Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name Change

2018-12-30 Thread Judy Thompson
It was Joao Brum Santos Macedo, which is the name shown as father on my
grandfather's birth record. The change was to Joao Brum. The Santos was
not used by his ancestors but was for at least 2 of his children. Now I'm
wondering if that note is on all his children's records. Always something
more to do!

I had Joao Ventura translate my grandfather's birth record for Lajes,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name Change

On my grandfather's birth record there is a margin note that states that
his father's name was changed "according to the sentence of the Court of
Lajes, Pico Island, on 4 December 1943."
Since his father died in 1921, any clue as to why they would have changed
his name 22 years later?

Hi Rosemarie,
This is a long shot but if you come across a baptism in 1922 for a female

born in 1901 so earlier years you have seem to be too early. Thx.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Faial and Pico Azores

2018-05-27 Thread Judy Thompson
There is what you might call a neighborhood in Lajes on Pico called
Almagreira. It is not a separate parish. A couple of other neighborhoods
in Lajes are Rua Nova and Rua do Meio. At least sometimes these
neighborhoods show up on birth records. Perhaps someone else knows the
Portuguese name for a neighborhood. So I'd look in Lajes records to see if
you can find them. I have relatives from all 3 of these neighborhoods and
3 of my grandparents also died in Kings County.

We all refer to places like Lajes on Pico in concelho of Lajes as a

are like suburbs or neighborhoods in Lajes or for Ribeira Seca in Calheta
on Sao Jorge, what do we call Portal or Entre Grutoes? Can't find my
English/Portuguese dictionary so looked on google translate and found the
following possibilities:

suburb = suburbio
village = aldeia
town or city = cidade
neighborhood = bairro

Also did not realize that freguesia is actually parish.

Hoping Portuguese speakers will have an answer.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Hawaiian Deaths/Burials

2017-12-03 Thread Judy Thompson
After reading this response from Rick, given that Pico is in the Atlantic
and Hawaii in the Pacific, and since I know that my ggf sailed into and
out of Boston, I think they probably were either going to or from Boston
when he became ill. Also, when people died at sea, didn't they bury them
at sea? If so, that would mean that he died after reaching Hawaii,
assuming all the info is right and he is buried there. Still not sure what
type of ship as one relative said he was captain of a passenger ship but
most said whaling. I assume that is whale oil and other products. Need
to do more research on the routes they followed.

Thx Rick for the clarification. Lots more to do. And thx to everyone for
their help. I now have more leads to follow.

2017-12-01 Thread Judy Thompson
Hi Shirley,

Thx for your offer. Let me clarify the circumstances further. He was not
a passenger and did not live in Hawaii. According to relatives here and in
Azores he was captain of the ship and was either going to or from Azores
when he became ill and either died on board or after they docked in Hawaii
and was then buried in Hawaii. Further complicating research is there is
another person, a relative, with exactly the same name and also a ship's
captain.

Here are the details: Manuel Pereira Domingos, born 1 June 1843 in Ribeiro
do Meio and lived in freguesia of Lajes on Pico. Assumption is that ship
was a whaler but not confirmed. All agree he is known to have sailed in
and out of Boston regularly. Have narrowed down his death to between 1903
and 1923. The other Manuel Pereira Domingos was born in Lajes on 3 Dec
1867 and immigrated to Massachusetts and also died there.

If you can help that would be great but I understand if you can't. I'm not
sure it's doable but thx again for offering. I'm still trying to find the
consulate lists on family search.

Unfortunately have had no luck finding name of ship so far but thx for the
info. If I find it I will know where to look. Also thx for the info on
stowaways. My cousin's grandfather was a stowaway so I'll pass that on to
her. Judy

I have it narrowed down to between 1903 and 1923. Will need to order

cousin born in Azores in 1923 said he was no longer alive then. Thx for

Hawaii? Should I join the island group or ? My great grandfather is
supposedly buried there and either died on board ship then they pulled into
port in Hawaii and he was buried there or he became sick on board ship then
died in Hawaii after they pulled into port and was buried there.

I don't know of any relatives connected to San Miguel. If there are, it
must be far back or else descendents moved there. If you are related to
Francisco and Isabel, we are related with 2 links on Pico. If you did
Family Finder, see if I or my aunt, Alzira Rose, are matches. My mtdna is
an M number.and my aunt's is an
H number. All her ancestors, as far back as we have them, are from Pico. I
have 3 grandparents from Pico and 1 from Sao Jorge, where my mtdna is from.
Let me know if you find any matches for us..

