Re: [BVARC] Field day thoughts...

2024-05-15 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
Work on organization - Allow people take the lead for tasks, areas, or
activity's - Provide the list of leads to all other leads and volunteers, so
they can work together with out being forced to deal with one bottle neck, that
may or may not respond to calls or emails.
 - All these leads and the tasks areas they are leading need to be listed on
any web site, flier, and meeting notes.    That way if others are trying to
reach some one they are not reduced to calling the one and only phone number
that is listed on all BVARC docs, webs site that always goes to voice mail.
 - If you are a lead, have a plan, with back ups, of what ever you are leading.

  - Some examples of bad past planning
     - Planning meetings being moved around all the time and as there
was no list of volunteers, people were left off the meeting invites
- PA system arrives 2 hours after start of event. - 2nd day of the
event and people still asking how to pay for their tables that should have been
paid for before they even allowed to setup
 - The event was over but the lead of the tear down group spent
over 90 minutes on the phone trying to find out what needed to be done.    Due
to this several volunteers gave up and went home.  Once breakdown did start
the instructions were unclear and not complete.    As a result to many tables
were broken down and put away, had to be set up again.

Just my take on things, do with it what you wnat.

Next question - "What are my goals?"Again - "I want to test our skills as
Emergency communicators. The level of success is measured by how many contacts,
and who I show it to."
That was followed by "When I am done, who will care?"That answer was -- "That

involved in the hobby and leave a positive spot in the history of radio"
That kind of refocused a few thoughts I have been talking about to people and
realized that I am on the right path, just that everyone words it differently.
We have the contest guy - they want pointsWe have the social guys - they want
to be with their kind
andWe have the guy who - let me show them what I can do.
With those thoughts in mind, I propose the following1) bring the GOTA station
to the main area - maybe in what I call the Fish Tank or the main entrance2)
make the conference are the class room3) have people to volunteer to bring Home
Brew items to display on entrance4) have a 1 hr block for people to describe
their Home Brew5) We have someone designated as the "Youth Mentor" -- This
person would be dedicated to welcoming youth that come and maybe introduce them
to members and eventually become a point of contact for them6) We have a 1hr
block for those who do our "Engineering" and make sure things work, take credit
for their work and describe a bit of what they do.7) Also have a 1 hr block for
Q and let our group share knowledge on the question or even maybe have a
lookup on web time.
With those steps, I hope people see what we do better and give others that are
behind the scene a chance to thump their chest..Heck, maybe even Daphne and
team can talk about cooking for a large group .. Maybe
I plan on bringing a projector to shine on the wall, so we can all see what is
going on on a computer that will be stationed in the main area too.
Now with that said -- does anyone have any thoughts? (BE NICE I know there
is a guy watching this reflector. ) And please do not hold back anything, I
want this year to be the year of BVARC.
And if you have thoughts about what Field day is, please let me know - let's
try to see where that fits in too.

Re: [BVARC] Old 150watt DC to AC converter.

2024-05-15 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
Yep I have to agree, I'm tossing it and just ordered a new Besttek 300 watt
full sine wave inverter from Amazon.    It was about $43.00 and had several
good reviews by the review BOT's on there and you tube
Robert - thanks for the suggestion for the 12 to 19v adapter made by Tarrus,
But i decided on a new invert as I could use it for other things as well.
Thanks for every one else that replied.

More than likely using a 105W inverter for 130W actual power demand would not
be very healthy neither for your inverter nor for the device. When they say
it's a 150W inverter, they usually emit the fact that it would not be able to
deliver that much power with the same quality since wave (or simulated sine
wave) for that power output for long. On the other hand, the same goes for your
laptop charger. If if is 130 Watts it is very very unlikely it would be
outputting, in fact even consuming that much power. So it's a coin toss unless
you measure the actual values or can find some real life measurements on the
web.
All these aside, modern switching power supplies are really and I mean really
good at what they do. So they will compensate for a lot of variables on the
input side and will still be able to produce 19V 6.8A (which I assume are the
rough values for your adapter based on "130 Watt" rating). The worst case
scenario I can imagine is either your inverter getting too hot and shutting
itself (or the very unlikely scenario burning itself out) or your adapter
getting a bit hot and turning itself off after a while.
If you can find an oscilloscope, even a very cheap one, you can actually see
the power output of the inverter off and on load. That would give you the best
idea. If not, just plug them together, and instead of maybe using your PC, try
another load (a DC soldering iron, a variable load tester, a giant resistor, an
old laptop etc. And see how long it would work without any issues. Chances are
they would work just fine. You can also use an RMS multimeter to see what it
does to an extent if you cannot find an oscilloscope.
But my final recommendation is this, a cheap modern 200W inverter can be bought
for about $20. Is it worth going through all that trouble just to make sure
your 15 year old inverter would not harm your PC?
I wish I had some time to help you on site to bring an oscilloscope and test it
but seriously, I'd just get a new one and use the old one for something that is
not sensitive.
Thank you and best regards,

I used a UPS that had a modified sine wave inverter and it made my laptop
charger run excessively hot. That was one time during a Field Day event, so I
don't know if it would have shortened the life of the charger. Currently I am
using a pure sine wave inverter made by Samlex and the laptop charger plugged
into that inverter feels like room temperature.

