To be specific, Dave Smudde connected to a remote desktop session and went
through the radio configuration with me and made suggestions on items to
change. I performed the changes and his suggestions proved to be a positive
resolution.

Could this issue have caused intermittent disconnects for subsets of customers?
After upgrading to 3.5.1 we had a large segment of customers have problems with
dropping wireless association in sync with each other (e.g. they all dropped
and came back at the same time), and it was repeatably the same customers, on
three different towers across six sectors.

Unfortunately, we don’t have an internal switch to flip the
connection. We have a way to communicate with the GPS chip and are
looking at ways to address this in SW.

As for the question on the hold off timer, that just allows the AP to
operate (without shutting of Tx) without a GPS signal during the
holdoff timer.

While this topic has moved to CnPilot SSID issue and CnMaestro, I did
want to chime in on the original GPS thread –

Intermittent GPS signal lost – The external puck we ship with the Aps
is a relatively high gain antenna and thus tends to be impacted more
from interference. We have seen cases of this from LTE (second
harmonic landing on top of GPS frequencies). The onboard GPS chip has
a lower gain antenna and in the case where LTE interference was the
issue we have seen a substantial difference when the puck was not
used. Unfortunately, it is a case by case situation and depends on the
environment. We are actively looking to find a better solution in
terms of an external puck while keeping costs low.

Lockup during upgrade – We have seen reports of lockup issues during
an upgrade. This is software related and the units are recoverable by
our support team via CLI access. The team will just need remote access.

Anything beyond the two issues qualify for a RMA and if you have an
unit exhibiting a different mode of failure, we would be keen to
investigate the unit here.

cnMaestro is capable of managing ePMP, PMP450, and cnPilot R and E
series routers. But they have to be managed in cnMaestro before any
config template can be pushed out to them. If you cnPilot routers are
managed by cnMaestro, then it is possible that someone accidentally
pushed a config to those routers. Best practice is to have a template
built for each customer. Then if this happens again, cnMaestro will
report that those routers are 'Out of Sync'. All you will need to do
at that point is resync the config and then about 5 minutes or less,
it will be fixed.

For the hold off time, we moved all of ours to the maximum (864000) after
having a couple of ours go offline due to the GPS. We tend to not alert
ourselves on customer outages, only infrastructure, so we missed it the first
time until customers called us. Now, we SNMP monitor GPS as well and have it
page us on a failure - but the long hold off helps.

cnMaestro is capable of managing ePMP, PMP450, and cnPilot R and E series
routers. But they have to be managed in cnMaestro before any config template
can be pushed out to them. If you cnPilot routers are managed by cnMaestro,
then it is possible that someone accidentally pushed a config to those routers.
Best practice is to have a template built for each customer. Then if this
happens again, cnMaestro will report that those routers are 'Out of Sync'. All
you will need to do at that point is resync the config and then about 5 minutes
or less, it will be fixed.

Will just selecting internal switch us to using the onboard GPS chip? Or
do we need to unplug the external puck (which would mean a tower climb)?

Unfortunately, we don’t have an internal switch to flip the connection. We have
a way to communicate with the GPS chip and are looking at ways to address this
in SW.

As for the question on the hold off timer, that just allows the AP to operate
(without shutting of Tx) without a GPS signal during the holdoff timer.

While this topic has moved to CnPilot SSID issue and CnMaestro, I did want to
chime in on the original GPS thread –

Intermittent GPS signal lost – The external puck we ship with the Aps is a
relatively high gain antenna and thus tends to be impacted more from
interference. We have seen cases of this from LTE (second harmonic landing on
top of GPS frequencies). The onboard GPS chip has a lower gain antenna and in
the case where LTE interference was the issue we have seen a substantial
difference when the puck was not used. Unfortunately, it is a case by case
situation and depends on the environment. We are actively looking to find a
better solution in terms of an external puck while keeping costs low.

Lockup during upgrade – We have seen reports of lockup issues during an
upgrade. This is software related and the units are recoverable by our support
team via CLI access. The team will just need remote access.

