Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder Question

2014-01-12 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Lisa,

Sometimes, IT (Information Technology) is just so "duh!"

Look at the list of matches. To the right of the photo area are 4 icons.
1) Envelope. This is the email address
2) A cartoon balloon. This is where you can make notes about your match (I
like the notepad much better).
3) A box with 3 boxes below. This is the Gedcom.
4) A goofy twisted arrows, like an X. This is the "In Common With." Click
on that and a pop up comes up and you can pick In Common With or Not In
Common With.

Of course IT did not put any little pop up windows. Geez, if you pointed
at the icons and a pop up appeared and told you what it was, you'd know.
Sometimes, IT drives me nuts.

HI Carl,

Knowing that you are researching a grandfather is not helpful. I don't
know if you are a 60 year old man researching about 1900 or a 20 year old
man researching in the 1940s.

Try posting the vitals you have on Manuel S. Alburquerque. Date and place
of birth, date and place of marriage, etc. Also places where he lived.

Generally, most people make a connection to the list about 200 years back,
so that's the early 1800s. Remember, I said generally. Not always.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel S. Albuquerque Sr.

2014-01-12 Thread Carl Albuquerque
Greetings,

My Grandfather, Manuel Albuquerque is buried in Ponta Delgada. I recently
found a letter from him to my father, indicating his three neighbors who
had "HAM" radio licenses in the 1970s:

CT2AC: Jose Oliveira
CT2AK: Joao Raposo
CT2BC: Gil Carreiro

I'm very interested if any of these names ring a bell, and I'm also
interested in finding out more about where my Grandfather is buried, his
final days, etc.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Rodovalho of Sao Miguel

2014-01-12 Thread John Raposo
There are Rodovalhos in S. Miguel before that, but remember, vital records, in
most parishes, do not go back that far. RR has a marriage in 1530, and a will
in 1534 for Rodovalho descendants in S. Miguel.

I suppose the 1584 date is what you can find now in records. If that is when
they arrived, then I suppose they did come over from Terceira, because it's at
least another 100 years older on Terceira.

I have a line from Pico and one from Terceira, but haven't yet hooked them up

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Where else to look for Moniz Machado ancestors

2014-01-12 Thread Maria Lima
Margaret: thank you for taking to e to help me find these ancestors.

I started questioning if these ancestors themselves made a mistake on their
year of birth. I've started looking before and after the years they gave as
their birth year. I signed up again for Ancestry a week ago and have been
using it in addition to family search and the CCA.

I'm still puzzled how you found the mother and 3 boys. I didn't see the
attachment but I, going to try to find it. I spent pretty much all day
yesterday trying to find and verify Manuel on the Sao Jose freguesia. No luck.
Tried Sao Sebastao and Faja de Cima also but no luck. It was hard to
accomplish stuff around the house because I was so driven to find this
information.

I had already looked for the older brothers, Clemente and Domingo's in Sao
Jose. Clement's birth was Feb 9, 1869 andDomingo's was feb 8, 1874. I
think when I find one of them- I hope I'll find the others in the same
location. I was really surprised when you found their parents married in the
Sao Jose parish because I had looked for the two older boys' baptisms several
times to no avail. I didn't know about Maria , and now Manuel that you found
traveling with Emilia.

I thought the marriage record states that. Emilia's parents were from Sao Jorge
island, they lived on Rua Cappas in the parish of Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada. So
I'm still going to look to see if Emilia went back to her mother's parish in St
George, to baptize the children. I'm reaching here, but I dont know what
explanation there could be for the missing baptismal records.

You have truly been an angel in helping me and imparting your knowledge. Thank
you.

P S. If it's convenient, could you send me the link for their sailing.

It appears that the older son, Clemente, (if that's his real name, sailed
before them based on his census Data. I found him under Clement Marshall, b
1869, married to Theodora (Dora) Ferreira and I was amazed. To learn his first
marriage was to Annie Lindgren who died. She was widowed from HER first
husband and His second wife, Dora, had been married before to George Reynolds
and HE died. So I got a lot on Clem"s life. I know about him from my mother
in law. She spoke tenderly of her Uncle Clem. Have a good Sunday.

Yeah I only know Spanish, and to me its is very similar (writing not
speaking) I had gone thru Spanish/Latin Church records for years before
attempting to look at the Portuguese records. Stupid on my part, I could of
been done with this all years ago!! (I started back in 1996) But I had it
in my mind that it was going to be extremely hard to read the Portuguese
records. Which it is not, the more you read the easier it becomes.

Happy New Year everyone!

Before FTDNA changed the layout, I used to be able to sort results by "in
Common with" and I do not seem to be able to find that now.

I have a match from my grandmother that shows a 2nd to 4th cousin relationship
and would like to see who else matches him.

Thanks and I am looking forward to meeting all of you who will be attending the
Azores Genealogy Conference in Salt Lake City this April!

That's all? You mean they didn't live anywhere else? :-)I suppose the 1584 date is what you can find now in records. I Have Manuel Moreno who maried Maria Cabral March 1703 son of Antonio

Hi Manoel,From your message, I see Rodovalho is not a recent introduction to Sao Miguel. I thought maybe it came over from Terceira. Are you lucky enough to have older generations mentioned by Rodrigo Rodrigues?Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] USA Online Records

2014-01-12 Thread Eileen Leite
In some fortunate baptism entries there is a note in the margin that gives
the marriage info. As I understand it, sometimes contact was made with the
church of baptism when a person got married, to confirm they were indeed
baptized in the church and to assure they were not married before. I have
seen such entries in Irish-American parishes. Or the entry might be made
later, I don't know for what purpose. The word "Casou" is your tip!

I have one baptism record that lists his two wives and lots of relevant
dates in the margin!

By the way, this was the way I identified my husband's great-grandmother's
birth record. I was uncertain on her parents' names, she was born a couple
of years earlier than her obit would have us believe, and it turned out she
was a Maria "Second of that name". Oy. It was only the margin note that
told me it was her. Oh happy day that was!

Here is the note: (as best as I could transcribe it, those notes are so
scrawled!): "Casou com Jose Pedro Leite nem Igrejia parochial de freguesia
Ponta Garca desta concelho, 17 de Marco de 1897. Avanto (?) de? 11 de
Octobre 1982." (Question marks mine, impossible to make out the writing. ) I
don't understand the last part, or why someone would want that info in 1982.
She died in 1941.

As hard as they can be to decipher, you have to look carefully at those
baptism margin notes! They can give marriage and death dates.

Richardo, There are many Manuel Rochas married in Fall River in 1910. Can
you give us more information to go on. Also, how can a birth record tell
when/where someone was married? Sam in Maz