I'm guessing it's a modified sinewave inverter due to the age.     Will this

I will repeat what Sean stated, come out to one of the POTA events that happens
around the Houston area.   While there are several groups doing these I have
found that the (facebook group) Houston POTA group is the most active.  During
these POTA events you will be able to get on the air with the help of people
there.   You will also be able to try out different radios.    The next POTA
event is April 20th at Stephen F. Austin State Park which is west of Katy.
They normally run from 10am to 5 pm.   You dont have to bring anything, but a
chair and drinks for your self could be helpful.

get answers to your questions and a little hands on experience so you too will
become confident in your knowledge and ability. A few places to keep an eye out

Hello all,
Here's another reminder that we will be going to Brazos Bend State Park this
Sunday February 25th doing Parks On The AIr (POTA). If you're interested in
participating or just hanging out with us, we're asking folks to come by
between 10am and 5pm. If you'd like to help set up you are welcome to come a
little early. We will be located at the far end of the Elm Lake part of the
park. Call us on 146.520 MHz simplex if you would like to reach out to us while
in the park for directions.
One more reminder: There will be a pre-POTA net on 40m run by Sean N5LNK who
will be NCS for the net. The approximate frequency for the net will be 7.265
MHz (this will vary so please turn your VFO if you don't hear them there) at
8pm local time on Saturday February 24th (tomorrow).
The important details:
   - Park access is $7. Ask for a day use area pass.
   - IF you have a Texas State Park Pass, then admission for the day is FREE.
   - We will have about 4 HF radios (40m, 20m, 15m, 10m, and possibly 17m or
80m) that you can use if you don't have your own. So all you need to bring is
yourself, some water, and maybe some snacks.
   - If you'd like to bring your own radio, we have a few antennas you can use
and the appropriate filters. But again, you don't need to bring any equipment.
   - Technician class licensees ARE WELCOME! You CAN operate the stations on
ALL HF bands that are available and get POTA credit for contacts you make. You
will be required to use the call sign of the club or any other operator on-site
with the appropriate band privileges (ask me or Anthony W5LIC for details upon
arrival).
   - If you're a Tech class license holder and would like to operate on 10m you
may do so under your own call sign if the station is open (10m band conditions
have been quite favorable lately).
   - Of course, you do not have to operate the radios, you can just come out
for a fun time with your fellow hams.
   - 10 contacts are all that are required to "activate" the park. You can log
with paper, or with any apps you prefer (we recommend the HAMRS App).
   - Sign up on the POTA.app website to upload your logs after the event.

When:Sunday February 25th 202410am - 5pm
Where:Brazos Bend State Park21901 FM 762
Needville, TX 77461

If you've been curious about trying CW, FT8, or Winlink (VARA HF, 2m Packet
etc.) we will have those as optional modes you can try. If you can't make this
event, Anthony and I will be doing an event ourselves in April. It's a lot of
fun, and we hope to see you out there this Sunday or any other time we're out
at the parks. Contact me or Anthony (W5LIC) if you have any questions about
this event.

Also if I drag my radio, battery, computer out to a park, you bet I'm going to
use my call on my gear.

3) Afternoon with some great friends
4) opportunity to welcome new folks to HAM and to BVARC..

Suzanne and I bought BVARC banners and other stuff out of our own pockets
to help bring the POTA MASTERS in as a BVARC EVENT.. All has been working
great as far as I knew..

I have posted on this before I think,
but again at the last BOARD meeting there was
some questions about using the club call, about illegal operations and other
questions a board member(s) posed..    even though the board did
set a budget to help POTA ..  the masters felt disrespected and .. well

The POTA MASTERS got butt hurt...
I dont blame them, they dont use BVARC equipment, they use their own radios
(and other volunteer radios)..

Like I said before, BVARC NEEDS POTA, more then POTA needs BVARC.
POTA is super popular, I think our board members and especially our PRESIDENT

These POTA guys are SUPERSTARS!

