Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Pico Index - Joao Vieira - Sao Roque

2019-03-06 Thread Fawn Silva
Bill, thank you for catching my error and for taking the time to look for
the correct record. I think you're right abt the indexer trying to clarify
which Joao this was. They had obviously run into this couple elsewhere in
their indexing of this village.

Thanks, Cheri for checking out Roccio as a surname. I had never run into
it before either. Glad I know now what it means!

Gustavo, I'm glad that Cheri pointed you to the indexes. They are a
wonderful help. Good luck!

And Margaret, thank you for your info. I now have a new word for my
personal Portuguese Language collection! So do we think then maybe that
Joao lived near the town square???

Thank you, everyone. I really appreciate your time & input.

Sorry I was so slow in responding. Got caught up with issues here at home

[AZORES-Genealogy] 1674 Rodrigues Obito - Flamengos. Faial

2016-05-22 Thread Fawn Silva
Hello Everyone,

I am looking for an obito for Maria, the illegitimate child of Agada
Rodrigues, who was born in 1670. Agada had another Maria who was born
in 1680 so I believe this first Maria had died. I remember Joao Ventura
saying in a seminar that during this time period the deaths of children
under the age of 7 were not recorded but I did find this obito.

After Maria Rodrigues it says what looks like nenna. Can't find a
translation for that. Does anyone know what that means or if I am reading
it wrong?? Could this have been a child?

Thank you for any ideas you have to offer!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help w/baptism from Pedro Miguel, Horta, Faial

2015-02-01 Thread Fawn Silva
Thank you for your help, Margaret. The passport was from 1873 and says he
was 21. I thought maybe this was the husband of a grgr aunt but I didn't
know which vlg he was from on Faial. I found this passport record then
the baptism the name of the mother was correct, according to our Jose's
marriage record in CA, but the father is supposed to be Dominico Silveira
Furtado. I have found family whose first names are different on different
records so I thought maybe that might be the case.

The fact that this Jose died in the Azores means that he is probably not
the one I want. I am going to keep this info, tho, just in case.

I can usually get most of the records but those margin notes really confuse
me!! Thanks so much for helping.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Rosais, Sao Jorge Baptism

2014-05-01 Thread Fawn Silva
Hello Nancy Jean,

Thank you for thinking of my father. He is doing some better I will be
going home to St Louis on Friday.

Dennis Silva is my husband Buzzie Mendonca is his mother's brother.
Dennis' mother passed away so we asked Uncle Buzzie to do a DNA test for us
and he kindly accepted.

Just wondering if you are Portuguese thru your mother your father. If
you are Azorean on both sides of your family, like my husband is, the DNA
matches you mention might be closer for you because you are related closer
on the family side that your uncle is not related to. Am I making sense??
You might be related to my husband on both sides of his family, his
mother's side (Buzzie) and his father's side (Dennis' DNA) but the DNA
match will give you the closest one, in this case 4th remote. I think that
could explain this.

Cheri, is that right???

Rosemarie, how fun to be connected to you! You worked with my cousin,
Noreene, and you are a cousin to my husband!!

Our Silva's were also Silveira are from Calheta then Ribeira Seca
then it goes to Topo. Have no Lemos in the family tree but have Silveira,
Soares Sigueira, Bettencourt Avila, Alveres Silveira others from Rosais.
Also family from Pico Faial Terceira but the majority are from Sao
Jorge Pico.

Would love to find out how we all connect!!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Witnesses @ marriages

2013-10-28 Thread Fawn Silva
Thank you for your help. So the witnesses to the ceremony were not
necessarily family members.

I'm not wonderful at translating but I'm not seeing where it says the
mother is from Velas. After the paternal grandparents names doesn't it say
native of Sao Jorge but no village? I'm wondering if that refers to Jorge
Jose, the groom. I'm not seeing Velas in that part.

Thanks again,

Actually, the entire congregation present at the event are witnesses to

As for literacy, few commoners may have the opportunity to have an
education, but, generally all priests, and upper class members of society
were literate. The record states that this marriage ceremony was celebrated
in Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, in the district of Se, Concelho of Angra,on
the island of Terceira. The record mentions, Velas, Sao Jorge, as
birthplace of the mother, so it is likely that is the place referred to.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Witnesses @ marriages

2013-10-27 Thread Fawn Silva
Hi Everyone,

I have a question on witnesses @ marriages. Were they family members, like
godparents @ baptisms?

This is my husband's 3rd grgrandparent's 1822 marriage record and from what
I can translate the witnesses are:

Ignacio Soares de Albergaria Souza Capitão-mor in the village of Velas
Joao Antonio Cordeiro, single, native of corte of Lisbon

And they both signed the document. Wasn't that unusual for people to be
able to write then? What Velas are they referring to? Velas, Sao
Jorge???

Here is the link to the marriage record on the CCA site:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-SE-C-1814-1828/TER-AH-SE-C-1814-1828_item1/P106.html

I know the groom's parents are from Sao Jorge but that is all the info I
have.

Any ideas anyone may have on this marriage would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Fawn Silva

According to the Azorean government archive catalog (

books for Feteira prior to 1720. From these two facts, I'd deduce that they
did marry in Feteira before 1720, but the books are no longer in existence.
You'll have to resort to indirect sources for further research, such as
 priest processes or similar.

Note that Vale Levante, means eastern valley, so it doesn't have to be a

Also, I'm not sure this is the same Vicencia Rosa.. It clearly says that
the Vicencia in the marriage record was born and baptized in Sta. Luzia. In

Note that it's not that uncommon for women to have morphing names.. Try to
research her mother's family comes from some 'Francisco' family. Also, it's
quite possible she lied about having been abandoned. It's also possible she
 didn't know.

Did they adopt her and so she became legitimate? Was Maria Francisca a

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help w/ Madalena, Pico baptism

2013-06-30 Thread Fawn Silva
Hello Group,

I have not posted for quite a while but need some help with a baptism I
just found. This is for Vincencia Roza, who was left on a doorstep @ birth
at the home of Joseph de Rosa and his wife __ Maria and was baptized in
Madalena, Pico.

I can't read all of it but what I got out of it was:

Vicenta, daughter of unknown parents September 5, 1785, was laid at the
door of Joseph da Rosa and his wife _ Maria, residents of _
natives of this parish __Madelena, Pico, and was baptized on the
6thday of the same month, godfather was grandson, Joseph Ignatio_
Fayal

But in her Sept 1811 Santa Luzia, Pico, marriage record Vincentia is listed
as the legitimate daughter of Joze Roza and Maria Francisca. Did they
adopt her and so she became legitimate? Was Maria Francisca a different
wife than the __ Maria in the baptism record?

Also, when you come across someone who has been adopted, do you then follow
the adopted family line? That sounds like what I would like to do since
they obviously became her parents.

I don't know how to attach these baptism marriage records but here are
the sites:

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you,