Anything beyond the two issues qualify for a RMA and if you have an unit
exhibiting a different mode of failure, we would be keen to investigate the
unit here.

Pretty sure you need to physically disconnect the puck since it is a
powered/active antenna that will take precedence over the receiver's
internal antenna when connected.

2018-01-30 Thread CBB - Jay Fuller

Sakid - has increasing the GPS hold time helped this case? What value do you
recommend? We are currently using 3600 seconds

When this issue occurs, does the gps recover or does it require a reboot of the
unit?

While this topic has moved to CnPilot SSID issue and CnMaestro, I did want to
chime in on the original GPS thread -

Intermittent GPS signal lost - The external puck we ship with the Aps is a
relatively high gain antenna and thus tends to be impacted more from
interference.

Lockup during upgrade - We have seen reports of lockup issues during an
upgrade. This is software related and the units are recoverable by our support
team via CLI access. The team will just need remote access.

Anything beyond the two issues qualify for a RMA and if you have an unit
exhibiting a different mode of failure, we would be keen to investigate the
unit here.

  Thanks

  Sakid

cnMaestro is capable of managing ePMP, PMP450, and cnPilot R and E series

I had that issue a few weeks ago where the 3.5.1 GPS upgrade actually locked up
the GPS board and wouldn't even initialize the board to even turn on, even
though the software was reporting that GPS was active. Opened up a ticket with
Cambium and they had to run it up to one of their engineers to fix the problem.
Ended up having to map a Public IP address to the unit and open up ports 80 for
www, 22 Inbound for SSH, and needed to make sure that 22 Outbound was open for
the device to be able to communicate with their SCP server. The engineer SSH'd
in to the device and loaded the GPS files to the unit from their SCP server and
it fixed the issue. Just remember to turn off all of those ports to the unit
after they're finished.

Re: [Cambium-users] ePMP 2000 GPS not working after firmware upgrade

2018-01-30 Thread George Skorup
I've got into the habit of rebooting any AP or SM before attempting an
update. IIRC, the package is uploaded and extracted into a ramdisk, and
there's a good chance that memory is low if it's been running for
months. I've seen this countless times on SMs. I updated a couple 1k GPS
and 2k's last week without a problem. Reboot, then update both software
banks and finally update the GPS firmware. You can open another
tab/window and watch the system log to see the GPS update in 5%
increments. It takes quite a while to reflash the GPS since it's like
4800 baud serial. I didn't time it, but it seemed longer than the 3
minutes that Cambium says it takes.

Re: [Cambium-users] ePMP 2000 GPS not working after firmware upgrade

2018-01-30 Thread Craig Oliver
Here is the engineer I worked with from Cambium to fix the GPS not working
issue and the conversation he sent me to get the radio setup for him to access:

Dave Smudde

January 22, 2018 20:46

Craig- There are a few ways to fix the radios. Basically we need to be able
to download files onto the the radio via SCP. If you have an SCP server and
can set up an account we can provide the files to load on the server do the
rest from a WebEx or TeamViewer session. We have to run some of the commands
as they provide access to the radios which are not and can not be available to
customers.

Another way, if we have direct access to the radio we can do it. We currently
do not have an SCP server on the internet but I have been able to use my
computer at home using my ISP connection and from radios pull files. Being I
do this from home I only do it after hours. To do it this way, I would need
HTTP, SSH access to the radios and SCP from the radios, if a Firewall is used.

A third way which I have done similar requests using VPN and be able to do it
from the office. I just need to have our IT department allow and configure the
VPN session to your IP.

If your radio is accessible from the internet, I just need the IP and password.

Dave

Not related, but want to spread the word…if anyone experienced this odd event.

Around 10:30am Central Time yesterday, we started receiving calls “Internet is
not working”.

I was one of the ‘victims’ myself at my home.

Common denominator – all the routers are cnPilot R200 and R200P’s.

I logged into my home router directly at my home.

SSID in the router changed to “cnPilot”.

Once I changed the SSID back to the original SSID and re-entered in the
‘password’ – it worked.

