Hi Bella,
Glad to see you on the list. Using Gedmatch we learned we are 7th cousins
through our Cedros & Capelo, Faial ancestors. It took a while comparing &
sharing our trees but it is so exciting to see each record that connects

 Speaking of miracles, I just
found my Machado Avila grandmother's first born child on Ancestry. For
over 12 years, I searched for this baby boy named Manuel, per my
mother. I still remember the large framed picture on the wall of this
baby surrounded with roses. I was told he had passed away before he was
a year old. My grandparents, Thomas Pereira Jorge de Escobar
Maria Conceicao Avila, were married in New Bedford in 1898. They
appeared on the 1900 RI census as Thomas Mary Perry. No children.
But today, thanks to Ancestry, I found Manuel P George b. June 7, 1899
in Fairhaven, MA. That's their first born. All the details match. Still
haven't been able to find a death record in MA or RI for baby Manuel.
Years ago I phoned all the town vital statistic offices in MA RI but
never found the birth death record of this child. No death
records appeared online either. Sometimes people we contact do the best
they can but don't search adequately enough... so persistence pays off.
This family of mine has used the surnames, George, Jorge, Perry, Perry
Jorge Pereira. As we all know, this is what makes our Portuguese
research so challenging.

 Ancestry is free till tomorrow
for their New England Collections.

and I lived with them. They also helped raise some other children as well.

His sister Rose also came to the US, not sure when. She lived near
New Port, RI and in her later years wintered in Florida where here
daughters and son live. Rose married a man named Woodson.

My uncle's other brother Antonio came to the US in the 60's as an

the US in the 50's with her husband, Antonio Souza and two sons and
they lived in California near us. His daughter Maria came when he
did and she never married. Antonio came first to the East and then
came to California.

Another brother, Joao was a half brother. My Uncle Joe sent for
Joao's two sons, Manuel and Frank during the time of the volcano in
the late 50's. Their sister Maria came to the US later with her
husband and two children and eventually Joao and his wife Maria also
came to the US and lived here in Ca near us.

I am very close to this family and am in contact with them
regularly. We consider ourselves related even though we are not
blood related. My Uncle Jose Furtado Dutra had two cousins, Jose
Garcia and Joao Da Rosa (later americanized to Rose). I have early
pictures of them together, but I am not sure if the pictures where
taken here or in the Azores. They may have even come to the US
together. There was also a Moitoso family that would visit us the
were related to my Uncle Joe. I don't remember the husband's name,

trying to find out more about her Faial ggrandfather's surnames and

Hi Jacki,
Thanks for that picture. It is great! I have so few pictures of my ancestors.

No, I didn't hire a researcher but several of us who had roots in the

it included many notes. This was before it was posted on Neps. On
Neps there is a note that also says Antonio's marriage record was not
found. What an interesting story you relayed to us.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help

2011-04-02 Thread Patricia Butcher

Hi Cousin Jacki,
According to my Cedros, Faial file you do have
the names correct Antonio Francisco de
Medeiros's birthdate is also correct. I do not
have the actual record but the Faial researcher
that did the village of Cedros, Faial also had a
note posted regarding Jose Francisco Alcaide
who was born in Vila da Madalena, Pico. The
alcunha, Alcaide translates as mayor.

Here is the google translation: a bit wild but good :)
NOTE: The name or nickname Mayor
appears on the birth registration
(Baptism) Salvador's grandson, son of father
Incognito and his daughter Inacia
Louise. Received all the divine
sacraments and was buried in the body of
church (sic) next to the grid in front of
Bom Jesus, in the Parish Church
Santa Barbara. The priest does not say whether the deceased
or had not followed up.
He died at age 65, more or
less, he says the priest.

Antonio Francisco de Medeiros is my 2nd cousin, 4x's removed

Hope this helps a bit.

Just wanted to share a hit with all of you.

