[cayugabirds-l] OT - lens cleaning advice
Hi - not directly bird related but I am sure many of you can help out. I have a telephoto lens for my camera that has a speck of dust in it. I have done all the external cleaning I can but it must be inside as all of my pictures result with a floating black marble in the upper right. Re: [cayugabirds-l] photo of the Potato Building
This photo of the POTATOES building on NYS-31 in the mucklands was taken facing north from a farm lane south of NYS-31 in the mucklands. The guardrail in front of the building is for NYS-31 going past it. There are several such farm lanes, and they have all since been posted against trespassing, which is sad because there was great birding from them - winter field birds, shorebirds, waterfowl, cranes, raptors. Therefore scoping from the parking area and grounds immediately around the POTATOES building, including the porch of the building, is our most valuable view of much of this area. --Dave NutterOn Dec 27, 2013, at 11:50 PM, Leona Lauster le...@lauster.me wrote:For those looking for the potato building here is a link to a photo taken in 2006.https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A4JtdOXmkWoeL;6299277A-F247-4D53-B1F1-4B114A09BD80--Cayugabirds-L List Info:Welcome and BasicsRules and InformationSubscribe, Configuration and LeaveArchives:The Mail ArchiveSurfbirdsBirdingOnThe.NetPlease submit your observations to eBird!-- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --
[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl Broome Co. Landfill Town of Maine, NY
Just found a SNOWY OWL at the Broome County landfill. It was being mobbed by crows as it sat on a power pole. The bird eventually alighted on a smaller post and eventually on the ground. The bird was too distant for decent photos but clearly seen in scope on 70X. The bird was heavily barred so likely it is a first year female. This is the second report of SNOWY OWL in Broome County this year...the first was a couple weeks ago at the airport not far from the landfill. Not sure if it is the same bird... Let the invasion continue. wow. [cayugabirds-l] FW: Swan A21
Old info, but possibly relevant. From: George Fearon [mailto:gfea...@rochester.rr.com] Sent: Friday, December 27, 2013 11:24 AM To: Linda Post Van Buskirk Subject: Swan A21 Linda, I posted the text below on Swan A21. I did have a picture with that tag number on it that I overlooked. I now have information on the other Swan that was on the North pond in Union Springs on 12-19-2013. It was also tagged but I did not get the tag number at that time. I found out from Linda Van Buskirk That the other Swan was Number A21. Linda was leaving when I arrived at the pond. She got the number from the female and I got the number from the male. Attached is a photo of A21 that I overlooked in the 75 photos I took. See the text below on the female Swan number A21 identified by Linda Van Buskirk. Hi George: A21 is a female banded as a cygnet at LaSalle Park, Burlington, ON on Jan 2, 2008. Her parents are A15 504, who nest at Tiny Marsh, near Midland, Ontario. She was seen at LaSalle on Dec 13 14, 2013. It is possible that she is interested in K33 as a mate, because previous to last year she stayed at LaSalle the majority of the winter. Last winter she was seen for two days, during the same period that K33 was tagged, and then she disappeared. Please keep us posted, and if you could share my email with as many birders there as possible, it would be great to get more sightings as it appears there are a few more birds moving south from the Ontario population. [cayugabirds-l] flights of Aythyas
About 1:45 PM or so, from Lansing Station Rd., I witnessed wave after wave of flying ducks, probably Aythyas, numbering in the thousands, flying north. I am not good at ID-ing ducks in flight, but perhaps most were Redheads. Maybe disturbed by duck hunters, who were shooting here and there in the basin starting before dawn this morning? Hunters in this area included some men and a retriever dog in a large motorized rowboat with camo blinds rigged up on the sides and bow of the boat. They had a bunch of decoys on strings outside the boat, which they could haul out and set on the top of one of the blind parts when they motored off to a new location. - Donna Donna L. Re: [cayugabirds-l] flights of Aythyas
I also saw a flock of northbound REDHEADS over the lake, but mine was a distant scope view from Cass Park before I got close to the shore. Today is the first day of the "late" duck gunning season, which will go through 12 January. Snow Geese can be shot through April 15. I learned this from the DEC Police who drove up to the lakeshore at Treman Marine Park early this afternoon while I was scoping the south end of the lake, which has been pretty well emptied of waterfowl by gunners. The police walked the shore to the SW corner of the lake to question 3 gunners who had set up in the exact spot that waterfowl rest. Their decoys were on the gravel bar and nearby in the water, their boat was tied to a tree, and a row of carcasses (1 Canada Goose, 6 Mallards, 2 Redheads) were stashed on the low tree limb on which ducks often rest and preen. As the police left, the gunners collected their decoys, and I later saw both parties continuing their conversation at the boat ramp just south of Treman Marina. I don't know what their offense was. There were also a couple boats of gunners off Stewart Park and one zooming north in the middle of the lake toward distant waterfowl. I did see a flock of 13 RUDDY DUCKS, 1 female REDHEAD, a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS and 1 HORNED GREBE near the west shore, 1 flying female GREATER SCAUP, 2 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS in separate locations on the lake, and a handful of MALLARDS. Far to the north I saw 6 more HORNED GREBES. The ice at Stewart Park had plenty of gulls, and some MALLARDS and CANADA GEESE. I saw no swans. The most unusual bird of my walk was a COMMON RAVEN soaring over the Fall Creek or Cornell Heights neighborhood. It circled climbed, did a few sideslips with wings half folded, cruised south a bit, then circled some more over Ithaca before I got distracted and lost track of it. --Dave NutterOn Dec 28, 2013, at 03:39 PM, Donna Scott d...@cornell.edu wrote:About 1:45 PM or so, from Lansing Station Rd., I witnessed wave after wave of flying ducks, probably Aythyas, numbering in thethousands, flying north.I am not good at ID-ing ducks in flight, but perhaps most were Redheads.Maybedisturbed by duckhunters, who were shooting here and there in the basin starting before dawn this morning?Huntersin this area included some men and a retriever dogin a large motorized rowboat with camo blinds rigged up on the sides and bow of the boat. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl location info
