Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Golden State Killer Caught with DNA

2018-04-27 Thread Ms AVA
This has been a 24 7 news story here in Auburn, and the communities are
happy he is now behind bars. The Capture using DNA and GEDMatch to locate
a living relative, who da thought -
GEDMatch is a PUBLIC sight, so NO DNA Company compromised the "privacy" of
their testers. I do wonder now, if any of the GEDMatch members will stay,
or pull their Kits, and if it will make others think twice before loading
their data. The Kits I manage will stay on, their owners would be doing
their Happy Dance to know that their DNA was being used to get the Bad Guys
off the streets. I do hope that for the sake of the match, that his or her
"privacy" be kept our of the news.

And Susan - my Father gave me his baseball bat to keep with me...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Has anyone seen a passport issued in the name of the father of the kid (12 years old)?

2018-04-27 Thread Joana Ázara
My great grandfather, whose baptism certificate some people here helped to
translate (thanks so much!!), was born in 1845 and moved to Brazil in 1858
(jan, 2nd at the Novo Rival ship). By this time he was 12 years old. The
story according to some of my family members is that the 12 year old boy
came alone to Brazil. The passport shows the age of 12 but it was issue
with his father's name (Antonio Martins d'Azara). Has anyone seen this
happening before? I am wondering if that used to happen if the person was
under 18...

This is the link for his passport:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-TER-1857-1863/PASSAPORTES-TER-1857-1863_item1/P16.html

We still have the original passport in hands and it shows exactly the same
info as the one in this book at the link.

I read this article this morning and found it most interesting on the capture
of the Golden State Killer. This was a Cold Case file that was solved with DNA.

The article raises many concerns about privacy and how law enforcement used GED
Match to solve this case.  For years law enforcement has used finger prints to
identify persons and we have accepted this as no invasion of our privacy. If
you consider that DNA is just another finger print then I have no problem with
it being used by law enforcement.

I am happy they caught this person and he will be brought to justice.

The article also tells how DNA was used to identify a Jane Doe that was
murdered in 1981.

On the top right under Login you can search by name and it will bring you

I will second that Kathy and Rick! We called him the East Area Rapist and he
struck in my neighborhood! He is the reason that we installed a burglar alarm
and why my husband put a baseball bat under our bed that is still there today
41 years later! My youngest daughter was born 41 years ago today and that was
the week he announced that he would kill his next victim! We slept with all of
our children in our bedroom. I knew one victim personally and knew who three
others were! I say any means they could use to capture this man bravo! He
honestly took a lot of innocence with him including the carefree days of our
children playing outside. Sorry for the off topic rant but anyone who commits
crimes like these deserves to be caught by DNA or any other means.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Golden State Killer Caught with DNA

2018-04-27 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I read this article this morning and found it most interesting on the
capture of the Golden State Killer. This was a Cold Case file that was
solved with DNA.

The article raises many concerns about privacy and how law enforcement used
GED Match to solve this case. For years law enforcement has used finger
prints to identify persons and we have accepted this as no invasion of our
privacy. If you consider that DNA is just another finger print then I have
no problem with it being used by law enforcement.

I am happy they caught this person and he will be brought to justice.

The article also tells how DNA was used to identify a Jane Doe that was
murdered in 1981.

You can read the article here.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] **NEW Sao Jorge Marriage records

2018-04-27 Thread ROBIN WILLIAMS LEBO
This is great. Thank you for doing all this work.
I’m just wondering why my great grandmothers name is her married name and not
using the maiden name. Is there any way to change it?
