[BVARC] Missed lecture by Dave K5GN on WRTC

2023-03-06 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Due to the late scheduling of Dave's talk at the GHH last week plus the
location of the meeting was wrong and equipment needed to give the
presentation was not in place, we have rescheduled the presentation.

N5XZ, K5GN and K0NM decided that it would be best if Dave's presentation is
held at one of TDXS meetings in the future. New date, time, and location of
Dave's presentation will be made at a later date.

The easiest, and cheapest solution is to hang a self contained FSM a few
feet down the Drone.to get away from the PWM noise. Otherwise, you will
have to filter the noise in the FSM.

Re: [BVARC] N5XZ ARRL Sweepstakes Contest, CW - 2020

2020-11-10 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Jim,

I had family events that took precedence over my contesting. But, I did take my
TS-480 remote with me. I heard you calling CQ on 40 meters and called you
several times but you could not hear me. In fact, I only worked a few stations
and gave up after a couple of hours. When I got back home, I found my amp had
tripped and my remote was QRP with 5 watts instead of 700 watts. No one could
hear me on 40 meters with the high noise level snd 5 watts. I finally got about
one hour of mostly S+P operation done from home on 20 meters on Sunday and
worked N5XZ.

Re: [BVARC] OT: Cable modem and router recommendations

2020-10-13 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Dave,

I have replaced the RRC boxes at both ends of my remotes. I have also reloaded
the RRC software in the RRC. No Change.

I have systematically replaced power supplies, rigs etc at both ends. I even
used a different computer at home. No Change.

At one point, I thought it may be caused by feedback into the rig at the ranch.
So, I removed the amp. No Change.

I have two coax cables feeding the 80m or the 10-40m antennas. I have removed
one or the other to reduce feedback. No Change.

I have reduced the power output in the rig at the ranch. No Change.

The only things left for me are the modem/router I use for internet service at
the ranch and my internet service at home. I will replace these to see if they
are a problem.

I have operated my remotes for several years without problems. This problem
started about three months ago without my making any changes to the rigs at
home and remote sites.

Re: [BVARC] OT: Cable modem and router recommendations

2020-10-12 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Allen,

Welcome to the club! Comcast has had problems recently with data dropouts
and delays.

I have had issues with my remotes for about three months. have swapped out
EVERYTHING at both ends but the problem still persists. So, I am convinced
that the quality of the Internet service is the culprit. My CW has been
getting corrupted when I use N1MM to send CW to my ranch rig. I can listen
in on my home rig on what is being transmitted. However, when Chris, N8AI,
connects to it, he has no problems. He can ragchew either with a paddle or
a CW engine and no dropouts.

About a year ago, Chris, N8AI, was getting into data drops with his Xfinity
service. When you run speedtest, the service is in excess of 50 mbps. But,
he was still getting problems. One problem was data drops. It was fixed by
running a direct cable to the router rather than going with wifi
connection. The second problem may have been related to certain settings in
the Xfinity routers that channel more speed to streaming video than to
standard data use like we need for our rigs. I believe that someone at the
top engineering level must have put Chris's connection at a higher priority
to get away from data drops.

I used to run my remote station with less than 1 Mbs data rates. Now, even
with 15 Mbs, I have data being corrupted. Instead of sending K0NM, I have
heard K9MT, K0MT, etc. I have reached the point where I am totally
frustrated. So, if anyone comes up with an answer, please let me know.

[BVARC] K0NM TQP score

I activated WHAR from the ranch and FBEN from home. The ranch remote has
problems with distorted CW being sent and so I was limited to 20 and 40 meters
operation. Here is the WHAR score.

A lot of people I worked probably don’t use a logging program. There were a LOT

[BVARC] K0NM NAQPCW Aug 2020 score

2020-08-02 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
The low bands were really noisy early in the evening. Had I known that the low
bands would get quieter around midnight, I would have taken a break early and
saved some time. Instead I ran out of time when the low bands were less noisy.
A rookie mistake for sure. Fortunately, I followed Dave’s advice and jumped on
10 and 15 meters at the start and picked up some needed multipliers. Also,
tuned my home antenna for 160 meters and added some more multipliers.