One way to find the locations of Snowy Owls is to sign up for eBird's Rare Bird Alerts, which are available on a county-by-county basis and can be sent hourly as rarities are reported to eBird. The reports include a link to the location, which is a pointer on a Google Map. I prefer to give locations according to the township in which they are located. Townships are labeled in the DeLorme atlas, and I believe road names are unique within a given township, whereas each township may have its own "Lake Road," so a road name alone can be ambiguous. Postal addresses can be deceiving, too, because the post office may be across a political boundary. --Dave NutterOn Dec 28, 2013, at 03:50 PM, Melissa Groo melg...@gmail.com wrote:It would be a great help if people would put the names of towns with the street names when reporting locations of Snowys. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl location info
By the way, the Lott Farm is on the NE corner of NYS-414 and Martin Road. Martin Road is the southern boundary of Seneca Falls township and the northern boundary of Fayette township. The Lott Farm is known in spring and summer as the most reliable location in our area for Upland Sandpipers as well as other field birds. Although the land is used for a few days for the Empire State Farm Days agricultural fair, it is private. Please ask permission if you want to enter it (315-568-9501). When I've asked, I have found them to be gracious, asking for a vehicle description and asking that vehicles stay on the gravel roads. I haven't asked to enter in winter. One can also scan some from Martin Road near the gates. A short distance east of the Lott Farm is the Finger Lakes Regional Airport. The T at the east end of Martin Road is the north-south road called Cosad Road in Seneca Falls township and Seyboldt Road in Fayette township. Seyboldt Road can also be reached from NYS-89 by going west on Cemetery Road (which can have good birding) just north of the hamlet of Canoga, or west on Canoga Street in downtown Canoga. Seyboldt Road is known in the warm season for a series of (former?) bait ponds on the east side between those two roads. The open fields in this whole area can be good for Snowy Owls and other field birds.--Dave NutterOn Dec 28, 2013, at 04:47 PM, Dave Nutter nutter.d...@me.com wrote:One way to find the locations of Snowy Owls is to sign up for eBird's Rare Bird Alerts, which are available on a county-by-county basis and can be sent hourly as rarities are reported to eBird. [cayugabirds-l] Reminder: CBC Trip Sunday
I will lead a trip up the lake tomorrow. Meet at the Lab at 8 am. Can be back by 2 pm. Because today was the beginning of late waterfowl season, several birding spots at the south end of the lake were nearly devoid of waterfowl. We will check Stewart Park and Myers, then head up the lake. I expect to make it as far as Union Springs before turning back. HOWEVER, if anyone wishes to continue on to the Mucklands to be introduced to the iconic potato building - and check out the Snowy Owls there, I'd be happy to continue. If we get that far, we may then return down the west side of the lake (Snowys along Seybolt Road). Bring a lunch and an umbrella (for the afternoon). I found the Snowy on Martin Rd. today. I called the number for the Lott Farm and got no response. It may be because of the holidays. I also found the Snowy on Aunst Rd. on top of the gas well and another on 96a , again on a gas well. They were great for viewing, but too distant for photographing. I found an immature Bald Eagle on the channel tree on Armitage Rd. I couldn't find the Snowy in the Mucklands. [cayugabirds-l] Aurora, Mucklands
Drove up Rt 90 today. Looked everywhere but no owls. Didn't realize it was opening day of duck season. What I did see - Drove down around Long Point winery and to the park. No owls but the crows were having a good day poking through the corn fields. No birds at the park. Aurora - hundreds of Canadas and black ducks on the water. Two bald eagles soared over the shoreline. Locks - there was a belted kingfisher perched on a boathouse at the last cottage before the locks. Lots of snow geese on the ice. Mucklands - stopped at the potato building on Rt 31. Far from the road to the south, snow geese filled the corn fields. To the north a flock of snow buntings landed in the field and there were 2 more bald eagles perched in a far tree in the same line as the large antenna. The mucklands are incredible! It was my first time there, I hope to go back there a lot. At the Fargo I heard that there were some snowies hanging around Genoa. Not sure where though. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Long Point Short Eared Owls
The Short Eared Owls put on a good show this afternoon in the field around the Long Point winery, with one of the birds favoring a vineyard post as a perch (the NW-most post, occasionally the SW one). The clear skies and low sun made for great photography conditions with the birds getting somewhat close and crossing the road every now and then (Diana, one of several birders there enjoying the spectacle, said they were even closer along 90, but the traffic situation wasn't great for stopping). I arrived around 2:45 when Diana pointed out the perched owl (thanks, Diana). Further down the road was an adult bald eagle in the middle of the field - a rather unexpected sighting - who eventually flew off as the first short-eared hunt began. At one point I heard some odd whooping sounds, and it took me a while to think to look up as a skein of tundra swans flew by.
