[BlindHandyMan] RESump pumps

2007-04-16 Thread Robert J. Moore
I am fermiliar with sump pumps and basically how they work but I don't know
any thing about the out put side, do they usually just run a pipe out the
wall?
As I was reading Scott's post about this I had a thought. Why couldn't a
line be run from the sump basket up the wall and out and then hook up a
spout that has threads on it so you could just hook up a garden hose and run
it where ever you want. For example you could run it into a naybors
basement.
OK well maybe not some one elses basement but seriously you could run it to
a low spot in the yard or into a storm system or what ever works best in
your case. Is this method already used? If not Why don't they do this?

You know what amazes me is that with all the technological
advancements that have been made in construction, why hasn't someone
come up with a basement that doesn't leak. Something that could be
placed in the hole before the basement is poored. Something like a
type of plastic liner perhaps or along those lines. I guess its less
expensive to use block when poor concrete over it, but again, is that
to save money or does it offer some advantages a totally poored
concrete basement or is there such a thing? Well its been raining
like hell for the last 8 or so hours. So, if this puppy is gonna
leak, its gonna be over the next couple of days. We're to get 1 to 3
inches of rain.
Btw, here's another aside from all this cracked foundation bit. Why
in the hell do builders install sump-pumps and just bring the outlet
about six inches from the house. Doesn't it make sense that this
dumps water right back at the point where it will drain back in? I
surely don't understand the logic. So, that will be another project
and no, these issues aren't near eachother or related.

What I did, Dug a hole to the back of the lot and put in a 3 inch perforated
plastic flexible pipe. I only went about a foot down and I am in a cold region
where the temperature drops to below -0 F.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] RESump pumps

2007-04-16 Thread Dale Leavens
That is exactly what people do much of the time only the outlet hose is
bigger, I think it is inch and a quarter. You would usually take it some
distance down hill from your home. It is probably forbidden to drop the end
of the hose into a storm sewer but you could probably end it in a gutter.

If your sewer lines are adequate ... but that too is most likely not legal
and in a real storm situation might even back up.

[BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-16 Thread Dan Rossi
Anybody know where I can get a board stretcher? I was cutting some trim
pieces this weekend and even though I specifically cut them long so I
could trim them to length. Somehow, seemingly impossibly, a couple of the
boards mysteriously shrunk after I cut them. I swear! I took a board
that was half an inch too long, cut an eighth off of it, and ended up with a
board half an inch too short. Don't ask me how. Hell, I was so impressed
that I couldn't even get mad.

[BlindHandyMan] Dan's mystery measurements

Dan,

Keep those tape measure gremlins on your side of the fence.
I am in the process of fabbing up some front end panels for
my girlfriend's Corvette and I don't need those guys hanging
around my shop.

BTW the sledge hammer idea sounds like the perfect solution.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-16 Thread Robert J. Moore
Dan
On a more serious note.
Would it be practicle to cut your Too short board in half and then cut a ?
inch piece off of a scrap piece and after you have all three pieces together
and nailed to the wall, use some type of wood filler and apply the finnesh.
Question then would be, Are you going to paint this trim or put on some
other type of finnish. If you plan to paint I think this would work but if
you are wanting to keep the wood grain then I don't know weather it would
work or not.

we got flooded here twice yesterday. First time it was the common for 3
houses. The second time, I was thinking it was the same, but was (what
turned out to be) a wig sized clump of mud/grass/eck in the vertical at
the base of the driveway.
We were dumping shopvac tanks down the main drive 25gal at a time.

distance down hill from your home. It is probably forbidden to drop the end
of the hose into a storm sewer but you could probably end it in a gutter.

If your sewer lines are adequate ... but that too is most likely not legal
and in a real storm situation might even back up.

I am fermiliar with sump pumps and basically how they work but I don't know
any thing about the out put side, do they usually just run a pipe out the
 wall?
As I was reading Scott's post about this I had a thought. Why couldn't a
line be run from the sump basket up the wall and out and then hook up a
spout that has threads on it so you could just hook up a garden hose and
 run
it where ever you want. For example you could run it into a naybors
 basement.
OK well maybe not some one elses basement but seriously you could run it
 to
a low spot in the yard or into a storm system or what ever works best in

Robert,

Yeah, nice idea about just stringing a few pieces together. Sadly, I am
too smart for my own good. In an effort to avoid any kind of finishing, I
purchased trim boards that exactly match the stain and wood of the hard
wood floor. awfully nice of the flooring manufacturers to make it so
easy. However, it doesn't allow for covering up screw-ups with paint.