My Mother got a letter with an early 1900's picture of a family with
11 children ( my Mother gave me the same picture years ago). The
letter was from a gentleman in Elk Grove, CA who received the letter
from a woman in TX doing family research on relatives who moved to
CA in the 1920's. This man, who also has done research on his
family with the same surname, knew this wasn't his family. He went
on to trace down my Mother and sent the letter and picture on to her
with a note I think this belongs to you. My Mother is now in her
80's and how he located her since her name has changed more than
twice is in itself a story of a dedicated good Samaritan researcher.

My Mother phoned Joyce (76), in TX. They shared stories and my
Mother told her how interested I am in genealogy, that I have been
trying to do research and that I had hit a wall and couldn't go any
further than my Grt. Grandfather. They all just disappeared.

As it turns out, my newfound cousin, Joyce, has been doing research
for the passed 30 some years. Her and another cousin would take one
or two week vacations and go back in history to where ever they
needed to go. They researched, and documented every town record,
bible, storyteller, library, school record, deeds, wills and
compiled a book beginning in 1702 forward. Our family was the
missing link to one of the 11 children in the picture. I was so
happy to send her all the info and docs that I have collected to
complete her work.

Even more. It seems that one of the 11 children's wife, didn't like
the her inlaws and when Grt. Grandma died, this she set fire and
was burning all the family pictures and china when the other family
members drove up to the old home after the funeral.

I sent Joyce what few family pictures I had. Joyce sent copies on
to her cousins (e-mail is so great). She wrote back and shared that
all the cousins haven't come down to earth yet as they are so
thrilled with pictures that they thought were lost forever. Four of
the pictures that I sent were of Joyce's Father that she had never seen before.

And yes, she is sending me a copy of her book: )

Thank you Judi Phillips for your post about the record search
pilot on www.familysearch.org Although I have used their PAF
program for 10 years, I haven't visited their site in quite some
time. I wasn't aware of all their new features information
available online. Your post prompted me to look once again for my
elusive great aunt, Maria Rosa Jorge. She has been my brick wall for
over 8 years. Although I have her Cedros, Faial birth record and
passport record from 1893, I could never find a trace of her in this
country. A distant cousin told me she had married young. Another aunt
told me she came to her brothers funeral in RI, in1950. No one seemed
to know much about her. She would have been 68yrs old then. Well, lo
behold, yesterday, while checking out that feature, family search pilot,

I found a 1900 Fairhaven, MA death record for Maria P George.
The parents are correct birth date is just a year off. She was only
19 yrs old when she died. (actually 18 according to her birth record)
This sounds like her. Waiting to hear back from the New Bedford
library for more details. I don't have Ancestry to check for more
details. Keeping my fingers crossed as I have done countless searches
for this one great aunt hoping to find new cousins, but because of
misinformation I was searching in the wrong time frame. Thanks again
Judi for that post :) :)

Thank you John, for trying to be helpful by
listing my ancestors from the Neps site. Maria
Rosa, listed on the site, daughter of Thomas
Pereira Jorge de Escobar Maria Clara do Coracao

married Jose Furtado Dutra. I provided this
information to the researcher it was entered
incorrectly on the Neps site. Maria b. 1882 is
actually Maria Rosa. I am searching for her
descendents in the US. Unfortunately, without her
married name this is difficult.
She immigrated in 1893 at 11yrs of age with her
17yr old sister Maria Adelaide. Her older sister
died in 1895 and by 1900, a census year, she may

[AZORES-Genealogy] Maria Rosa Jorge, Cedros, Faial

2010-07-18 Thread Patricia Butcher

To all my Azores friends,

Maria Rosa Jorge has been my brick wall for 8 years. I try to post
this on the list twice a year in hopes of a miracle. :)

My Great Aunt, Maria Rosa Jorge, daughter of
Thomas Pereira Jorge de Escobar Maria Clara do Coracao de Jesus
(also Maria Rosa on some records)
has been my brick wall for 8 years. I'm trying to locate her
descendants. All the above were from Cedros, Faial.

