[blfs-dev] Firefox needs gconf

2015-10-05 Thread Pierre Labastie
Hi,

When upgrading to Firefox 41.0, the build failed with:
---
configure: error: * * * Could not find gconf-2.0
---
Actually, the behavior has changed for FF 41, see:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1167201

There are two possibilities:
a) Add --disable-gconf to mozconfig
b) Make gconf a recommended dependency

Thoughts?

The definition we use for gconf is : contains a configuration database
system used by many GNOME applications.

Does FF need that? I suspect not. My reaction is to put gconf into the
optional dependencies and use --disable-gconf in the mozconfig file.

Has FF been tested without gconf?

Same goes for thunderbird, btw. Has been mentioned by several people
before, but strangely still didn't make it into the book.

Have you registered at http://wiki.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/? If so
what id did you use?

Note that if you want to do tickets for blfs, that is a separate
registration.

Yes, I'm running it withouth gconf for a week now, without any problems.
Same for thunderbird.

First, I didn't do the update, but I defend who did it.

Tim, we are not perfect, who did the update probably was expecting me to
do it and didn't took note of the problem.

The only strange thing is your use of "strange"; Unfortunately, or no
adverb at all would have been nore fortunate use of words.

I don't think it is going to help us in any way. I have gconf, always,
because update gnome.

I vote for option a).

As you often say, Bruce, we are in -dev. Cam't believe that firefox
would become or remain definitely dependent as required on gconf2.

BTW, wherever does the modification, it ould be done in the three: FF,
TB, SM

And please, remove from mosconfig libnotify.

What to do with libnotify in the dependencies, remains to be decided,
for the three, All indicatess until now it is broken, but if not, woulf
be optional, runtime.

Sorry for my wording, then, if that is considered offensive. Just really
sursprised me that all the rest like the sqlite change and the system cairo
stuff went in, but not the gconf issue that started the whole thread on ff
41.0. That's why I put the strange there, maybe just me being paranoid.

During a freeze period before a release, we are primarily testing the
book's instructions for build and basic operation. We don't test for
every possible dependency. If a dependency does not do something, it
will probably be missed.

The best way to ensure something is looked at is to create a ticket. We
do not release with open tickets in the target's milestone.

We have had problems with spam in tickets in the past, so getting
privileges is a manual operation, but all you have to do is ask me.

Mea culpa. I *thought* I had put that into the mozconfig. I
suppose I checked that system cairo was commented (a last-minute
decision), and overlooked this earlier change.

Have they fixed that part where a file that is being downloaded can not
be played continuously?

In previous versions of MPlayer, if you have the start of a file
downloaded, you could start playing it, and as the new data was being
downloaded, the playback would continue through the area that didn't
exist when it started. Then, about 3 years ago, that feature went away
so now you have to restart the playback when you consume the part of
the file that existed when you started playing. If they brought it
back, all will be forgiven.

Maybe a bit unrelated but I can highly recommend mpv instead of mplayer.
It's basically the successor to mplayer and mplayer2. It also links
against a recent ffmpeg, has fixed the strange mplayer syntax command
line options, can use all available hardware acceleration like vdpau,
libva, etc.

I also can recommend mpv, but only as an addition instead of a
replacement of mplayer, as it does not include something like mencoder.

mencoder is still the best choice when it comes to automated
creation/conversion of movie files.

Kind regards
Tim