Summary:
Band QSOs Mults
---
 160:6 5
  80: 10235
  40: 30046
  20: 34247
  15: 4719
  10:3 2
---
Total: 800 154
Total Score = 123,200

[BVARC] FD operation with 1D and 1E

2020-06-21 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
1D operation rules state that contacts between 1D stations do not count.

1E operation rules state that ALL contacts, including those with 1D stations,
count for points.

Does anyone have any feelings for what percentage of operators will be
operating 1D during FD? My gestimate is between 20 and 40% of the operators
will be operating 1D. That is a lot of QSO’s for no points. It may be
worthwhile to borrow a generator and operate 1E during FD.

A sign of things to come :)

Please forward a message to all of your ham friends to go to the

Re: [BVARC] Field Day 2020

2020-05-03 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Allen and the FD group,

One option would be to operate the FD at the chosen site and include the
ability for one or more radios to be operated remotely. Those who are in the
low risk group for complications from the virus can operate from the FD site.
Those in the high risk group can operate the remote station from home. This
will reduce the crowding at the FD site and also allow better separation of the
operators. Our high risk group members can operate safely from home.

I am not sure how this mode of operation will be classified by the ARRL, but,
all the radios can still be operated on generators and will be located at the
same site.

Also, be careful with that solid state amp. Don’t get hooked on it. You may

Rick,

Chris bright up an interesting point regarding what may be different in the
antenna if the ends of the wires are connected or not. He says (my
understanding) that a Cage antenna has the distal ends connected together. If
not, it is not a Cage antenna.

My question is, if I had a two wires dipole, exactly same length and close
together, does the antenna behave differently if the ends are connected or not?

Re: [BVARC] Antenna Theory Technical Question

Look up CAGE antenna. It is an old design that reduces the Q of the antenna and
therefore makes the antenna work over a larger frequency range.

Subject: [BVARC] Antenna Theory Technical Question

I am in the midst of analyzing a Ham market HF antenna. Still building the
EZNEC model, but working it thru the gray matter.

Case: Take a 1/2 wl dipole antenna -- center fed. Each side is made up of
multiple, equal length wires that are each insulated, parallel, and closely
spaced. The wires are connected/common at the center feed point, but open at
the far end.

If, at this length, each wire's material DC resistance is 5 ohmsdoes using
multiple wires in parallel, as described above, 1) lower the total RF material
resistance, as resistors in parallelor 2) does it stay the same or 3) does
it become additive?

Any comments would be appreciated. I've got my hypothesis, but wishing
additional input.

Thanks and 73 ...Rick W5RH

Gents and Ladies,

This is a formal call for papers, that is presentations, for the 2020 Ham Com.
It is being send to former volunteers, the DFW Contest Group, the Lone Star DX
Association, and other contest and dx clubs in the W5 call area.

Please look over the following information and submit proposals for
presentations to me , at this email address, by January 15, 2020. It is not
necessary to have completed the presentation, but I would like a title and
synopsis. This will serve as an aid to Ham Com for advertising.

Presentations should stress becoming a life time learner and encourage newer
hams to learn by doing. What follows are some ideas gleaned from a survey
undertaken last year. I have a tentative commitment for Antenna Basics,
Antennas for Your Yard, and the TX7T Expedition to the Marquesas. We have a
definite need for presenters for N1MM+, both basic and advanced. DO NOT FEEL
YOUR PRESENTATION NEEDS TO BE LIMITED TO THESE TOPICS. If you have a good idea
for a presentation, please let me know.

Here are the results of our survey, weighted .6 for first choice and .4 for
second choice of programs:

1 53 points LOTW, Club, OQRS. Bureaus

2 48 points Options for Computer Logging

3 48 points Installation and Maintenance of Feed Lines and Connectors

4 41 points Measuring Performance and Detection of Change

5 40 points Tips and Tricks for DXing and Contesting

6 33 points Remote Stations, Construction and Operation

7 31 points Antenna Basics

8 28 points Cable Terminations

9 26 points Overview of N1MM+

10 25 points Evaluation of Transmitters and Receivers

11 23 points N1MM+ with FT4 and FT8

12 23 points N1MM+ and Station Automation

13 23 points Contesting with FT4 and FT8

I would appreciate your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you by
January 15.

