All is (relatively) good now with the rotor…turns out it was a connection issue

to redo it. After some troubleshooting from the resistance chart in the TT
manual, I found one line to be open. It is working now. Who said that manuals
are useless!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I did order a cap as a spare, so cheap.

FYI, SteppIR project is coming along, almost finished. I plan to swap out the
TT rotor on the tower as the current one has a dirty pot. I have made some
modifications to the SteppIR which are almost finished:

   - Replaced one loop element and added another one for D2 to provide 2
elements on 30 and 40 meters (effectively converts it to a DB-32). Parts came
from Bill Bayard AK5WB who’s tower failed in high winds and who gave me what
was left of his DB-18E.
   - Repainted all elements with marine grade non-metallic paint to protect the
fiberglass from the sun.
   - All EHUs (stepper motors) have been rebuilt and tested on the ground at
least 30-40 times.
   - Added a fixed 6 meter reflector and repositioned other 6 meter passive
elements based on NEC calculations from a friend. Interesting, I learned that
with long boom antennas, directors start to get longer rather than shorter. I
didn’t know that.
   - Moved the counterweight from D2 to the EHU reflector due to addition of
new and heavier hardware on the front end of the boom.
   - Added new “split loom” Kellems Grip to support the cable bundle from the
top of the tower.

Antenna party to be scheduled soon! Can’t wait to get it up now with these
improved sunspot and solar flux numbers!

I will be posting this to any groups via Facebook in the East Texas area. Please
tell anyone wishing to buy and or sell gear. Our talk in frequencywill be the

It has been an unbelievable Field Day so far. We have hit and surpassed so many
points from last year it will be next to impossible to ever beat them.

So far we have exceeded 10, 000 points! A new record for the Quad Club Mega
Field Day event! Thanks to all who worked hard on getting the contacts.

Extra bonus points are always helpful and yesterday is no exception. We had a
bonus points just drop from the sky when the Fort Bend County Sheriff flew in
on the department helicopter. Too bad we don’t get extra points for the mode of
travel.

We had over 100 people attend the event on Saturday. From Boy Scouts to several
elected officials to University of Texas at Arlington Director of Civil
engineering. A great turn-out of an extremely diverse group of visitors.

And again food to die for. BBQ from Rudy’s with all the sides and lemon and
German chocolate cake. The food team has worked hard to bring the best food and
service that the Hamfest has ever had. They also set-up food for the night crew
so they did not go hungry why they worked through the night.

Speaking of food, they have already started servicing breakfast which will
continue through 10:30. So hurry on out for a great breakfast before you sit
down to work your 500 contacts!

Shut down is at 1 pm so hurry on out if you want to get your contacts in. Lets
continue on making this Field Day one of the best for the Quad club event!

Well so far the set-up has gone well with only a few hiccups. Most of the
antennas have been installed in their respective locations. Final installation
of the digital antennas and tweaking of the CW and SSB antennas will be done
Saturday morning. I have attached a picture of how the antennas looked just
before I left for the evening. It is a really great picture seeing the antennas
in the air with a sun set as a back drop.

Thanks to Bill Cordell, the CW room is just right on the temperature – really
cold! I don’t think there will be any complaints about the conditions in the CW
room this year other than – “ can someone turn up the thermostat, Its freezing
in here!”. The SSB room will also have supplement air conditioning as well so
this year should be the coolest operators yet (really bad, isn’t it)!

The GOTA station antenna is up as well as a beverage antenna. I did not found
out who put up the beverage antenna but it is a really big one. I will have to
find out and let everyone know tomorrow.

