Here are the parents Massachucetts marriage record. The fact that Mary is one 
year older than Jose shows up in most of their records. That's unique, as 
anyone who's been at this awhile knows. Ages are highly variable


even when you know you have the right people. 


I previously posted their daughter Mary's birth record from Taunton, 1903. 


 I know , different cities, but these were mill workers, so when demand slowed 
, they shut off the mills and people went looking for work elsewhere. My ggg 
grandparents worked in the Lowell Mills  about 1890, but their kids were born a


 few years later in Swansea, thrn a year later, out to California. 


The two marriage records show the registration for marriage, the other the 
recording of the ceremony.




There may be  good clue here that Maria's father is shown as Jose Conceicao, 
that her name listed wasn't just the religious suffix. 


The next step is to get them identified on the passport leaving the Azores.

Incredible!!   I am certain that Belmira is our Velma.  The 1931 newspaper 
divorce notice would indicate that she is the one!!

If I have the correct Joe and Mary Cotta, then their buried in the Tulare city 
cemetery.

Dave's DNA shows a lot of match to the central islands. Sao Jorge and
Terceira would fit.

Once he digests the information and if he goes forward with pursuing this
line, I'd suggest he'd find his half-brother Edward Coelho, or Edward's
descendants and DNA test one of them. Or trace the family of Joe M. & Mary
Cotta through the censuses, looking for siblings of Velma. That would be my
strategy (for whatever that's worth).

The 1940 Census shows Belle as Balbina Lopes - must have been her original
name before she Americanized it to Belle.

Yes, a few married very young. Just wanted to be sure you recalled Dave
said his mom was born c. 1910.

Dave,

Another wild guess may be in the 1933 Los Angeles County marriage record of
Joseph Thomas Lopes, the son of Herculeano and Bell Lopes.

The witness is " Billie Sexton" with a L A address. Could be Velma with a
stage name. I've tried the city directories to find that person and address
without sucess.

I've been working with Dave on this for many years , off list.
Every lead from the marriage record to Joe Hughes has been worked over
endlessy. Every Cotta and Velma in the state on that time period has been
looked at and dissmissed before.

I'm looking at a family connection to Belle and Herculeano Lopes, where she
had lived for a time. He is easy to track with that name. His draft cards
both show him from Santa Maria.

Bell Lopes death record shows Vierra fathers name and Cotta as mothers
maiden . However their son's marriage record shows her as Balbina Broga.

Anyone have these names in their tree?

Debra,
Thank you for the link.  Yes, we found it a few years ago and that led us
to the marriage license information.  The marriage license showed where
Velma lived at the time, her age and that she was divorced.   A true wealth
of information that we did not know before that.
