Just make sure you do a test run before the actual event. I had a devil of a time eliminating noise when utilizing power from my Harley. Larry On Mar 28, 2023, at 16:24, Robert Polinski via BVARC wrote:Always connect any radio direct (thru a fuse close to the battery) to the battery if it puts out 10W or more. Always check the swr on the installation. Motorcycles have a poor ground plane, if you use VHF. Normally UHF (70cm) is not a problem. Running a radio with high swr can damage it, or at least cause it to  shut the power output way down. They make antennas that work without a ground  plane, if needed. Most  radios can hold up to some vibration, but over a long period, may tend to shorten there life. Several manufactures have weather resistance radios or remote heads that are weather resistance, good for use on MC. Re: [BVARC] THANKS to all who ATTENDED Ham Radio Night

2021-07-30 Thread Larry Riendeau via BVARC
En route to the game, the wife and I were redirected to Memorial Herman SL
where out infant granddaughter was being admitted in respiratory distress. The
seriousness of the situation quickly made it clear our seat and parking tickets
would not be used by us. I did try to reach out to as many members as possible
in attempt to give the tickets away - but no takers, even at free!

Sorry to have missed this fun time but as everyone knows family is the
priority. Our granddaughter will remain in over the weekend but is doing
better.

Hope to join in next time.

Re: [BVARC] Frys

2021-02-24 Thread Larry Riendeau via BVARC
Easy to foresee this happening. Over the past five years, the quality of items
in stock was questionable at best. I purchased a power supply only to learn it
was previously returned but not marked as such. Three weeks later i saw the
same item back on the shelf being offered as new.

Not sure of your exact need, but if you are sourcing an FM transmitter for 98.7

Re: [BVARC] Untangling My (Your's too) Understanding of DMR

2020-02-14 Thread Larry Riendeau via BVARC
Thanks Rick! I wanted to make the meeting but my back wasn’t having it. I have
DMR equipment and actually thought I had it functioning properly, only to find
after a lapse in use either Brandmeister made system changes or my radio is
kaput. I have since found it does work on some but not many talkgroups. Here’s
hoping the link will help. If not, I’ve got some equipment for sale at the
Hamfest.

It does speak to an acceptable procedure to follow should a legitimate like
need ever present itself. Perhaps first notifying the board so as to request
“official” use of the logo and email list. This would also serve to more
readily identify exactly what it was, a scam. And although I despise the
creator of this specific scheme, I’m equally thankful one of our children is
suffering from this illness.

My .02 cents pre-tax.

Re: [BVARC] [tdxs-list] Expanding Privileges to End Amateur Radio

2018-02-28 Thread Larry riendeau via BVARC
In terms of experience, I’m an old rookie and I’m all in for new participants
in amateur radio, but not at any cost. The modicum of professionalism
associated with being a ham is substantially due in part to the incremental
privileges derived by testing. This is in line with the premise something
worked for likely has greater value than that which is simply given. Statistics
have shown in almost every case where requirements are ‘relaxed’ in hopes of
increased interest, the results were dismal. Even worse, those who showed
initial interest were equally likely to lose interest within a short period of
time.

Does anyone have details as to the number of current users seeking this change,
as well as how many potential users might pursue interest should additional
privileges be given?  Brings to mind something once said in a similar issue;
always be careful what you ask for - you just might get it.
