[cayugabirds-l] Ovid Snowy Owl photo and other NY birds/wildlife

2013-12-15 Thread Christine C. Bogdanowicz
Greetings,
I uploaded the Ovid Snowy Owl photo to my Flickr site:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/97075568@N04/

The bird was almost out of range of my telephoto lens—that is a huge barn and
quite well-set off the road. We were happy to see the bird far away from
traffic and out of danger.

Enjoy!

Hello John,
That was me ;-) and my husband Steve!

What’s the best way to share photos with the group—I have a Flickr site, and I
could share the link? I’m a newbie, so I’ll stand-by for input from the list
moderator.
THANK YOU to all who posted this sighting; what a wonderful bird!!

Many big flocks of Snow Geese passing over Mt Pleasant too, during my walk up
there just now. Also some flocks of Canadas. Interesting watching the
beautiful, ever-changing patterns Snow Goose flocks take on flying directly

flock patterns just don't seem so pretty.

Also on Mt Pleasant: a large flock of Snow Buntings.

they had a little fight together.
They fought all round the briar patch

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Those other Owls

2013-12-15 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
As Ann Mitchell is almost always up for chasing owls, one of the things
we had a chance to speculate about, on Friday, was female / male Short-eared
Owls. On Friday as we were watching them flying the light and range was good
enough to see that they almost all looked to be males. One owl in particular
had a darker brown and buffy, streaked, breast with a slightly darker overall
brown body. The under wing was typical, light wing lining with dark primary
tips, inner buffy band, another dark band, then light primary bases setting off
the carpel mark. This one we thought a female, definitely not a Long-eared. I
couldn't really compare size very well, but this one was easy to pick out over
and over. If anyone has other characteristics, easy to see in the field, for
separating males and females I'd like to hear back.
The other thing that always catches my eye is the dark carpel mark,
(comma), that always makes me think of Red-tailed Hawk especially as the
underwing is so light. I wonder if some Short-ears are missed, on a quick
glance drive-by, by the thought of "look another Red-tail", especially if the
head isn't prominent due to the angle. I've probably done that; a dangerous
habit. haha

Gary

On Dec 13, 2013, at 10:21 PM, Gary Kohlenberg wrote:

During all this Snowy Owl excitement we've been having lately I've also
been looking for those other winter visitors, Short-eared Owls. Following up on
reports I was thrilled to see one SEOW on Scofield Rd. near Buck Rd. late
Wednesday and today SIX of them on Lake Rd. / Rt-90 near the Long Point
Winery. Two of them had nailed prey on the ground and were chowing down. It was
nice to see them successfully hunting. As much as they seem oblivious to
birders watching them flying, even at very close range, that doesn't apply when
they have a kill on the ground. At that point looking at them seems to make
them distinctly nervous. I was quick to get the message and move on.

[cayugabirds-l] Driveway birding

2013-12-15 Thread Susan Fast
Sun. morning. Like Ken, I have come to appreciate the joys and advantages
of bird-watching from one's own driveway. While shoveling snow, I had 2
interesting encounters.

Directly across the road from my house is a large multiflora rose bush
wrapped around a telephone pole. This is the winter hang-out for a dozen
ENGLISH SPARROWS who then fly across to my feeders. They spend the summer
at a horse farm down the road, also hiding in a multiflora rose bush there.
I noted 2 sparrows flying rather rapidly from the yard to the bush, followed
by a COOPER'S HAWK. What happened next obliterated one of my basic
assumptions of the natural world. Having many encounters with this shrub, I
would NEVER take a flying leap into the middle of one. So I assumed the
sparrows were home free inside. But the hawk flew full speed right in after
them. I could hear its wings beating against the stems. Then the bush
exploded with sparrows, like shrapnel. The hawk emerged, but did a tight
loop and dove right back in, where it stayed for about 30 seconds before
coming out empty-taloned.

About 15 minutes later, I heard the calls of many SNOW GEESE, and looked up
to see hundreds flying east to west down the valley of Boiceville Creek. I
imagine they were headed eventually to Cayuga Lake. Quite a thrill to see
hordes flying low directly over the house.
