I've attached the zip archive of the handheld directory if anyone wants
to use it. My platform is WHS, but I'm assuming the code is same for
all windows-based platforms and possibly linux-based as well.

 For windows-based systems, install under:
 drive:\Program Files\Squeezebox\server\HTML

 And for linux-based, install under:
 /usr/share/squeezeboxserver/HTML/

I've been using the skin with my Blackberry and haven't run across any
 issues so far.

I know this thread is ancient, but I needed to get an old Blackberry
9900 access to LMS. In short, this worked!!

I'm running LMS 7.7.2. I simply copied the Handheld (and also Mobile)
skin folders back into the skin directory (which on my old QNAP nas, is
/opt/ssods4/var/home/SqueezeboxServer/HTML) and presto. Back in action.
Many thanks Hokie!! :)

No. There are only two Smartphone OSs. Plus some wannabes and some
legacy systems that will go away anyway.

Although you have a point.
Back when I did the iPeng skin it wasn't possible to do a good
smartphone UI using HTML and JavaScript because the browsers were not
up to it, I wonder whether that might have changed until then.

Couldn't the Logitech App's HTML/JS be added to the server as a skin,
too?

I think this could work with a few changes (there's some native code
involved in server detection - which needed to be disabled for this case).
The bigger issue I'm seeing is whether there are any browsers which are
compatible enough outside the iOS/Android world. It's heavily relying on
webkit as a rendering engine.

That about sums it up perfectly I think (though I don't pay attention
enough to M$'s mobile OS to know whether it has a webkit browser or
not). I've even heard RIMs browser is better with standard's compliance
than anything else.

The work for putting the Logi app on those OSes would be in packaging
and distribution to the appropriate app market. That's low hanging
fruit, certainly an order of magnitude less effort than the app code
itself, but it's still an effort. Somebody still has to decide to pick
the fruit to eat it, and as always falls to a management/marketing
decision.

Also Squeezebox is sold in many countries where some of the tech is a

The Handheld skin or a new skin optimized for screens with lower
resolution or slower CPU would probably do a lot better job than the
Classic skin for this use case.

However, the Handheld skin depends on Classic, so if the current
Handheld skin should be supported they would also need the Classic skin
to make it work. I suspect this was the reason why Logitech selected
Default and Classic if they only wanted two skins, the fact that they
support Classic will also make it easier for a third party developer
who like to add a third party version of the Handheld skin.

They gain:

- not having to maintain the code in the extra skins in the future

It isn't just one skin that has been dropped, there are about 8 that
have gone. So they have saved themselves a considerable amount of
effort by dropping them.

On the plus side, someone in the community could update one or more of
the skins to work with 7.6 if they wanted to.

Indeed... and if I had my way, there's a whole load of other stuff that
should be dropped from SBS in order to make the whole thing more robust,
more performant and easier to maintain. I'll post that in another
thread. It won't make me popular... :-)

End the code/feature bloat!

2011-08-01 Thread Phil Meyer
It seemed a strange choice to remove Handheld though, seeing that a lot of the
population these days has smart phones, and there's no Logitech Apps for them.

Handheld was a simple, clean skin that worked well. I wouldn't have thought it
would take much to maintain.

Whereas they are still supporting Default and Classic; surely Default would do,
and support Handheld instead of Classic?

GRUMP!

SBS 7.6 has been released on vortexbox and I've just realised the
handheld skin has disappeared so no more blackberry suitable skin :(

Yeah, I thought it was really bad dropping that skin, but keeping some of the
others. I thought Handheld was really useful; clean interface, fast to use.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Handheld option disappears with SBS 7.6?

2011-07-26 Thread hokie

I ran across the same issue, and went back to re-install an older
version to grab the Handheld skin directory. I simply placed the
folder back under the skin directory, and I'm back up and running with
the lastest 6.0 release.

But the HANDHELD skin was supported and delivered with first builds of
7.6: this problem only appears a few days ago when upgrading SBS.
slate directed you to the appropriate link. Also note that the first
builds of 7.6 came out well over a year ago. The 'onebrowser' work made
its way into 7.6 a few months ago, and that's when all the other skins
got the axe. Maybe you hadn't updated 7.6 since then.

As I've understood, only the Default and Classic skins are officially
supported in 7.6, the reason is that Logitech don't have (or don't want
to) provide the resources needed to update and maintain all skins
available in 7.5.

The other skins can still be provided by third party developers if
there is an interest and someone is willing to update them to work with
7.6. If someone updates them and tests them, I suspect Logitech might
even be willing to include them in the 7.6 distribution.

Again see http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85895

AWY is the developer working on the OneBrowser cleanup/redesign
branch.
The 7.6.0 nightlies have been built on this track for two months now. I
am not sure when the skins was actually removed from the distribution.

Note that it was originally stated that if the OneBrowser does not
reach an acceptable functionality level it will not be part of 7.6.0.

In the two months many bugs have been plugged but I am not sure what
the state is in regards to OneBrowser being part of the final 7.6.0.