Last but not least, the culinary expertise of Daphne, Kelli and Anita were
brought together Friday night. They had custom made sandwiches with chips and a
choice of lemon pound cake or chocolate cookies. With personal service they
have brought the meal service up several notches. The culinary team will be
making home made breakfast tacos in the morning. They will be served in the “CW
Bistro” from 8am to 10 am. The team will then have lunch from noon to 2 pm also
being served in the CW Bistro. Then don’t forget Saturday night’s dinner from 5
pm to 7 pm. With BBQ brisket and sausage from Rudy’s, the evening meal will

Greetings All,

As preparations for Field Day move ahead, I have been charged with keeping
track of those who want to operate on FT8 during the event. This will be the
first time FT8 will be used in this ARRL event and if you want to operate in
the FT8 mode, please let me know. We are building a list of FT8 operators, so
we know what needs to be provided to make that happen.  So please let me know
if you want to be added to the list. Just reply to this message and I’ll do the
rest.

If you’re not yet familiar with FT8, there are operating guides on line.
Just be sure to look for WSJT-X version 2.0 or higher. Here’s a link to help
you with that.
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/wsjtx-doc/wsjtx-main-2.0.0.html

WSJT-X can operate in several modes besides FT8, so you’ll want to filter your
reading with that in mind.  There are other documents on line focused strictly
on operating in FT8. Here’s one:
https://www.g4ifb.com/FT8_Hinson_tips_for_HF_DXers.pdf

So, if you haven’t already put your name on the list, this is your chance to do
so.  Send me your name, call sign and email address. All are welcome. And If
you have access to BVARC’s Field Day partner club reflectors, please forward
this note on to those as well.

2 Nights Before Christmas

Two nights before Christmas and up at the shop,

Santa was checking his sleigh for the big hop.

His APRS was already on line,

So, the gang down at NORAD could track him 5 – 9.

The new HF rig was tuned up on 20.

He knew that 100 watts would be plenty.

“I’ll be on VOX for this flight”, he said in his head.

I have to be able to look straight ahead.”

So, sideband it is for the big night tomorrow.

I hope the CW guys won’t be too full of sorrow.

The two-meter rig was already encoded,

With every repeater that could be uploaded.

They’ll know when Santa’s near; they won’t be surprised,

And make sure the kids have all closed their eyes.

He stopped for a moment then gave a big start,

When he suddenly realized he was missing a part.

“Of course!”, he shouted. “its my laptop PC!

I won’t get far without it on my knee.”

“Its got my log and my list and my flight plan too,

Though I always have Rudolph to guide me through.”

He pulled out his wallet once more to check,

That his FCC license was there for the trek.

“Well, it looks like I’m ready”, they heard him declare,

“I’ll be single op unassisted for the entire affair.”

“I better get some rest now before the big night,

So, I can be ready for the long flight.”

And they heard him exclaim as walked off to bed,

“CQ, CQ, CQ . . . QRZed?”

Merry Christmas Y’all

Ron, K5HM

Well said Theresa. As for the a/c we could run extra generators to supply
power. Just a thought.

I agree with Jerry on this,   I can "run", I'm not a pro but I do my best, but
it's not my favorite thing to do.  Half of what field day is for is introducing
ham radio to non-hams.  Do you really think that by introducing people new to
ham radio to a room full of people who are much more interested in racking up
QSOs/points than stopping and taking time to explain what's going on and
answering questions is going to make them any more inclined to become hams?  I
can hear the argument of "That's what GOTA's for" and to a degree can agree
with that.  The problem I have with that is, especially in the case of a new
ham or an old ham that doesn't have the ability to work HF, is that limits the
ability of other hams to ELMER the new or non-hams. The first field day I went
to, I learned a great deal about field day and operating HF sitting with Ross
on a splitter scribeing for him.  Later I actually worked up enough courage to
work a half hour or hour trying to make contacts, something I wouldn't have
done if I hadn't sat with Ross for that time.  I don't have an issue with
having contesters there and letting them run but making field day, or at least
our field day, a nothing but contest stations event would effectively end my
participation in Field Day with BVARC.  I know points wise, I don't do much,
and my help with set up and tear down is limited, and my presence may not be
missed at the event.  But I have no love for serous contesting (of any kind),
I've done serious contest don't like it.