73 and Happy New Year

Jim W0UO

I am forwarding this reminder from NM5M regarding the Texas QSO Party this

create the full list of ALL counties on the air. Also, if you are going to be
operating ‘roving’ in a car, please let him know which counties and the
time/day of operation. The Rovers make Texas QSO party a lot of fun to follow
as they go from county to county.

Please get on the air, even for a few minutes, and give people a call with your
county. Or, call CQ TXQP and have fun giving out your county.

Chuck is putting together a list of counties that are going to on the air
during the Texas QSO Party. Please read his e-mail below and respond to him
with your call, the county you will activate, on which day, mode of

The Texas QSO Party is coming soon. September 14-15 (9am-9pm CDT Saturday

Check the TQP website for additional information
including rules, official county abbreviations etc.

Also there you will find a 2019 Routes link to
 Counties on
the Air page containing maps that I'm in the process of building showing
planned activity -- right now we are showing activity from 152 of the 254

102 counties needing activity.

Regardless of whether you plan to be mobile or fixed I'd like to add your
planned operation to the map. If you are planning to operate in the QSO
party please send me the following info as a reply to this email and I will
post it ASAP. If you have already responded to this request, thank you and
please disregard this request, but you might want to check out the maps to
see who else is going to be on from your county(s).

[BVARC] Fwd: Texas QSO Party Coming Soon -- Time to Make Plans

2019-09-01 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Texas QSO party is a Fun event held once a year. I would urge everyone to get
on the air and support the great state of Texas on Radio. You do not have to be
a contester to participate.

You can operate as much time as you want during the two days of this event. You
can operate SSB or CW or both. You can also operate from home QTH or mobile.
You can call CQ or just respond to people calling CQ.

The exchange for TX stations is 59 and four letter county abbreviation. If you
are in Harris county and operating SSB, your respond will be 59 HARR. If in
Fort Bend and operating CW, it will be 599 FBEN.

Go to the TQP web site for more info on rules and county abbreviations.
http://txqp.net/ Please read Chuck’s e-mail below if you are going to call CQ
and work a county. He is putting together a list of people and counties that
will be on the air.

Please get on the air and support this event by responding to people calling CQ
TQP.

[BVARC] CW OPEN (CWO) contest teams

2019-08-27 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
If anyone is interested in being on a team for the CW Open Contest, feel
free to join the DFWCG group. Eric NM5M is organizing the teams and everyone
is welcome to join. You do not have to be a member of DFWCG. Here is his
invite.

Any interest in being on a CW Open team? Let me know, reply to
 nm5me...@gmail.com

Background: CWops sponsors CWT - fun, weekly competitions at times thought
to be optimum for amateurs in ITU Regions 1, 2, and 3 (
 http://www.cwops.org/cwt.html).

The CW OPEN (CWO), which is held on the first Saturday in September, is
guided by the same principles along with enhancements to make it a serious,
annual competitive event.

Object: Work as many CW stations worldwide as possible within each session.
There are three separate competitions at three separate times - each is
called a "session." Each station may be worked once per band in each
session. Entry can be made to any or all of the sessions. Each session is
scored separately. Entry into multiple sessions will be added together for a
combined score in a separate, additional aspect to this event.

Date: September 7, 2019

Sessions and Times

Session

Date

Time

1

September 7, 2019

 - 0359z

2

September 7, 2019

1200 - 1559z

3

September 7, 2019

2000 - 2359z

Eligibility: All amateurs are encouraged to participate.

Exchange: Sequential Serial Number and Name. Serial numbers start at 001 for
each session.

QSO Points: One point for every valid two way QSO with correct exchange of
information. May contact for points only once per band, per session. Note:
do not remove dupes from your log.

Multipliers: For each session, each different call sign is a multiplier the
first time it is worked in that session. Note that a busted call sign is not
a multiplier.

Score: For each session, total QSO points times the total number of
multipliers. If more than one session is entered, a combined score equal to
the sum of all session scores will be reported separately in the results.

