[BVARC] Field Day coming up in 2 weeks!

2024-06-07 Thread Allen Brier via BVARC
All,

2024 Field Day is coming up in only two weeks! Be sure to sign up for
operating slots.your favorite slot may be taken by someone else if you
don't! https://tinyurl.com/5bukx37k

And still looking for one more K3/K3S to have as a backup radio (and power
supply). Contact me or add to the list:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uc_xqVcm28uSl0d6fCryzMtX3R3cuHoDJFBS
_uw8VLA/edit?usp=sharing

I will also be supplying the generator again this year. It is always good to
have a backup there, too. If you have one, let me or Richard Bonica know.

73,

Allen R. Brier N5XZ

Re: [BVARC] Field day question

2024-05-22 Thread David Morefield via BVARC
During the storm, I was on the CRHRC Net and also the Houston TG on DMR. The DMR TG was full of good info and I met several people. It was nice to be able to talk to folks as I sat in my closet ready for the impending doom. Luckily, no major damage at home, but my office got thrashed. For those who are not into DMR, I highly recommend it. The repeaters we have in this area are simply amazing. I am checking video this morning and I am gobsmacked with what it captured. David MorefieldNØLUV281.960.5253Check out my Photographyhttps://www.fluffyshotme.comOn May 22, 2024, at 07:59, M Reiter via BVARC wrote:sorry brother, I live at magnum and 290 and could have gotten out my HT for the latest gossip.  the transmission lines behind your office are still being rebuilt.MarcKI5ZHOOn Fri, May 17, 2024 at 3:32 PM Richard Bonica via BVARC wrote:To all,Does anyone mind if I take an hour on sat to run a round table on emergency response to incident?I now have a personal experience since my office is at Magnum and 290. Not only do I not have a problem with your having a class at Field Day
but I think it is a superb idea.  After all, FD is supposedly an
emergency preparedness event.  However, it must not interfere with the
ongoing on-the-air operations.  A large faction of the club like to
make as many Qs as possible.  Yes, I will do CW, but I'm very casual
about it.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your approach
to managing field day.  Yes, there are a lot of members who are on
"auto-pilot" and they know what they are doing.  It is imperative that
you track all the various tasks so none are overlooked and on-track.
This is a project that needs to be actively managed, and I don't know
if you have an MBA or you dropped out of elementary school but
regardless I like what I saw at the meeting.  I trust that you are
using some sort of Project Management Document.  I was Chairperson of
the Hamfest for about 10 years, taking it from 20 tables to 220
tables; I used an Excel spread sheet listing all the tasks on separate
lines, with columns (or other) to list the task leader, status,
deadlines, critical action items, comments & notes without
micromanaging.  However, there are 9 ways to skin a cat but the
project management document must follow normally accepted business
management practices to be successful.  I specifically like that you
are letting the people who know what they are doing, do so rather than
coming in like "a bull in a china closet" and "improving" across the
board from the status quo.  It's best to pretty much, but not
completely, do it the way it has been done with some tweaking the
first year and then possibly making some significant changes (if you
deem necessary) the 2nd year.  I also like that you want to return to
the Firemen's Training Field next year as it has a lot of advantages
with a lot of room, sometimes with separate buildings, a lot of
"skyhooks" for antennas, etc.

Oh by the way, it might behoove you to go to Museum Ships Weekend
which occurs 3 weeks before FD (May 31, June 1 and 2), assuming that
the Pelican Island Causeway bridge has been reopened by then.  We have
long ago dubbed this "A precursor to Field Day."  See a brief
description in a block on the BVARC homepage; more detailed info will
be published via the reflector as well as the BVARC web page within a
week.  Also, you can check with Mark Janzer (Chairman) or me for more
info.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to FD-2024.

Re: [BVARC] Field day question

2024-05-17 Thread John Chauvin via BVARC
Richard,I am responding only to you with a c.c. to Mike Hardwick.  I hate it
when people needlessly "reply to all."
Not only do I not have a problem with your having a class at Field Day but I
think it is a superb idea.  After all, FD is supposedly an emergency
preparedness event.  However, it must not interfere with the ongoing on-the-air
operations.  A large faction of the club like to make as many Qs as possible.
Yes, I will do CW, but I'm very casual about it.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your approach to
managing field day.  Yes, there are a lot of members who are on "auto-pilot"
and they know what they are doing.  It is imperative that you track all the
various tasks so none are overlooked and on-track.  This is a project that
needs to be actively managed, and I don't know if you have an MBA or you
dropped out of elementary school but regardless I like what I saw at the
meeting.  I trust that you are using some sort of Project Management Document.
I was Chairperson of the Hamfest for about 10 years, taking it from 20 tables
to 220 tables; I used an Excel spread sheet listing all the tasks on separate
lines, with columns (or other) to list the task leader, status, deadlines,
critical action items, comments & notes without micromanaging.  However, there
are 9 ways to skin a cat but the project management document must follow
normally accepted business management practices to be successful.  I
specifically like that you are letting the people who know what they are doing,
do so rather than coming in like "a bull in a china closet" and "improving"
across the board from the status quo.  It's best to pretty much, but not

[BVARC] Field day question

Re: [BVARC] Field day thoughts...

