Re: [cayugabirds-l] Ithaca Golden Eagles yesterday
Hi all I watched for raptors yesterday from our south facing deck on Hunt Hill Rd., SE of Ithaca, from 8:30 til 11:30 and again 3 pm til 4 and saw nothing! Interesting that the eagles are not dispersed across the sky but indeed seem to follow flight paths. We've had eagles fly over but often they are more to the west. We are southeast of Cayuga Lake and that seems to make a big difference even on days when they are seen from Mt Pleasant, which is close by, they are not seen from our house. Oh well. [cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds
I had a spring treat early this morning. There were 3 Bluebirds squabbling over a nest box. There were two males for sure, but I could only find one female. There may have been another female that I couldn't find in those low light levels. My Bluebirds have to battle the House Sparrows for a box, but usually do win one or two boxes. I also am seeing more Robins now that there are a few green patches on the lawn. I also have a wet spot on the lawn which has provided a place for a drink and bath through out the winter. Lots of birds come for that. I had the neighborhood Mockingbird a few days ago . I have lots of Winterberry bushes which are loaded with fruit, yet I never see any birds on them. I'm wondering if the more cultivated varieties are not as tasty as the wilder ones? RE: [cayugabirds-l] Robins and cedar waxings
Many years ago while visiting my uncle in Bonita Springs, Florida - about this time of year - Robins were eating some black berries. The bushes were along the yard and as I watched the Robins some of them would flop to the ground, try to get up, stager and eventually be able to hop off or fly. They were drunk from those berries. [cayugabirds-l] Winter didn't kill us!
The bluebirds have started their chortling (sounds like Swedish to me), the starlings have picked up a Junco's trill, and two flickers are flicker-flirting near the suet (involves a lot of diving and rushing. It impresses my conure, Jim, who says oh, hi! and chicken! while he watches them through the window. We need to work on his ID skills). [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs, Mill Pond
Today about 1:15 p.m. John I had good looks at the 2 horned grebes, one spending a long time grooming. Also saw a pr. of common mergs with the male in his well-dressed suit, suitable for a suitor ... nothing COMMON about him! Didn't have time to scan much so probably over looked the canvasbacks this time. Other nos. were down from Fri. but did have gadwall, wigeons, buffles, red-heads, a ring neck 2 coots. We checked on the bald eagle nest west of Great Gully about 4:30 p.m. but saw no sign of a bird in the nest or in nearby trees. I was too cold to drag out the scope! My wife and I observed 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS at about 5:00 this afternoon from the Potato Building in the muck lands along Rt. 31. I scanned north with no success but immediately found two looking due south. I'm not certain but I feel a better place to see them would be from East Road but we did not try. [cayugabirds-l] Unknown Harlequin Duck
The raptor on your flickr page is a rough-legged hawk (note underwing shoulder patch in flight). The Harlequin Duck was still in the Oswego River north of post office at 5 PM. Had a short-eared owl along rte 31 Montezuma, by the potato barn about dusk.