Mode: CW only

Bands: 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10 meters

Class Entry: Single Operator only. Indicate power level of QRP, Low, or
High; QRP is 5W or less; Low is 100W or less; High is any legal power above
100W. Packet, Skimmer, and Reverse Beacon systems are allowed.

A Team consists of TWO or more single operators.

1.Teams, with up to ten operators each, can be organized and compete
against each other.

2.There is no geographical restriction for a team; this offers a
strategic component.

3.Team scores is the sum of all team players' score in all sessions that
they choose to enter.

Note: Since there is only ONE overall Team Competition winner for the entire
contest, those who enter ALL 3 sessions obviously have a much better chance
of winning.

Log Submission:

* All logs must be in Cabrillo format. See FAQ below for details.
Paper logs will not be accepted.

* All logs for CWO 2019 must be submitted by the log deadline:
September 22, 2019.

* Submit a separate CWO Cabrillo log for each session. Serial
numbers begin at 1 for each session.

* Name your logs for each session by using 1, 2, or 3 after your
call sign.

Sample Log Names for K3XYZ:
Session 1. K3XYZ1.log
Session 2. K3XYZ2.log
Session 3. K3XYZ3.log

* Logs must be submitted in electronic format. A customized log
submission form for CWO is available here:
http://www.b4h.net/cwops/

Click on "Log Submission" and you will be taken to a Log Submission page,
which you can use in either of two ways.

Method A. Click "Browse": Let's you find and upload your Cabrillo file
directly.

Method B. Paste Area: You can copy the information from your CWO Cabrillo
file, and paste it directly into the text area shown.

After using either Method A or Method B mentioned above, simply click
"Submit Log".

Please Note: All logs submitted to the CW Open will be made open and
available to the public. By submitting a log for the log checking process,
the entrant has agreed unconditionally to the open publication of that log.

* Please submit separate logs for each Session - do not try to
combine them into one for submitting purposes.

* After the contest period ends, you can verify that your log has
been received by returning to this page and clicking here:
 Logs Received

* If you have any problems or questions, please contact us at:
 c...@cwops.org

[BVARC] IARU contest this weekend

2019-07-10 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
This is going to be a great weekend to work a lot of DX stations during the
IARU contest. Lots of them will be running power with great antennas. So,
you will have no trouble hearing or working them.

The contest starts at 1200 UTC on Saturday and ends at 1200 UTC on Sunday.
The exchange is very simple for us in Houston area:

59 7 for SSB and 599 7 for CW. The number 7 is our ITU region number. You
can also operate both CW and SSB.

If you need any more information, please go to
 http://www.iaru.org/contests.html

73 and have fun.

[BVARC] Weekly Phone Contest Practices

2019-06-25 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
There is an excellent weekly SSB practice contest lasting half hour every
Tuesday evening. This is an informal session that is excellent for people
who want to learn or improve their skills in SSB communications and
contesting. The practice session lasts only half an hour. The exchange is
very simple - Name and State.

You do not have to keep a log if you just want to practice. Otherwise, you
can setup N1MM to log your QSOs and report your score on 3830scores.com .

Time - Wednesday, 0230-0300 UTC (Tuesday evening, in NA)

Bands - 15, 20, 40, 80, 160.

You may work a station once per band.

Bands - 21.325, 14.250, 7.175, 3.800 (avoid 3.790-3.800, lower is better),
1.875

Power & Mode - 100 watts

SSB Exchange - Operator name and station location (S/P/C) for NA stations.

Here are the rules for this fun half hour

Most of the logistics have been accounted for, but one important category remains incomplete. The Field Day rules list a number of bonus activities which provide the opportunity to add thousands of points to our Field Day score. Many of these activities have been assigned, but some important ones remain. For example, 1 satellite QSO is worth 100 points. That is equivalent to 50 SSB QSOs in our class! I’ve attached an excerpt from the Field Day rules with the unassigned activities highlighted in red (the green ones are already taken).  Please review this list and volunteer to fulfill one of these task. Not only will you be helping us to achieve a great contest score, but you will be helping to demonstrate our engagement with the community, as well as our capability to function in an emergency situation. 73, Doug WB5TKITDXS Field Day Coordinator P.S. The pole near the house has an outdoor mercury type lamp, which may be the

[BVARC] Noise level at FD site

2019-06-08 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
The gate was open because of grass cutters. I went in and made some noise
measurements. The light pole near the house still has noise with max noise
around 3.750, 7.100 and some on 14.200. I walked 100 feet north of the pole and
the noise was reduced but still detectable.