I will say that my mitered corners are damn sweet. Unfortunately, they
just don't reach all the way across. *GRIN*

Actually, one of the sliding bevel jobs I got from Lee Valley was
amazingly useful. It has two rectangles, pivoted in the middle. You
push
it into, or around, a corner and that gives you the exact template of the
corner. But even cooler is that there is a little fin in the middle, on
top of the rectangles, that is geared to the rectangles and bisects the
angle for you. Just line up one of the legs, to your saw fence, and the
saw blade to the fin, and you will cut the perfect mitre.

the only problem with my miters is that the ends touch perfectly, but
there is a hairline gap in the middle of the mitre. I believe what is
happening is that the outer edges of the T board are thin, and the middle
is thick. Possibly the saw blade since it has to work harder to pass
through the thicker part of the board, it leaves a slightly wider kerf.
Not sure that is reasonable, but I'm sticking with it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Board stretcher.

2007-04-16 Thread Dale Leavens
Dan,

Are the inside corners similarly open or are you coping them as you are
supposed to do?

Do they also provide you with a little touch-up colour? often the experts
colour the inside of the cut before bringing them together, small gaps are
then much less visible.

My guess though is that the back surface of the trim isn't exactly square to
the bottom. You are expected to leave a small gap between the bottom rear
edge of the trim and the wall. Because you don't leave that gap against the
rear of the fence on the saw when cutting the angle is off by that fraction.

Anyway, don't look too closely, you'll find most are much worse this is not
cabinetry.

My goodness man! 25 gallons of water is one hell of a weight! Even your

I would hustle out quick and get me a sump pump, they aren't all that

Re: [BlindHandyMan] New plumbling project starts this week

2007-04-16 Thread Scott Howell
This project sounds really interesting. I'll post a question
separately as to not trash this thread, but I'm very interested in
how this process works out.
I do have one question pertaining to this thread. I know there's PEX,
CPVC, and some other type of plastic if you will pipe. I know my
folks have PEX throughout their house and its really cool. They have
this block if you will where the mains come into the house and then
everything is fed from there to each fixture in the house. How do you
get from coper from the street or should I say from the wall to PEX?
I imagine there's a special fitting and as far as tools, I gather you
crimp the fittings? How is this done as to not crack them and so forth.
Any suggested reading material would be appreciated.
I have coper in my house and have been toying with the idea of slowly
replacing or gathering the materials to do a replacement myself. Of
course it may be a all or nothing job.

tnx

Scott

[BlindHandyMan] replacing water supply valves

2007-04-16 Thread Scott Howell
Folks, here's another issue I need to deal with.

We have this 2 by 4 foot hole in the wall where one accesses the
water meter and shutoff valves. Here's the deal, I want to shrink
the hole a good bit and this would also please my wife. So what I
want to do is remove the two old gate valves which aren't really
leaking, but if you turn them off, they tend to drip and well they
are getting a lot of settament built up on them. I figure they are
gonna faile and yes they do, I had this happen in my previous home.
Well the idea is to replace these with ball-valves which are nearly
fail proof. So, since I don't swet pipes and not sure if I could do
it or explain to my wife how to do it, I was wondering if first would
it be code (I live in Maryland) or could it be up to code to use
compression fittings and secondly would it be a wise idea to begin with.
My other thought is while I'm thinking about all this, I may look to
a pipe replacement project at some point, either a little at a time
or might go all out. I'm considering PEX or some similar material and
so would need to mate this with coper since I'm working from the main
line into the house and the meter has a valve on either side and of
course its all coper.
Any thought appreciated.