As far as how freaking HOT it got in that house, it was built in the early
50's, I DOUBT anyone has had new insulation blown in in the last 20+ years.
Doesn't matter how good/new your AC is, if the house can't hold the cold in or
keep the heat out, it's going to be hotter that hell.  Auxillary AC would help
if the house can handle them.

As far as MIDRATS go, Kellie and I did have the idea of either making a big pot
of Mac and cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches, I'm not sure why we didn't.

For Field Day next year we will (or should):

Have Jeff Hoke from CenterPoint Energy come out several months before FD and
then again several weeks before.Locate the main antennas East<->West of each
other to minimize interstation interference.Route digital feed lines separate
from CW feed lines.Investigate the use of some portable A/C units.Investigate
the use of coax stubs to further reduce interstation interference.KEEP THE SAME
COOK! (Great job on food!)KEEP THE SAME NETWORK GUY! (Great job on computers,
networking, software, etc. We are really lucky to have you, Glen!)Suggest
either TDXS or BVARC purchase a new 2-el 40m beam.Put CW antennas on highest
manlifts.Investigate the use of a manual switch to switch radios from mains to
generator (to eliminate last minute confusion…or) switch radios to generator
well before 1pm.Make sure GOTA station operators know the rules.
I thought this was one of our best Field Days yet, due to the new location
(irrespective of noise). Hopefully we can work out the noise issues with
CenterPoint or fix whatever is making the noise in the house. The house and the
land were a big improvement over what we have had in the past. The
participation by other clubs (especially KARS) was a big plus. We may need to
make some more rules, especially with respect to moving headsets around in the
SSB room…or make sure all are setup the same way. We also need a greater push
with the SSB operators regarding operating technique to maximize rate (teach
them to run).

I am also dumbfounded and extremely disappointed in the lack of participation
by other TDXS members. I suggest we make a push again for next year, but we
need to start six months in advance so that they do not make other plans first.

I know I have other thoughts and will express them as soon as they come to the

government? That means said thermostat is likely set to comply with
governmental policy. Yes, I had a little “chat” with that thermostat during the
wee hours of boredom Sunday, instantly discovering that it was a Honeywell unit
virtually identical to mine. Those puppies are both programmable and
password-lockable, which Duhacsek was. There’s also the strong possibility
that, if you did bring in portable a/cs, you’d trigger the thermostat to turn
on the central heat. That would depend on whether the thermostat is in “full
automatic” mode as mine is, and what the setpoints are. Instead of trying to
beat the system, why not simply ask the powers that be to unlock it?

As for the interference, I suspect you’re vastly over-thinking the problem
because it was present to a lesser degree last year too. Although the steps you
list should help some, I think the crux of the issue is the mushrooming scale
of the computer equipment you’re so reliant on. Please don’t believe me. Simply
shut down everything except the radios for a short period after midnight next
year and listen for yourself.

Suddenly, the signal levels on the MMTTY scope seem to be very low. In
addition, only the loudest signals are decodable. Nothing in my configuration
has changed (that I know of) except that I did an upgrade to the microHAM micro
KEYER II firmware. (I am not saying that is the cause, but the only thing that
I know of that has changed). I have been using FT8 a lot these days, but I
don't see how that can make a difference.

Rig: K3/P3Interface: micro KEYER II v6.12 with Device Router v8.8.4.

I have checked all cables and setting that I know of to set. Audio levels are
mostly set to max and yet the cross hair display on MMTTY shows low levels. In
addition, the audio seems distorted on receive (at least the image is
distorted). On transmit, all levels are normal and the image is clean.

Any ideas??  Allen R. Brier N5XZ1515 Windloch LaneRichmond, Texas

I hate to jump in but will anyway.  I was having trouble decoding and found the
the K3 had switched to USB. also I now have added a MicroHAM Interface III and
my audio levels were not set.  Robie suggested that I set USB to LSB and play
with the Audio levels. By the time I got it working , the contest was over. I
wrote everything down so I won't have that problem again and will start the set
up the day or so before the contest. Lessons learned.   From a rookie.

