Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Furnas, Sao Miguel-Unusual marriage record

2018-02-26 Thread Maria Sousa
I have a similar one too. My great-great grandfather was married at the
age of 80 something, after having lived in sin with my great-great
grandmother. The priest wrote it like it was a marriage, on his deathbed,
but also a confession, because of the scandal he must have caused. Quite
interesting.

I see Margaret already found the name. It turns out my wife has heard of
the name, Cisaltina. Also the diminutive "Cezina" I mentioned earlier,
should be Cãozina, which is a diminutive for Conceicao.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with name and location

2018-02-26 Thread Margaret Vicente
Richard,

Cisaltina is the current spelling. The letter "C" is soft sounded and the
letter "S" is sounded off as in the letter "Z", (Seezaltina), and yes it is
a common name.

Ramalho is in the parish of Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada. However, there is no
one by this name born there in 1891, 1892 and 1893.

Your message is unclear to me, you mentioned her real name was Cisaltina de
Almeida. What other name did she use? Where exactly was the newspaper
clipping from?

The mother's name would be "Josefina"
Midle name de Nostremente, probably a "Christian" invocation name
misapplied. If I were to guess, probably Josefina do Nascimento do Couto.

What was her father's name?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Furnas, Sao Miguel-Unusual marriage record

2018-02-26 Thread Joseph Mendonca
I came across this unusual marriage record in Furnas- Left page No. 7.

Apparently, the couple were publicly "living in sin" and the groom was in
imminent danger of dying, so they summoned the priest and informed him of
their desire to reconcile with the Catholic Church and be married.

They asked for public forgiveness for all their scandalous behavior after
which they were administered the sacrament of confession, communion, and
then married. I didn’t see it, but I wonder if he was given his last rites
also.

The 4th line from the top on the right page states something about not

Ramalho is a place between Relva and Ponta Delgada, where the airport was
built on Sao Miguel Island. I believe it is considered part of Relva. The
name Sizaltina is not familiar to me. However I know of Cezina. The middle
name is also unfamiliar, perhaps they meant Nascimento.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with name and location

2018-02-26 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi All,

I am helping someone getting started researching their family in Sao Miguel
and in need of some ideas on a name and location.

I found a newspaper clipping stating that her real name was Sizaltina
Almeida

Does the Name Sizaltina make sense? It could be phonetic.

was born in Remalho, Azores Islands, Portugal August 22, 1892

This would be on Sao Miguel. Her Family Finder DNA test indicated her
ancestors came from there.

I'm reading this correctly as her mother, was Josephina Nostremente Couto

That middle name does not make sense to me.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help translating marriage record

2018-02-26 Thread Cheri Mello
Nina,

The priest wrote the word "parish" or "church" twice. (I have a hard time
going back and forth with embedded attachments. Many on the list cannot
read a Word Doc. You need to save in PDF for all to read).

The word is not "obitos." It's something else. You've got the gist of the
highlighted passage. They are not related and no dispensation was needed.

Your 3 ??? : The groom was an "exposto" given (dado) to Martinha Rosa. So
basically he was a baby that was given up with no parents (foundling).

Witness: Antonio Cymbron Borges de Souza, married (cazado/casado).

You translated the rest right. I don't translate the bottom. There's no
genealogy in it. You've got the gist of it.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help Please -

2018-02-26 Thread Jacki Gentry
Sam,

Thank you very much, I look forward to being able to look into this. My
work schedule just ramped up to 60+ hours a week again so it doesn't leave
much time to research but as soon as it slows back down, I plan to follow
up on this.

All the best
Jacki