tnx

Re: [BlindHandyMan] replacing water supply valves

2007-04-16 Thread Dale Leavens
Well, the first thing you will need to do if changing the main shut-off
valve is to have the water turned off at the street. After that code takes
over but I had one fail several years ago, actually what happened was the
Plummer over tightened the waste cap so when I released it to drain water
from my system it flew off and another could not be installed because it was
the male thread which was gone which left me with nothing to do but turn off
the main. I was able to isolate some of the house and feed water through the
outside taps and hoses to my neighbour's house. Of course it happened on a
Saturday night because that was when I was doing the work. The town sent a
fellow around in the morning to locate the cock at the back lane which he
managed to break but fortunately in the off position. I had then to wait
until Monday to get a back hoe to excavate to the water main and instal
another valve out there in the lane. In the meantime the fellow who owns our
local hardware store opened it Sunday morning and got me a new shut-off
valve which I sweated in to replace the old. I only wish too that it had
been a ball valve, I don't know if that is code though.

Our water here isn't metered yet although there is some talk of it recently.

What you do after the meter though is probably your business. I believe that
any fittings underground though must be flare fittings and it is a flare
fitting here just before the first indoor shut-off. I know because i removed
it to sweat it off of the damaged valve and back on the new valve. I
couldn't just cut it off because I didn't have the tools to create a new
flare and at that point didn't fancy buying them because I wasn't sure the
municipality would pick up the cost of replacing the one in the ground and
this money saving plumbing job was suddenly looking at getting very
expensive.

That box arrangement you were speaking of is called a manifold. Because of
the cost and relative ease of running individual PEX to each location and
with fewer joints and often longer sweeps of curves it is practical to use
slightly smaller pipe directly to each fixture. One advantage is that it is
easier to isolate any individual fixture. With smaller hot water tubes there
is less standing hot water in the pipe so the water runs hot sooner and less
heat is lost standing in the pipe.

Another technique is to run branch manifolds where maybe you run a line to a
bathroom then break it out into multiple branches to service the fixtures
there, another to the laundry and so on.Of course the standard trunk method
is also still used.

I did find a wonderful site with little video clips and text transcriptions
of the audio of those clips last night which I had intended to bookmark and
send along but inadvertently lost it while distracted to something else. If
I find it again I will do better.

Dear Robert:
Your idea is much quicker than the method I was about to suggest. I have
had wood to swell when soaked in water. My thought was to soak the board for a
few weeks, and when it reached the desired length, quickly fasten it in place.
Any shrinkage thereafter should bring the walls with it.

Anybody know where I can get a board stretcher? I was cutting some trim

could trim them to length. Somehow, seemingly impossibly, a couple of the

that was half an inch too long, cut an eighth off of it, and ended up with a

[BlindHandyMan] Pipe Bluing Clamps

2007-04-16 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi All

I recently put together a flat pack kitchen unit and borrowed some pipe
gluing clamps, I found them to be great so decided to make some.
I first checked out what large sash clamps were available but found them
to be expensive $34 just for one.
I bought a set of pipe gluing clamps these have a 3/4 BSP thread in one
end and screw onto a 3/4 pipe and the pair cost $17.95.
I picked up the pipe for nothing it however is black pipe not
galvanised.
I cleaned the pipe up using emery paper and painted on a rust converter
sealer and I am using a epoxy paint to finish them off.
I made them six feet long and was going to cut them up making a pair 4
feet and a pair 2 feet but my son said why not keep them that long, they
are completely adjustable with a screw handle one end and the jaw slides
along the pipe at the other end then locks off at the desired length
required.
If I get into a position where the six foot length is to long I can cut
them off quickly with my steel cut off machine.
So with a little effort I now have my own which should last for a long
time.
Ray

Hi Clifford,

I like to tinker with old pickups. And I'm always getting myself into

lost my vision 5 years ago, i owned a small landscape company. I took my

Re: [BlindHandyMan] New plumbling project starts this week

2007-04-16 Thread Scott Berry
My father runs PVC plastic piping through his house. PVC is a pain for one
reason because you have to glue ends together and you need to make sure your
elbows are exactly straight. We use plastic pipe glue, plastic pipe cleaner
and we also use emory cloth to clean the insides of the pipes when putting them
together. In fact, I just finished putting my second pump together last
Saturday and our galvanized steel pipe did not fgit the pipe collar going down
to thewater source. So we went to town and picked up some clearsilocone
caulking and we caulked the pipe and that seemed to bring the water pressure up
from 0 psi to 50 psi. We allowed the caulking to set twenty four hours as
General Electric states.

