[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: `1886 Rabo de Peixe baptism of Jose Taveres de Teves
It's ganhadeiro. It looks like a nickname to me, meaning one who is a "winner', or who is winning. It may have a specific meaning in its historical time that I am not aware of. *ga·nha·dei·ro* (*ganhar + -deiro*) *adjectivo e substantivo masculino* 1. Que ou quem aufere ganhos, lucros. 2. Que ou quem é agenciador. = AGENCIOSO 3. Que ou quem faz qualquer tipo de serviço. = GANHÃO 4. Que ou quem é interesseiro. Parecidas "ganhadeiro", in Dicionário Priberam da Língua Portuguesa [em linha], 2008-2013, https://www.priberam.pt/dlpo/ganhadeiro [consultado em 28-08-2016]. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Another Bretanha Baptism puzzle - Grandparents of Antonio de Medeiros 1852
I'm not very experienced-- JR has the the definitive word here. :) But, I'm very happy to have a look at your record, and this is what I can read about Alexandria: Alexandria, 29 yrs old, single, [---ada de servir = I guess, domestic service/duties], native and baptised in the parish of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuada, Bertanha, this council, living in this Matriz, legitimate daughter of Antonio de Medeiros, native of the [previously] referred to parish of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuada, and of Maria Jose, native of [the] City of Braganca [--?] Portugal If Alexandria was a native and resident of the parish, then it seems likely her mother--if still living-- would have resided in Bretanha for that long too. But the record doesn't say that. Do you have Alexandria's or Antonio's Baptisms? Or Antonio de Medeiro's + Maria Jose's Marriage? good luck! :) Linda On Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 8:40:15 PM UTC-7, Joanne wrote: > > That makes a little more sense, Linda, and looks closer to what looks like > Garcia on another granddaughter’s baptismal entry. Hi Joanne, Right side, Top entry I think it looks like Andre Gracia, which is a variant of Garcia, if I understand rightly. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Looking for Joao Machado!
St. Michael's is Sao Miguel. In the Azores. San Miguel island is one of the Channel Islands off the coast of California. Wrong ocean. Sao is Portuguese and San is Spanish. The Romanic arrived in Boston on Feb. 1, Mar 14, Apr. 25, June 6, Sep 7, Oct 16, and Nov 22, of 1911. It was part of the White Star Line. I don't know that it went to the Azores every single time though. The Passaportes (emigration OUT of the Azores) exist for 1911 and are online here: http://tombo.pt/en/d/acores 1911 is split between two books. You are going to have to go down the name column, stopping at every Joao Machado Silva or Joao Silva Machado that you see. Hopefully, you find the one with the wife Ludovina and child Maria. Once you find them, you'll want to look over to the right for the columns for Concelho & Freguesia. You'll probably want to do a Ctrl++ a few times to make those images larger. If you find them, copy the URL and post it to the list. State the line (passenger or passport number) and someone will give you the headings and a translation. Yeah, you'll get used to the name game. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Looking for Joao Machado!
Hi Cheri, Thank you. I am still digging out which part of the Azores he is from but it turns out the naming conventions making things even weirder. I am 99% sure I tracked him to the boat he came over on, which was the Romanic in 1911. His name on the boat was actually Joao M. Silva. He had his wife Ludovina Silva and their one year old baby, Maria, which was confirmed by family (though Ancestry's OCR translation of census mistakenly said she was 7 when the image clearly says 1). They were going to stay with his brother Manoel Jose Machado in Peabody, MA. All the ages (years anyway) match up. I also found (and verified by numbered street address in Peabody, MA) that his WW1 draft card said Joao Silva, Dec 1 1887 while his WW2 card said Joao Machado Dec 1 1887 with the same 2 Collins Street, Peabody address. I guess a lot of this has to do with flipping of names. I do have the island. It's St. Michaels. I'm guessing that's San Miguel? I will check out the Family Finder test. I haven't heard of that one, only NatGeo, Ancestry, and FamilyTreeDNA. Thank you again, Christian On Friday, August 26, 2016 at 7:44:08 PM UTC-5, Cheri Mello wrote: > > Christian, > > Do as many of the things in the How To link I provided as you can: > http://goo.gl/ToCPC0 > > Yes, it is like looking for a needle in the haystack. Yes, it says "Santos Velhos" but you got it...it should be recorded Santos-o-Velho. and do you know why? Simply because there are two (2) in Lisbon, named Santos: Santos-o-Velho (church) and Santos-o-Novo (monastery). Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Father's birth location in Lisbon
Rosemari and Cheri. There used to be the parish of Santos as well but in 2012 it was separated and absorbed by the parish of Estrela. The bairro/neighbourhood of Santos i.e. where the church was built is still there but no longer considered of "freguesia". Hope this helps clarify. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: My great grandfather Manuel Rose listed on 1910 census at Pierce street in East Providence, RI - Brick Wall
Jenna, I agree with Judy. Look at the city directories. My mother was told by her mother that her dad had died when she was a baby. In one of the city directories it stated that he had returned to Portugal. Through ship's records I found the village he came from and eventually found his daughter from another marriage (my mother's half sister). You got the short version but it ended well with sisters getting together and loving each other as well as a terrific relationship between my aunt and myself. Another piece of the puzzle was that I checked with the cemeteries in the area and one responded that they didn't have my grandfather but did have a sister of my mother's that had died at 1 year old who my mother new nothing about. That gave me some information that my grandfather was alive a lot longer that we were led to believe.Good luck - keep looking. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] My great grandfather Manuel Rose listed on 1910 census at Pierce street in East Providence, RI - Brick Wall
Jenna, If you are on Ancestry, look at the city directories. Many of them have dates of death. If you live in East Providence, go to the Weaver Library and ask to see the East Providence city directories. They have a large selection, again with dates of death. The RI state archives on Westminster Street, Providence should have death certificates for Manuel as well as birth/death records for his children.
