RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA "Basics" question
Hi Cheri, Thanks for your patient help. I think you’ve supported the FTDNA suggestion: Y-DNA 37 is a reasonable place to start for males, coupled with Family Finder. Then, as you explained, people can go back and purchase upgrades as needed/wanted over time - especially when on sale : ). I did spend more time going through FamilyFinder matches, and found 11 pertinent surname matches leading to the sought after ancestor. So, in this instance, probably a lack of direct males testing via Y-DNA. FYI, suspect a website glitch: when searching from the main FamilyFinder Results page, just 2 surname matches were found. The other matches were revealed when searching trees attached to individuals within the master list. (I had saved emails re prior searches and was able to ‘re-find’ the additional ‘hits’ – this time making a master list of them.) Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA "Basics" question
Marsha, No, not a basic question. And getting really off topic. Going from 37 to 67 (or higher) should show how much closer in time 2 matches may be. Example: 2 men match 35 out of 37 markers. At 67 markers, they match 63 out of 67. At 111, they match 105 out of 111. The two men would share the same surname and be from the same family. The Genetic Distance (GD) was 2 at 37 markers (37 markers - 35 matches = 2), a GD of 4 at 67 and a GD of 6 at 111. In the earlier stages of a Surname Project the project admin keeps track of this and starts to build family groups. It will tell how far back the mutation happened. The Admin looks at which markers mutated, if they were fast or slow moving markers, mutation rates, micro-alleles, etc. (Admins learn this as we go along). I cannot see the Stringer page you are speaking about, but if he has no 12, 25, or 37 marker matches with the surname Stringer, he's not going to get any at 67 either. Either his Stringer family has not tested or this would be the case of an NPE (Non-Paternal Event, but I prefer to call it Not the Parent Expected). RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA "Basics" question
Cheri, I ‘think’ my question is re what going from YDNA 37 to 67, etc reveals; how it helps/works re distant ancestry. I ‘think’ from our limited explorations, that I’d recommend both YDNA and FamilyFinder for males. The example is my husband, so not Azores; hopefully on-topic within the ‘Basics’ category. He’s taken the FamilyFinder and YDNA 37 tests. The ‘37’ level was suggested by FTDNA in a phone call at the time of the order. The particular quest for him is a STRINGER male, b abt 1698 (5xG gfa; abt 250 yrs earlier). This in seeking definition amongst 3 known lines in the same area, same approximate times (other 2 lines documented earlier 1600s; no paper trail to connect any of the three [although many online trees have copy/pasted some incorrectly together]). We considered an upgrade to 67 (also inquired about yet higher), but again, the folks at FTDNA indicated increasing the markers would not help re searching that far back. (At least, that’s what I thought they said.) YDNA Matches: Not one (37- or 25- or 12-marker level) includes the family name; if names and/or earliest ancestor included in match name lists or trees, more recent than our information. Family Finder: Trolling through associated trees of others did show some potential matches – and some of those ‘match’ trees include ancestors of the other two lines we’re searching. Maria Elena, Yes, check out the bundle prices here: goo.gl/V0dHk3 Find the one that fits your budget. If you need to skimp, then order a lesser marker YDNA test if you are doing a bundle. You can upgrade to more markers later. FTDNA most likely will have their Holiday Sale at the end of the year. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA "Basics" question
Maria, I think the question you are asking is: If I get Family Finder DNA testing with ftDNA, do they use the same DNA you gave them in the first place to do Y testing? If that is your question, the answer is yes. If you are talking monetarily, each test price is separate unless they bundle certain tests to get more people to participate. I see you are interested in your husband's patrilineal line. If that is your only interest Y testing would be the course to take. When most of us talk about finding "cousins" it gets very complicated. We are not just talking about finding straight patrilineal lines or straight matrilineal lines. We are including the marriages, too. We have one mother and father, two grandmothers and grandfathers, four great grandmothers, and grandfathers, etc. Our DNA includes "cousins" from all of these people. If you have an interest in finding out all of your genealogy, I would think Family Finder would be the test you would find most useful. I hope this helps, Tish On Thu, Aug 11, 2016 at 8:19 AM, Richard Francis Pimentel < rfrancispimen...@comcast.net> wrote: > *Yes Maria DNA can be confusing. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA "Basics" question
Hi Rick, thank you for answering. Okay, I wasn't specific..All my research is on the line of my husband, Paul Lima. So as the results of the family finder DNA Cannot be used for "any other" information, then if I want the "Y" test does that mean if I want to trace the paternal line way way back, do we sign up all over again requesting only the "Y" test? I somehow thought one kept paying more money and they could extract more info based on the first DNA test (the autosomal). But it sounds like we take another (the Y) test separate from the family finder test. (?) Thanks for being patient with my question. Yes Maria DNA can be confusing. Only a male can be tested for his Y- DNA woman do not carry the Y Chromosome so they cannot be tested.