BVARC needs to make this a priority..
If you do not agree or do not understand POTA
please GO TO POTA EVENT..  it is true ham radio at its finest..

I ask our board to REALIZE how important this is,
buy a couple POTA radios, really make it a BVARC EVENT support these guys..

And I ask our POTA MASTERS to take the stupid abuse for a minute
and forgive the MORONS that hurt your feelings and lets have some fun..

[BVARC] Power supply for home

2023-11-22 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
I'm looking for a power supply to power my radios at home. I currently have
a Yaesu FTM-400 and a Yaesu FTDX-10.    The FTM-400 draws a max of 12 amps and
the FTDX-10 draws 21 amps max.   I do not see ever transmitting on both at the
same time, with that I feel a 25amp power supply should be fine.  I'm looking
at the Astron SS-30M-AP  power supply which provides 25 amps normal and 30 amps
peak. The other option is the Astron SS-50M-AP which provides 40 amps
normal and 50 amps max.

Is there a reason why to go with the larger power supply?

Thanks

Re: [BVARC] POTA - Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge

2023-11-20 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
Great radioing, great food, great people.    Just some of the things that
happen at these events.
- Ability to try different radios  ICOM 7300 & 7100, YAESU 891, 991, and
FTDX-10 or bring your own.
- Ability to try different antennas, DC Commander,  Hamsticks, 17ft whip, and
EFHW's.
- With all these different antennas learn how to tune them with different
analyzers such as the NANO VNA or RigExpert- Ability to work different bands
you may not have access to at your shack.
- Try different logging software packages, or ask questions about their
features.   HAMRS, Log Book of the World, QRZ, N3FJP's Amateur Contact Log and
many others.- Learn about Digital modes and the related software like WSIT-X
and Grid Tracker.
These are just the topics I heard or was included in, there were many others as
well.    If you have questions this is a great event to come to as  some one
will likely have the gear there to show off and provide examples with.

This event really is a Ham Radio Boot Camp with out the yelling and exercise.

Lets see you at the next one

the question isnt the event itself.  hams can meet anywhere they want to.

issue to me is simply bvarcs sponsoring an adult only event.   all events,

I have built the ARRL EFHW kit.   It works fine.   The kit come with wire to
make to work for 10-40 meters.    You can get a longer wire and it will work
for 10-80 meters.

That said MOST HOA rules state you can dow what ever in your back yard as long
as it cant be seen from the front street.   So with that I would suggest one of
the DX Commander antenna's.    You can set these up in the back yerd and odds
are you wont see it from the street..

Hi everyone,

Like many hams, I live in a HOA restricted subdivision, so a
permanent HF antenna is not practical. I have been thinking for a while about
EFHW as a temporary antenna which I can set up and take down quickly. My
question has probably been asked many times so please forgive this relatively
new member for asking again. The question is do you use an EFHW antenna and is
it a good solution for HOA limited subdivisions?

ARRL sells EFHW antenna kit for $80. It is cheap and certainly seems like it
will be fun to build. It works up to 40m, but I suppose it will be possible to
extend it to 80m with a loading coil. I am considering MFJ-1910 33-ft
telescoping fiberglass mast with the antenna. As I like more choices, can
anyone suggest other options/alternatives for the mast?

Also, any suggestions for a good and reasonably priced (< $400) antenna
analyzer?

Thanks,

I want to remind you all that we will have another great BVARC POTA event
coming up at Brazos Bend State Park (September 24th 10am - 5pm).
It should be a really great time with friends, some delicious food, and of
course some fun on the radio.

For this Sunday at Brazos Bend State Park we expect to set up near Elm Lake. Be
sure to get a map and ask for directions to the site at the park headquarters
when you come in, and you can also reach out to us on 146.520MHz FM Simplex
while in the vicinity of the park.

The important details:
* Park access is $6/ Adult. Ask for a day use area pass. More info on:
tpwd.texas.gov
* IF you have a Texas State Park Pass, then admission for the day is FREE.
* ALSO, if you are over 65 years old, you can request a Senior Partial
Texas Parklands Passport to get half-off of park admission (rounded to the
nearest dollar). Speak to the Park Rangers when you arrive or visit
tpwd.texas.gov for details.
* We will have at least 4 HF radios (40m, 20m, 15m, 10m, and possibly 17m
or 80m) that you can use if you don't have your own. So all you need to bring
is yourself, some water, and maybe some snacks.
* If you'd like to bring your own radio, we have a few antennas you can use
and the appropriate filters. But again, you don't need to bring any equipment.
* Technician class licensees ARE WELCOME! You CAN operate the stations on
ALL HF bands that are available and get POTA credit for contacts you make. You
will be required to use the club call sign (ask me or Kori (WX5KR) for details
upon arrival).
* If you're a Tech class license holder and would like to operate on 10m
you may do so under your own call sign if the station is open (10m band
conditions have been favorable lately).
* Of course, you do not have to operate the radios, you can just come out
for a fun time with your fellow hams.
* 10 contacts are all that are required to "activate" the park. You can log
with paper, or with any apps you prefer (we recommend the HAMRS App).
* Sign up on the POTA.app website to upload your logs after the event.
If you've been curious about trying CW, FT8, or Winlink (VARA HF, 2m Packet
etc.) we will have those as optional modes you can try (more to come in the
future). As before, if you can't make this event, we are doing them every
month. POTA is a lot of fun, and we hope to see you out there with us this
weekend. Contact me or Kori (WX5KR) if you have any questions about this event.

