[AZORES-Genealogy] RootsTech

2016-01-23 Thread Ken Waters
Hi Fellow Researchers,

I'm attending RootsTech in one week in SLC. Is anyone else on this list
going also? Let me know if you are or would like to meet up there. This
will be my first time attending. Too bad there aren't any Azores classes
as part of it! Hah, Cheri, João, and Rosemarie take care of that quite
well already.

Probably my biggest interest is in DNA research as I really enjoy doing
that and learning more ways to use the tools, especially on Gedmatch. I
have 10 kits (with 2 more coming, my kids to be added soon) that I have
added to the website including my own (#A979857). There are about 4
sessions on DNA work scheduled.

Dionísio Fragoso and Catarina de Revoredo are my 10th great-grandparents. I
descend from their son Domingos, who married Barbara (or Maria) Curvelo on 21
Feb 1628. I don't have information on any of their other children.

Repost for Jo Mello Hartmann , joa1943 at yahoo.com

Hi!  My maiden name is Mello - my grandfather's name was Manuel Fregoso Mello.
He was born on one of the Azorean islands in 1866!  I believe he emigrated to
Hawaii in 1881 where he married Maria Medeiros abt 1888/9.  Records a little
shaky.  I understand the name Mello was so common in Hawaii the family was
using Fregoso as their surname while there for a timethat could just be a
family story..Most of the 16 kids were born in Hawaii, as was my father,
Ernest Mello in 1901!
Don't know how common Fragoso/Fregoso was in Azores..

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Jennie Solomon Silva Borba and sisters

2016-01-23 Thread Cheri Mello
If somehow, the 3 were smuggled onboard, then there would be no record of
them leaving the Azores. However, many times family stories are just that -
stories - so it wouldn't hurt to check to see if they were outbound from
the Azores. Only 2 ports still have their passaportes records in existence
for the 1860s: Horta and Angra. Click here: http://tombo.pt/d/acores

As for American arrival records - most stowaways were discovered and
counted on the American end (I've seen it). These Customs Passenger Lists
exist for the ports of New Bedford, Providence, and New York, however, for
the 1860s, only Providence has some from 1866-67 (available in the National
Archive microfilm publication M575; indexed in M334), and New York. New
York was known as Castle Garden. They may have stopped at New York first
before going to New Bedford or Providence. You can search Castle Garden by
using Steve Morse's site here: http://stevemorse.org/ellis/cg.html

"Sound" is rather vague. How do you know it wasn't Boston, MA or Bristol &
Warren, RI or Edgartown, MA or Gloucester, MA or Newport, RI? All had ports
operating in the 1860s. Don't know which ones would be considered as having
a sound.

You can get more information about this from "American Passenger Arrival
Records" by Michael Tepper. Your public library probably has the book.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2016-01-23 Thread Marilyn Thompson
Another thought about a software program. Many of the current programs like
Ancestral Quest and Roots Magic have simplified version online that are
free to download. These free downloads do not have all the bells and
whistles the full programs have, but they should let you merge two GEDCOMS.

You should be able to go through and eliminate the duplicates.

Just an idea

[AZORES-Genealogy] Finding my relatives in Pico

2016-01-23 Thread Anita Alves
My great grandparents were Antonio and Rose Da Silva (or possibly da Silveira).
My great grandmother was born in 1856. They lived in Pico Azores. According to
my father They had 13 children. 7 immigrated to America including my
grandmother Rosa Paulina Silveira (possibly Silva). My great grandfather had at
least 2 sisters Teresa and Mary, one or both immigrated to New York. He had 1
brother who may have immigrated to Brazil. My grandmother's siblings who stayed
in Pico were Evelyn (lindares), Alvera (Pimental), Alzira (Gomez), John Silva.
My great aunt Hilda visited my great grandparents' home in Piedade, Pico,
Azores in 1928 or 1929.

My grandmother married Joseph Alves Sr. in about 1906 in Sacramento California.
Not much is known about the Alves family. My great grandparents immigrated to
California. They had 3 children my father, Mary Alves (Patrick) and Teresa
Alves (Roger).

I have wanted to find out information about my family in the Azores. My father
gave me this information before he passed away.

I have Frogoso folks way back in Lagoa (Rosario). My 8th greatgrandfather

[AZORES-Genealogy] Marriage separation?

2016-01-23 Thread Mark
Hello,

Can anyone take a look at this record and let me know what you think:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-CANDELARIA-B-1880-1889/SMG-PD-CANDELARIA-B-1880-1889_item1/P172.html

It is a baptism record for a Maria (entry # 39) that doesn't list her
father or say exposto or pai incognito. I can make out what looks like
seperada (9th line). Does this mean the parents were seperated?

I have about four other baptism records for the same couple that showed
they were the parents of exposto children and in all theses records, the
wife (Emilia de Jesus) was always listed on the record first, then it said
casada ? Rufino da Camara. Maybethis record just doesn't mention him this
time but what is with the "seperada"?

This record doesn't mention him at all. Could they have been seperated? I
don't see any words that can mean dead or buried. I don't think I've heard
of couples being separated back then in the Azores. I'm sure it's possible
but I have just never come across it.