2024-05-15 Thread Richard Bonica via BVARC
Well - I agree...
But I am measuring this year on the following:

1) Did everyone leave under their own power... And with all the appengages
they came with.
2) Did at least 1/2 the attendees smile?
3) Did we kick butt getting points?
4) Are we leaving the weekend talking about what we did or do we need 2
aspirin?
5) Did Daphnie's food get to Richard (Sorry - that was a personal mesure)
6) In the after action report, do we need to change a lot?
7) Did we ROBS for everyone?
 R) Respect and recognize everyone
 O) Give opportunities
 B) Make everyone feel like they belong
 S) Make everyone feel safe
8) Did everyone get a chance to speak up and be heard?
9) As a club, did we get to share a meal and social time with each other?

I come from the Emergency handling and mitigation - Every exercise and
event is a way to plan and be ready for a true incident. After Action
Reports are important to me too.
The only thing I want to make sure of is that people give feedback and we
sort through emotional things and respond to the actual things we can fix.
When I do the after action report, I do not just say "well - this
sucked..." I also want to give a possible solution and why.

I hope that was clear, I do not want to throw out thoughts, but want to
make sure we are also working on things we can really fix.

I was thinking about field day just now. I asked myself "Why do you do
field day?" Well, that voice in my head answered back...

"You are there to be with people that have a common goal and to show

Next question - "What are my goals?"
Again - "I want to test our skills as Emergency communicators. The
level of success is measured by how many contacts, and who I show it to."

That was followed by "When I am done, who will care?"
That answer was -- "That is why I am inviting Schools and Government to
see and hopefully get them involved in the hobby and leave a positive spot
 in the history of radio"

That kind of refocused a few thoughts I have been talking about to
people and realized that I am on the right path, just that everyone words
 it differently.
We have the contest guy - they want points
We have the social guys - they want to be with their kind
 and
We have the guy who - let me show them what I can do.

With those thoughts in mind, I propose the following
 1) bring the GOTA station to the main area - maybe in what I call the
Fish Tank or the main entrance
 2) make the conference are the class room
 3) have people to volunteer to bring Home Brew items to display on
 entrance
 4) have a 1 hr block for people to describe their Home Brew
 5) We have someone designated as the "Youth Mentor" -- This person
would be dedicated to welcoming youth that come and maybe introduce them to
members and eventually become a point of contact for them
 6) We have a 1hr block for those who do our "Engineering" and make sure
things work, take credit for their work and describe a bit of what they do.
 7) Also have a 1 hr block for Q and let our group share knowledge on
the question or even maybe have a lookup on web time.

With those steps, I hope people see what we do better and give others
that are behind the scene a chance to thump their chest..
Heck, maybe even Daphne and team can talk about cooking for a large
 group .. Maybe

I plan on bringing a projector to shine on the wall, so we can all see
what is going on on a computer that will be stationed in the main area too.

Now with that said -- does anyone have any thoughts? (BE NICE I
know there is a guy watching this reflector. ) And please do not hold back
anything, I want this year to be the year of BVARC.
And if you have thoughts about what Field day is, please let me know -
let's try to see where that fits in too.

Well , I have -- as a matter of fact everyone has stepped up and helped.

Again - and I can not say this enough

THANK YOU TO ALL THAT ARE HELPING ALREADY.

Everyone has their space and is doing what they can. I am letting them do
their job. I am simply pointing out what is missing and someone grabs it. I
have only had to ask.

BVARC is an example of people that if asked do what is needed and might
bark a bit but get the job done ..

Work on organization - Allow people take the lead for tasks, areas, or
activity's - Provide the list of leads to all other leads and volunteers, so
they can work together with out being forced to deal with one bottle neck, that
may or may not respond to calls or emails.
 - All these leads and the tasks areas they are leading need to be listed on
any web site, flier, and meeting notes.    That way if others are trying to
reach some one they are not reduced to calling the one and only phone number
that is listed on all BVARC docs, webs site that always goes to voice mail.
 - If you are a lead, have a plan, with back ups, of what ever you are leading.

  - Some examples of bad past planning
     - Planning meetings being moved around all the time and as there
was no list of volunteers, people were left off the meeting invites
- PA system arrives 2 hours after start of event. - 2nd day of the
event and people still asking how to pay for their tables that should have been
paid for before they even allowed to setup
 - The event was over but the lead of the tear down group spent
over 90 minutes on the phone trying to find out what needed to be done.    Due
to this several volunteers gave up and went home.  Once breakdown did start
the instructions were unclear and not complete.    As a result to many tables
were broken down and put away, had to be set up again.

