Re: [BackupPC-users] Error: Unable to connect to BackupPC server

2009-09-17 Thread Renke Brausse

Should I run configure.pl to re-install backuppc and see if it works?

Also, if I re-install backuppc, will that delete the backups on the
backup dir (/data) or will that remain there?

I just want to make sure that my backups are not deleted if I
 re-install backuppc.

under normal circumstances reinstalling of backuppc never touches config
files and backuppc pool.

but it seems that something is broken on your machine - I refuse any
responsibility :)

[I don't know any backuppc install/uninstall method which removes the
pool (normally located in /var/lib/backuppc/). imo a reinstallations is
safe if you store ypur server and client config files somewhere else
while removing and installing your backuppc server)

Re: [BackupPC-users] Noob questions

On the other hand, if you are just backing up home directories on two
 computers, BackupPC may be overkill.

but backuppc is convenient - okay, I have to admit that I use it to
backup my ~25 servers so I'm maybe not really unbiased in my opinions
regarding decent backup solutions.

but anyway: I have an old laptop with debian and backuppc running on my
cabinet just to backup my current laptop :)

It's that initial setup / learning curve... If was past that I'd be
setting up BackupPC on the toaster oven.

excellent point. I started with some backuppc 2.x and my current 3.x is
_really_ user friedly and easy going. but if I try to imagine what would
happen when I just looked for a simple backup solution for my private
needs BackupPC would be overkill. why should I invest time for something
like a stupid file copy application?

long story short: yes, backuppc is not simple - but a running instance
is like fire-and-forget. I just start my laptop and home and one to two
hours later everything is safe on the RAID of my backuppc server.

nobody wants backup, everyone demands restore is imo possible with a
configured backuppc :)

In fact, it has become so fire-and-forget that part of me worries
what if it really is not doing what I think and hope it is... Maybe I
should check it out once in a while ;)

the configuration at home is similar to the one at work (and to be
honest: I played with backuppc while I was paid in office, not while my
leisure time ;) ) - and as my (l)users delete _often_ files and the
restore works stable I trust my box on the cabinet (especially after
receiving no backups! panic mails from my home server while
vacations...)

2009-04-22 Thread Renke Brausse
Does anybody have a fix to let it be used in a text mode browser or a
  browser w/o javascript?
This isn't quite what you asked for, but a much nicer way to do remote
administration is to run freenx on a stable 'inside' linux box where you
have ssh access, and use the NX client from http://www.nomachine.com on
your laptop (and perhaps other machines).

imo NX is overkill - a ssh tunnel to port 80 of the backuppc host is
sufficient...

but more on-topic: I like John's proposal, a plain html page would be
nice, I don't see the need for javascript in the GUI.

The size of backups varies. I have gotten the aborted by signal=PIPE
error by 6GB backups while I have also gotten for 30-40GB backups.

I have also increased the timeout period to a large number since I

I never saw your specific failure but I just switched every (linux-)host
with backup troubles to tar over ssh.

Neither elegant nor bandwith saving but working.

Give it a try :)

I misread the question of Rob and thought he only asked if saving the

On Debian /var/lib/backuppc is used, should be similar in Ubuntu

Is there a recommended partitioning schema for BackupPC? What are

I setted up nothing special, the seperate huge backup raid-5 is

not directly in one set (as far as I know...) but if you use backuppc 3+

So standard usb drives should be fine, firewire i have used, but only on
firewire i have used, but only on later kernels which support the cards
(fc6+), esata i'm yet to explore
but im guessing that it too will have issues with drivers and kernel
versions like firewire. I pretty much stick to CentOS, and firewire
drivers aren't available in version 5, so im guessing esata are not
 also.

under high load firewire seems sometimes to be unstable, if you are
interested I can search for English sources (I read this so far only on
German pages)

Sure, this is the base for every backup - the backup service has to be

In our environment I save the windows boxes with the domain admin

Re: [BackupPC-users] How to delete a Backup

2007-10-24 Thread Renke Brausse
Hi Romain,

I know only one official way: Delete your host in the config, on the
next day you will get a mail from the backuppc-server that the files in
[directory] can be safely deleted. After that it should be able to
include the host again from the local copy of the config file (do this
before removing the host ;) )

The entry in hosts should be like
[servername] 0 [responsible user or mail address]

and the .pl has to be named like your server, e.g. [servername].pl.

You can configure backuppc to use every user that has right to the

You can test the connection from the bash of your backuppc host with the
command
smbclient --user [configured user in pl] [servername]\\[share

Hello Stephen,

This provides a near-optimal solution, I think, for laptop backups. The
very first backup of a laptop may take a few minutes if there is a lot of
data (so should occur on the local LAN if possible), but future backups for
most users take under 5 minutes!

Your described soltution sounds very impressive, this looks excatly like
the backup for my road warriors I'm thinking about a long time.

I would be very happy if you can publish your scripts,

on localhost I see in your pdf many transfer errors - it is possible
that you try to backup many directories without access for the backuppc
user? Without real knowledge about it: I can imagine that such access
denied issues are time consuming.

So I have two suggestions for further test:
- Check the access right on localhost
- Switch one of your XP clients to SMB transport

My backup host uses the double amount of RAM but I don't see a reason
why only 512 mb should be such a performance killer.

I'd rather not switch to SMB, yet. Maybe, you could comment on the above
first. It was quite a problem for me setting backuppc up the way it is now.
Never change a running system ;-)
Maybe debugging localhost already helps. If you insist, I'll switch to SMB
 though ;-)
To say it short: I have no idea what could be your problem with the
backuppc server - switching to smb was only an idea that - maybe - leads
to a faster backup (but this can't be the explanation as your local
backup is slow, too).

Sorry, I don't think that I can give you a useful hint for a solution,
maybe another list user can help you with this topic.

I use backuppc for a full backup of 12 servers (most Linux) plus some
other machines with backing up of some shares only, on a daily basis we
have around 12 GB new files (before compression, average of last week).

Our backup server is really boring: A Pentium-4 based host with a RAID5
of 5 400 GB SATA harddisks on a 3Ware 9500 controller, the funny amount
of 1 GB RAM, connected with gigabit ethernet to our LAN.

Though this machine isn't the dream of a sysop it is working well: Our
backup window is from 19:30 to 07:00 and only sometimes (e.g. the
fileserver has it's weekly full backup) I can see a longer running dump.

So in my eyes the hardware isn't the important point, a low to middle
class server with a big raid should be in the most cases sufficient.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Default pc pool location

2007-08-10 Thread Renke Brausse
Hi Lee,

I believe the pool is hard coded to /var/lib/backuppc - I solved this on
my box with a bind mount to my storage file system.

Hope this helps,
Renke

How do I change where the pc pool location is? I’d like to mount it
