Re: [Aus-soaring] Tablet recommendations?

2016-04-04 Thread Mike Borgelt

Mark,

I was thinking more of the phone designer's
tradeoffs. Larger screen, more power for same
brightness per square centimeter in the
backlight. A 5"screen has 56% more area than a
4". I've noticed in the specs that the larger
screens generally have lower brightness.
The phones have very fancy power management
schemes (for better battery life on a full
charge) which are substantially negated by
leaving the backlight on full brightness and by
running the processor to constantly update the moving map.
Yes, you should run the phone/PNA whatever from
ship's supply. Darryl is right about power
supplies. Some are terribly noisy. Erich
Wittstock found one from Seedstudio that appears to be quiet. See:

CPT-C5 power converter 12V/24V switch to 5V

CPT-C5
power converter 12V/24V switch to 5V

SKU: 313080006

I bought 5 but shipping wasn't all that cheap
which substantially increased the landed cost.

Be very careful to chose a low noise stepdown converter if you want to use
ACFT supply then. I was drastically reducing my comms radio receiver
sensitivity when adjusting its squelch to reduce white noise generated by a
cheap converter. Ended up going back to Borgelts original supply but
increased the fuse size there first.

>>to move the power consumption issue somewhere else

Of course this is a vexed question. Which power is the least essential?

The power to your EPIRB or Spot or InReach is arguably the most
important… or to your phone if you are using this for SAR stuff. So if
you also using it for navigation, you want to make sure the battery is
fully charged when you outland!

Alternatively carry an Aldi backup battery or solar powered recharger
if you are prepared to wait overnight. You know what I mean.

Using big screens such as the LX9000 as well as things like a ADS-B
can mean that the battery drain is double what it might have been with
a simple nav system.

I'm looking into those tiny "personal diesel generators" being
developed for military backpack use where the modern soldier has to
remain wired all the time.

Hi Greg,

I know this might be a stupid idea, but if you can get 28v and you have a
proper sized panel or Dimona or Falk.?

A used KLN89b fir GPS is now worth about $500.00
They are still supported and have a proper data base.
If you have a AH and ever got into trouble this thing would get you on the
ground.

Just a silly thought,

It's a good site to chose an new Android. I bought a google/LG NEXUS 5x last

My Sony would not charge when it got hot, so no good. I have been using a Dell

As for Greg's original question, it depends
what sort of motorglider we are talking about.
If it is a travelling type that is going to
operate in and around controlled airspace and
being used as a cross country point to point
machine you really need to run OzRunways or
AvPlan on an iPad mini. There is an Android
version of the latter but it is pretty crippled

Interesting about the Kobo. This exact cycle
was gone through nearly 20 years ago when the
first PDA's came out. They had grey scale
screens which were transflective and highly
visible in bright sunlight(the brighter the
better). Then they went colour and became
nearly useless. Screen technology has improved
since then but the colour feature looks pretty
and is a nice eye magnet with lots of
background clutter to get in the way without
doing much for situational awareness. Bad
design that failed to actually ask which
problem was being solved (this is a common
problem in many areas of life - there are few
real problems which can't be made worse by

As for Greg's original question, it depends what
sort of motorglider we are talking about. If it
is a travelling type that is going to operate in
and around controlled airspace and being used as
a cross country point to point machine you
really need to run OzRunways or AvPlan on an
iPad mini. There is an Android version of the
latter but it is pretty crippled as yet. Good as
a backup on an Android phone though.

Interesting about the Kobo. This exact cycle was
gone through nearly 20 years ago when the first
PDA's came out. They had grey scale screens
which were transflective and highly visible in
bright sunlight(the brighter the better). Then
they went colour and became nearly useless.
Screen technology has improved since then but
the colour feature looks pretty and is a nice
eye magnet with lots of background clutter to
get in the way without doing much for
situational awareness. Bad design that failed to
actually ask which problem was being solved
(this is a common problem in many areas of life
- there are few real problems which can't be
made worse by imposing solutions for the wrong
problem - see much of aviation regulation).

Richard you are absolutely right about the number of NITS.

