully you can provide more information later.I know several forum members like robjoy use chyrp, which seems to only run on lynux but Im not exactly sure. If anyone could confirm this then it would be useful, as those kinds of platforms actually look ok in some respects.

Re: any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

As long as its just static files, you just need software for your platform that creates so-called Buckets in S3 that match the DNS name of your entity, and then point a CNAME record to that bucket. A bit harder if you put CloudFront in, but not that much harder. Now you modify your bucket contents, as appropriate. Thats really it.I realise now that as a user of command-line tools more than anything, I will need to defer to some Windows user (are you on Windows?) for the relevant help using S3 there. But thats really about the shape of it.

Re: any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

I am indeed on windows. The only reason I dont quite like the idea of these services is that you do have to pay. Not that Im against paying for anything, I simply just want to test out getting a site up and running, being able to control the content as and when I see fit. The issue as well is that there are so many dodgy looking web hosts that whilst appearing to offer free websites will make you pay for things later. This is why I wanted suggestions and ideas. The worst part is that the only accessible web host I could find at least is this one, which is apparently only available to those in the U.S.I might edit this post later to reflect any additionaly thoughts.

Re: any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

The problem really is that not paying is fundamentally uneconomical. I know, its just you and your silly test site, but imagine if everybody had the same idea. It cant work, because hosting and bandwidth arent free. The solutions that have been discussed, and many others, which are in any way credible, are ultimately supported by something--usually ads. And theres a penalty to using them, like using a site builder tool or some such thing.S3 is very cheap. Pennies cheap. So cheap that youll wonder what all the fuss was about when the bill comes round cheap. Its not for everybody, but its based on actual request volume and is thus the best deal you can possibly get. You really should look it up. It does what you are asking for.

Re: any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

@GhorthalonIm not saying whether I accept the offer or not, at least not at this fairly early stage in the process. Im just trying to understand how getting the site up and running would work, partly because I want the satisfaction of being able to say I got the site up and running myself.I have been looking at /nikola, curtacy of camlorne and it looks like an interesting direction, although I dont really know how to get it working at present. If camlorne has any advice on this matter it would be much appreciated.I understand that you need 2 things:A server: a place to store your files for your site.A domain: an address to redirect people to that server.I believe, curtacy of an earlier post on this topic, that Ive found my server - freehostingnoadds, but Im just having trouble finding a domain that
doesnt look even slightly dodgy.I actually wanted, as I stated earlier, to set up my own site and everything on my own as even though it would be a learning curve, I would, at least in theory, know how to do it in the future if I needed it and have the satisfaction of knowing my way round the various administrative pannels etc. What Im essentially asking is, how exactly would I modify my existing content if I went with your offer, for example, without going through you?In terms of the amount of space I need it most likely wont be much. Thanks again for the offer, its very generous of you.

@GhorthalonThere are a couple of problems I would have with that:If I wanted to get more server space, I would have to go through you to ensure the transition goes smoothly. Not that I would really mind, but it would be mildly inconvenient if, say you were on holiday. The most pressing problem however, is that free dot tk domains require 25 unique hits every 90 days otherwise they are taken down. With a small website as it will be, it most likely wont get the hits it needs. This is why I wondered if anyone else had a guide to setting up a free domain and hosting, with a service similar to dot tk that doesnt have the hit limit...@roroIve looked at your website, but did you put html files into that? there wasnt much formatting like headings and such which I would like to have on any site for ease of navigation...Thanks for the help thus far.

Re: any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

www.free-webhosts.com, if its still up, iss a complete directory of free hosts, complete with reviews and ratings, and detailed information about each free webhost. Or, if you want to go the dropbox route, Id suggest registering a domain and then forwarding it to the url of your index page. There are free short sub-domain services out there such as .usa.cc, .co.nr etc, where you can register domains and forward them. Also, theres a free top-level domain called dot.tk where you can do the same thing, though it requires a captcha to be filled out.Another good webhost, though probably not as good as free hosting no ads, is 0fees.net. It doesnt provide much space, but still has auto script installer with support for your basic scripts, and quick loading times. Also, Ive tried 000webhost.com, but my site was always down. Just some suggestions to throw out there, since Ive s
pent 5 years with, or looking for, a website host.

Hi,I really dont understand how this discussion has not included the hundreds of free webhosting providers out there. Theres heaps and heaps of webhosts that offer subdomains and storage for free. You get what you pay for in that regard, not a heck of a lot of support and you have to search around a little for a good deal but for basic websites this is more than enough.Balliol

There are a couple options that come to mind:First, if youre willing to fiddle around, there are google sites. They have a bit of stuff at the top of each page, but theyre workable.Secondly, and I would personally say much better, is to just use dropbox. Youre site will have a wierd link, but theres nothing easier than simply editing all of your files on your computer and having them instantly up and ready to go. Just put your site in your public folder, and give the link to index.html and youre good to go. The only problem with this approach is that you get slightly limited bandwidth (20gb/day for free, 200gb/day for paid).

Hi,, theres 000webhosting.com, but that gives you limited space. So what I advice you to do is to create an account there and upload your html files in there. Since it gives you limited space, you should upload the files you want to share to a file sharing site.

Re: any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

Thanks for the reply Tom. I know that hosting wouldnt be very expensive if done off of my own computer, but personally at this point in time I wouldnt exactly know where to begin. HTML is all fine and good but actually getting a 24/7 server up and running and registering a domain etc? Im not sure where to start.I also know that pelantas had a tutorial that explained where to get a free domain and other useful tips like that, in some kind of program. If anyone else has this tutorial, then it would be greatly appreciated if it could be uploaded, as I cant seem to find it anywhere.

any recommendations for website hosting that isn't paid?

I am aware that there is a topic on web hosting already in this room.  However, I am not looking to pay.  I would like an accessible free web host, where I could upload HTML pages and content etc.  If I could tie an e-mail address into this site as well for contact purposes it would be very useful.has anyone got any suggestions that would help here?thanks in advance.

The phrase FreeWebHosting comes under a spam filter, whereas the phrase web hosting doesnt... Could this possibly be fixed?