The current design with the CW manlift being in the parking area will have the
beam pointing right at the light pole. Putting it on the other side, north of
the road, would be better.

Nizar,

I am starting the checkout and updating of the PC's this weekend.

As far as the powerline noise, I reached out to Jeff at centerpoint two weeks
ago. He came out and found a bad arrestor near the site. He has opened a
repair order to have it replaced. The arrestor is near the 7-11 on old Richmond

Allen,

I agree. I am starting to ‘freak out’ about not getting things done in time.
Dave sent me a nice Long e-mail regarding receiving antenna for 40 meters. I
sure would like to have that antenna. He has everything to set this up. But, we
cannot have the phased beverage pointed at the GOTA station in the emergency
truck. Dave also stated that we cannot have it near the main antennas or it
will be overpowered by the transmitted signals.

Here is the situation with the FD.

1. Bill has the antennas under control. He is going ahead on planning to
put the CW tower close to the house and the other two parallel to it so they
all point NW to NE rotatable manually.

2. I am assuming that Glenn has everything taken care of for the
computers. Please send him an e-mail to check.

3. We have additional A/C units

4. Your list is working fine. We can add more people later.

5. The GOTA station needs a leader or two. I don’t mind helping to
promote it but someone needs to be there. Any suggestions?

6. Mike says the food is taken care of. He has appointed Kelli and Daphne
to take care of this. We probably need to supplement the food with high energy
protein snacks for late night operators.

7. No one has reported on the progress of the Reliant people for the
reduction of noise.

I will try and get a meeting together before the BVARC meeting since I will be
out of the country for several days in June.

Subject: [tdxs-list] FD Issues to be finalized

We are about one month away from our Mega FD event. We have a couple of issues
that need to be decided as we move forward with the planning.

1. GOTA station operation, management and promotion.
2. Finalization of Antenna placement that includes location of GOTA station
3. 6 meter antenna, location and operation.

GOTA station is very important during FD because it can account for many points
besides the QSO scores. We need someone to take on the task of organizing the
setup, operation and marketing of the station to the local schools, Boy Scouts,
ARRL officials, and other organizations. All of these activities can add a lot
of points to the total score. DO WE HAVE ANY VOLUNTEERS??

We also need to finalize the exact location of the GOTA station at the FD site,
including filters and antennas, so we can finalize the layout of the antennas
for minimum interference between different stations.

Finally, due to the low number of sunspots, a lot of our QSOs are going to come
from operating 40 and 80 meters. As you all know, the noise level on these two
bands will make it very difficult to hear stations calling us without special
listening antennas. Dave, K5GN, has a beverage antenna for 40 meters that he is
willing to bring and install. However, it needs to be installed away from the
other antennas, including the GOTA station.

The 6 meter antenna location needs to be decided and the rig needs to be
manned. Do we have a person responsible for the antenna erection and operation
of the station? Will this rig be operated on FT8 or just SSB?

If you are involved with any of these three issues, please let everyone know
the plan.

2019-05-20 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
Allen,

[BVARC] FW: [tdxs-list] FD Issues to be finalized

2019-05-20 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
Please read Scotts comments regarding the importance of the GOTA station.
Please volunteer if you are interested – even part-time.

Subject: Re: [tdxs-list] FD Issues to be finalized

As a kibitzer with some expertise, let me echo and amplify Nizar’s comments
regarding GOTA.

I hold our GOTA station efforts up as the primary reason my club placed 1st in
3A for 2018. There is a 500 QSO cap on the GOTA station. We hit that cap.
That’s 500 PH Qs added to the total count w/o changing class.

Additionally, for every operator who makes 20 QSOs, a 20 point bonus is
awarded. This is matched in 20 QSO increments up to 100.

