A friend/resident who was here at Kendal for the eclipse celebration outside (I was up at Sodus Bay for it) , said she used Merlin while sitting there, and it reported a Woodcock nearby.
Could be the one we had on Mt Kendal last year. If Merlin was correct.
I forgot to ask her if it was during the dark time of the eclipse, which might make sense.

Linda and I saw one on Mt. Pleasant Road near the Observatory. It would use the 
tree near there to perch looking for food. When it flew the underwings were 
very light.

I have had 16-21 siskins at my feeders for a couple weeks now. It's pretty
cool watching them. They move so quickly, that it is hard to get an
accurate count. Good luck with the bears!

[cayugabirds-l] Indigo Buntings

For the past 3-4 days I have had an Indigo Bunting at my feeders. 2 days ago, 2 
INBUs were on the feeders. I thought that was really neat. Then today about 15 
minutes ago, there were 3 Indigo Buntings at my feeders!! That was really cool!

[cayugabirds-l] Shorebirds in Montezuma

[Ann Mitchell]

The Wildlife Drive, between 3:00-4:30. was grass. Eaton Marsh was dry. The 
corner past Eaton Marsh had both Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers plus 10+ Great 
Egrets. Benning Marsh at the beginning had water but no shorebirds when I was 
there.

East Road was the most promising shorebird area.  There were quite a few peeps 
and Yellowlegs. Everything was very distant and it was hard to distinguish the 
shorebird species. There were many Mallards, Wood Ducks, and some other Duck 
species. 80+ Great Egrets, Tundra Swans, and 13 Sandhill Cranes, plus Common 
Gallinules, Coots, and Great Blue Herons were present.

morning of birding the Danby area for Hooded, Mourning, Chestnut-sided and 
other Warblers and forest birds, plus a trek or to, to a swampy area for Soras

I was at the Montezuma main pool today and saw 2 BLACK TERNS flying in the back 
of the main pool along with Caspian Terns.  Later I stopped by VanDyne Spoor 
Road because that is where I usually spot them, but they weren’t there yet.

I stopped by the Montezuma Wildlife Drive around 4:00 today. The Visitor Center 
was the only place there were shorebirds which included Lesser Yellowlegs, many 
Killdeer, 2 Dunlin, and 3 Black-bellied Plovers. There was one Snow Goose 
there. On the back side of the drive just before the Eagle Statue, there were 6 
Great Egrets. There were lots of ducks on the main pool which I didn’t go 
through.

I will be leading an all day trip up the lake as far as Savannah on Sunday, 
meeting at the parking lot at the Lab of O at 7:30 am. We will be back by 4:00. 
Everyone’s invited. We will be mainly looking for waterfowl, shorebirds, and

[cayugabirds-l] CBC Trip to Dryden Lake

On April 8th 3 excellent birders joined me to bird Dryden Lake. The weather
started out calm and cold, changing to blustery and snowy.  On the lake we
saw American Wigeon, Mallards, Black Ducks, about 30 Ring-necked Ducks,
Gadwall, Hooded Mergansers displaying, Common Mergansers, one Red-breasted
Merganser, Pied-billed and one Horned Grebe, many Double-crested Cormorants
and a number of Great Blue Herons. As we walked the trail we saw a number
of Golden-crowned Kinglets and two Eastern Phoebes who didn't look happy to
be there! I pointed out the Bald Eagle's nest with an occupant. The other
Eagle was sitting in a tree eating a fish. There were also two Osprey
flying about. Towards the end of the path we counted at least three Swamp
Sparrows and had a great look at one perched on a stalk. In total we saw
thirty-two species which wasn't bad for a snowy, cold day.

On the way back to our cars, we ran into an SFO trip and shared the
location of the eagle's nest. That was fun.

It was only a little after 10 when our trip was over, so we all went to the
local diner for breakfast and lots of warm coffee. The was a good day!!

Linda Clougherty and I walked the Dryden walkway yesterday. There is a Bald 
Eagle nest with both eagles. We were 99% sure we heard a Osprey calling behind

[cayugabirds-l] February 11th CBC Field Trip Up the Lake

Five intrepid birders joined me for an excellent day of birding. We met at
Stewart Park in the icy parking lot and scoped out the gulls. There were no
white-winged gulls, so we headed to East Shore Park where we saw a number
of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, LONG-TAILED DUCKS, MERGANSERS, COOTS, and Dave
found a RED-THROATED LOON. After that success, we headed to Ladoga where
there were two NORTHERN PINTAILS which were added to our list. We decided
to look for field birds so we headed to Bell Dairy where there were many
SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS. Dave found a beautifully plumaged LAPLAND
LONGSPUR for us. Before heading up the lake, we stopped at the King Ferry
Bakery for coffee, etc.