Maria Rosa Jorge was born 3-28-1882 in Cedros, Faial, Azores. She
immigrated in 1893 at 11yrs of age with sister, Maria Adelaide Jorge,
17yrs old, to RI. I have copies of this from the Passport book in
Horta. Her older sister, Maria Adelaide, married Jose Furtado Dutra,
also from Cedros, in Providence, RI. Maria Adelaide died less than
two years later in Jamestown, RI. Maria Rosa was only 13yrs old when
her sister died in 1895 in RI. No one in the family knows who she
lived with or had any contact with her for years. She was alive in
1950 at 68yrs of age. She surprisingly appeared at her brothers
funeral (Thomas Perry) in Jamestown, RI. I do not have her married
name but was told by a new found cousin on this list that she married
young. This family had lived in New Bedford, MA RI so I have been
searching both areas.

I have searched census records, family obituaries, a few cemeteries
ship lists for clues. Have not located her on any of these except for
the passenger list of the SS Vega ship that she her sister came
over on in 1893.

She could have used the name Perry. Maria Rosa Perry or Maria Jorge
(Maria Clara) or another variation. The double surnames are
challenging to work with. My goal is to find her U.S. marriage or
death record. I currently have her birth record and all other family
members birth, marriage death records. If anyone has any other
suggestions, I'd sure appreciate them. Thanks for reading this.

~Patricia~

P.S. grandparents of Maria Rosa Jorge are:
Antonio Pereira Jorge de Escobar Aurelia Rita Bernarda de Escobar
of Cedros, Faial.

Antonio Silveira Meirinho Maria Rosa of Cedros, Faial

Hi to all,
I have listed the following referring to the de Bem found
in my file for anyone who is interested.

Antonia de Bem married to Manuel Almeida both born in
Cedros, Faial are my 9th great grandparents.

Antonio Rodrigues de Bem born abt 1658 in Pedro Miguel,
Faial married Catarina Ornelas born in Graciosa both died in Cedros, Faial.
Their son Joao Rodrigues de Bem born abt 1679 in Graciosa, married my 1st
cousin 8 times removed, Maria da Rosa born in Cedros, Faial.

Catarina Dias de Bem born abt 1659 in Pedro Miguel, Faial,
married Domingos Goncalves o Velho born Jan 1631 in Cedros, Faial.
He is my 1st

cousin 9 times removed.

Joao Antonio de Bem born in Santo Antonio, Pico, married
Paula Santo Antonio born in Santo Antonio, Pico. Their son Joaquim
Antonio Brum

Silveira born abt 1756 in Santo Antonio, Pico married Mariana Bernarda
Bettencourt born Jul 21, 1745 in Castelo Branco, Faial. She is my 4th
cousin 5 times removed.

Pedro Rodrigues de Bem, son of Antonio Rodrigues de Bem and Catarina
Ornelas shown above,

also married a Catarina Ornelas and had a daughter who was Catarina Silveira
she married Amaro Pereira Lacerda born abt 1625. He is my 1st cousin
10 times removed.

These lines are still in process work as is all of my work,
but my assumption is that my de Bem families all came from Pico.

Hi Again Donna,
So glad you are looking for your ancestors. All of these names you
mentioned are people I knew on the island. (Jamestown, RI) I am
excited that you are doing the research. I told Jim Pemantell (this
is how Jim spells his name) that this list would be so helpful to him
if he ever wanted to research his Sao Miguel ancestors as there seems
to be more info here on Sao Miguel than any other island. How
wonderful that you have taken on the task! As far as I know I have no
connections to Sao Miguel but this list will certainly be able to
help you. They are a wonderful group of people and so willing to
share records and information.

ggrandfather's brother, Jose Furtado Dutra in 1893. Unfortunately,
Maria Adelaide died less than 2 years later in Jamestown, RI at
19yrs of age of typhoid fever. Your great uncle, Jose Furtado Dutra,
didn't marry again till 5-6 years later to another Maria. Their
descendants still live in Jamestown. We may have met in the past?

