[beagleboard] Getting started information for ubuntu 13.04 on BBB (similar to Angstrom)

2013-11-09 Thread vinayak aghor
Hello All ,
I have downloaded *ubuntu-raring-13.04-armhf-3.8.13-bone20* from
http://www.armhf.com/index.php/boards/beaglebone-black/  & installed on SD
card. It started fine.

Is there any documentation on how to SSH to PC through USB0 (same as
angstrom), changing resolution of screen through command line?

Because I have no LAN internet connection , so I could not install
ubuntu-desktop.

Is there option to use following commands (same as Angstrom).
  - /sbin/route add default gw 192.168.7.1
  - echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" >> /etc/resolv.conf

By this way I can get connected to USB dongle through SSH into PC.

Please help

Regards
Vinayak

[beagleboard] Best way to build Angstrom kernel

2013-11-09 Thread Seth
I would like advice on the best way to rebuild the Angstrom kernel for the
BBB. I need to do this because I do not want HDMI support, but DO want
Audio cape support. I have read (last post
here)
that disabling HDMI patches and rebuilding will do that.

I have rebuilt kernels for embedded Linux before (for the BBW as well as
the FriendlyArm years ago), and I remember it being a complete pain in the
neck. Many days of troubleshooting errors, setting up build environments
and such. I should say that I am still relatively new when it comes to
Linux and I was probably doing things the hard way.

I have been occasionally checking in this group and reading how others
solved their problems which is encouraging. However, I'd like the most
up-to-date instructions to use, if possible. I have been using BBB flasher
images from this
linksince they seem to
upload new images pretty often. I can't seem to find a
change log for those images, however (I see the log on the official
Software Update page but that doesn't cover all the mini-updated images).

I have also read that the patch developers were working on a way for both
HDMI and Audio capes to work at the same time without need to rebuild the
kernel, but I have not seen any news about that lately. I was hoping to
wait until they had those compatibility issues worked out in a new release
so I didn't have to bother with the rebuild, but I've been waiting several
months and am ready to try fixing it myself.

I would like the kernel that I build to be as updated as possible. For
example, the latest flasher image from the link I posted above was from
yesterday, the 8th. I don't know if that's even necessary since I cannot
seem to find the change logs for those images.

I have found (again from the first link I gave) this page
and this
page which
seem to have a pretty good list of instructions. Would you recommend
I follow those or is there a better set of instructions elsewhere that I
could use? Normally I would just jump right in and try it, but I have been
burned before by following out-of-date instructions, wasting lots of time
only to get nowhere. This is especially bad due to the fast-changing nature
of Linux.

I also don't want to spend time doing this process only to find that a
newer image has been released, requiring me to do the whole thing again. I
can't seem to find any "predicted new BBB image release schedule" anywhere.
Does anyone know if any major updates are planned to be released soon?

I thank you in advance for your time and advice.

[beagleboard] Re: U-boot zImage uInitrd confusion?

2013-11-09 Thread Jacob Ole Juul Kolding
Hmm uInitrd doesn't seem to do anything even though its specified in
uEnv.txt.

Anyway I followed this guide:
http://wiki.beyondlogic.org/index.php/BeagleBoneBlack_Building_Kernel

and copied kernel/arch/arm/boot/zImage to /boot/uboot on the flash card,
and it booted (uname -a confirms that its the new kernel)

You probably need to install avahi-daemon into your beaglebone ubuntu
system, then you can use avahi-browse -a from your other machine to find
its name. The default ubuntu hostname is 'arm'.

[beagleboard] Re: HDMI video output too wide on screen

2013-11-09 Thread raa . internet
I was having the very annoying problem of having the edges with the menus
of the GUI outside of the screen for my Panasonic and Toshiba TV's.
The solution I found for the Panasonic TV was to select: MENU > PICTURE >
ADVANCED MENU > HD SIZE: 2
The default HD Size is 1 for the Panasonic TC-37LZ85X. Selecting HD Size 2
solves the problem.

I should also mention that before, I was getting no image, and it was due
to the fact that the mini HDMI connector did not go deep enough into the
receptacle when the Beaglebone Black is inside the Adafruit BBB Case ID
1555.

I know, I felt really annoyed that the Prof who provided the brace was not
so keen on how it was tested... yet provide at least a history report on it.
If the inputs of analog sensors require an extra chip, then I will need to
look around for the chips mentioned in the previous post. Thanks alot for
helping me out! I'll see what happens next.