If you can have a dedicated GOTA “Coach” on-site the entire time the station is
operated, those bonus points are doubled.

Last year we had three operators make 20 Qs, two operators make 60(+) Qs, and
two operators make 100(+) Qs each. That resulted in 380 BONUS points. These
were doubled because we had a full-time GOTA coach, so in addition to to the
500 PH QSO points, we added 760 bonus points to our submitted score. The net
contribution was 1260 points to our final tally. Our PH station made 1531 Qs
in 24 hours, so our GOTA station was equivalent to another PH station without
changing our class to 4A.

Someone please step up and “own” the GOTA station. We had 5 or 6 Coaches over
the 24 hour period so it doesn’t require you to be there the entire contest,
just recruit coaches and operators. (Our two “iron men” were a mother and son
team who worked from 11P-4A and again from 11A-2P with son logging 149 Qs and
mom logging 154 Qs (just to have bragging rights).

Good luck guys!

[BVARC] Yesterday's training sessions on K3, N1MM and FT8

2019-05-10 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
Despite the weather, we had over 20 people show up for the training on K3,
N1MM and FT8. We were able to get a hotspot to work inside the building and
do live demos of the K3 and N1MM. Some of the attendees got to call CQ on CW
and SSB on the remote. Bill Cordell gave a very nice and detailed
presentation on FT8 and FT4 with live connection to his remote site. Seeing
the live demo of FT8 was fascinating to me since I have never used this
modality before. Unlike CW operation, you have enough time between contacts
to get a cup of coffee without missing anything!

Since several people missed these presentations due to bad weather, Mike
Hardwick has agreed to add these presentations to the June meeting program.
The K3 and N1MM presentations will be made by Curt Fletcher. The meeting
agenda also includes a presentation by Rick Hiller on FD antennas.

[BVARC] FW: FW: [tdxs-list] Performance of KK5W Mega Field Days over five years

As far as I know, ft4 will not be released for use in the June vhf or field
day contests. The rc5 software has a kill switch that executes in early June.

I am planning to use ft8 for this year's event.

Robie or Glenn,

I am not an expert on FT8 or FT4. Can you please comment on Wes’s comments
regarding FT4? I was under the impression that Fox and Hounds mode was not
allowed for FD.

At the risk of hijacking your post, Nizar, I’m wondering about a few things.
First, the upcoming FT4 “practice” session this Friday at UTC is supposed
to break in the mode for contesting. Actually, if you tune 14080 there are
already a ton of signals there and I’ve been working lots of stations using
that mode. So, I think the practice session has already started. Second, does
anyone know what the exchange will be during that time? As it stands now, most
everyone is just sending signal reports as per FT8. Interestingly enough, if
someone replies to your CQ with an RTTY contest exchange i.e 589 TX, the
software asks you if you want to jump into the RTTY contest mode similar to FT8
Fox and Hounds. When you do, it’s possible to work multiple stations as if you
were the fox. Third, since the final version of FT4 will be announced in June,
I’m thinking this could be the preferred digital mode for FD. That is assuming
some type of FD exchange is developed similar to FT8. Hopefully things will
smooth out before the end of next month.

Wes, N5WW

P.S. This is just my humble opinion but from what I have seen with FT4, I
think it might upstage FT8. Nowadays we all want instant gratification and six
seconds is a lot shorter than the interminable twelve you have to hold your
breath for with FT8.

While FD has always been about community service and promotion of ham radio,

ARRL specifically encourages ham radio operators to make as many QSO’s as

Re: [BVARC] Seeking Field Day Suggestions

2019-04-30 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
David,

I am just a messenger getting the word out about FD. Most of the work is being
done by a team of people such as Allen , Rick Hiller, Bill Cordell, Glenn
Anderson, Mike Hardwick and many more volunteers who help to make this Mega FD
a reality.

I have personally found FD to be very educational. The best way to learn is to
ask people (Not while they are operating). I hope you and others will attend
and help with setup, operation and teardown.

Make it a point to introduce yourself to others since there will be at least
four clubs involved.

Thank you for your efforts to make BVARC a great radio club.