Your great grandfather, Francisco, did pass away in Cedros, Faial,
May 21, 1926. Unfortunately, in my file I only have one child listed
for your great grandparents, Francisco Furtado Dutra Maria Rosade (
Maria do Rosario Conceicao) and that is Antonio, born Nov 9, 1900. I
did not have your grandfather, Manuel's birthdate.

I will send more information to you.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Bedford, MA 1961 yearbook

2010-05-21 Thread Patricia Butcher

Hello Listers,
A new friend of mine, not Portuguese, graduated from New Bedford, Ma
High School in 1961. There were over 600 students more than half
were of Portuguese descent.
Yesterday, I had the time of my life looking through his yearbook at
all the faces names of the graduates. He couldn't understand why I
was so fascinated with his yearbookeven after I explained to him
my passion for my Portuguese genealogy research. Of course my Azores
google friends can relate to this! I'm sure that I looked upon a few
distant cousins that I haven't found the connection to yet as New
Bedford is where my Pico Faial grandparents were married lived
for several years.

If anyone on the list thinks they may have a connection or a clue
that could be found in this 1961 New Bedford high school yearbook,
please let me know. I would be happy to search through it for you.

Thanks for re-posting your information. Nothing rings a bell but I
will check with some of the Vieira family back in RI to see if they
have any additional info that I do not have.

My g g grandfather was Joseph Vieria (also known as William Joseph
Simmiss born approx 1848 in Portugal, profession = sailor, married
Susan Eliza Davy or Davey on Aug 22 1887 in Nelson, NZ

his father - my g g g grandfather, as mentioned - was Joseph Vieria,
a labourer, and his mother was Theresa??? Vieria, maiden name
Simmiss. I think that Joseph (g g g grandfather) died March 1886 as
on his sons marriage licence it shows his mother as a widower. I
assume that she then took her maiden name again as we are of
Simmiss, maybe Simas line.

Can anyone shed some light on any of this as I need help as to how
to move forward with my research

Does anyone have any clues or possible connections to the Manuel

the Kaishada name thinking perhaps it was casada from the

that is what his grandmother told him. However, I still feel it is an
error. Thanks...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Brick wall ancestors, Maria Rosa Jorge

2009-08-25 Thread Patricia Butcher

Maria Rosa Jorge is my brick wall. I try to post this on the list
twice a year in hopes of a miracle. :)

My Great Aunt, Maria Rosa Jorge, daughter of
Thomas Pereira Jorge de Escobar Maria Clara/Maria Rosa
has been my brick wall for 8 years. I'm trying to locate U.S.
descendants. All the above were from Cedros, Faial.

Maria Rosa Jorge was born 3-28-1882 in Cedros, Faial, Azores. She
immigrated in 1893 at 11yrs of age with sister, Maria Adelaide Jorge,
17yrs old, to RI. I have copies of this from the Passport book in
Horta. Her older sister, Maria Adelaide, married Jose Furtado Dutra,
also from Cedros, in Providence, RI in 1893. Maria Adelaide died less
than two years later in Jamestown, RI. Maria Rosa was
only 13yrs old when her sister died in 1895. No one in the family
knows who she lived with or had any contact with her for years. She
was alive in 1950 at 68yrs of age. She surprisingly appeared at her
brothers funeral in Jamestown, RI. I do not have her married name but
was told she married young. This family lived in New Bedford, MA RI
so I have been searching
both areas.

I have searched census records, obituaries, a few cemeteries ship
lists for clues. Have not located her on any of these except for the
passenger list of the SS Vega ship that she her sister came over on
in 1893. Have also searched several RI New Bedford area churches
for marriage records.

She could have used the name Perry. Maria Rosa Perry or Maria Jorge,
Maria Clara or another variation. The double surnames are
challenging to work with. My goal is to find her marriage or death
record. I currently have her Cedros, Faial birth record and all other
family members birth, marriage death records. If anyone has any
other suggestions, I'd sure appreciate them. Thanks for reading this.