As a side note, of the 4 records for exposto children I believe Emilia and
Rufino took in, 3 of them have their names smudged or erased from the index
pages of these books. Was that done on purpose to protect them later on in
life? I know from my limited research into Azores genealogy that the "tag"
of Exposto or pai incognito usually followed a person with them into most
other records like passports, marriage, death. Why try to erase their
status from the indices of these books?

Any advice or suggestions anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
I don't think enough credit is given to many of the group members who help
others with translations or advice on many different topics. I know I for
one wouldn't get far in my research with out the help the members provide
so thanks for that.

I need help with the Fragoso last name and I was wondering if any of you have
ever seen this before, where a last name just seems to appear out of nowhere.

so, I have discovered something interesting. In all of the records that I
have discovered so far on my father's side the last name is always d'Andrade.
There are only 2 entries where Fragoso is referenced. 1. Manuel's baptismal
certificate has his father's last name as d'Andrade (no mention of Fragoso) but
on Maria Jose Cabral's (his wife) baptismal record, there is a margin notation
that she married Manuel d'Andrade Fragoso (now they added Fragoso to his last
name). 2. The other record which shows Fragoso is on a birth record of Maria
who's father's name is Manuel D'Andrade Fragoso (not the same manuel as above
but tracing the lineage he was brother of the Manuel above's father). Does
that make sense? Anyhow, this is a bit of a mystery. How and why did the
Fragoso name just appear?

Here is the record for Manuel D'Andrade

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-RABODEPEIXE-B-1895-1899/SMG-RG-RABODEPEIXE-B-1895-1899_item1/P239.html

Here is the record for Maria Jose (margin notation where Fragoso is now added
the Manuel d'Andrade's last name)

Here is the record for Maria who's father is Manuel dAndrade Fragoso brother
to Jacintho d'Andrade father of the Manuel above

also download a Gedcom of her tree. Then she should start a new file,
family, project (whatever it is called in FTM) and merge the 2 Gedcoms
together and then begin the clean up process (you guys probably did data
entry differently). After you have it the way you like it, upload it to
Ancestry in place of one of the trees and eliminate the other tree.

You mom can make a Gedcom of the merged tree and send it to you. If you
want to open it or view it though, you will need a genealogy software
program to do that. If you are mom's backup copy, then you are fine.

Gedcom directions (both uploading and downloading) are here:

Well, there might be something to the story as I descend from the Fragoso line
of Lagoa, however two generations down the line one son carried on with the
Fragoso name while my ancestor took on the name Meireles. His son, was first
married in Rabo de Peixe. Linda mentions Madalena carried the name Meireles
which makes me wonder if there is indeed a connection.

funny things. No one wants to call grandma a liar, but if she is telling a

Manuel's baptism had margin notes. Only 1 marriage was noted. I think it said
he married in the 1920s. Those records are not online. I've seen margin notes
where they noted the marriage, noted that the marriage was dissolved by death
of the spouse and they married a 2nd time. Could someone have forgot to note a
marriage? Well, they are human and humans make mistakes. But probably not. The
only way to be sure would be to order Manuel's marriage from the 1920s and see
if it says he was the widower of and is marrying Maria Cabral.

You need to go back to Manuel's parents' marriage - the marriage of Jacinto
d'Andrade and Escolastica de Jesus. It's in Rabo de Peixe in 1896. It's going
to clarify some of your questions above and raise more.

28 is not too old to get married. Many married when they were older in the
Azores.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Looking for any Fragoso descendants from Sao Miguel

2016-01-23 Thread Linda McLellan
I need help with the Fragoso last name and I was wondering if any of you
have ever seen this before, where a last name just seems to appear out of
nowhere.

so, I have discovered something interesting. In all of the records that I
have discovered so far on my father's side the last name is always
d'Andrade. There are only 2 entries where Fragoso is referenced. 1.
Manuel's baptismal certificate has his father's last name as d'Andrade (no
mention of Fragoso) but on Maria Jose Cabral's (his wife) baptismal record,
there is a margin notation that she married Manuel d'Andrade Fragoso (now
they added Fragoso to his last name). 2. The other record which shows
Fragoso is on a birth record of Maria who's father's name is Manuel
D'Andrade Fragoso (not the same manuel as above but tracing the lineage he
was brother of the Manuel above's father). Does that make sense? Anyhow,
this is a bit of a mystery. How and why did the Fragoso name just appear?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Looking for any Fragoso descendants from Sao Miguel

2016-01-23 Thread JR
I will send you private email. There may be an error somewhere. The good
news is that they are all part of the same Andrade line. This Manuel de
Andrade is one generation removed and is the brother of Jacinto Andrade cc
Escolastica de Jesus in RP, Nov 4- 1896. Their parents are Francisco de
Andrade and Maria Candida or Maria da Conceicao married in RP, Feb 19- 1852

As to names appearing out of nowhere, this is not likely, but it is
possible that on occasion a spouse may adopt the surname of the other
spouse or someone in the family. Just keep collecting the baptisms and
marriages related people and you may find a clue to the Fragosos.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] help with parents name in porto formoso