I plan to attend BVARC’S Field Day and bring an impressive load of ignorance

[BVARC] Seeking Field Day Suggestions

2019-04-27 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Field Day is more than just putting up Antennas, rigs and making contacts. It
is a great time for teaching fellow members about ham radio and the multiple
modalities used for making QSOs.

But, more than that, it is about sharing some quality time with members of the
different clubs, getting to know them and sharing some great food with them.

So, this year, let us add some fun things to do for our Mega Field Day. What
social functions would you like to add to FD? Chili Cook-off? Pie/cake baking
contest?

Send in your suggestion so we can make this Mega Field Day a fun event for our
families also.

Scott,

Thanks for your comments. We will definitely incorporate some of them in our
FD. Antenna placement modeling is a great idea since we have three sets of
antennas and some interference between them does happen even with bandpass
filters.

Good luck with your FD. We hope to work you. Our FD call is KK5W.

[BVARC] The Engine behind a successful Mega Field Day

2019-04-21 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
If you have attended one of the Mega Field Days, the first thing that you
see is this massive TV screen with a real time score and stats of the number
of QSOs in different modes as the 10 simultaneous operators are making QSOs.
The second most impressive thing you see is that all the rigs and computers
are standardized. You can move from one rig to another and never have to
worry about learning how to operate a new rig. ALL the rigs are K3s thanks
to members who bring their K3 rigs to the Field Day.

So, what about the computers? Well, we are very fortunate to have Glenn,
WB5TUF, who has managed to accumulate discontinued computers that are able
to operate N1MM and are linked to an internal network. Every year, Glenn
starts about a month before Field Day by dusting off these computers,
upgrading the software and upgrading the N1MM software. He checks the
networking of these computers so that they all work. The day before Field
Day, Glenn loads up his car with these computers and brings them to the
Field Day. He installs the computers, with the help of several volunteers,
at each station. He makes sure they are all linked to an internal network to
his master computer. All the K3s are checked to make sure they are ready to
operate in their mode of operation.

While Glenn is setting up the computers, others are installing the cabling
and the filters to allow multiple users to share the antennas. Test QSOs are
made to ensure that all the rigs and antennas operate properly. If there is
anything that needs to be done, the people setting up the stations don't
wait to be told or asked. Everyone know to just DO IT.

During the 24 hours of FD operation, every contact made by the operators is
linked to Glenn's master computer and the results displayed in real time on
the big TV screen.

The next amazing this to watch is when FD is over. Everyone pitches in to
take down the antennas, roll up the coax, unhook the computers and rigs,
pack up the computers, clean the rooms and the kitchen, take out the trash
and within four hours, leave the site as if FD never happened.

Come and be part of this Mega Field Day event. There are not many Field Day
entries with 10 or more rigs in the country. It is definitely a unique
experience.

[BVARC] The Quad Club Field Day location and Information

2019-04-14 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
WHEN?

The Quad Club Field Day is going to held on the fourth weekend of June. The
Dates are June 22-23, 2019. The actual FD starts at 1800 UTC Saturday and
ends at 23:59 UTC on Sunday. Setup of antennas and tear down information
will be made available later. For more information about operating times and
rules, click on the Rules link below to the arrl.org web site.

WHERE?

Our Field Day will be held at the beautiful 50 acres Duhacsek park in Sugar
Land. It has a nice house on it full amenities for the weekend. Mike, N5VCX,
was able to secure the house and access to the park for antenna erection
during Field Day operation. The last Field Day was held there and it worked
out great. You can find directions and more information about the Park at
the following web site:

[BVARC] Antennas for the Quad Club Mega Field Day 2018

2019-04-13 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Just spoke to Bill Cordell, W5VOM, who is coordinating the antennas for our
Mega Field day. Here is what he said about what is going to be erected for
Field Day.

"We have your triband beam antenna set for CW, two Mosley Shorty 40's (one
for CW and one for SSB); Triband for SSB; and triband for digital and a
40/80 dipole for digital. Glen and I will try to head up the RTTY/FT8
radios.. There will be the big man lift for the CW guys, the 40 ft man lift
for the phone antennas and we will use Hardwick's portable mast for digital"
W5VOM.