Long Point was the next stop where there were many RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS,
AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, MALLARDS, one COMMON LOON on the water, and six
BLUEBIRDS and DARK-EYED JUNCOS flitting around in the trees. We stopped on
the road heading to Aurora and saw a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET among a number
of other passerines in the trees. At the Aurora Boathouse, Wes and Bob
counted 27 HORNED GREBES!

Our last stop on the east side of the lake was Harris Park in Cayuga. We
just set up our scopes to look through the Aythya flocks, when we received
a Rare Bird Alert from Jay saying the GYRFALCON was back at Hoster Road.
Well, I asked Leigh if she had ever seen one. She said '"No" so we all
hopped back in the car and Bob took to the road. Dave said Gyrfalcons only
sit for 30 minutes at a time. We arrived at Hoster Road in 20 minutes. We
watched the bird for ten minutes and it flew. How Dave knew it would fly,
is beyond me!

We next went to Van Cleef Lake in Seneca Falls to look at gulls. We found
four LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, one juvenile ICELAND GULL, and one adult
plumaged GLAUCOUS GULL. The last place we stopped was the Seneca Airport
where we saw two SNOWY OWLS - one light one and one dark one. Beautiful
birds.

I am glad the weather didn't interfere with the trip. No accidents. Only
the parking lots were icy. It sprinkled for a couple hours, but it was only
a bother to the optics. People saw some new year birds AND Leigh had 2
Lifers - Lapland Longspur and Gyrfalcon. Thanks to everyone for coming. The
trip was a SUCCESS!

[cayugabirds-l] CBC Field Trip Sunday

Hi,
I am leading a trip around the lake on Sunday the 11th from 8:00 to 4:00, 
meeting at the east side of Stewart Park to carpool. Come a little early.

The plan is to see waterfowl, Snowy Owls (hopefully), field birds, raptors, 
etc.  Bring snacks, lunch, something to drink. We will make a stop or two for a 
break and to get food.  Please dress warmly, wear boots.  Bring a scope if you

Around 5:05, I noticed a Northern Shrike sitting in the bushes. Maybe it is the

[cayugabirds-l] Tagged Trumpeter Swan

When I was at Aurora looking at 2 Glaucous Gulls on Monday (pointed out to
me by Gary Kohlenberg) there were 2 Trumpeter Swans resting on the ice next
to the lake. One was tagged so I reported the number to a banding lab.
Surprisingly, I heard back from them today, telling me it was banded on
2/24/2013 at Lasalle Park, Burlington, Ontario. The bird was hatched in
2010 or earlier.  So if you see a banded bird and you can read the number,
report it to the proper authorities so they can keep track of it. Maybe
you'll find a bird from some exotic place!

Just heard that the Red Phalarope flew. It still may be around. Anyway, after 
getting good goods at the Phalarope, I started counting Canada Geese. The 4 
Brant were still there and a CACKLING GOOSE was in with the geese flock.

I was there with Dave Nutter, Melissa and Wade Rowley, and Kevin McGann. Wade 
and I walked up closer, but the bird was still far away. We thought it might be 
a 1st winter bird. It had no white around it’s eye which was not red. I was 
told it could still be a WFIB because the red eye wouldn’t necessarily be 
seeable. I hope someone else gets to see it and ID it. Better lighting would be 
helpful!!

The Brant is still at Montezuma in the middle of the main pool with many ducks 
around it. I also noticed many fewer shorebirds than usual. The Visitor's 
Center was the only place where I located any.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow Legs at Mill Pond, Union Springs

Returning from Montezuma this evening, I stopped by Mill Pond to see what ducks 
were there. They were pretty much sleeping Mallards among the "floatsome". The 
surprising thing was seeing a Lesser Yellowlegs pecking and scurrying around on 
the vegetation!

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point Birds

Susan and I took a walk there this afternoon. Highlights were our first
ORCHARD ORIOLE of the year (maybe the first one back to that spot),
numerous YELLOW WARBLERS and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS. WARBLING VIREOS were
singing the whole time we were there. At the west end of Salt Point just
north of the Osprey platform, we counted 5 PALM WARBLERS feeding in the low
grasses. I don't remember seeing that many there before.

I spotted the owl in the back of the woods. It was very inconspicuous except 
for a noisy crow. It would be really cool if they could find a nesting spot 
there again!