[BVARC] !10 meter contes

2017-12-11 Thread gmuller885--- via BVARC
Guys and Gals.
I tried. Had only one opening on friday night and the wife called during it
so had to leave. When I came back it was dead and stayed that way for the rest
of the contest.  I now understand the term sporadic contact. One second it
would be there and the next gone. Since I have a hearing problem I would ask
for a repeat and they were gone. Also I have a request. Please be patient with
us newbees and talk slower when asked.  I had one guy that stated he did not
have time to repeat. In that length of time he could have done so. His loss as
I could not get his call. See you all next contest.  From the deaf and slow
side.

all
All I see and hear is noise.  Can"t even hear N5XZ although I did get him
yesterday at about 7+ pm last night.  Nothing this morning. I have trouble with
contesters that have no patients with us beginners.  You ask for a repeat and
and they say they do not have enough time. They could have given the repeat in
that time. I do not type fast and my memory on , just happened, is not so good
so I need them to slow down and repeat. Guess I am just not cut out to be a
heavy contester but will keep on trucking.

That’s the rub, the GFM well may have been intended as satire, but it came
across as a whine. Something along the lines of, "that mean ol' judge rejected
my disability claim so buy me a K3 with accessories." Excuuse me? I mean,
if Bill legitimately needs a  stable rig, even I have a spare IC-7000. It's no
K3, but it's better than a 718. But, the message appeared to be an expectation
of charity because of disability. I'm disabled, and I managed to get my degree
and then worked.

Rick, ya know, I've been mulling over the call for BVARC officer candidates,
and I keep returning to the same thought. Even down at the level of a ham club,
it's all about the politics. Who knows whom, and so forth. I could technically
be an officer, certainly, but could I actually accomplish anything? I keep
hearing vague rumblings about how staid BVARC is, and just today I was told
that you're part of the problem. I don’t know who's right, but I am smart
enough to realize every story has multiple sides. In any case, it's all this
strife and consternation around anything that matters that keeps people from
getting involved. It's a major reason why I stay away from so many meetings.
Who needs extra aggravation? I freely acknowledge Ron Story pretty much soured
me on BVARC a few years ago by disinviting me to Field Day because of my
disability. I'm sure he had good intentions, but he was out of line and needed
correcting. That’s the most embittering point, nobody spoke up so it's really
difficult to care about BVARC.

Ya know, I didn’t mind the GFM submission,  I just thought the level of the
request was quite ludicrous.   Why not start a tad smaller.
The issue was a drifting hf rig.   A 718 Icom is pretty darn stable and will
drive an amp just fine.   It wud be under warranty too.   I might have even
donated empathetically to that cause.

Why do we not like the faster rates?  From the outside looking in, it seems
like more lax rules would benefit us.  What am I missing?

There is no reason for concern now. FCC says temporary and I see no reason to
think otherwise. If there is a problem after 60 days, let's deal with it then.
Why worry over nothing now ?? Too many other things going on to worry about
without adding more
 for no current reason.

We must do all we can to ensure this "temporary" order is only temporary- 60

Caribbean.

Let us all beware of those at the league who have data ambitions that aim to

FCC Grants Temporary Waiver to Permit Higher Symbol Rate Data Transmissions

The FCC has granted an ARRL request to waive current Amateur Radio rules to
permit data transmissions at a higher symbol rate than currently permitted, in

Welcome Paul
I also have heard that the 7300 is a great unit for the price. Icom
calls it entry level but I talked to the ARRL lab guys and they said it is a
GAME CHANGER. It is easy to use and for an SDR it leaves little if anything
to be desired. The filters are fantastic. That is from the ARRL lab guys.

Purchasing at Exchange for all Vets

As you know, if you
retired from the military, you have access to the Exchanges and
to the online exchanges. The law changes on November 11, 2017,
Veterans Day this year allowing ANY honorable separated veteran
the right to purchase from the exchange.

You need to
pre-register.

