RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Patron Saints

2017-07-13 Thread doreencaetano
I was told by some very traditional old Catholics that the when a couple
married they too also declared a patron saint. I wonder if that is how we
became the Caetano do Canto from Saint Caetano, the patron saint of bread,
farmers, gamblers and the unemployed.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Hawaii marriage index online?

Pam,
What island are you talking about? I might be able to find other sources
if I know the island.

The Hawaii State Archives websites has the index for marriages that covers
all island, but I think it's only 1900-.

Then, they have Kauai, Hawaii, and I think Maui marriage
licenses/certificates which are searchable. They cover roughly the late
1890s onward, but are spotty.

FamilySearch.org also has marriage indexes for Hawaii. If I remember
correctly, these are from the marriage register books.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Patron Saints

2017-07-13 Thread Mary Bordi
My great grandmother was Maria. Her religious name, which she still signed
occasionally after coming to the US and marrying, was Maria das Neves. She
was from Norte Grande, Sao Jorge where the parish church is Nossa Senhora
das Neves.

I actually found a medal of "Our Lady of the Snows" on eBay.

Thanks for the replies. I'm wondering which "St. John" that Sao Joao da
Caldeira is? I cannot find anything about this saint. Is he the same as St.
John the Baptist, or Saint John of God?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Hawaii marriage index online?

2017-07-13 Thread Aaron Pereira
Pam,

You may be thinking of Ulukau.org
Its an online index of mostly marriage records of Hawaii, but there are
some probate, divorce, and naturalization records as well.

http://ulukau.org/algene/cgi-bin/algene?l=en

Hawaii Archives has digital copies available online for all the islands
except Oahu...click vital statistics tab from this link to search the
records
https://digitalcollections.hawaii.gov/greenstone3/library