See you soon, 73!

Re: [BVARC] HF antenna and coax

2023-08-06 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
Venkata, I'm also new to this as well.   What I have been using is very close
to the MFJ 1979, its a 17ft whip sold by Wolf river coils.   They sell the
whip, plus several mounting options.   I have their large tripod set up.
They also have a coil they make that you can put under the whip antenna for 40
meters.

The whip antenna, large tripod, shorty 40 coil and Radial Kit was about $150
shipped.   This will give you 10 - 40 meters.   It takes me 10 minutes at most
to set up that antenna, lay out the radials, and run the coax.

Note even using the large tripod i suggest you get some tent stakes to hold the
tripod in place.  With out the stakes the wind blow it over once and thats an
easy way to break the whip antenna.

The one down side to this antenna is you have to adjust the length for each
band you want to use.   So if you set it up for 20 meters (fully extended) and
then decide you want to work 15meter you have to go out and shorten the whip
and check the SWR for that new length.  Here are the lengths for each band,

20 meter  204 inch’s
17 meter  159 inchs
15 meter 134 inchs
12 meter 120 inchs
10 meter 101 inchs

For Coax I suggest ARB as they are local (off 290)   The ARB240 cable would be
a great option for you. You can even get it in different colors.

http://www.wolfrivercoils.com

https://www.amazon.com/JFOUTU-8pc-Pack-Galvanized-Fluorescent-Pitching/dp/B09JBFJ1MW/ref=sr_1_14?crid=1HPPIW1BGK3NL=tent+stakes=1691383446=tent%2Caps%2C190=8-14

Note when using the whip antenna, you will need a way to check the SWR to
ensure you have the antenna at the correct length.  Yes I check it every time I
set up my antenna.   For this I use a Nano VNA.    This is about the lowest
cost way to check you SWR and it does other things as well.    R & L
electronics is the best place to get a Nano VNA.   When I said I can set up my
whip in 10 minutes that includes checking the SWR with my NANO VNA.

Im in Oregon now, using this set up with my DX-FT10 radio. I have reached from
AK to FL on voice and all over the world with FT8.   Thats with just owning my
radio for a month now.

Let me know if you have any questions?

Hello all,
I am working on setting up a temporary HF antenna that I can setup or take down
when not in use. For this, I am exploring MFJ 1979 telescope antenna. I am not
sure if this is the right choice yet. My idea was to use some mount(yet to
figure this out) in the backyard, run the cable inside the home when I want to
use HF. In addition, when I am visiting some park, planning to mount if using
some mag mount. I don’t have much of a backyard and wanted to see if this
antenna can be used at home and when I am visiting places. With this info, I
have few questions. Please bear with me as I am absolutely new to Ham and might
ask dumb questions. While reading, one thing I realized is that, the antenna
depends on the bands I wish to use. Well, at the moment, I want to start with
something that can get me on air for commonly used frequencies where I can
listen in and learn how to use the radio. At the  moment, all I have is a HF
transceiver with builtin tuner.

1) Is 1979 a good antenna? It appears it is around $70 and I am assuming this
can get me started without breaking any bank.
2) Coax…looking at the options, this seems like a candy store and I can’t
figure out which one. I am guessing something around 50 ft in length might work
and my limited research shows LMR 240 might be good option. Is this true or
should I find a better alternative?
3) Any suggestions on mounts for the antenna that I can use in the backyard?

Ps: Thank you to Ed and Richard for pointing me in the right direction at
Fulshear farmer’s market. I am also researching on end fed antenna but this
will be a build/diy project.

Thank you for all the guidance and suggestions.

Hello everyone!

