[AZORES-Genealogy] *****Sao Jorge Marriage Index online

2017-08-15 Thread Kathy Cardoza
it is my pleasure to announce a major, new addition to the Azores GenWeb …… the
Sao Jorge Marriage Index. This has been a long and difficult project undertaken
by a group of dedicated researchers and coordinated by Jeremy Berry-Cahn. This
index covers all 11 freguesias of Sao Jorge and is a searchable PDF. Every
effort has been made to insure accuracy. Please use any index as a starting
point only, and always verify with the original record. If you find this index
to be helpful, please express your appreciation to all the volunteers who gave
so much of their time and efforts to it.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Almada family; Sao Jorge; DNA testing

2017-08-15 Thread Mary Bordi
My fourth great grandmother married a Manuel Francisco Almada in 1803 in
Norte Grande. I also have Andrè de Sousa Almada (born in 1700s) as sixth
great grandfather (different line) whose father may have been Joao.

I have tested with Ancestry, FTDNA and 23andMe but more importantly my mom
(who is half Azorean and closer to the source) tested with FTDNA. We are
both on gedmatch.

Not sure if this is the same Almada family. I have ancestors going far back
in Norte Grande.

2017-08-15 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Tammy,
I'm thrilled to see your index on Kathy's site! It, hopefully, will help me
trace the children of my families through their children's marriages. I
know that you did it for your own use but it's great that you are willing
to share it with others. I know that we need to double check info because,
as we all know, we are human and we don't all see the records as clearly as
another may! I have to double check everything all of the time and
sometimes when I go back and look again, I wonder how I ever thought I had
it right! LOL Anyway, it's certainly a starting place.

Thank you for sharing your indices with us. Indices are invaluable, but they
are compiled by human beings who are not infallible. The indices do provide us
with "shortcuts", that is, based on the information provided we can quickly go
to the records and verify the accuracy of the information provided in the
index. For me they are an invaluable tool. Even Ernesto do Canto, the father of
Azorean index compilers, made transcription errors in dates, names, places or
origin, etc. Still, whenever possible I turn to him as a starting guide. You've
done us a great service. Thank you.

Chase W,

Download your raw data from AncestryDNA.
Make an FTDNA Autosomal Transfer account here:
https://www.familytreedna.com/autosomal-transfer
Upload your raw data from AncestryDNA.

If you want the tools and ethnicity estimate, it's $19. If you want to be
tested on FTDNA's platform, it's $59.

There are enough testers from Sao Jorge island now on FTDNA and many have
trees. So it may not be too hard to tell if you match someone with a nice
robust tree.

If you need more detailed directions, just email me directly at gfscherim

[AZORES-Genealogy] Almada family; Sao Jorge; DNA testing

2017-08-15 Thread CW
Hello,

I have long suspected that my ancestor, Antonio de Almada (b. abt. 1800),
who came to the United States in 1836 via the whaling industry and settled
in New York, originated from Sao Jorge. But for a long time, my suspicion
was mostly due to the fact that most people with the Almada surname seem to
come from the area centered around Norte Grande. Recently, however, I
stumbled on another clue that provides even more concrete evidence that
that is in fact where Antonio came from.

Several years ago I had my DNA tested on Ancestry.com. It wasn't until a
couple weeks ago while searching through my DNA matches I found a distant
cousin who claimed to be descended from a Joao de Sousa de Almada from Sao
Jorge. While I am not descended from this particular person myself, when I
trace his genealogy back a couple generations in the parish records, I come
to the family of Manoel de Souza de Almada and his wife, Anna. They had a
son named Antonio that was born around the right time that my ancestor
would have been. And if this Antonio is indeed my ancestor, that would
explain my genetic connection to the person on Ancestry.com who said he was
descended from Joao de Sousa de Almada - and more importantly, I would
confirm the date and place of my ancestor's birth.

But of course, there is also a chance that our link is through a different
ancestor altogether. So the way to prove it would be to find another known
descendant of the Almada family from Norte Grande and see if we're also
connected. I notice DNA testing seems to be a major topic for discussion in
this group - is there anyone out there who is also descended from this
family?

Appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] ***** New Indexes added to Azores GenWeb

2017-08-15 Thread Margaret Vicente
Kathy and Rosemarie,

I don't think there is any need to go on the defensive and I'm not here to make
suggestions on anyone's work. It was a mere heads up.

Cheers.

I looked at the first and 2nd marriage record for Maia and the surname of
the bride is incorrect. The brinde on the first record is Francisca da
Ponte and the groom on the 2nd record is Manuel Pacheco, not Coelho. same
 for the Groom's father.

Sorry but I thought you might like to know, since it's your webpage.

No, in a perfect world, tools such as these indexes would be perfect with
no inaccurate information no stumbling blocks, as you say. I have no
real control over the accuracy of any material that is submitted to me.
That includes previously published work and websitesI don't know the skill
and abilities of the person doing the work. All I do know is that someone
did the work and is willing to share it with others, like you. to be
helpful. I have every reason to think that these submissions will be
helpful to most people.

Perhaps you should make your suggestions to the person who did the work?

I honestly don’t know the answer to your question. The indexes were submitted
to me and they were put on the Azores GenWeb as a TOOL to help researchers. I
would use them as just that, a tool or aid to finding your ancestors. If there
are errors, I’m sorry there are. But, honestly, most indexes, many online, have

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Grandmother's Nursery Rhyme

2017-08-15 Thread Sonia Pacheco
Kathlene,

I strongly encourage you to have a fluent (non-heritage learner) speaker and
reader check your list of phrases for accuracy in spelling and context unless
your intention is to document how your family adapted and modified the language
within their own circumstances. If your intention is indeed to provide the
"family" version of things, I would make that explicitly clear in the booklet
you produce by stating which part of the country the family was from (this
accounts for some accent/phonetic variations), when they emigrated (this
accounts for the context of words/phrases), and where they settled (this
accounts for regional "Portu-ingles" variants that are known to exist).

In the 8 years I have been in this job, I've lost count of the times I have
seen individuals use the wrong spelling and context of words/phrases thinking
that what was said in their family was the "correct" way and then propagating
that to their children/grandchildren, who are then sharply disappointed and
embarrassed when they say find out they've been saying the wrong thing.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Grandmother's Nursery Rhyme

Hi all,

I hope this is not the wrong place to ask about this subject but I am doing a
project for my nieces. I would like to give them a booklet for Christmas,
listing all the Portuguese phrases I learned over the years from my father and
aunts. I am the last person exposed to this history and do not want it to get
lost.

There was a nursery rhyme my family sang to babies. It started with "Bom
Bom,Gahlina, Bom bom. Sounded like Boom. I know that means "Good Chicken". As
the rhyme is sung, the baby's palm is tapped. No one outside of my family has
ever heard of this but my family has always played this with baby's.
My Grandfather was from Sao Miguel and my Grandmother Faial. Thanks so much and
let me know if this is not an appropriate forum to ask this question.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] ***** New Indexes added to Azores GenWeb

2017-08-15 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi Kathy,

Thank you for the links. I can imagine how much work was put into this but
sorry for asking, were these indexes edited by someone who could proof for
errors?

I looked at the first and 2nd marriage record for Maia and the surname of
the bride is incorrect. The brinde on the first record is Francisca da
Ponte and the groom on the 2nd record is Manuel Pacheco, not Coelho. same
for the Groom's father.

Sorry but I thought you might like to know, since it's your webpage.

Take care,
Margaret

Bob,

I think you're referring to the margin notes as Index. What you are
looking at are "notes made on the margin of the respective record for
events related to the individual".

Margin Note: Casou e mudou o nome Doc. sq. 1386 do paragr. 5 xxx? 18-9-68
(Got married and changed her name, document sq? 1386 paragraph 5 xxx?

The record main information is:

October 23rd 1908.

Bob, it's not Windows 10. It's the wording for the request. You posted a
link to a baptism and said you are not sure of the information "in the
index and the other information." You posted no index. You posted a
baptism. I don't know what you want for "other information." I and others
aren't going to guess and tell you the priest said the baby was baptized at
home just to have you come back and say "I wanted the godparents." So if
you can explain what you mean by "index" and "other information" someone
will help you. We just want to be sure. :) Thanks! Cheri

That is exactly what it means, lay an egg for the baby, then the baby's