We’ve had 6 customers call in.

Asked them if their router name (SSID) had their original name or did it change
to “cnPilot”.

Each confirmed – it said “cnPilot”.

We’ve been able to remotely log in and correct things….but this is STRANGE !

Will get a ticket going with Cambium to see what’s going on.

Thanks for the GPS information, will make notes on it.

2018-01-26 Thread Gabriel Rincon
Hello everyone.

I had a GpS doing the same thing on a epmp 1000 and I replaced the external gps
with another one and it came back up.

Where can I get the firmware fir the GPS?

read the 3.5.1 release notes where it talks about the GPS update to address the
lockups. The GPS firmware is in the same 3.5.1 release package and you just
upload that for a GPS update. The GPS firmware is NOT updated when you upgrade
the radio software. It's a second manual process. The 2k's all have the
GPS+GLONASS GNSS and are much more reliable. Could very well be a h/w issue
though, but try the power-cycle first.

I have APs not even using the external puck and they're tracking 10+ sats just
fine. Primary sync is a PacketFlux injector. Remember, the receiver itself
inside the case has an internal antenna.

Hmm. Yeah, I'd open a ticket with Cambium and let them poke around in it
and possibly RMA. If it was a bad receiver flash, maybe they can recover it.

Re: [Cambium-users] ePMP 2000 GPS not working after firmware upgrade

2018-01-26 Thread George Skorup
This looks like the classic issue where the GPS is locked up, which is
obvious because it's not even seeing the receiver version/info.
Power-cycle the radio and see if the GPS comes back. If it does, then it
should say if an update is needed. If it's 3.20_8174, it needs 5.1_8174.
It's just a GlobalTop GNSS and I imagine Cambium has been working with
them to resolve the lockups. In fact, read the 3.5.1 release notes where
it talks about the GPS update to address the lockups. The GPS firmware
is in the same 3.5.1 release package and you just upload that for a GPS
update. The GPS firmware is NOT updated when you upgrade the radio
software. It's a second manual process. The 2k's all have the
GPS+GLONASS GNSS and are much more reliable. Could very well be a h/w
issue though, but try the power-cycle first.

I have APs not even using the external puck and they're tracking 10+
sats just fine. Primary sync is a PacketFlux injector. Remember, the
receiver itself inside the case has an internal antenna.

We've had issues at sites with high ~900MHz interference. If you are using
the new 2k sectors, you can run the GPS
cable in the channel on the side of the antenna with the puck stored in the

There was an issue with the previous version of GPS antennas, that came with
early EPMP1000's.  If the GPS antennas you are using are the ones that came
with an E2K then you should have the newer model though.  In any case way back
when there was an issue that the old antennas had in high noise environments.
We experienced that first hand.  We haven't see the issue since replacing the
GPS antennas though.  I think we still have the holdover timer set pretty high
though which might help you in a pinch until a real resolution is found.

I found an old graph from one of our tickets with Cambium.  For the

I recall that the newer pucks helped some, but weren't the final fix.
And yes, we set the holdover to 5 minutes now, so thanks for bringing
that up.

antennas had in high noise environments.  We experienced that first
hand.  We haven't see the issue since replacing the GPS antennas
though.  I think we still have the holdover timer set pretty high
though which might help you in a pinch until a real resolution is found.

Re: [Cambium-users] ePMP 2000 GPS not working after firmware upgrade

2018-01-26 Thread Chadwick Wachs
We fought this for months with a couple ePMP 1000 APs. We changed out
pucks, tried GLONASS vs old style pucks, changed APs, tried firmware,
etc. Nothing solved it until we shielded the cable between the puck and
the AP. Once we put that in a conduit (for as far as we could) the
problem you describe stopped. One of these was on our tower with lots
of FM, AM, UHF. We chocked that up to RF interference (our Mimosa B5
can't grab GPS either). The other AP was on a mini-pop on a residential
house with no other RF interference around that we could discover. But,
as soon as both APs had their GPS cables shielded, problem never returned.
