[cayugabirds-l] Encounter with a TV

2019-04-19 Thread Bill McAneny
A couple of days ago Shirley and I were driving on Cayuga View Rd near
Falls Rd (TBurg) and came upon a large bird feeding on a dead critter in
the road.  We came to a stop and the bird moved a couple of yards and
slowly launched into a low holding position a few feet above the
ground.  It was clearly a Turkey Vulture and it was clearly not going to
give up on a nice putrid meal.  I exited the car to  ID the meal and,
remarkably, the TV hung almost motionless about 5 ft off the ground only
a few feet away.  It stayed that way until I returned to the car.  Then
it was back to lunch.

The surprising thing was that the bird chose to remain so close to a
clearly sneaky and menacing human being.  A great photo op. My camera
was a mile away at home.  I should have learned from an earlier
encounter on Satterly Hill Rd north of Burdett.  There we sat next to a
TV that was perched on a fence post at the shoulder of the road.  When
we left, the bird was still there.  Still waiting to be photographed.
Strange birds.

BTW, the dead critter was a raccoon.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Upland Sandpipers

2019-04-19 Thread bob mcguire
Thanks Pete, for posting this information on the newly-arrived UPLAND
SANDPIPERS at the Lott Farm in Seneca Falls.

Now that “Uppie” season is with us again, it is worth noting that, while the
Farm is private property, the owners (primarily, I believe, Mrs Lott) do
welcome birders to drive through in search of the birds. However, they request
that one phone before entering - simply to let them know that you will be
there. Call 315 568-9501 and tell whomever answers that you are in
such-and-such car and will be looking for the sandpipers. Or leave a message.

Good birding!

[cayugabirds-l] Palm Warblers and Broad-winged Hawks

2019-04-19 Thread Jared Dawson
Out here in Trumansburg, it’s been a great spring morning. Over 45 minutes I
had 5 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS overhead, all heading in a SW to NE direction which
has been the dominant wind direction today. Also, I had both western and
eastern PALM WARBLERS foraging in two Northern White-cedars in my back yard.
Full list with pictures of warblers at

[cayugabirds-l] Possible Little Gull

2019-04-19 Thread bob mcguire
I was on the spit at Myers Town Park earlier this morning, scoping the lake for
recent arrivals. There was a moderate south breeze and significant “heat
shimmer” making distant viewing of objects close to and on the water difficult.
I first noticed four BONAPARTE’S GULLS milling around straight out from the
park. They would fly north a bit then turn south and disappear when they landed
on the water. As I followed them I noticed that all had dark gray underwings
causing me to wonder about Little Gull. Eventually I spotted a larger group of
21 Bonaparte’s Gulls flying south a bit above the water. They ALL had the dark
underwings except for one bird with noticably darker, almost black, underwings.
I lost the group in the shimmer, went to check for its possible arrival at East
Shore Park, and found nothing. I suppose I should have checked from Portland
Point first.

In any case, I’d say that there is a strong possibility of a LITTLE GULL on the
lake today, so keep eyes open.

[cayugabirds-l] Barn swallows & female RWBB

2019-04-19 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Both BARN SWALLOWS and female RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS seem to have arrived
overnight last night to the Montezuma Audubon Center! RWBBs are seen under the
feeders with male RWBB, common grackle, and brown-headed cowbirds. Barn
swallows are swooping around with tree swallows and purple martins, and also
showing interest in their typical nesting spots on top of the outside light
fixtures under the eave of the building.

[cayugabirds-l] Canada Goose nest

2019-04-19 Thread Sara Jane Hymes
Not particularly exciting, but interesting to me from the aspect of nature.
Yesterday, after walking around Cornell’s Beebe Lake, I followed the smaller
path up the stream and while looking from the fenced protective view point,
discovered across the way, a Canada Goose sitting on a very sharp precipice
about 20 ft above the water! It is in a cutaway shale area. My friend had
pointed this out to me last year, when she was fortunate enough to see the
goslings drop from the high ledge down into the water. Probably it is the same
goose, and we will anxiously watch to see if we can be fortunate enough again
to see fledglings. Yesterday, we were able to see at least 3 eggs that mama
goose was sitting on. (I never knew that geese would nest in such an area,
rather than on the ground.)
