Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] How to determine the last name

2017-12-16 Thread Cheri Mello
I know when I started with TMG, it was the mid-90s and I purchased version
2. When they quit making it in 2014, they were at version 9. So in about 20
years, they had 7 versions. So that's about a new version every 2.5 years.
Not bad. FTM had one every single year!

As for learning new programs (or new anything), yes, technology comes fast
and it is hard to keep up. Do the best you can and practice the new thing
daily for a week. Then do it every couple of days. Then let it go for a
week and see if you remember. It's about repetition to make it stick. It
seems as we age, we do need more repetition to make things stick. It's not
impossible, just takes patience.

As for FTMs Index, it does NOT look like it can handle the extra columns
with birth and death, parents, spouse as the Index tab on Legacy Family
Tree does or the People tab that RootsMagic does (or what TMG does). See
this:
https://support.mackiev.com/530176-Using-the-Index-of-Individuals-in-Family-Tree-Maker

So as your database grows and you get multiple people with the same name,
you may find that FTM no longer meets your needs. Then you'll need to look
at Legacy or RootsMagic. If you already have the inkling that it's no
longer meeting your needs, I'd look into it while your database is smaller
instead of waiting until it gets larger. You might as well learn through
repetition on a NEW program instead of the old that does not meet your
needs. For YEARS, I drove about 50 minutes to a TMG User Group meeting. We
met every other month, so it was only 6 times a year. Some have User Groups
online, as well as Lists like this one and Facebook User Groups too. So
there's lots of support out there if you want to switch.

As far as I know, none of the online or cloud based programs (Ancestry.com,
My Heritage, Geni.com, FamilySearch's Family Trees) allow for search
features. Stand alone programs have these features and more useful things
for managing a database. The online or cloud based are NOT really meant to
manage your genealogy. To me, it's more of a display of your work and a way
to find potential cousins and network with them. I have no idea how I'd
manage several thousand people on an online, cloud-based tree.

I am another TMG Refugee and do not want to change as the longer I have it the
more I like it. I have used Family Tree Maker in the past and every year or two
they had an upgrade which seemed more like ascetics than any real improved
functionality. At least with TMG now there is no support so I don’t have to
worry about shelling out $ for another upgrade. Looking at the other programs
out there the best ones seem to be Roots Magic and Legacy.

Actually, I'm a "TMG Refugee." LOL. A holdout from "The Master Genealogist"
program. A couple of guys down in Australia are trying to come up with a
replacement, so us refugees just keep holding out. I've never used any of the
others. The only program I have ever used for my personal genealogy was TMG,
going back to the mid-90s. I have copies of Legacy and RootsMagic on my
computer because people send me their files in native format, instead of
Gedcom. Gedcoms are needed to upload or transfer to any outside site, such as
Family Tree DNA. Somewhere, I have FTM 2012 on disk. I do have a Genealogy
Software speech that I give, so I do know the basics of each program and can
figure things out. I've nixed TMG out of that speech though. Cheri

I too thank you Cheri. I have used FTM for years, but can’t find a way to
filter things like you do on the other programs. However, I am not a computer
whiz and as I age, I am finding I know less and can’t keep well with the
changes. I especially like the shot where you could filter all the Maria’s
with there information and show their parent’s inform so ine can make a quick
scan of those with just lst names. I haven’t found it in FTM but...IF anyone
does I am very interested!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] How to determine the last name

2017-11-22 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Elizabeth CJ,

Your Maria is just Maria de Jesus. She doesn't have a last name. Women
didn't have them, especially during the mid-1800s on. Here's an article
about naming traditions that explains it: https://goo.gl/iu7zLp

Once you get used to the fact they don't have surnames, it's not a problem.
Just set up your genealogy program so you can see the parents' names.
Here's a snapshot of a bunch of baby Marias:

If I find a marriage of a Maria, born to José de Mello and Rosa da Ponte, I
just check to see if I have her above.

I also have an additional column beyond the "Mother's Name" column, called
"Spouse's Name":

That also assists me in finding which Maria da Conceição that I may need.

All of your stand alone genealogy programs that you purchase that live on
your computer have some type of finding aid to assist you in determining
who is who. Legacy is similar to the one I posted, using the column format
above. RootsMagic shows a little snapshot of facts to the right of the
person, showing the parents and spouse. It's just not in column format. To
my knowledge, the tree builders on the web (Ancestry.com, My Heritage,
Geni, etc), don't have these features. Ancestry, for example, lists the
person's name and birth and death dates only. It makes it hard to tell
which Maria you want.

Yeah, it seems weird to enter people with no last name, but you get used to
it.
Good luck and happy hunting!

[AZORES-Genealogy] How to determine the last name

2017-11-22 Thread E Jewkes
Dear Azores genealogy research group,

Can anyone help me learn how to determine a person's last name, especially
the females? Time and time again, I find individuals to connect to my tree
but I can't determine a last name. Here is one example. Maria de Jesus was
born to Francisco Miguel de CASTRO and Maria de Jesus 1 March 1842. The baptism
record

has her name as just Maria. Her marriage record

has her name as Maria de Jesus. I know that quite often the Portuguese
would choose their last name by the time they were at marrying age. Is
there a rule of thumb if you can't find a last name, though?
