It's true that we are more liberal wrt sexuality than other parts of the

to think it is. There is some gay bashing, and gay students spend hell

I thought that we had that name for some short time in the past,
but a google search helped me.

When the Emperor was deposed on 1889-11-15, the name of the
military g*vernment was "Governo Provisório da República dos
Estados Unidos do Brasil" [do I have to translate? :-)]. Then, until
1967, it was "Estados Unidos do Brasil". In 1967, we changed
to "Republica Federativa do Brasil".

It can't - it would be politically incorrect, and now the g*vernment is
enforcing political correctedness in every document. For example,
"homosexualism" is a banned word, because it was defined by some
UNO health sub-organization as a disease; the correct word is
"homosexuality".

That's because Brazil is comfortable with its sexuality, of course.
It's not a nation overrun with people who had experiences with one
another at boy scout camps, and who are forever after sure that, deep
down inside, they're all "faggitz", and must therefore do everything in

And, of course, the more the merrier.

The voting machine has three buttons below the
numerical keyboard: [Blank] [Correct] [Confirm]

So, you have the explicit option to vote [Blank], and then
[Confirm] it.

Or you can enter an invalid number (say, 00 for
President). It will tell you that you are voting
"spoiled" ("null"), but you can [Confirm] it anyway.

So, those 10.7% are people that _chose_ to invalidate
the vote.

Is that anything like giving them a way to vote for "None of the
Above"? (I.e., "I want to do my civic duty and vote, but I don't want any
of these idiots and/or crooks.") If so, what happens if "None of the

Or does it mean that their vote doesn't count, just as if they stayed home?

Tried it again in Netscape (v6.2) with same result - nothing in the
window of the voting device, and no response to button presses on the
keypad of the device. Cleared cache etc, tried from home and work etc
all to no avail. Works fine for me in Konqueror and IE as well, but
failed in Mozilla on both Linux and Windows.

Ahh - the joys of the ongoing browser wars...

Shouldn't the instructions be in Arabic (Persian?)? ;-)

Brazilian officials said the new system also makes tallying the vote
easier and more reliable once the polls have closed. Instead of
relying on election judges who are vulnerable to error or political

capital and then to a national center in Brasília.

So now instead of corrupting/buying/blackmailing a bunch of returning
officers around the country, you only need to influence one or two
system administrators at head office - now that's efficient!

So, those 10.7% are people that _chose_ to invalidate
the vote.

There's a Java Applet to simulate the vote at...

How can you have a "blank" or "spoiled" ballot on the computer? Doesn't
it check to make sure that you recorded at least one vote, and that you
didn't mess anything up? What accounted for the 10.7 percent?