Post about your brick wall ancestor even if you posted about them 6

on your calendar about posting about yours, because I see them every
so often. New things come out now with so much digitizing. I think
we mention the CCA site at least monthly because of new members and
because people who are stuck at a brick wall may not initially
realize that some sources are worth searching.

Some queries do fall flat on their initial request. It takes some
time to figure out how to write a query to a list (any list, not
just this one) and get a response. A query of Looking for Manuel
de Mello, someone help me will not get much of a response. Listing
your ancestors dates (birth, marriage, death or any timeline dates
that you have (e.g. he lived in New Bedford during the 1910s), who
he was married to, kids, and places you have found him is much more
helpful and is more likely to get people to answer you back.

Brick wall ancestors (and for many of us, it's the immigrant
ancestor) are hard to research. You'll have to try one suggestion
at a time. I mentioned in a previous post that it took me 4 years
and 25 documents for me to figure out my brick wall/immigrant
ancestor. I think that with all the stuff coming on the Internet
now, it would be more like 2 weeks to find him. Pretty amazing how
much this hobby has progressed since I started in 1992.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Some new-comer questions: Jorge line

2009-07-18 Thread Patricia Butcher
Hi Ben,
Or perhaps I should say hello cousin! Sebastio Jorge born in
Lomba, Flores is my 6th ggrandfather. I will send my Cedros line to
your email address so we can see how we connect.

John Vasconcelos, a great contributor to the list very
knowledgeable about the island of Flores gave this information
in a previous email that I saved:

Regarding Flores research: I think probably the most unfortunate
island for researchers, myself included

And he went on to list the villages the dates that records were
available as follows:

Caveira...Records for baptism begin 1834 and marriages 1833.
  Cedros...Baptisms begin 1799, marriages 1840
  Faja Grande...Baptisms 1861, marriages 1860
  Fajazinha...Baptisms and marriages begin 1702.
  LajedoBaptisms begin 1826, marriages 1860.
  Lajes...Baptisms begin 1757, marriages 1763.
  Lomba...Baptisms begin 1844, marriages 1860.
  Mosteiro...Baptisms and marriages begin 1851.
  Two of the best parishes
Ponta Delgada...Baptisms and marriages begin 1675.
  Santa Cruz...Baptisms begin 1681, marriages 1675.

John also stated that Lomba, Flores was one of the oldest original
parishes on the island many of their records were missing, lost or???

A big challenge for many of us with Lomba, Flores ancestors.

Hi Sam,
Thanks for asking...but I do not know her siblings names...just her
anglicized parents names. She died in childbirth in Providence with
her 3rd child in 1886. I personally knew Rosa Amelia Ernesto's
daughter, Amelia, b.12 Dec 1882 in Providence. She was only 3yrs old

Hi Judi,
How nice of you to reply. I knew someone would have the cemetery
details for me. I have all the marriage death info on Rosa Amelia
Silva that died in Providence in childbirth (3rd child) in 1886.
(from RI archives) She was married to Ernesto da Rosa Vieira from
Cedros, Faial. He then returned to Cedros remarried. Many of his
children returned to the US. I grew up with this family, distant
cousins, but we could never find Rosa Amelia's ancestry. (born Faial)
or her grave site. Her parents names were so shortened anglicized
in the records. Example:
Rosa Amelia, dau of Francis Isabella Thomas.

Rosa Amelia Ernesto da Rosa Vieira listed their daughter Amelia
born in 1882 as Amelia Silva. Perhaps this was from mother's maternal line?

Thanks again!!

