[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: caton or caetano to ashland area, bay area from Flores, then Mass., Also Garcia, Alvernaz or Harvey.

2013-07-17 Thread Lynn
My earliest Azorean immigrant of Caton/Caetano name was Capt. Manuel
(Emanuel) R. Caton to Provincetown, MA., B: 28 May 1862, Santa Maria Isl.,
Died/Lost at Sea with his whole crew @ Dec/Jan 1918 off Florida coast. He
married Ida Silva/Silver, a daughter of Captain Joseph Silva and Rosa
Bernardo Silva. He was known as the Strong man of Provincetown for
supposedly dragging a 400+ pound piece of iron from a P-town shore to his
home. They had 8 children born and at least 4 died before age 5. Those who
made it to adulthood were: William, Frank Fish, Emma F. and maybe Rosa
(unproven).
There were at least 2 other Caton men who made their homes in P-town around
the same time. John, the gardener, is said to have worked for the artist
Charles Webster Hawthorne's property, and the records the artist kept still
exist. His granddaughter have them - mentioning John Caton as sitting for
her grandfather as a general model, probably mostly when weather would not
allow John to do his garden chores. The other man was also named Manuel,
and I think this is the one who is your direct. I am very interested in
learning more about these three Caton men of P-town, as I suspect they were
related somehow. An interesting sidenote: Your Alverez sounds a bit like
my 3x's great grandmother's name of Alves, but I suppose they are
entirely different names - like Johnson and Johnston? Some Caton's are
still in the Cape Cod area, and my research with them is going slowly. I
live in Arizona.

I have Caetano from Lages, Flores in my maternal side, although haven't

from Lages, Floresheck, I thought Caetano was the name of a village.
Learning more as I go along. My g-grandmother came to New

Bristol County, Mass.

You can search the Flores church records online which is how I found my

a few Portuguese words to help me and using Bing's translator, I'm sure the

Hello Rose,
Your name is familiar to me:) My family came from the Warm Springs area and
I just recognize your name.I think my aunt Anita Maciel DeValle
mentioned you to me when we were talking about Mission San Jose
peopleshe is deceased now. I grew up in Centerville but went to St Mary
of the Palms in Mission San Jose. I feel like you were connected to the MSJ
festas.Do you know Velma Valencia? She is not so well now, but she
collected a lot of information on the MSJ Holy Ghosts.I feel like I saw
your name in her hand made book? Also Harvey.I remember there was an
Adeline Harvey that was a hairdresser in MSJ or Irvington? My parents were
Isabel Maciel Vargas and Ernest Vargas.lived in Centerville after WWII.
My mom worked for Dr. Grimmer, Dr. McMahon and also Dr. Romito at various
times as a receptionist. My mom was also very active in
organizationsSPRSI, YLI, etc. Does any of this ring a bell? Just
thought I would say hello...I have lived in Sacramento for the last
almost 50 years...so been away from Fremont. If you want to chat you can

Susan,

You email me, your prima Rosemarie, instead of Rose who has family in Mission
San Jose. I know you probably just clicked on the first “Rose” that came up on
your list!

Prima, Rosemarie

Hello Rose,
Your name is familiar to me:) My family came from the Warm Springs area and I
just recognize your name.I think my aunt Anita Maciel DeValle mentioned you
to me when we were talking about Mission San Jose peopleshe is deceased
now. I grew up in Centerville but went to St Mary of the Palms in Mission San
Jose. I feel like you were connected to the MSJ festas.Do you know Velma
Valencia? She is not so well now, but she collected a lot of information on
the MSJ Holy Ghosts.I feel like I saw your name in her hand made book?
Also Harvey.I remember there was an Adeline Harvey that was a hairdresser
in MSJ or Irvington? My parents were Isabel Maciel Vargas and Ernest
Vargas.lived in Centerville after WWII. My mom worked for Dr. Grimmer, Dr.
McMahon and also Dr. Romito at various times as a receptionist. My mom was also
very active in organizationsSPRSI, YLI, etc. Does any of this ring a bell?
Just thought I would say hello...I have lived in Sacramento for the last
almost 50 years...so been away from Fremont. If you want to chat you can email
me at uberlin...@aol.com

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: caton or caetano to ashland area, bay area from Flores, then Mass., Also Garcia, Alvernaz or Harvey.

2013-07-15 Thread Robin Borba Besotes
My 2nd great grandmother was:
Luisa Canhoto JacintaBorn 1847 in Santa Cruz das, Flores, Azores Death Jan
22 1879 in San Juan or Hollister, California

Her parents were:
Manuel Canhoto Jacinta
Mariana Julia da Gloria Rodrigues 1810 -

Her widower married Luisa's Niece:
Filomena Jacinto Birth 21 Sep 1878 or 1862 in Flores, Azores, PortugalDeath 16
Aug 1952 in Contra Costa, CA

Luisa, above came to Massachusetts as well, then onto San Juan, California.
She married Daniel Francisco DeRosa (from Pico). They had two children.
She died a few months after giving birth to twins (one twin being my Great
Grandmother). Daniel married Luisa's niece Filomena. They had five
children between this marriage.

When I went to San Benito County, California to do research I too was told
the family names on this line were: Caetano, Garcia as well as Jacinto and
Rodrigues. All these name have panned out and were correct. Some took on
Caetano, some Jacinto, etc.

Feel free to email me at besotes (at) succeed.net. I have met another
genealogy person who is related on this line as well. He's not on this
group, or I'd introduce you to him.

All the best,
Robin Borba Besotes

Robin,
Do these people connect to this Caetano family, or do you mean to start a
new thread?