[beagleboard] RE: Ubuntu 13.04 Beaglebone Black ethernet connection SSH

2013-11-09 Thread Priyank Patel
Hello all,

I have Beaglebone Black eMMC flashed with Ubuntu 13.04 (armhf). I power it
up via USB cable phone charger and connected to my computer via ethernet. I
was successfully able to SSH when I had Ansgstrom distrib., with both USB
provided and Ethernet via command "ssh root@beaglebone.local". Now, after
flashing it with Ubuntu, the only option I have is to hook up Beaglebone to
my home router and lookup its IP via modem settings and SSH. Since it is
inconvenient for me, I am looking for a solution that I can connect it to
my computer via ethernet and SSH via command like "ssh
ubuntu@ubuntu-armhf.local". Although, this command is presented on many
support sites, I have no success with it even after multiple attempts. The
problem I noticed is when I connect the Bone to my computer via ethernet it
is assigned self-ip in the range 169.xxx.xxx.xxx.
Reply would be highly appreciated.

Note: Command ssh ubuntu@ubuntu-armhf.local was tried on mac and linux
systems.

Nice of the other team to leave you no documentation...

I guess if I was stuck with 12 analog inputs and only 7 pins to read them
on I would use something like a 74HC4051 to multiplex the inputs - use 3
gpio pins to control which of the 8 inputs is connected to the ADC on the
BBB. Or use an MCP3426 (or similar) - a 4-channel ADC that you can talk to
over I2C. Either way I think if you want to get 12 into 7, you're going to
need another chip.

Brand is Kingston, and has worked so far using 12.04 and others. I will
reformat it and see what it does. Don't have another brand (yet).

[beagleboard] Re: A Guide for Determining Pin Mux Settings in the Device Tree:

2013-11-09 Thread James Zapico
I just noticed a problem with the http://pinmux.tking.org/p9.html tool. The
p9.html page incorrectly flips the "input enabled" bit. This is confirmed
by looking at the javascript.

The index.html (p8) javascript has this:
if (document.getElementById("inputEnabled").checked){ decPinmux += 32; }
The p9.html javascript has this:
if (document.getElementById("inputEnabled").checked == false){ decPinmux +=
32;
}

I'm attempting to get in touch with the developer to have this fixed.

[beagleboard] Sending an Email message from Beaglebone

2013-11-09 Thread William Pretty Security
Hello All;

I am hoping that someone on the list can help.

I have seen a thread about this before, but couldn't find it.

We have a deadline now past and could REALLY use some help here.

What follows are my colleague's comments from a recent email:

"Last week's effort was simply to use 'sendmail' to get a message out of
board. Angstrom uses a package called 'msmtp' to implement sendmail.

I downloaded this and tried it, but after hours of futzing, I still couldn't
get a message out. Same with Perl; even after managing to install the
necessary perl modules, all that happened was the error message changed.

All of the stuff that I've been trying on Angstrom actually works on Ubuntu,
so I'm thinking Angstrom is not all it's cracked up to be. Next week's
effort will be trying Ubuntu to see if I can get this working.

By the way, NFS functionality doesn't seem to work in Angstrom, either.
This particular distro is _very_ frustrating :("

Here is the distro information:

Image we are using:

Angstrom-Cloud9-IDE-GNOME-eglibc-ipk-v2012.12-beaglebone-2013.06.20.img

Boot Messages:

The Angstrom Distribution beaglebone ttyGS0

Angstrom v2012.12 - Kernel 3.8.13

Thanks;

Bill

[beagleboard] PWM is missing value files (period, duty_cycle, run).

2013-11-09 Thread Bodo Kaiser
Hi,

I am trying hardly to enable pwm on archlinux-3.8.12-13 on the Beaglebone
black.

I came so far that after exporting the overlay there is a directory at
"/sys/devices/ocp.3/pwm_test_P9_16.15".
Unfortunately there are no files in this directory which would allow me to
modify duty_cycle, period and so on. I only find:
modalias power subsystem uevent

My device tree source overlay is:

/*
 * Copyright (C) 2013 CircuitCo
 * Copyright (C) 2013 Texas Instruments
 *
 * Enables PWM through ehrpwm1 on P9_14 and P9_16.
 */

/dts-v1/;
/plugin/;