Thanks so much Dee!!! I'm entering new data into

Cedros, Faial file states:

Ana Maria b. 8 August 1715, Cedros, Faial
The Ribeirinha, Faial site states she was born
same date but in Salao, Faial Her parents are
the same in both files but different birth locations.
Cedros, Faial file states:
Manuel Alvernas b. Pedro Miguel (no dates)
Maria de Mendonca b, Cedros, Faial ( no dates)

Cedros file has further ancestry Ribeirinha ends with Manuel
Alvernas Maria de Mendonca, no further
ancestors. Some of these are ancestors so I hope
someone has an answer. Thanks...

the other daughter (Marie) is still alive (88 years old) living in the
same area (Oakland). Through the internet managed to find a nephew
niece of the Patricia Pat. Contacted them have been communicating
with them for the last two weeks. Was told that Patricia Pat did not
have any children but Marie did have a daughter named Patricia aka/PJ.

This is the situation...PJ is apparently hesitant to share any info.
Her aunt (father's side) passed away in Sept so don't know if she
thinks I'm a relative coming out of the woodwork wanting something
from the estate or what. I've relayed to them that my only interest is
information and pictures. One response that was relayed to me was She
has requested that her mom not be contacted as she is now 88 and a bit
frail her initial thought was you have the wrong family. But, she
wants to check thoroughly and then she'll give you a call. No call
yet.

This morning I received another email from the niece updating me and
this is what she said I have found pictures of Paul and Pat, but I
want to hear back from Patricia first before I send anything your way,
I hope you will understand (PJ requested this of me). I did find that
Aunt Pat went by the name of Patricia Vera Perry. I hope that Patricia
(PJ) will get back to you soon. With that said along with other
information I have I am now 100% sure I have the right family.

Thankfully, I did get a picture of Patricia Pat before PJ put a stop
on getting anything else. Both nephew niece have been very nice and
seemly willing to help until they involved PJ. The niece was the
executor to Pat's estate and she said she has a box of Paul's things
which she has now looked through and does have information that I
need. What I am hoping for is some help in how to respond to the email
to get her PJ to share info pictures. My cousin and I have already
had the pleasure of being sworn yelled at by another relative (from
the first marriage) and told to never call again. I don't want to make
any mistakes with this family because they are our last hope as far as
pictures are concerned and of course breaking down the wall we've been
at for so long.

The niece is also working on their genealogy (part time) and has run
into a brick wall with Pat's side of the family. In two weeks I've
been able to go back 200+ years and find a lot of information that I'm
sure they would love to have. I also found a tree that Paul was
working on but I don't think the niece is aware of it. Regret his last
entry was in the mid 90's so anyone living at the time is hidden and I
can't gain access to it. Can I, should I use this as leverage with the
niece and if so what would be the best way to go about it if PJ
decides she doesn't want to share? Just simply letting her know I've
traced back that far might be enough??? Should I provide them with as
much information I have on the Vera/Perry family or just a little
or to make them feel more comfortable about sharing more? Any
suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sorry this was so long. I tried cutting it down as much as I could but
needed to explain the situation somewhat for a better understanding of
the situation.

Thank you,
Michelle

research leads to connections to your family. i.e. Jacinta jessy de Serpa.

My grandfather's sister Minnie married Joseph Elmer Serpa (November
1874 - 1938), they had a son Elmer - who was my dad's first cousin
and I remember visiting cousin Elmer and his sons in Willow Glen
area of san jose, CA. Minnie and Joe Serpa are buried in St. Mary's
Cemetery in Gilroy. My great grandmother Rosa Gomes da Conceicao
born in Cedros, Faial, lived with them after her husband died in
1913 and she died about 1934. Her brother was Joseph Gomes who
married Rosa da Conceicao (Garcia da Rosa) and they lived with their
large family near Hollister. You have them listed in the tree notes
somewhere as well.

In any case, it was a very small Azorean community in San Juan
bautista and Hollister in San Juan Bautista. I have not been able to
make a connection with the other da Rosa family from the area, but
if they came at the same time as my great grandfather Manuel
Francisco da Rosa, I am sure they must be cousins, etc. My aunt told
me he left Faial about 1864 on a whaling ship and returned to Faial
in 1975 to marry his sweetheart in the village. I believe they came
from Cascalho, Cedros in Faial. My research at the Archives in Horta
bore out much of the family history.

