RE: [BlindHandyMan] Frozen car hood
Otis Here are a couple of things to consider. If this is an older car and you are not too conserned about the finnish of the paint I would go around the front and the sides and just give it a good pop with the side of your fist. This should break up the ice. If you have time you could go out with a hair drier and warm it up. My next question would be do you need to open the hood to jump the car or will it start and you need to check ththe oil? If it will start, just run it until. The hood warms up. Once you get it open I would spray the latch with some thing that is known to repel moisture. Do not use lock deicer or any such thing that has alcohol in it. Maybe some one els has a sugjestion for lubricant. I am thinking some thing like silicon. Or the like. IF all else fails wait until spring and I asure you it will open just fine. -Original Message- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Otis Blue Sent: Friday, February 09, 2007 11:43 AM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Frozen car hood Hi everyone, Well I just ran into a problem with my car. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Frozen car hood
Hi Otis, Try tapping the front of the hood where the area of the latch would be with the palm of your hand, This will sometimes dislodge the latch and allow for it to pop. Don't be afraid to use some force on it, as it might take some force to break what ever is keeping the latch from unsticking. The problem is that you don't know if it's frozen or if it's rusted . Either way, that tapping should be able to release it enough that it'll pop. If you find that it won't budge, even after you've pounded it several times, try taking a blow dryer on it's hottest setting to the front of the hood, followed by some well pointed hot air through the front grill, aiming in an upward direction to see if you can release it. Another option is using a key de-icer on it. You can get these at any service station or hardware store. They often come with a small straw that you can insert in the groove where the latch is. Spray a liberal amount of the de-icer into the space with the straw and if it is frozen, this should work to melt it. If this doesn't work, try the WD-40 option spraying a liberal amount into the groove. Hope this helps. Hi, This is a 1998 Buick Century. The latch in side of the car is just a handle that you pull to pop the hood. My step father just went out there and used a screw driver to pull the latch that locks the hood to the side and the hood popped open. But the handle that's in side of the car still feels like it's kind of hard to pull. Otis Blue [EMAIL PROTECTED] BBS Press Service, Inc. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Frozen car hood
As I said spray the latch mechanism with some lubricant and also make sure you spray the cable where it comes out of the casing to try to get the lubricant down inside the cable. Yu might want to do this several times over the next few days . once you have sprayed it good, gently work the handle back and forth several times to make sure the spray lubricant gets worked in good to the entire mechanism. The one thing you don't want to spray on it is WD40, it is a petroleum base product and it will attract dust from the air. There are a number of really good synthetic based spray lubricants on the market and any of them will work well for you.