/ {

part-number = "BB-HONEYMOON";
version = "00A0";

compatible =
"ti,beaglebone",
"ti,beaglebone-black"
;

exclusive-use =
"P9.16",
"ehrpwm1A",
"ehrpwm1B"
;

fragment@0 {
target = <&am33xx_pinmux>;
__overlay__ {
pwm_P9_16: pinmux_pwm_P9_16_pins {
pinctrl-single,pins = <0x04c 0x06>;
};
};
};

fragment@1 {
target = <&ocp>;
__overlay__ {

pwm-names = "PWM_P9_16";

pinctrl-0 = <&pwm_P9_16>;
pinctrl-names = "default";

};
};
};

fragment@2 {

__overlay__ {
status = "okay";
};
};

fragment@3 {
target = <&ehrpwm1>;
__overlay__ {

};

When I export it through slots in bone_capemgr.* I get following in dmesg:

Ok, tried this twice, once with only the SDcard. This stops with "Read-only
file system" as well. Then I tried using a USB stick as storage (although I
actually don't want to) and this goes fine untill finishing. Then it can't
write the boot disk (or have to do this somehow manually). Since it should
be able to boot from the SDcard, I tried this and fails to boot. Then tried
again with only SDcard, and this fails again the same way. To be clear: the
installer suggests to install / and swap on mmcblk 5 and 6 and I say Ok to
that because it doesn't touch the boot partition (right?)

[beagleboard] BBB: update the software

2013-11-09 Thread Tiziano de togni

Days ago I got my BeagleBone Black card. Actually I'm very satisfied for
the choice, I got quite exactly what I expected, and now I have a lot of
things to learn.

The next step for me will be to update the software, and I will not proceed
until I will have clear the whole procedure to follow. About this topic I
see there are lot of tutorials and lot of confusion. Why?

Actually I'm still stucked on the first step: Download the image file of
choice.

So, my Angstrom image version is: Cloud9 GNOME Image 2013.06.06 and I need
at least this version.

Looking for the latest flasher images I found this page:
http://beagleboard.org/latest-images
where there is this link:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/angstrom/demo/beaglebone/BBB-eMMC-flasher-2013.06.20.img.xz

Ok, I say, this is the one I need. But time later, reading this (official)
tutorial:
http://circuitco.com/support/index.php?title=Updating_The_Software

I found this link:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/angstrom/demo/beaglebone/BBB-eMMC-flasher-2013.09.04.img.xz

But, wait a second! There is also another page I found in the primary
software support page:

http://downloads.angstrom-distribution.org/demo/beaglebone/

where I find these two images:
http://downloads.angstrom-distribution.org/demo/beaglebone/BBB-eMMC-flasher-2013.09.12.img.xz

http://downloads.angstrom-distribution.org/demo/beaglebone/BBB-eMMC-flasher-v2013.06-2013.10.20.img.xz

Ok, see there the one of october 20, but STOP! there is an extra six in
front of it, maybe a typo?

Any advice? What should be my guess? TYA
tiziano

[beagleboard] Re: npm install bonescript Error

2013-11-09 Thread Chris Rogers
And I figured out my error...

if you type:

beaglebone# nano
/usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/node-gyp/lib/configsre.js

search for semver.lt and replace

 if (semver.gte(version, '2.5.0') && semver.lt(version, '3.0.0')) {
getNodeDir()
  } else {
failPythonVersion(version)
  }

with

// if (semver.gte(version, '2.5.0') && semver.lt(version, '3.0.0')) {
getNodeDir()
//  } else {
//failPythonVersion(version)
//  }

Then a quick
beaglebone# node -pe "require('bonescript').getPlatform().bonescript"

returns 0.2.3

[beagleboard] GPIO Programming c++ library digita I/O + ADC + PWM

2013-11-09 Thread francescocenci...@cencio.info
Hi all, and sorry for bad english...

I'm an engeneering student.

I've found some C++ library about controlling digital I/O, but nothing
about ADC read and PWM.