On line there is much more available, though I believe there to be
transcription errors in this: If the link does not work you can
connect to the site through azores genweb, which is where I found
this. Took my family back 24 generations.

So I will not write more until I find that you are still interested
in this research, or that this email still is valid. I live in
Manhattan in New York, so I am on the East Coast. My California
research has involved my visits home. And then to Faial.

Sincerely,

Mary Anne Rose

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Bedford Churches

2009-01-09 Thread Patricia Butcher
Hi Nancy,
Found a website for St Lawrence Catholic church in New Bedford, Ma
with beautiful photos. They even have one of Father Sullivan. Thought
you might be interested. Here is the link:
http://www.saintlawrencemartyr.com/gallery/pages/photo1.htm

Still looking for my elusive great Aunt's marriage record, Maria Rosa
Jorge. Have searched every church in New Bedford for the past 7 years
except this one. Looks like I can email them. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Cheri,
Well after your note I decided I'd call and clarify things. The
priest, Father Sullivan answered the phone and after explaining
everything he told me he'd look it up right then and call me back!
So.he just called...found the record and he said that that far
back 1866 they didn't put down all the info like they began doing
later. It had my ggrandparents names but not their parents or
villages. Anyway, he's sending me a copy of it and suggested I get a
copy from the state. The civil record that I found on NEGHS was how
I found the date of the marraige and the fact that Josephs father
was Antone Pereira and his mother Zabina de Jesus.I can't quite
read the mothers name of Rosa Luiza.it looks like Hannah which
doesn't seem Portuguese but it does say she's from Pico which is
what the family says.the priest said her last name could be
Luza.my family says either Gracia or Furtado..I just don't know!
I'm putting my check in tomorrows mail and appreciate the gracious
help they gave me so much!
Thanks for the nudge!
Nancy

Nancy,

The church will send you a fill in the blank certificate that they
would hand to a bride and groom today. It will say that the bride
married the groom by the priest on this date and the witnesses
were. If you want to know if the village was recorded in the
marriage book, you could ask if that information was noted in the
marriage book and if so, you need to ask for a xerox copy from the
book and if that is not possible, a typed transcription that also
includes any margin notes. Tell them that you are sending a
donation to the church and then do it (it helps the rest of us genealogists).

Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Feliz Natal / Merry Christmas

2008-12-25 Thread Patricia Butcher

Elaine,
Wish I did have some of that delicious Port wine. When I visited the
church of Santa Barbara in Ribeiras, Pico in 2001, the new young
priest invited me into his home for some refreshment. Was so
surprised when it turned out to be a small glass of Port wine. Have
never tasted anything so good!!

Merry Christmas to all the wonderful members of the list. I want to
thank each and everyone of you for the help you have given me over
the years. May your 2009 be filled with many blessings, good health
happiness.

Thanks for commenting, John. I had forgotten about the name, Vianna.

Lynne and Pat,
There is a Portuguese surname Vianna. Could it
possibly have been that originally?

Dear Listers,
Lynne Barnard from my Tipperary genealogy list
asked for suggestions help. I've sent her
several websites to search. If anyone has any
other suggestions, please contact Lynne at:

Lynne Barnard mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]

Here is her query:

I am looking for the Vienna family. In particular Antonio Vienna
(Viena?...I found a website that advised that
Viena (Vieira?) is the Portuguese
spelling?) born 1826 in Portugal (possibly Lisbon?) to Joseph Vienna and
Rose Rivers.

He died in Geelong Victoria Australia in 1893.

He married Catherine Hogan in Geelong Victoria Australia 22/07/1856.
Catherine was born 1834 in Tipperary, Ireland. I have a copy of their
wedding certificate but it only confirms the parents names and lists
Portugal only, no town.

I cannot find Antonio on any shipping lists but his occupation is listed as
seaman. One Australian distant relative has come to the conclusion that he
probably jumped ship here but this is only a guess.

He had a brother John Vienna born circa 1830 in Portugal and died in Geelong
Victoria Australia 1907.

Thanks again

Regards