Go to shopmyexhcnage.com.
On the right near the top is a box Veterans Online Shopping
Benefit Take the first step.. Click on it and it takes you
to vetverify.org. That is where you register. Then on November
11, 2017, you will have access to create an account at
shopmyexchange.com.

I got lucky, someone
was looking out for me somewhere. I registered two weeks ago and
the other day, I received an email to create my exchange account
and start shopping now as a Beta test for the exchange. I have
been perusing the goodies and one thing I looked up for my
daughter was some Whey. On Amazon, it was $58 and in the exchange
it was $29. Not everything is as deeply discounted.

Also, all purchases are
tax free. Anything over $49 is shipped free, under $49 is a flat
$4.95. And... they match prices with walmart, target, amazon.
What could be better.

Hope this will help
some of you that are vets or have a vet in the family. It sure
put a smile on my face.

Last evening I did not hear the name Donovan, and was not cleared by the XYL

( I just landed a new contract  or contract to hire position ).
Will someone be available to accept dues at the Fire Station?

and on another note:
Do you need lumber for stakes to hold these antennas ( wire antennas ) firm at
the ground end or guy-ropes?
I may be able to provide some short, unsharpened, 2x2 scraps. Lathe or other
woodworking tools could be an issue with them, unless someone wants to be
heroic with a hatchet.

and:
My new job does involve a Christian Television station. It is *possible* that

I am also putting up an inverted V 80 meter wire Die pole and was
going to ask the same question. My lot points to all four points of the
compass. North, East, South, West. So what is the best direction to point the
ends
of the wire and does it have to be 180 degs or can one leg be off center
of the end? I know that the ends do not radiate well so if I go NW and SE
would that be the best.

know that broadside is where most of my signals will come from...or does it
really matter?? Also usually one sets up dipoles wires so the combined

or
will that decrease my signals?

Subject: Severe Weather Potential on Sunday

A message from HARRIS COUNTY OFFICE OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT

April 1, 2017
Severe Weather Potential on Sunday
What is the danger?
There is a potential for severe weather in Harris County starting early
Sunday morning. According to the _National Weather Service_
(http://www.weather.gov/hgx/) (NWS), widespread rainfall amounts of 2-4
inches are
possible. High hourly rainfall rates could lead to flash flooding. Other
threats
include tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds.
What you should do:
Residents are encouraged to monitor local media for weather information,
particularly before venturing out on Sunday. In the event of street
flooding, remember “_Turn Around, Don’t Drown_ (http://tadd.weather.gov/) .”
Driving through high water or around barricades on flooded roadways or
underpasses can lead to death!
Basic Flood Safety Tips
* Turn Around, Don’t Drown! ® DO NOT DRIVE through high water and DO
NOT DRIVE AROUND BARRICADES! Just 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle
away.
* DO NOT WALK through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water
can knock you down.
* If your home floods, STAY THERE. You are safer at home than trying
to navigate flooded streets on foot.
* If floodwaters rise around your car but the water is NOT MOVING,
abandon the car and move to higher ground. Do not leave the car and enter
MOVING water.
* STAY AWAY from streams, rivers, and creeks during heavy rainfall.
These areas can flood quickly and with little warning.
* MOVE important items – especially important documents like
insurance policies - to the highest possible floor. This will help protect
them
from flood damage.
* DISCONNECT electrical appliances and do not touch electrical
equipment if you are wet or standing in water. You could be electrocuted.
In the event of thunderstorms, stay inside. Remember: When Thunder Roars,
Go Indoors! Here are lightning safety tips from NWS:
* Avoid open fields and stay away from tall, isolated trees or other
tall objects.
* Stay away from water, wet items, such as ropes, and metal objects,
such as fences and poles.
* Stay off corded phones. You can use cellular or cordless phones.
Don't touch electrical equipment such as computers, TVs, or cords. You can
remote controls safety.
* Avoid plumbing. Do not wash your hands, take a shower or wash
dishes.
*   Protect
