The line itself didn't explode, the end blew out of the fitting that screwed on to the bottom of the tank. If I had put the line on with a wrench or pliers I'd take the blame. But, I only put it on by hand and I didn't put the force to it. It worked fine for about 2 years I guess it was and then it started dripping one day. The next day it came apart. I replaced it with the braided style this time. I normally carry a couple of the braided lines in my plumbing box but for some reason I didn't have one handy when I replaced the toilet. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Connecting your Lap Top to Your Television
Ray, Thanks much mate. The more I look into this, the more I think it is just better to hard wire a laptop to the TV. The devices to wirelessly transmit the SVideo signal seem to range from $189 up to about $300. At that point, it is a better solution to buy a cheap laptop and a wireless keyboard. It gives more options overall. Looks like I've got yet another project on my todo list, right behind finishing the basement, rehabbing the kitchen, the bathroom, the dining room. Insulating the house, doing some rewiring before insulating. And, continuing my investigations of hydronic under floor radiant heating. I should have it all wrapped up by June. *GRIN* -- Blue skies. RE: [BlindHandyMan] toilet supply line exploded
Lenny, I have been using the braided toilet fill hoses for years, on about 35 toilets on rental property and have never experienced a rupture. I am referring to the hoses, which are sold practically everywhere, including Lowes and Home Depot. These are actually rubber or man made flexible polymer hoses, which are covered with a stainless steel braid, to help keep the hose from ballooning and rupturing. They are available in quite a variety of hose length sizes as well as different sizes at the valve fitting end, depending on which size valve you may have. While on the subject of valves, I would also recommend the ball valves, instead of the usual globe type valves that have been used for years. The ball valves turn on an off with a quarter turn and are much less prone to leaking at the stem. If the type of hose you were using is the one described above, and it ruptured, you must havgotten a hold of one with a serious factory defect or one that was damaged somehow. -Original Message- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:blindhandy...@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Lenny McHugh Sent: Tuesday, January 05, 2010 4:33 PM To: handyman-blind Subject: [BlindHandyMan] toilet supply line exploded My daughter has a major mess in her home. Yes you can drill and put screws in plastic wood. But in case of the chair no it will not stand that kind of pressure. I once repaired the leg of a swivel chair. I mean the part where the caster shaft goes in. The wood had broken away around the hole. The previous owner had tried to glue the original pieces back and that lasted about 5 seconds. I bought it off him for 5 dollars. I completely cut away the damaged wood making straight smooth cuts. Then I got a block of the same kind of wood and glued it in place. Then I planed and sanded it down to be smooth and drilled a new hole for the caster shaft. I sold it several years ago for 25 dollars and as far as I know it is still holding together. I didn't take the final step of finishing the added piece to match but it could be done and with care it should be invisible. Your situation is very different than mine because your break is in a highly visible area and on something that must be made to look as good as new. Regards. Max. K 4 O D S. Now this filled in place will be visible when the fall board is raised. So my question, or two questions are; 1. what do I need to fill in this place to be strong enough to drill a pilot whole and put a screw in? 2. Will touch up pencels work to cover the newly replaced surface, allowing I can get the right color

[BlindHandyMan] My toDo list.
Ah yes, June of what year. That is the question. I should get back to work on the basement floor soon. I think I can get the 2X4 joistish pieces in place pretty quickly, but cutting all the blocking to prop up the joists is going to be kind of tedious. Once that is done, I don't expect it will take too long to lay down some rigid foam insulation between the joists, and then lay down the 3/4 plywood sheeting. Then the walls will go up and I will have to rip out the basement stairs and replace them as they are rather damaged from a termite infestation from many years ago. The insulation in the main walls of the house, I will probably have done professionally, but not sure yet. Before I do the insulation though, I need to at least run some conduit from the basement to the attic, if not actually just do the rewiring first. The kitchen project is really out there by a couple of years, simply because it will be an expensive one. All those new appliances and cabinetry can get kind of pricy. The hydronic under floor radiant heat idea is just a dream. I read about it every now and then, but know that it would end up being a huge job. The problem is that I would have to separate the first floor and second floor into two zones, and sadly, the pipes are comingled, so a big job to separate everything out. So that project will remain a, excuse the pun, pipe dream for quite a while. I do expect to have the basement done, except for the bathroom, by the summer. If it weren't for this pesky job, I could have it done a lot sooner. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University. E-Mail: d...@andrew.cmu.edu Tel:(412) 268-9081

RE: [BlindHandyMan] My toDo list.
Dan, You are right, those darn jobs can get in the way (smile) Al -Original Message- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:blindhandy...@yahoogroups.com]on Behalf Of Dan Rossi Sent: Wednesday, January 06, 2010 1:29 PM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: [BlindHandyMan] My toDo list. [BlindHandyMan] water supply repaired
Well, my son-in-law replaced the supply line. He told me that he could not turn off the water below the toilet and had to run down to the basement to shut it off. So today I put a few tools in a tool bag and walked over to replace the stop. I decided not to do any of the work but to talk him through it so he could learn. I had him remove the supply line and the old stop. Fortunately it was threaded and not sweated. I then sent him to the hardware store to purchase a ball valve, he returned with what they called a quarter turn stop. Basically the same thing but has a handle like the old stops. He had to also get a nipple since the old stop was male and the new one female. I gave him some Teflon tape and told him how to wrap the threads. After everything was done there was a small drip. So back down to turn the water off and removed the valve. All of the Teflon tape was pushed back. I had him rewrap and again put on the new valve. This one worked with no drips. I did have one startling moment. The tub faucet is very close to the toilet. After he turned off the water he opened the tub faucet. I was standing back and when he first turned on the water I heard the rush. I was afraid to look at the floor. I did not recheck his work and thought that there was water going everywhere. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. RE: [BlindHandyMan] toilet supply line exploded
I bought a new supply line recently, and there were different quality brands on display, that simply said, good, better, best. Maybe we ought to buy the better or best. Blessings, Tom [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