People don't seem to know about this measure of brightness. I believe the
nexus is about 700 and is only just just enough in my opinion.

2016-04-02 Thread Peter F Bradshaw
Hi;

A few photos of my Kobo showing what it looks like in the air and some
construction details. The display is good enough that it becomes part of
the instrument scan. The Kobo I use is an older Touch (Model N905C). I
have been using this for over two years with no problems - even on those
days when the ground temp is over 40 deg.

The B&W Kobo is very popular on the HG's these days. Total sunlight
readable and great battery life (in case you want to save wires...)

Not a tablet, but OpenVario is worth checking out.
openvario.org

Still in the fledgling stages. I'm building one, get in touch quick if you
want to double up on parts orders.

I have see way to many setups which block the view.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Tablet recommendations?

2016-04-02 Thread Jacques Graells
+1 for the cube T7 with XCSOAR

Very similar readability as the Nexus 7 II, the black are not as black but same
readability.

Not as good readability as an LX8000 but not the same price tag either.

3G/4G (make sure you get one that supports 850Mhz so it works on Telstra,
unfortunately I don’t think it does 700Mhz for 4G in the country but 3G 850Mhz
is more important, very few tablets do 700Mhz UMTS) so you can use it to
directly track to livetrak24 or skylines

Make a shortcut to bom and you see the rain radar in 2 taps while XCSoar still
runs in background without mucking around unlocking your phone etc.

I used one for my last 40 hours flying and unlike the Nexus 7 II (which I used
before the cube T7), it never disconnected from IOIO

Mine is permanently connected to the power, Flarm, Vario, ASI, Nano (via IOIO)
and always turned on, it never overheated.

YMMV but it works very well for me

Jacques

There are many options. Many are difficult to see in direct sunlight but you
can change font size and black on white, or white on black text may assist.
But I suggest you only need to see the screen every few minutes, not
continuously….

A Tablet is fine, but a mobile phone would mean you could be online in the air.
I use a Galaxy Note Edge phone mainly with the screen off but available at the
push of the on-off switch and the battery lasts about 6 hours. And it logs all
the flight. And you could also be on Livetrack24?

1. Why not use free XCSoar on an android Nexus 7 [$150] but set up
different info boxes appropriate to your powered flying as AUX 2, 3, 4 etc.

2. Use an [your? Or a Chinese $100] android phone as above. Note the
phone means you could download BOM Radar real time pictures as you fly along.

3. Note also on many Android boxes you can briefly push the on-off switch
to kill the screen and save battery and box heating. Push the on-off again and
the screen and data is up to date.

4. Buy a Cube T7 7” android mobile phone for a bit more screen space.
Less than $200 on EBay ex Hong Kong… not sure the screen will be bright enough
without some shading.

5. Spend much more money at Apple iTunes on commercial aircraft software
if you like and be tied forever to proprietary software.

6. Load XCSoar on your Oudie, its easy and arguably more user friendly.
And software and updates are free but probably not ICAO compliant, but it works.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Tablet recommendations?

2016-04-01 Thread DMcD
>> for use as nav device in a motor-glider?

As a nav device, that is where you don't want a glide computer, you
can't go far wrong with a large phone like an iPhone 6 and Ozrunways
on a Ram mount..

The modern phones are adequately bright and the large-screen versions
such as the iPhone 6S have a really good battery life.

A few of us have found that even a small tablet such as the iPad mini
can be too large for a sailplane. You'd have more room in a motor
glider cockpit.

If you are going to mount it somehow using something like a Ram mount,
the size of the lump is considerable. The weight of the tablet and
what happens in turbulence needs to be thought about too. So the
slightly smaller phone is less of a problem.

It's also worth considering whether you are using other nav apps as
well and things like Inreach Earthmate apps for SAR etc before jumping
into a particular platform which may support things like XCSoar well
but not the others.

The Kobo’s are sensational for readability. I still have 2 of the Kobo Mini’s
running XCSoar but found they are flaky once the temp gets “Aussie hot” and the
touch screen becomes unresponsive… Not sure about the newer Touch and Glo, but
after numerous flights with a nonresponsive touch screen I went Android and
Nexus.