The name is Bagaco. My grandfather gave that info to my Mother many years
ago and she wrote it down. Also there were over 10 people from Lajes with
that surname. I was told by someone before that it was an alcunha
(nickname). It may have started out that way but it stuck.

Here is what I have for Isabel and Francisco:

Isabel Conceicao Brum Jesus born 30 Nov 1836, married 8 Jan 1859, died 27
May 1913, all in Lajes.

Francisco Brum born 2 Nov 1830, died 11 June 1880, all in Lajes.

I don't show any additional marriages or children for Isabel after he died.

date. One is related to one of my paternal great grandmothers and one to
one of my maternal great grandmothers.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] FTDNA Matches with Multiple Links

2017-09-16 Thread Judy Thompson
I don't want to reload a new gedcom at this time as I still have lots
of additions to make to my tree so for now will use your other ideas to
keep track. I guess I can do the same for an mtdna match. Have one
confirmed link in 1600's. Thx for all your help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] FTDNA Matches with Multiple Links

2017-09-15 Thread Judy Thompson
I have a match showing as a 2nd-3rd cousin with 136 cms of dna. After
checking I found that the person is related to both my grandfathers on
both sides of their families and multiple times (something like 10
links!).    What I'm wondering is if their is any way to mark that entry
somehow as a distant cousin without having to do multiple links to tree,
so I won't have to remember that this one has already been checked out.
Or maybe just do one link to a distant relation and do note re others?
Any problems with doing that?

Thx for any help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Keeping track of degree of cousinship

2017-08-12 Thread Judy Thompson
Thx for the responses. I will be contacting you Cheri re situations
like the one below once I am sure all the links have been found.

I have one match that shows as 2nd-4th cousins with 74 cms in common and
we found 9! different links so far, closest is 6th cousin and I believe
more than one link is 6th cousin. I often find multiple links to my
matches. Most of the 9 links are from a set of my paternal great
grandparents who are married and also blood relatives but at least one
is to a maternal grandparent. On the other hand I have a confirmed 3rd
cousin x1 match that also has 74 cms in common, with seemingly only 1
link but a step relationship is also a cousin one so even that is
complicated. The match was easy as I knew her relatives. It seems to me
that amount of dna in common should count for something but not sure what.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Keeping track of degree of cousinship

2017-08-11 Thread Judy Thompson
Haven't used FTDNA much for a while but it used to have a field where
you could list the actual degree of cousinship for each match. That no
longer seems to be there anymore. Did they do away with it or is it
somewhere else?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Pai Incognito

2017-08-08 Thread Judy Thompson
I'm wondering what people are using in their family trees when the
father is pai incognito? Are you using just that? What if you have
more than one person with a pai incognito, do you use the same or code
them as 1, 2, etc., or ?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Old Portuguese Photos

2016-10-10 Thread Judy Thompson
I am going thru some old photos that were from my grandmother's house.
There are several of people I don't recognize. They appear to be either
from Azores or US in early 1900's. Is there a place online that people put
old Portuguese photos for other people to see if they recognize anyone? Or
any suggestions as to what to do with them? All the relatives that might
know who they are have already passed.

Thx.

If his grandparents were born in the Azores and you have their information
especially the one's from Pico I will look. I have always thought he was from
there I have seen him several times.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] HOW TO ASSIGN 4TH COUSIN 3 TIMES REMOVED

2013-03-19 Thread judy thompson
Hi Cheri,

I think I like the 4C2R and note it idea. That way if I see a 2R I’ll know it
might be farther out. I need to start using the notepad more as I hate having
to go back and find common ancestors that I already located, and now that I
have another account to keep track of it is getting really crazy. I have been
keeping track of which emails were initially sent so if they don’t respond, I
know that I did contact them and when.

Thx for all your tips. Wish I were as organized as you.

Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] HOW TO ASSIGN 4TH COUSIN 3 TIMES REMOVED

Hi Judy T,

I think it was 2 DNA conferences ago where the admins convinced IT that we
needed more that 1st cousin, 2nd cousin, 3rd cousin, etc. So they took 1st
through 4th cousins and added once removed and twice removed. They did not do
this for 5th or 6th. But we got something.

So, it's your choice if you want to pick 4C2R (4th cousin 2x removed) or just
4C and make a note of it on your notepad underneath the match's name that it's
really a 4C3R.

There is an option for 5th and 6th cousins. No options for removed. Beyond
6th cousins there's a Distant Cousin option that I use and on that little
notepad I write the kind of cousin and who our common ancestors are. I'm doing
the common ancestors on everybody. I'm starting to see some of the same
matches show up on different DNA accounts (someone matches my mom on her Logans
but is matching my dad on his Bedfords). The notepad helps keep me straight!
