Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Online database of birth or baptismal records?
Repost for Tiffany Borges: Hello, It appears that I've found a living sister of Anna Borges Roderick ~ Maria de Jesus Borges Sozinho, who survives this man. I cannot wait to tell our 84-year old Uncle Joe that his father (1905-1950)'s sister is still alive. My Christmas is complete. Thank you dearly to Elaine and each of you who have taught me a lot about the patterns to look for in the brief time I've been following this list. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/lodinews/obituary-print.aspx?n=john-sozinhopid=154079774 Tiffany in Alaska -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Online database of birth or baptismal records?
This is my line on Borges from Riberia Grande, Sao Miguel. I don't know if there is a connection. My grandfather did come to this country and Bermuda in the early 1900's for work as a custom furniture maker, but went back to Sao Miguel. He was the eldest and had three sisters; Judite, Marquinas, Sophia. His father died in the 1890's. Mother Maria Rosa remarried and came to the US and had four more daughters. Maria Rosa is the descendant of the Cabral/Velhos/Travassos lines. My mother is Ines Estrella Borges Furtado. Hi hi hi! Writing from Alaska with a general question: I am researching my husband's grandparents' lives and emigration from the Azores. I see the post regarding baptismal records and am wondering if these have been compiled somewhere online? Or are people providing these from family records and scanning them in, for individual input? In our case, we have two handwritten birth records which I've tried to translate using the online sites, to little avail. I am overwhelmed but energized to find all of you! The towns I am focused on are Praia de Vitoria and Ribeirinha, surnames Borges and Voz Toste respectively. They both departed in 1917-1920 and married in California. I'm also coming to a dead end when looking online for marriage records. Hoping to contact all of the Catholic Churches in the county which were there in that era, maybe that's a start? Thank you for any leads. My thoughts are scattered and I am a beginner, so I apologize for being all over the ... map. ; ) -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Do you know which island? The surnames BORGES and VOZ TOSTE sound familiar. Tiffany, I am sending you an emergency passport record for Jose Borges Toste and his wife Maria Conceicao Borges and child Jose Borges Toste to your personal email address. Maria was born in Santa Luiza, Terceira, Jose just says Terceira. Are these your people? Elaine -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Online database of birth or baptismal records?
The baptismal record I sent was from a microfilm that I was using at a Family History Center. I scanned the image from the film. There are a lot of films that cover the Catholic Church's parish records for the Azores places all over the world. There are about 20 FHC's in Alaska from what I see. I don't know where you are or how close you may be to a Family History Center. Go to : familysearch.org click on Family History Centers. You can do a search for the state to see where the Centers are. Maybe you will be lucky one will be close to you. Good luck! Sherry In a message dated 12/8/2011 8:16:06 A.M. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Online database of birth or baptismal records?
Hi Tiffany, Knowing you are researching your spouse's grandparents doesn't give us a time line. If your husband is 25, his grandparents could be 75 (born in the 1930s). If your husband is 75, his grandparents could have been born in the 1880s. There would be different locations to begin your search. So it's best to write by using dates. Some people scan and post records they have found from their local Family History Center (FHC). Some people provide links from the CCA web site (Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores). The CCA has only a small portion of records online. You should look on the Azores GenWeb to get an idea of how to extract the info from the Portuguese records: http://goo.gl/AGgvp Also, it's good to mention the island. Praia da Vitoria is on Terceira. There's a Ribeirinha on Terceira, Sao Miguel, and forget where else. Why don't you post the name of one ancestor, his birth, marriage, immigration, death, census, or whatever you have found. Then post what you have for his wife. Once we see the facts we will be better to help you.