2016-01-23 Thread JR
Who is your ancestor that leads to Catarina Viveiros and Manuel de Sousa
Costa? Their names and marriage date? Yes, Anna Viveiros is the sister of
Catarina Viveiros, Francisca Viveiros and Barbara Viveiros, all children of
Silvestre de Viveiros and Maria Ferreira said to be natives of Porto
Formoso. Records are sketchy in this time period. Silvestre Viveiros cc
Maria Ferreira probably about 1696 or thereabouts. Silvestre married a
second time to Barbara Carneiro in Fenais da Ajuda, Nov- 1714.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-FENAISAJUDA-C-1707-1730/SMG-RG-FENAISAJUDA-C-1707-1730_item1/P21.html

Page is torn, missing date, occurs just before Dec 5- 1714, which is next
record

I think Silvestre may have married Maria Ferreira in Fenais da Ajuda also,
but those records are torn, missing or unreadable.

Hello,
Can anyone take a look at this record and let me know what you think:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-CANDELARIA-B-1880-1889/SMG-PD-CANDELARIA-B-1880-1889_item1/P172.html

It is a baptism record for a Maria (entry # 39) that doesn't list her father or
say exposto or pai incognito. I can make out what looks like seperada (9th
line). Does this mean the parents were seperated?
I have about four other baptism records for the same couple that showed they
were the parents of exposto children and in all theses records, the wife
(Emilia de Jesus) was always listed on the record first, then it said casada ?
Rufino da Camara. Maybethis record just doesn't mention him this time but what
is with the "seperada"?
This record doesn't mention him at all. Could they have been seperated? I don't
see any words that can mean dead or buried. I don't think I've heard of couples
being separated back then in the Azores. I'm sure it's possible but I have just
never come across it.

As a side note, of the 4 records for exposto children I believe Emilia and
Rufino took in, 3 of them have their names smudged or erased from the index
pages of these books. Was that done on purpose to protect them later on in
life? I know from my limited research into Azores genealogy that the "tag" of
Exposto or pai incognito usually followed a person with them into most other
records like passports, marriage, death. Why try to erase their status from the
indices of these books?

Any advice or suggestions anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I
don't think enough credit is given to many of the group members who help others
with translations or advice on many different topics. I know I for one wouldn't
get far in my research with out the help the members provide so thanks for that.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Marriage separation?

2016-01-23 Thread bsei2816
It says "filha natural de Emilia de Jesus" and the father is not named.
Natural, in this case, means not legitimate. It says she is married "mas
seperada há annos do sue marido" (but separated for years from her husband)
so the father is presumably someone other than her husband. Neither
Emilia's husband, nor the father of Emilia's baby are named.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2016-01-23 Thread Adair Borba
Hi All,

I would appreciate some advice on a strong project of which I need help.

My Mother and I have separate trees on Ancestry. It is time to combine the
trees, and I understand from Ancestry that this can be done by Family Tree
Maker. My Mother has it installed on her desktop, but I do not, and I do not
have the software.

This means the merge will have to take place on her computer, however the ideal
objective is to have the merged tree on my computer.

I feel we should hire an expert to facilitate the merge, thereby eliminating
the cost of maintaining the 2 trees.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Adair Borba

[AZORES-Genealogy] Jennie Solomon Silva Borba and sisters

2016-01-23 Thread Adair Borba
I understand that my Grandmother immigrated from Azores to Boston, MA with her
3 sisters in 1866.
This ship left the “sound” at New Bedford, MA/Providence, RI on a three year
trip following the gulf stream up around Greenland and Iceland down the west
coast of Europe, boiling blubber on the decks of the ship, landing at the
Portuguese Azores to refit their ships before the last leg of the journey home.
Jennie Solomon and her 3 sisters were old enough to leave without permission
and travelled to America. The men of military age made arrangements with the
whaler to smuggle them on board. The trip took one month to cross the Atlantic
and Ended back at the “sound”.

I am trying to identify Jennie’s sisters, is it futile to think there are any
ships records that would tell me their names?

thank you so much JR. I am also trying to find out who Jacinto was married

later went on to marry Escolastica.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Fregoso Mello to Hawaii

2016-01-23 Thread Shirley Allegre
If he was born in 1866, and went to Hawaii in about 1881, he would have been
about 15 years old.
I am looking at Bob de Mello's book that shows immigrants to Hawaii 1879-1883.
There are about ten pages of MELLOs.
Do you know of any siblings for Manuel Fragoso de Melo? I can look through the
pages and try to find him.
Have you looked at the 1890 Census in Hawaii? That might help.
Do you know where he lived in Hawaii? Or was born?

Hi! My maiden name is Mello - my grandfather's name was Manuel Fregoso
Mello. He was born on one of the Azorean islands in 1866! I believe he
emigrated to Hawaii in 1881 where he married Maria Medeiros abt 1888/9.
Records a little shaky. I understand the name Mello was so common in Hawaii
the family was using Fregoso as their surname while there for a timethat
could just be a family story..Most of the 16 kids were born in Hawaii, as
was my father, Ernest Mello in 1901!

Don't know how common Fragoso/Fregoso was in Azores..
