2017-02-09 Thread danandmaria
I did speak with her last week, and she mentioned she had 6 people waiting for
information. She said she would work on all on a first come first served basis.

Well Cheri, if she doesnt get ahold of you let me know. Maybe i can text her
and ask for a favor before she goes home from work one day. She is a very nice
lady and i doubt she would have a problem with it. Keep me posted!

Thanks, Joanne, for the

At one point you said St. John's (the subject of this thread) and at

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] St. John the Baptist & Mount Carmel churches in New Bedford, Massachusetts

2017-01-25 Thread 'celeste perry' via Azores Genealogy

Thank you, Maria, for your offer to help me. I have the following information
about the person I call "the elusive Maria Cristo."
The information I have regarding Maria Cristo and her connection to St.
Mary's in Bristol, RI is that she married Filippe Perreira Da Silva there on
November 27th, 1909. I have a copy (actually a form filled in with the
information) of that marriage.
I have been told that she "would have had to provide a baptismal certificate
from the "old country" before the marriage. I was also told that getting into
those sealed records is not impossible just requires a very sympathetic cleric
or parish secretary who is into genealogy.
I tried contact via a written letter and, as I mentioned, the response was a
note written in the margin of my letter and the return of the $20.00 I sent
with the letter. Any help you can give me in looking for additional
information that MAY exist is appreciated.

I’m sorry you had that experience, Celeste. My sources tell me that
particular rectory is a bit of a mess personnel-wise so I’m not sure they’d
go the extra mile to look in the files. Parishes need more encouragement
like what we’re doing in the Archdiocese of Boston to get them to give us
genealogists a good helping hand.

I called this
morning, and the church secretary, Tammy, said the St. John
books are there. She won't photocopy or take a picture
of the book but will issue a paper certificate. I told her
the certificate doesn't have a blank for the
freguesia/village that the bride and groom are from. She
said to state that in an email to her and she'll add it
in. So now I play "wait and see."
At least we have confirmation that the books are there
as of January 2017.

[AZORES-Genealogy] St. John the Baptist & Mount Carmel churches in New Bedford, Massachusetts

2017-01-22 Thread Cheri Mello
When St. John the Baptist closed in New Bedford, the parishioners and Fr.
Oliveira all went over to Mount Carmel on Bonney Street. It is my
understanding that the books went there too.

Has anyone gone over there recently to utilize the St. John's books? I need
a marriage from 1907 that occurred at St. John the Baptist.
Thanks, Cheri