There will be three sets of antennas erected. One for CW operation, one for
SSB and a third for digital including FT8. Each set of antennas will have
the ability to operate 10, 15,20, 40 and 80 meters. Come help with antenna
erection and feed line installation on the afternoon before FD and in the
morning of FD. We can use your help.

If you want to learn about antennas and feed lines, Rick Hiller, W5RH, our
antenna Guru, has agreed to hold short classes at FD site on how these
antennas work. More information on these classes will be sent later.

Allen, N5XZ, will circulate a sign up sheet for operating time in the near
future. We have 25+ people signed up so far. We can always use some more.
Please sign up with Allen if you have not done so.

COME JOIN US, EVEN FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS, AT THE MEGA FIELD DAY.

Eddie,

I will be out of town this weekend. Curt, WG5H, who has agreed to help with the
organization of the next GHH event. He will be attending the Sunday meeting. He
and I are trying to get some people together to form a team for the next GHH.
Your help will be crucial. Please say hello to Curt.

You had mentioned that you had a list of vendors and their contact information.
Curt and I will be going to Dayton and intend to talk to some of them to see if
we can sign them up. It would be great if you can share that list with us.

the people who attended it seem to enjoy it. Congratulations to all the

I thought it was a great Hamfest and I didn't get an opportunity to help this
year. So I guess I am just a member. No offense taken, but I am sure
condescending comments could have a negative affect on getting more people
involved.

As a club we should value all our members. They pay dues and I see allot of
people doing all they can. My thoughts is that is perfectly fine. If I spent
time wondering why other people weren't involved I would be wasting my time in
which I could be learning CW.

Personally I have done lots of Volunteer work over the years Professionally and
in the Hobby and it is always more work than reward and every time I do it, it
is because I like to do it and I ended it about right there.

The Ballon team is always a fun bunch to watch. The TDXS booth was nice as was
the soldering station. The Testing table is always a fun place to hang out.
Food was well done this year. The tail gating had a nice selection of stuff.
Website was great. Positives across the board. The state even did there part
with construction and signs. :) Finding Hamfest should always be the first
challenge of the day.

I even had a nice looking lady sell me another Navy Hat... :)

Hamfest is a TON of work for the board, volunteers , vendors, and clubs alike.
All who deserve more appreciation than they will ever get. Big THANK YOU to
all that supported the event, and onto Next year.

What we could be doing is using social media after the fact to let other hams
know what they missed, followed by the dates for next year.

Have Fun,

Jeff

Re: [BVARC] [tdxs-list] Field Day 2019 Operators Needed - sign up at Hamfest

2019-03-23 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
Thank you ALL for a great response during Hamfest. We signed up 22 people to
operate during FD. Some experts and some newbies.

A lot of you commented about learning from experts during FD. That is a great
idea. We can do this by including some training in N1MM and K3 radios before
start of FD. Then, during FD, we can let the people listen in on the CW QSOs.
And, for SSB operation, we can assist by typing in the information in N1MM to
help the operator.

FD is a great time for learning and mentoring others. Come learn all about
putting up antennas, setting up the rigs and operating. Let us not forget about
tear down after FD. We will need your help.

Please spread the word around about our Quad Club Mega Field Day. More
information about FD will follow in the future.

[BVARC] Field Day 2019 Operators Needed - sign up at Hamfest

2019-03-22 Thread NIzar Mullani via BVARC
Our Mega Quad Club Field Day event is ON - again. We will have 10 or more
stations on the air with three sets of towers and antennas covering 10
through 80 meters. Everyone is welcome to join us for the FD. You do not
have to be a member of any club. It is a great time to learn how to put up
antennas, how to operate or just meet other hams and do some face-time
rag-chews. More details about the FD will be presented later by the
organizing committees.

We are signing up operators for this Mega event. Please stop by at the TDXS
table (opposite the ARRL tables) during the Houston Hamfest and sign up as
an operator with Doug, WB5TKI. We are looking for operators in the area of
CW, SSB, RTTY and possibly FT8 operation. Allen, K5XZ, will coordinate the
final operating schedule for FD at a later time.