Just my take on things, do with it what you wnat.

Great input Rich! I'm a believer in doing a survey after each major event. Do we know people's feedback? How do we me sure if the event was a success? We should not do it based on our personal thoughts but on what people are looking for. Re: [BVARC] Field day thoughts...

2024-05-15 Thread Joe Vaught via BVARC
I met with a new business partner Tuesday for lunch on a business opportunity.
The gentleman is the owner of a small computer manufacturing company in
Houston.
As we were wrapping up he asked me If I knew anyone who could help him train
his troop (Troop #11, 100 years old) to pass the Technician test and become
active operators! They have a dozen or so active scouts. Mr. Glen Wallin just
bought a YAESU hand held and wants to get his license and lead his troop into
HAM radio.

Since my new radio has yet to be on the air I thought we could put a class
together. He flew off his chair when I mentioned POTA; Right up the scouts
alley!!

How should I proceed?
Have another scout troop in mind as well.

To All,,,
I was thinking about field day just now. I asked myself "Why do you do field
day?" Well, that voice in my head answered back...

"You are there to be with people that have a common goal and to show your
skills."

Next question - "What are my goals?"
Again - "I want to test our skills as Emergency communicators. The level of
success is measured by how many contacts, and who I show it to."

That was followed by "When I am done, who will care?"
That answer was -- "That is why I am inviting Schools and Government to see and
hopefully get them involved in the hobby and leave a positive spot in the
history of radio"

That kind of refocused a few thoughts I have been talking about to people and
realized that I am on the right path, just that everyone words it differently.
We have the contest guy - they want points
We have the social guys - they want to be with their kind
and
We have the guy who - let me show them what I can do.

With those thoughts in mind, I propose the following
1) bring the GOTA station to the main area - maybe in what I call the Fish Tank
or the main entrance
2) make the conference are the class room
3) have people to volunteer to bring Home Brew items to display on entrance
4) have a 1 hr block for people to describe their Home Brew
5) We have someone designated as the "Youth Mentor" -- This person would be
dedicated to welcoming youth that come and maybe introduce them to members and
eventually become a point of contact for them
6) We have a 1hr block for those who do our "Engineering" and make sure things
work, take credit for their work and describe a bit of what they do.
7) Also have a 1 hr block for Q and let our group share knowledge on the
question or even maybe have a lookup on web time.

With those steps, I hope people see what we do better and give others that are
behind the scene a chance to thump their chest..
Heck, maybe even Daphne and team can talk about cooking for a large group ..
Maybe

I plan on bringing a projector to shine on the wall, so we can all see what is
going on on a computer that will be stationed in the main area too.

Now with that said -- does anyone have any thoughts? (BE NICE I know there
is a guy watching this reflector. ) And please do not hold back anything, I
want this year to be the year of BVARC.
And if you have thoughts about what Field day is, please let me know - let's
try to see where that fits in too.

Did anyone take any pictures during field day with BVARC at the fire training
facility? Ive looked at facebook and the email threads and the only pictures
Ive seen are a few drone shots of antennas.
If I missed a link, then whoops, apologies.. otherwise, Id love to see some
pics if someone has them in a publicly accessible repository.

Thanks
73/Chris/AC5CM

I always use the Silver Orbz these days.

John-AB5SS just started using the Yokohama balloons.

So we’ve had really good success with both.

Walter,

Which balloon did you use on this launch?

We launched another package earlier this morning, and it danced circles all

This is indeed VERY cool! I’m assuming that there is a high pressure over the
state that caused it to fly in that circle pattern… Or maybe it’s under control

Don't pay too much attention to the altitude as it takes a few solid packets to
create the accurate altitude. It's still over 49k right now. Working well.

Re: [BVARC] Field Day Balloon is now over Georgia, the state not the Country

2023-06-29 Thread Walter Holmes via BVARC
It’s still flying high.

Every now and then we get some inconsistent reporting, so we get some bad data
at times.

But yes, it’s still doing well.

Another in our group launched a balloon from the Johnson Space Center area
earlier this morning, that has been dong some crazy flight patterns, like the
one we launched Tuesday.

https://aprs.fi/#!mt=hybrid
<https://aprs.fi/#!mt=hybrid=13=a%2FAB5SS-12=604800=604800>
 =13=a%2FAB5SS-12=604800=604800 is John’s AB5SS Pico
tracker.

So plenty to watch for sure.

If you want to see ALL the ham radio balloons currently in the air, here’s a
quick link that you can zoom in and out on.

Always entertaining to say the least. 

With all the operators who do State QSO parties and other contests, why are not
more of you signed up for operating slots at FD?