I want to remind you all that we will have another great BVARC POTA event
coming up at Stephen F. Austin State Park THIS SUNDAY (July 23rd 10am - 5pm).
It's going to be a really hot one this weekend, temperatures have been over
100F for the past week or so, but if the forecast is to be believed, it might
dip just a little to double digits for us on Sunday. There's a slight chance of
rain later in the day, but we will be there and prepared for whatever happens.
We'll have some great food as well, with our usual complement of sausages,
chips, and LOTS of water. It should be a really great time with friends, some
delicious food, and of course some fun on the radio!

Photos from our last POTA event at Brazos Bend SP in May. Marc KI5ZHO made us
some fantastic fajitas, and Jayant KG5LJZ came by to see how we run our event
(see his article about BVARC POTA on the Johnson Space Center ARC website here).

For this Sunday at Stephen F. Austin we expect to set up at the day use area
near the front of the park (the first left after the ranger station). You can
ask the park rangers how to find us, or reach out to us on 146.520MHz FM
Simplex while in the vicinity of the park.

The important details:
* Park access is $5.
* We will have at least 4 HF radios (40m, 20m, 15m, 10m, and possibly 17m
or 80m) that you can use if you don't have your own.
You
will be required to use the club call sign (ask me or Anthony W5LIC for details
upon arrival).

JULY BVARC POTA EVENT:
Sunday July 23rd 2023, 10am - 5pm
Stephen F. Austin State Park
    Park Road 38
    San Felipe, TX 77473

If you've been curious about trying CW, FT8, or Winlink (VARA HF, 2m Packet
etc.) we will have those as optional modes you can try (more to come in the
future). As before, if you can't make this event, we are doing them every
month. POTA is a lot of fun, and we hope to see you out there with us this
weekend. Contact me or Anthony (W5LIC) if you have any questions about this
event.

I want to say a special thanks to all those wonderful folks who attended our
last event at Brazos Bend State Park in May:

Also as you stated this computer is for ham radio use, odds are any software

[BVARC] BVARC POTA @ Galveston Island SP 3/26 Traffic alert

2023-03-25 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
For those planning to attend the POTA event and use I-45 south bound. I-45
South bound is closed down to 1 lane between Bay Area Blvd and Hwy 518 in the
Clearlake area due to construction.   It will be closed till Monday morning.
This is causing major backups.    I suggest finding a different route if you
had planned to use I-45 south bound.    Hwy 146 Between Nasa Road one and Kemah
is also under construction and will be backed up as well.    This is where
Goggle Maps could save you a hour or more in your travel times.

[BVARC] Do you have a Yaesu FTDX10 or Icom 7300 radio?

2023-03-10 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
I'm a new club member, and looking at buying a Yaesu FTDX10 or ICOM 7300, but
would like to get some hands on experience with them first to help chose one or
the other.   If you have either of these radio and are wiling to show it off
and maybe make some contacts with it I would be very thankful.

While i have watched many you tube videos on these radios, I am a hands on kind
of person.

If you have either of these radios, and are willing to help out a new person my
email is listed below.

I have materials like steel tubing, aluminum tubing, pvc,  wire rope shackles,

two steel 20' tubes up with guy wires would be easy enough, maybe even could
get them as high as 30ft, and this is great for 10m 20m, but when I start to

only attempt it if I was really bored and living in the desert.   I did order
an antenna from a website that builds ground radial vertical antennas, for
10-80m,  I assume this will work in the USA.  and maybe an occasional DX on the
perfect days,   Obviously I have been reading too many internet sites and my
information may be very flawed so I am asking yall as I know you know the truth.

what is the absolute minimum I need to run some 10,20,40M dipoles in a park.

[BVARC] EFHW antenna kit that ARRL sales

2022-05-31 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
What are your thought's on the EFHW antenna kit that ARRL sales. This will be
my first HF antenna and I would like to build it my self.

Cost is $69.00 from the ARRL.

This is a kit by HF Kits out of the UK. This kit is the 4 band version (40, 20,
15 and 10) with a 66 foot wire run. I have been looking at sourcing the parts
my self, but from what I have found I would have to buy the parts from several
different places, so with trying to find every thing, and the shipping cost
it's just easier and cheaper to just order this kit.

Who know's if I build it and get it up with good SWR reading's I might even buy
a HF radio.

[BVARC] Looking for parts to build a Balun

2022-05-03 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
OK where do you get your supply's to build your antenna's and parts?   I
looking to build a 4:1 Balum

FT-240-43 Ferrite Toroid
3M Glass Cloth Electrical Tape 27
PTFE 18 awg wire (2 colors)   Open to other options.

Do you have a source for good PTFE 18 awg wire (or other options) that sales it
by the foot.    Not looking to buy a whole roll as I just dont need that much

Thanks
