Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with the information on the margin.

2017-08-22 Thread Cheri Mello
The margin note is saying he died. I'm going to let someone else assist
because I'm up to my eyeballs in preparing for the Portuguese Genealogy
Conference next week in Salt Lake City.

Unfortunately, no records are kept of a woman's miscarriages. They could
have gone over to another village, or another island even. Or perhaps her
husband was away. Or maybe she miscarried and then he went away. But yeah,
8 years is a long time with no kids. Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with the information on the margin.

2017-08-22 Thread bobcamscpw via Azores Genealogy
HI everyone. I am looking for some help with the information on the margin on
the top right side for Joao Correa dos Reis. Born in 1850, it is the top right
# 21.I also have a curiosity question, my question is I have births for
this family from 1832 to 1842 which is the last year I was able to find one.
After that I am not able to find anything until this birth which is in 1850. I
am dealing with the island of Graciosa in the village of Santa Cruz. Is it
possible that they moved or could of moved? I know this may not be correct but
maybe there were out visiting others and had children in another village, or
could it be that she had miss-carriages? I ask as this is a large span of 8
years with no children.

My relatives on my father's side came from the Azores in the late 1800's.
They went to Hawaii and then moved to California. I have found some
information on where they came from, but not much more. For the Freitas side I
have Medeira listed, but the Oliveria's I only have the Azores Islands. The
Vierra's I just have listed Portugal. I Have had my DNA done by ancestry and
I had my MTDNA done by Family tree DNA, my mother's side is English. But I did
have my Ancestry transfered over to Family tree DNA in there family finder. I
can not believe how many realitives I have found on my father's side. Sadly,
only a few have contacted me. But I have also found a few on Ancestry also.
Seems that my great grandmother's brother had 17 children, and that seems to be
the family that I am finding. Just letting you know that I am here.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Microfilms discontinued

2017-08-22 Thread Marilyn Thompson
Just need to add to the clarification. I just chatted with an agent at
Family Search.

I wanted to share the information I received:

When FamilySearch acquires a collection to put online, the record owner of
the collection, such as a government agency, specifies the restriction
setting on the collection. There are some records that can only be viewed
at a Family History Center regardless of LDS or Non-Member account status.

My question to the FamilySearch Agent: So the government restricted the
online to members only?

Agents answer: yes, they only gave permission to the LDS Church to view
online, which extends to LDS membership. However, by contract, our
non-member patrons may view the same images online at a computer at a
Family History Center. Our goal is to provide free access to records to as
many as possible and still abide by the contracts set forth by records
holders. We realize it isn't a perfect system, but it gives millions access
to free records rather than the expense of traveling to the Family History
Library or other repositories

So it is the Azores Government that has put the restriction in place.

I believe some of my grandfather's family was from there.

It would be good if you put a legend at the top for abbreviations. If a
Portuguese speaker ran some of that through a translator, they'd get "MIL"
is "THOUSAND." And those new to genealogy have no idea what some of that

Yes I would like to have access to that victims list. I have ancestors from

Indeed...

Just to clarify:

1. Microfilms will no longer be orderable on a FHC - last day is August 31st (9
days from now). Presumably, they won't throw them away, at least maybe until
the reader breaks down.

2. Current access on the Internet will not change. It will remain exactly as it
is either via CCA or tombo.pt.

What we're talking here is only that in some books in CCA, the quality is so
low that to read the smudges you need to see the microfilm. Maybe they will
eventually upgrade those books to a higher resolution in CCA. We can certainly
ask them.

However, if you're a Mormon, there's another way to view the microfilms online.
Take for instance the Vila Franca do Campo microfilms:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/382500 . If you scroll down and
click on the 'camera' icon, you'll be able to see them online at the full
resolution. And to clarify. It's not just a FamilySearch account - it's an LDS
church member FamilySearch account - those have higher privileges inside the
system allowing them to do temple ordinances. There's no way to get an account
of this type without becoming a Mormon. If you have a FamilySearch account, or
you're a FamilySearch indexer, you still are locked out of most Portuguese
images.

I was lucky and found it in a library not too far from where I live
(California). So I want to get as much info as I can out of it while I have it
checked out. I found it online starting around $120 but wanted to see the book
before deciding to spend the money; I did that (bought sight unseen) with
another book that I thought would be a gold mine of information about
Portuguese immigrants and it turned out to be of little value to me. Thank you
so much for recommending the book, responding to my query, and ALL the
assistance you provide via this group.

Hi Lisa,

Yes that is the section. I have found it very useful over the years. The other
section I use quite frequently starts on page 465 in my copy and lists the
churches and Freguesia they are in.

Just curious did you by the copy and where did you get it and how much. It is
very hard to find and the last time I saw one listed it was around $300.

Rick,

I was able to get a copy of the book you reference, Azores Islands A History,
and I'm wondering if the "standardized last name spellings" that you refer to
is the list of names covering about 70 pages that is in a table format giving
the Family Name, Name Derivation, Family Origin, and Family Armorial
information. That is the only lengthy list of names I see that refers to
families/general population.

Thank you,

Lisa Vierra Turrentine

(and as you can see my family does not use the standardized spelling ;) )

There is a list of first names that are the approved names and modern spellings

rather than Ana. I also make a note on how the name was spelled in the record.

G'day folks,

Recently there has been discussion on using modern Portuguese whenever using
family tree databases. I fully support such a standardisation but what is the
definitive reference source document? As a non speaking Aorean descendant how
do I determine what's modern?

Examples to You use de Sousa or de Souza, Anna or Ana, I have multiple official
documents where even in same document names have been spelt differently.

Suggestions?.

 Hi Rcik,

Yes, we're talking about the Church records, that you see on CCA (
tombo.pt is just a faster gateway to the same content). The quality of
the CCA records is the problem. In the later years, they uploaded higher
quality images, but the initial online books have really low quality
 versions.

If FamilySearch allowed you to see them (if covered under the same
agreement as mainland Portugal, only LDS church members are allowed to see
them in FamilySearch), you'd see that they provide a much higher quality
image than CCA ever has. And yes, I do know that they all come from the
same source. It's just that FamilySearch gives you the scan in it's
 original max scan resolution, and
