I'm researching my genealogy, and trying to find information about my
 great-grandfather, Alexander Souza.

We believe Alexander Souza was born on São Jorge in early 1883
(possibly late 1882?). He immigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area (don't
know the year), and lived in Sausalito, CA. He married Mary Catan Mancebo
on May 6, 1907, and they had my grandfather, Edward Souza, in 1909. Alex
died on March 13, 1915, in Sausalito. Mary died shortly after, and my
grandfather never knew any other details about his father. Other documents
show he may also have been known as Alexander Souza Borba or Alexander S
Borba ... is it accurate that the last name would be Paternal-Maternal, so
Souza as the father's paternal surname and Borba as the mother's paternal
 surname?

We don't know the town he is from, or any information about other
relatives. I looked through the parish baptism records here on the
 CulturaAcores site
 .

Unfortunately I didn't find any records that looked like they could be him.

Any advice for how to further research this would be great! I've been
in touch with the Star of the Sea parish in Sausalito, and the Portuguese
Hall in Sausalito, but so far, no luck.

 Thanks,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Luzia, daughter of Nicolau de Souza and Maria de Souza in Sao Miguel VFDC

2016-03-20 Thread bsei2816
Erica,

Looks to me like you did find it. I was probably too focused on finding
"Maria de Souza" so missed Maria de Bellem. I think JR is correct that the
marriage never took place because this looks like it says "sol.a (single?)
desposada com Nicolau de Souza. Desposada also means betrothed. Also, as
JR pointed out, it appears Nicolau was previously widowed by an Izabel.

Looking at all of this it seems curious that his later marriage shows him
as widower of Maria.

They never married because Maria Bellem, 24 years old, died while waiting

My request would be to let the person entering the data enter without the
help of the program. If they choose to just use first and middle name so be
it. Good luck trying to get a company to change. Once they gone down one
path they aren't likely to take a step up or go down another path.

Yes, ALL companies need to start taking more of a global perspective when
it comes to attracting genealogists from all over the world. Naming
patterns are not the same world wide. I'm not a member of My Heritage, but
maybe those of you who are should email them and ask for the option of "no
surname" assigned. Those of Mexican heritage would need First name, dad's
surname, mom's surname (I think) and it sounds like My Heritage doesn't
offer that either.

Thanks Bill. I do have the marriage for marriage for Nicolau and
Emmerencianna. I have not yet found the marriage for Nicolau and Maria.

I believe I have found Maria’s obit. Right page, bottom entry

I believe this is the marriage of (starts bottom left) Nicolau and
Emmerencianna on 4 Sep 1731, less than a year after Luzia's baptism (19 Dec
1730) in which Nicolau and Maria were said to be betrothed (I believe). I does
say he is the widower of Maria de Souza so it appears they did marry (right
page line 5).

Glancing through the obits and casamentos between these dates however I was
unable to find Maria's obit or her marriage to Nicolau,

After a lot of help from my wife (a native speaker), I came up with "com a qual

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with baptism - Sao Mateus, Santa Cruz, Graciosa

2016-03-20 Thread Lee
I have been trying to resolve the "mystery" of my cousin's ancestresses
maternal ancestry and may have finally found found something to help find
the family.

Dona Maria do Sacramento born about 1729 in Sao Mateus per her marriage
record to Antonio Lobam Botelho on October 30, 1752 in Luz was the daughter
of Joao de Conde and Dona Maria ??? - there is no "second" name given for
her mother - I've looked at the record several times to makes rue my eyes
are not playing tricks on me to no avail, it's simply not there.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-SC-LUZ-C-1741-1798/GRA-SC-LUZ-C-1741-1798_item1/P41.html

Late last night I started going through the Sao Matues baptism's and came
across the following record for Manoel:

Manoel filho of Joao de Conde da Sylva and Dona Maria (no second name given
whatsoever), born December ?? 1729.
Padrinhos given as Felipa filha of the family of Manuel Vaz Correa and
Lianer Vaz.

Am I reading this correctly - mother only given as Dona Maria? If so, I
think this is them, at least now I know more information on the father - da
Sylva - no just simply de Conde, that may help as well.

I think there a reason (of some sort) why there is no second name - a
mystery/challenge.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-SC-SAOMATEUS-B-1728-1738/GRA-SC-SAOMATEUS-B-1728-1738_item1/P34.html

Any help with any of the above would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