Of
course it may be a all or nothing job.

  tnx

  Scott

I was corrected that it is a 15gal unit.
It was heavy enough that it took two of us to pour it into a sink, did
that a few times.
After that, bro in law (6'4 250) was just shoving it onto it's side at
the union to the common drive.

 know
any thing about the out put side, do they usually just run a pipe out
 the
 wall?
As I was reading Scott's post about this I had a thought. Why couldn't a
line be run from the sump basket up the wall and out and then hook up a
spout that has threads on it so you could just hook up a garden hose and
 run
it where ever you want. For example you could run it into a naybors
 basement.
OK well maybe not some one elses basement but seriously you could run it
 to
a low spot in the yard or into a storm system or what ever works best in

Anybody know where I can get a board stretcher? I was cutting some trim
pieces this weekend and even though I specifically cut them long so I
could trim them to length. Somehow, seemingly impossibly, a couple of the
boards mysteriously shrunk after I cut them. I swear! I took a board
that was half an inch too long, cut an eighth off of it, and ended up with
 a
board half an inch too short. Don't ask me how. Hell, I was so impressed
that I couldn't even get mad.

 Ah, the joys of D I Y.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] replacing water supply valves

2007-04-16 Thread chiliblindman
Hello Scott. I'll try to answer some of your questions. The new water meters
come with compression fittings. Like in your parents house, they have a
manifold to distribute the water. Copper can be connected right to it using
the double seal compression fitting.
I got my line in from my main to the water softener with a ball valve, but
not connected today. I got the line from the softener (with ball valve)back to
the main and connected to the manifold using a pliers and wrench, one each. I
got the bypass valve in so water is available with the softener still not
connected. I ran my cold line from the manifold to my hot water heater and
installed an expansion tank between the two. That is now operating.
Tomorrow I'll run the hot back to the manifold and start running the pex.
A bag of fittings came with the manifold to make the connections. I ran one
pex today from a tee before the line to the softener. My handy sink in the
basement and outdoor spigots will all use untreated water.
Around here pex meets all standards that copper does. The only tools
needed to run pex are the crimp tool. I would suggest a plastic pipe cutter,
the cuts are always nice unlike when using a knife. I have no worries about
cutting myself using the pipe cutter.
The pipe here comes in three colors, red for hot, blue for cold and white
for whatever. The pipe is all the same except for the color. I am using them
so anyone will be able to tell the hot from the cold. Maybe I'll use white for
my unconditioned water points. All the fittings I used so far are quite easy
to understand. The copper lines do need to be cleaned and I remove the inside
burr from the indentation from the cutting wheel. Fittings will last twice as
long or longer if the edge is removed inside the copper pipe where the cutting
wheel presses in on the pipe during the cutting process. I use a pocket knife
to remove them, the smaller blades will just slide around the pipe and remove
the edge very easily with a little practice. One tends to try and force it and
that isn't needed.
I had checked on the pressure ratings for these fittings, 120 psi is what
they take. My water pressure here is 80 almost so I am running at less than 66
per cent of the limit. Time to call it a day.bob

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Pipe Bluing Clamps

2007-04-16 Thread Dale Leavens
You are fortunate to have the pipe for free. When you add the cost of new
black iron pipe they become actually quite expensive. They are heavy too,
mind you mine are three quarters inch pipe which must be nearly an inch
outside diameter.

One other advantage is that you can always have extra lengths of pipe and
convert your supply of clamp heads to a variety of clamp lengths.

When clamping boards edge-to-edge take care to alternate the pipe clamps on
opposite faces as they tend to cause the boards to bow away from the pipe
side unless balanced from the other side. The force isn't exactly at right
angles to the long direction of the pipes.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Pipe Bluing Clamps

So with a little effort I now have my own which should last for a long
 time.
 Ray

Hi Dale

Yes, I am lucky I got the pipe free the bloke that lives behind me has
a metal fabrication business and these pieces of pipe were left over's
from another job.
It is really handy to have this outlet so close, where I can pick up
pieces of steel free.