This is a great opportunity to use antennas better than you have at home,
perhaps better radios, too, and do so with the possibility of mentoring by more
experienced ops.

Condx are likely to be good and I'm hoping the end of this hot spell doesn't
come with any FD rain.

The BVARC/KARS/TDXS FD is primarily organized by BVARC and they do a great job
of making it almost turn-key for the ops who come. The biggest missing thing
is Butts In Chairs - the rest is well organized.

Please make plans to come out.

Here is my propagation band plan, which you can compare to the open slots on
the sign up sheet at the link. Lots of great hours are open!

Re: [BVARC] Field Day 2023 Sign-up sheets!

2023-06-01 Thread Kori Rahman via BVARC
Chris,

Yes walk-ins will be worked into any open position on Field Day. There
should be volunteers to get you added to the sheet on-site. This way we can
guarantee certain times, bands, and modes to folks who are planning to be
there. Any remaining slots can be picked up the day of the event.

Thanks,

We see the totals. I think a more detailed breakdown of the score

Totals for SSB, FT4, FT8, CW, etc. on each band.
GOTA totals, also by band.
Bonus point breakdown
Anything else that is included in the bottom line.

on this yet, so I wanted to chime in and say congratulations to everyone.
There were SO MANY people who came out for us this year and made this
possible. We had BVARC, TDXS, KARS, and UHARC come together to represent
Houston area hams for this Field Day event. THANK YOU ALL! I also want to
make a quick shout out to our Field Day coordinator Anthony Morones

2022-11-12 Thread Rick Hiller via BVARC
The December 2022 QST has the Field Day results starting on page 60. Our
10A category results are on page 69. We are the only group reporting 10 A.

Results show us at 4318 QSO's146 participants and a final score of
17,442. Not too shabby. (in 2019 we had a score of 15,882 for a 6th place

I had a quick scan of the total score columns and it looked like we were
3rd place in total score. They did not list a top ten this year, or last

Re: [BVARC] Field Day

2022-06-24 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
What a 'BUMMER'! I was hoping to catch you again dozing off while calling
CQ! On a serious note, please get well soon and take care of the XYL.

I had the Delta version and it was bad! Hopefully, I am protected from the
new version going around.

[BVARC] Field Day

2022-06-24 Thread Allen Brier via BVARC
Field Day starts tomorrow for the Quad Club Field Day Event at Duhacsek Park
in Sugar Land. Help will be needed today for setup, operating and teardown
and everything else between. There are still many slots available in the
operating schedule, so please don't be shy to take a few. Sit down and take
any open slots while there. https://tinyurl.com/ClubFieldDay2022

However, it is with a very heavy heart that I have to bow out of Field Day
this year. I am just getting over Covid and my wife is still positive. I
need to take care of her first and eliminate the possibility of further
spread at the Field Day site. I'm doubly sick about this, I was really
looking forward to seeing all my old and new friends and knocking out a few
hundred QSOs for the club.

Good luck to everyone and I'll be operating from home to add to the club's
aggregate points.

[BVARC] Field Day Weekend WX

2022-06-23 Thread Rick Hiller via BVARC
Stolen from the *spacecityweather.com * web
site..

"Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

These will be three baking hot days, with high temperatures of 100 degrees,
or slightly higher, for nearly all of the metro area away from the coast.
Skies will be sunny, and rain chances virtually non-existent. A more
southwesterly flow, instead of winds directly off the Gulf of Mexico,
should help with humidity levels a bit. Even so, there are a number of
outdoor activities this weekend and we really urge you to take heat and
sunshine precautions during the exceptionally hot weather this weekend."

Lets pray that the Duhacsek Park house AC does a reasonable job. None the
less, wear a hat, light colored clothing and, lastly, bring your own cold
water *and drink it*. Partake of the tree shaded areas or visit your car
for a few minutes to cool down throughout the 100 degree days.

I think we should get a QSO multiplier of 3 for those Q's made when the WX
is 100+ HI HI

Be safe out there..The Radio Hotel W5RH

[BVARC] Field Day Articles -- On The Air magazine

2022-05-11 Thread Rick Hiller via BVARC
The current *On The Air* magazine from ARRL has a few articles about Field
Day.

Meant for the beginning ham, but certainly they are applicable even to the
oldest of OM's.

Check it out in line at ARRL.org

[BVARC] Field Day Interference Management -- NCJ May/June 2022

2022-05-09 Thread Rick Hiller via BVARC
The latest issue of NCJ, National Contest Journal, has a nice article about
minimizing interstation interference during Field Day operations. Ultra
Sharp filters and antenna management are the key points.

Find the article about the USLL, Ultra Sharp Low Loss, filters in December
2021 NCJ.

NCJ is available on-line if you are an ARRL member.