I think that are a lot of people that prefer programming in C++, so I
wondered if it is possible to develop a library for Digital I/O , ADC read
and PWM.
I can contribute in this jobs, but i don't have bought the BBB yet, because
i need to know if that library will be available in future

Have a nice day,
Francesco

[beagleboard] Re: Bonescript serial communication ttyO4

2013-11-09 Thread Chris Rogers
I am not sure if you are still having issues - but I got this example
working :

 https://github.com/jadonk/bonescript/blob/master/test/test-serial.js

To get that version working, I had to do a few things:

1. you have to have python on your bone

# opkg update

# opkg install python-compiler
2. you need to shut off the python version check in
/usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/node-gyp/lib/configure.js
- I did this by typing

#nano /usr/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/node-gyp/lib/configure.js
then searching for semver.lt (^W) and then commenting out these lines (NOTE
one does not get commented out):

 // if (semver.gte(version, '2.7.3') && semver.lt(version, '3.0.0')) {

getNodeDir()

 // } else {

 //   failPythonVersion(version)

 // }
3. switch paths to cloud9 (and maybe a reboot for good measure) - I am not
sure why this is necessary - but it is...

cd /var/lib/cloud9

4. Then install the latest bonescript version (0.2.3)

npm install -g bonescript

5. test with

# node -pe "require('bonescript').getPlatform().bonescript"

6. then open cloud9 and run his example code - and all seemed to work

I hope that helps

[beagleboard] Troubleshooting initial software update?

2013-11-09 Thread napoleond1

Hello all,

I've just gotten ahold of my BBB and have been my efforts to make the first
software update have been for naught.

Insofar, these are the steps I've taken for updating the software:

-I've loaded the first listed Angstrom Distribution to my uSD

-I put the card into the BBB and held the BOOT button before powering the
board.

==
I usually get either of the following results:
---PWR LED lights up next to the 5V input (This occured when trying to
boot from a plug-in USB and USB port from my computer)
---Occasionally my computer gets sassy and says that it "Cannot find an
AM335x USB driver". (I downloaded, unzipped all the driver stuff for W7 and
could navigate to it on Chrome, no other driver stuff installed beyond
this).
==

I've searched all over for documentation on this and have come up pretty
short. So my questions are as follows:
-- Is there something I missed that could tell me what's going on?
--If not, would anyone know what's up?
  --If no again, would anyone know an alternative booting
method so I could start trying to mess around on this thing :p?

So I'm definitely new as all getout and will go ahead and apologize for
probably bringing the least technically adept post to this board. Apologies
also if this has already been addressed, a link would be great. Any help
would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance :).

Thanks Cathy for the help, I have been using the beaglebone getting started

with the tutorials. As for the ebooks, il think about it, but thanks for
referring them to me. Prof. Molloy's tutorials have also been helpful, I'll
take a look at Prof Yoder's tutorials. Overall, thanks again for helping.

Thanks for your help... there is obviously something going on under the
covers that I just don't want to invest the time right now to try and
debug. I hope that it is something simple and that someone that has it
working in Angstrom world can help with. Running as root for now as that

[beagleboard] Re: Knee Brace Project planted with 6 Accelerometers and BBB

2013-11-09 Thread TI_University_Program
Hello Zain, I'm no help on the coding, but would like to answer your
question on resources for learning more about BeagleBone Black.
Best place to start is the http://www.beagleboard.org/ getting started
link. Plug in your board first to see the tutorials.
 Both of these books are available via ebook download for low cost: *Bad to
the Bone: Crafting Electronic Systems with BeagleBone and BeagleBone Black
*
*Getting Started with BeagleBone

 *
the second book does more with python.

in addition there are online resources from Prof Yoder *MPU Sitara
BeagleboardXM: 32-Bit Embedded Linux
Course*
and Prof Molloy *Derek Molloy's video series on the Beaglebone and
programming in embedded Linux
*

Sorry I cant be of more help but yes I agree your session is not being
started properly and gvfs should be putting that directory into one for
your user. Or maybe your user is not setup properly either.

I know it works in Arch Linux.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Knee Brace Project planted with 6 Accelerometers and BBB

2013-11-09 Thread Zain Dar
Your right, I can hook up the analog sensors to the analog pins and read
them the normal way. The reason for analog is because when i was assigned
this project, it was already made by other teams who worked on it 2 years
ago. It's an R/D project from the college, but they haven't provided any
info on it from those days, except mentioning that the brace works and the
sensors are operational. I only had to order the BBB and make a program for
it to read those sensors in real time. I chose Python for the sake of
simplicity and i just learned how to make use of the board from it. Its no
problem for those asking out of curiosity, questions are welcome.
Now since there are 7 ADC pins on it, I have 12 wires for the Analog
sensors, each of them with X, Y and Z axis. I'm not sure how I can fit all
of them on the ADC. Is there a way I can use the GPIO pins for any extra
wires left over? if so, then how can i make use of them? in a loop, or a if
statement?

