[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Yesterday--Cerulean, Canada Warblers, Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Although I imagine I'll look back on this summer as the summer I spent looking for the Curlew Sandpiper I'll try to post some other birds from yesterday's visit to Montezuma. At Towpath Rd. I heard BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, VEERY, and a singing YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. A SORA was walking around underneath the cattails. The wildlife drive held little of interest save seventeen LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL at the visitor center. Martens Tract now has algae mats that support small numbers of peeps. If you walk east past the pond to there is a dried up bog with a good mix of ducks and shorebirds. The highlight here for me was my first Cayuga County SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER. A chickadee flock on Van Dyne Spoor Rd. had a male CERULEAN WARBLER and the first fall record (in eBird) of CANADA WARBLER for Wayne County. Last Friday 3/16 there was also a good movement of Lesser Black-backed Gulls through Stewart Park. In fact, I barely found any gulls at all. There weren't any sightings reported to eBird of Lesser black-backed Gull at Stewart Park between 3/16 (group of 3 birds and hybrid) and yesterday 3/25 (5 birds). Yesterday I saw an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL moving up the lake at Taughannock SP and a pair of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS among 94 COMMON MERGANSERS from East Rd. at Montezuma. I believe what was once the first or second record of Slaty-backed Gull for Ontario was in fact also a Lesser Black-backed Gull and accepted by the entire Ontario Records committee -- just to give an idea of how challenging these birds can be. I think part of this impression is due to the extensive black tip to the bill of second-year Lesser Black-backed Gull, which creates the impression that they are bigger-billed than they really are. Nevertheless, I think if you look at the video where it is interacting with an adult Lesser Black-backed it has an extremely similar structure. I hope this will clear up any confusion. You'll note some differences in aging as well. Aging second and third-year gulls is far more complicated than standard field guides have room to illustrate. Not, however, the extensive pattern of brown in the wings and the tail pattern are normal for a 2nd-year Lesser Black-backed Gull not a third year which I belive would have much more extensive slaty feathers in the wings. There were, in fact, 4 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 1 second-year bird at Stewart this evening! Pretty amazing. This makes 5 spankingly handsome breeding Lesser Black-backed Gulls (and a second-year) presumably all heading north over Cayuga Lake today and dropped by the weather (Tim had one farther north too -- not the wintering one). I wonder where they are going and why they appear to be taking this inland route. Perhaps there is a US breeding ground and perhaps it is father west than we have tended to assume. I also uploaded some video of courting Bufflehead. Courting ducks in general are among the most captivating birds there are and Bufflehead may well be in a league of their own. I took the video below up at Long Point yesterday. Do yourself a favor in the next week or two and head to the lake and find some Bufflehead. Instead of passing your scope over them to find Long-tailed Ducks, stop and watch them. Right now they are at there best! At the very least, check out the video. Then call in sick tomorrow and go find some Bufflehead! Hi, I thought I'd post some more details about our trip up the lake on Sunday. Besides the SNOWY OWL in the evening, other highlights that Brad Walker and I observed were a close female LONG-TAILED DUCK at Stewart Park, 8 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at the bottom of Lake Rd. in Aurora, a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT at the end of Van Dyne Spoor Rd, and a COMMON GRACKLE and 110 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS at Tschache Pool. It's too bad that the Montezuma CBC was on a Monday rather than Sunday. Hi, This morning at Stewart Park I heard several BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS flying high overhead. Just now (10:22PM) I heard a GREATER YELLOWLEGS flying over the Ithaca commons. Perhaps many of the remaining shorebirds at Montezuma will be clearing out with this front. After terrorizing the now rather large AMERICAN COOT flock at Stewart Park, an adult BALD EAGLE eventually managed to catch one and fly off with it. Hi, I stopped by Stewart Park this evening at 7:00 to see what else might be around. The highlight was a juvenile STILT SANDPIPER actively foraging with a LEAST SANDPIPER next to the dock. It must be the same bird I reported this morning as a Pectoral although that bird was highly lethargic and center-weighted in its foraging motions--more like a Dowitcher. Other somewhat notable birds included a RUDDY DUCK, the GREATERLESSER SCAUP, the continuing RUDDY TURNSTONE on the white jetty, two GREAT EGRETS flying in at 7:33, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER on the golf course, my first COMMON MERGANSER offshore since early July, and at least two very vocal immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS around the swan pen. Hi, I had my biggest species total of the year so far at Stewart Park this morning with a lot of waterfowl and landbird diversity. Of particular interest were singing RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, an OSPREY, one male BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD (confirmed visually--a lot of the starlings here imitate Cowbirds!), a JUNCO, and two RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS. AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES have also arrived after being absent in the park for almost the entire winter. I'm not sure I ever photographed the same bird (camera wasn't initially readily available), but you can see individuals in these photos with very limited flank streaking and only a single streak on the undertail coverts. There has also been a WINTER WREN hanging out at the swan pen the last two mornings. Yesterday this sprightly little ball of pent-up joy was bouncing around the east side of the pen, occasionally dropping to the grass to forage. This morning it chattered loudly in response to a second Winter Wren that was calling from the jetty woods. Hi, As I was walking in today I heard and then saw a BOHEMIAN WAXWING above the north feeders with a small group of six Cedar Waxwings. Hi all, Indeed I was stunned to see 17 CATTLE EGRETS flying low over the inlet directly towards me when all of a sudden they veered westward and circled up high over the golf course. I ran back to my car and was able to take a few photos before they disappeared out of view. I missed one bird in my initial hasty attempt at a count but my photos clearly show 17 birds, which agrees with Chris Dalton's count of the birds over E. [cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe at Stewart Park
This evening there was a basic plumaged EARED GREBE swimming out near the red lighthouse jetty visible from Stewart Park. The most noticeable thing about the bird was its very steep forehead and distinctly triangular head shape, with the peak just above and perhaps slightly in front of the eye. The black on the crown extended downwards below and behind the eye, wrapping around diffusely to the back of the neck. Its back and flanks were black, with little contrast. The bill seemed rather short and thin, but it was bit too far away to notice any other details. It was swimming near a Pied-billed Grebe at one point but later drifted away on its own towards the pilings. I was able to take some video using my phone through the scope, which I will post to my flickr page tomorrow if it reveals anything useful. Hopefully the bird will stick around overnight. This was my first Eared Grebe for Tompkins County so I imagine it would be a new county bird for many others as well.
