Pedra means stone. -eiro is someone who works the word that it is attached
to. So pedreiro is a stone worker, but in English, we say stonemason.

Take a post-it note and put it on your computer with the word(s). You'll
learn a lot that way.

Maybe your leg will be better next time when we go to Salt Lake. We'll be
missing you :(

Could someone please help me with the side note?  I can sort of make out dates 
and I know that the 2nd note is about a death but; is it Serafina or Manoel who 
died and what is the first note about please.  If you could do a literal 
translation, I might be able to remember and not bother everyone next time. 

Dan, there is a cemetery for Nordeste but if you are looking for someone in 
particular, you should check their obituary record to make sure they were not 
buried in the “Fazenda” of São Jorge. In many,  many cases you will find that 
people from the islands were buried in a communal plot. This was done for 
practical and financial reasons as the island simply could not keep expanding  
to create additional cemetery plots and also because the majority of 
parishioners could not afford a cemetery plot.

Hi Lillian,

You can check out hotels, residentials, casa de hospitalidade, Air BnB, or
even hostels. I'd pick one of those and go out to my browser and type that
in along with "vila franca do campo" or "ponta garca." You'd be better off
staying in Vila Franca, as there's more to do there.

As for the food, I try most things. So I just look at the menu (many are
posted outside, some you have to ask for) and if you see something that
sounds good to you, then give it a try. Regarding the seafood thoughIn
America, if you order fish or shrimp, they would have the head removed.
This does not happen there. You are served the whole thing. If you find
salad, the only options for dressing are oil and vinegar. Just so you know.

Hi Dan,

If your Deolinda Mello was of any prominence, you might find something
about her life in Portuguese newspapers that are at the archives. If she
was a common woman who was a mom and housewife, you're only going to find
the baptism, marriage, and death records on her.

Again, unless someone in her family has been paying on her grave for the
last 104 years, she's not there. Her bones are in the ossuary.

Hi Dan L,

Since the Azores are islands, land is pretty important. Generally, when a
person dies, they are buried for 7 years. After that, their bones are dug
up and placed in an ossuary. If the family wants the deceased there longer
than 7 years, they may pay to have the person to stay there. It's like
rent, the family would pay every month. If your wife's family has been
paying on the graves, you will be in luck and may find something.
Otherwise, there is nothing there.
