[AZORES-Genealogy] Help deciphering Inventário...

2020-01-27 Thread Scott Edward Anderson
Olá amigos e amigas,

I have a few pages from an Inventário for my 4th great-grandmother that I need
some help with; specifically, deciphering some of the language around her house
and quinta in Fajã de Cima, São Miguel.

However, the Archive said expressly not to post the Inventários on the Internet
or social media. So, I’m wondering whether someone here could take a look at
these few pages and let me know what you think? I will email it to you
privately, if you provide an email address.

Obrigado,

Scott

[AZORES-Genealogy] Parish archives after 1911

2019-12-30 Thread Scott Edward Anderson
It appears the Parish archives in Ponta Delgada are limited to 1911. Does
anyone know whether records after 1911 were kept and where they may be
found?

I seem to recall someone posting about obtaining copies of Inventarios and
other documents from the Archives in Ponta Delgada, but I can't seem to
find the posting. DOes anyone know what the process is?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Borges and Candida of Faja de Baixo, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel

2019-07-22 Thread Scott Edward Anderson
I am returning to Sao Miguel this month and am seeking information about my
ancestors from there, including Maria de Jose Borges (born 15 May 1856 on
Sao Miguel and baptized in Faja de Cima; died 1937, Providence, RI), her
parents Manuel Borges (born abt. 1814; died 1863, Sao Miguel) and Francisca
Candida (b. abt 1812; died 1882, Sao Miguel). Manuel's parents were Jose
Francisco Borges and Anna Maria de Valles; Francisca's parents were Antonio
de Medeiros and Dionisa Teresa (possibly Candida). Any ideas or leads would
be most welcome.

Obrigado,

Scott

[AZORES-Genealogy] Is there way to identify streets where parents lived from baptismal records?

2018-07-07 Thread Scott Edward Anderson
I’m traveling to São Miguel next weekend and wondering whether there is a way
to determine where my great-grandparents (and their parents) lived from
baptismal or marriage records? I know they were both from Fajã de Cima and
emigrated from there in 1905, but not much more than that...

They both had surname Casquilho —their father’s we’re brothers—and had Pereira
and Borges surnames on their mothers’ sides.

"Jornaleiro" makes more sense, but couldn't that also be news agent or
newsboy rather than journeyman? That's probably what it is...

The record number is SMG-PD-FAJADECIMA-B-1885-1889_1887_0024

Unfortunately, I don't have the link at hand.

Thank you, Cheri! I know my maternal great-grandfather, Jose Rodrigues
Casquilha, was born on 30 March 1888, so this record is helpful (I hope).

In answer to Pam Santos' question earlier: I am now NOT sure who Jose's

Cheri,

Thanks for that information. How soon after birth does baptism typically
occur in the Azores? A week after birth? A month?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Casquilha/Casquilho from Faja de Cima, Sao Miguel island

2018-01-06 Thread Scott Edward Anderson
Indeed, Margaret. this listing looks consistent with what I have for the
parents of my great-grandfather Jose Rodrigues Casquilha (born 1888):
Francisco Rodrigues Casquilha and Marie Jose Ermelinda. His siblings were Maria
Ermelinda Casquilha (born 1879) and Joao Rodrigues Casquilha (born 1885).
And Faja de Cima appears in Maria's record. This is wonderful! Thank you. I
am traveling to Sao Miguel this coming summer and will use this information
to see what more I can find.

Thank you so much!