[beagleboard] Re: Can't get BeagleSNES to work on BBB

2013-11-09 Thread Andrew Henderson
Hello Scott. Here are some of the usual problems that I see when people
contact me about BeagleSNES:

1. Did you download the beaglesnes_full.img.bz2 file? Sometimes, people
download one of the other files, which provides a portion of the system or
the source code, rather than the executable image.
2. Did you decompress the BeagleSNES image before you wrote it to the
microSD card? I have had reports from people using my Android image that
if you write the image without decompressing it, you get similar behavior
to what you are reporting.
3. The root filesystem in the image is EXT4, which won't mount under
Windows 7. If you don't have a Linux system to mount the microSD card
under, you'll need to either copy the ROMs over to the BBB via the network
or copy them onto the /boot partition (which mounts under Windows) and then
copy them from the /boot partition into the proper place once you get
BeagleSNES booted.
4. Are you holding down the boot button to force the system to boot off the
microSD card? You DO NOT have to do this. I wrote the uEnv.txt in the
BeagleSNES /boot partition to specify the microSD card device as the boot
device, so you can just pop in the microSD card and it will boot.

A 4 GB microSD card is fine, since I made the image about 3.6 GB in size to
account for slightly smaller microSD cards that advertise themselves as 4
GB.

Your first step is to get the system booted. Then you can add some ROMs.
 If you have written the image properly, it should boot to the game
selection GUI with the placeholder entries in the menu. If you aren't
seeing anything over the FTDI cable with PuTTY when you boot, you probably
are writing the still-compressed image to the microSD card.

Andrew

[beagleboard] compiling kernel 3.12 on beaglebone black?

2013-11-09 Thread Jacob Ole Juul Kolding
Hi

I'd like to try compiling Linux kernel 3.12 for my BBB, but i don't really
know where to start.

Can anyone give me any pointers?

I'd prefer to compile directly on the BBB instead of cross-compiling.

Thanks

/Jacob

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Beaglebone Black freezing, USB related?

2013-11-09 Thread Mike Bremford
I switched up to Kernel 3.12 and that certainly fixed my stability issues
with USB - haven't seen any USB related issues since then, wireless is
fine, 3G modem is fine, everything working. Unfortunately I've lost my
UARTs, but that's a different story and no doubt one that will resolve
itself as more time is spent on getting 3.12 to stable.

Certainly for anyone else having similar USB issues, there's a good chance
kernel 3.8 is the cause and kernel 3.12 is the solution

 Did you ever get a good resolution?

 BTW, on the HDMI console you will probably not see kernel panic
 messages- they are usually brought out only on the serial header, for which
 you will need a 3.3V USB/serial FTDI adapter.
 We also see lots of warnings and USB connect/disconnects in the system
 logs.

can access - mix in a couple of other models (eg MMA7660) or hook them up
via an I2C multiplexer and you can use 6. Digital is so much easier to work
with, not least when it comes to running the wires - 4 (3V3, SCL, SDA, GND)
is better than 4x3=12 for your analogs plus your 4 I2C wires for the others.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Passwordless login to GDM for user other than root

2013-11-09 Thread Will Kostelecky
Don:

Thanks for your advice. First on the parameters. I did try the "auth
sufficient pam_succeed_if.so user ingroup nopasswdlogin " parameter a while
ago and it
did not make any difference. I think whoever did the image for the BBB
used the timed login to make sure some startup stuff completed. Without
it I get a message about something still running (when root is logging
in).

In terms of the logs. The one place where something seems relevant is in
/var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log. It shows some permission problems that
happen with my user and also with the xuser that came as part of the
distribution image.

(gnome-settings-daemon:441): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: cannot
open directory /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors: Error opening
directory '/usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors': Permission denied

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:444): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **:
Unable to determine the session we are in: No session for pid 444
Xlib: extension "DPMS" missing on display ":0".
gdm-simple-greeter[446]: GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING: cannot open
directory /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors: Error opening directory
'/usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors': Permission denied
gdm-simple-greeter[446]: Gtk-WARNING: gtkwidget.c:5709: widget not within a
GtkWindow
shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access
parent directories: Permission denied
gdm-simple-greeter[446]: WARNING: Unable to load CK history: no seat-id
found

I guess that I have been hoping that someone from the BBB team that created
their image would see this post. There is either something wrong with the
scripts behind gdm or I am just missing some key permission or group? I
really, really, really don't want to have to dig into the details of how a
gdm login happens if I don't have to.

Cheers,
Will
