Observers:Michael Williamson

Visitors:
Mike joined my for most of the day. Jim McCoy showed up briefly with his
wife, but they didn't brave the cold too long.

Weather:
Very strong and chilly southwesterly winds with dense cloudy skies. The
weather man said it felt like 0°C (32°F), but it was clear that he wasn't
on the tower as it certainly felt colder than that. We moved down to the
second level around 11am local time to escape from a brief smattering of
rain, and stayed down for the rest of the day harboring from the winds.

Raptor Observations:
Two light Roughies were the first non-Turkey Vultures of the day. Quite a
good flight for Vultures in the morning, with 925 being counted in the
first hour. The flight was pretty much dead at noon, with only 52 Vultures
and 11 other raptors being counted in the last 3.5 hours.

Non-raptor Observations:
44 Tree Swallows were counted flying west. Two flocks of Cedar Waxwings
went by, totaling 55 birds. Full eBird checklist follows:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40222865?share=true

Predictions:
Strong west winds tomorrow, with a chance of snow/rain in the morning.

Visitors:
We had various visitors to the tower today with a few regulars who spent
all or part of the day with me. Dan Lumm, his sister Paula from Waterford
MI and Chuck Sharbaugh also from MI spent the day with me...Thanks so much
for all your help in keeping track of the migrants who seemed to claim no
real flight path--but were coming from both sides and up the middle.

Weather:
Complete cloud cover today with chilly temperatures and light winds from
the W in the morning, shifting between WNW and NW later in the day.
Temperatures ranged from 5.4C to 7.8C, winds were never over 5.5 kmph.

Raptor Observations:
Our resident Bald Eagles were in the marsh this morning, one of the adults
swooped low and grabbed a small duck of some sort and flew off while Chuck
and I watched. Also present today was the Osprey which has been hanging
around. A nice all around day for migrating hawks with 11 species
migrating through. Only one Golden Eagle today very distant to the
north...thanks to Dan for finding this in the spotting scope!

Non-raptor Observations:
Mixed Blackbird flocks were moving in big numbers early in the day (1470).
A few groups of Blue Jays (80)moved through early, and some large American
Crow flocks (1229) filled out the afternoon. We still had both
Ruby-crowned, and Golden-crowned Kinglets in the shrubs around the tower.
One Yellow-rumped Warbler was noted as well.

Predictions:
Weather will be much the same for tomorrow, but no N component to the wind
predicted

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Alcid...NO

2017-10-30 Thread Jon Ruddy via ONTBIRDS
No further updates to report. Multiple observers birded the river from 1:30
PM until sunset. As an FYI, my brain quickly "set" on Thick-billed
Murre/Razorbill when I first observed it, but that doesn't mean much given
the distance to the subject, the very strong west winds shaking my optics
and the sizeable surf engulfing the bird anytime it hit the water, resting
from brief periods of flight. I didn't consider all the options while first
wrestling with the ID of "Alcid sp" and had no possibility to get down to
the nitty gritty of actually identifying the beast given the conditions.

Cheers

Re: [Ontbirds] American Avocet, Brant - Bracebridge Lagoons

2017-10-30 Thread ROBERT BOWLES via ONTBIRDS
The bird was still there at 3:00 p.m. today but being flushed often. I was able
to watch it flying over the cell with my spotting scope set up out of the rain
under the shelter of the observation deck at the brow of the hill.

As of 10:30 a.m. this morning, Oct. 30, the Avocet was still in cell 2, but no
Brant.  Note that conditions have changed dramatically since yesterday.  The
south beach in cell 2 is shrinking rapidly as they are refilling the cell and
there is a strong northwest wind.  Also, a very large waste truck was making
multiple trips along the middle road, flushing all the birds each time it
passed.  The Avocet kept returning to the south end of cell 2, but many of the
ducks headed off to the southwest.

Could be seen from viewing stand at Kerr Park with scope (if bird not too close
to north shore), or near middle intersection of main three cells if enter via
Lagoon Lane.  You do not need a permit to enter the Lagoons on foot.  The
Lagoon Lane gate is left open for Sewage Truck access only...please don't drive
through and don't park too close to the gate as some of the trucks need to make
a wide turn.

From Toronto take Hwy. 400 north to Hwy. 11 north.  Take southern exit into
Bracebridge from Hwy. 11 at Hwy. 118. Turn left onto Hwy. 118W.  Turn left onto

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Alcid species

2017-10-30 Thread Jon Ruddy via ONTBIRDS
I just located a very distant species of Alcid on the Ottawa River. It was
flying from east to west, first seen near Britannia Pier then straight out
from Andrew Haydon east (ie the "fulmar spot") It landed in the surf and I
have not refound it. Time of observation was 1:20 PM

Directions: Andrew Haydon Park is accessed via Carling Ave. walk to east
end of park and scan out in surf of Ottawa River
