This (or another) was on Carncross road early afternoon on the 16th, we
spotted it near the road just before a Great Egret came in and landed
nearby.

Carncross Road. That was about 1:30. Perhaps there are more than one.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Egret @ MNWR

between the photo blind and "Shorebird Flats". This is the left side of the 
road, beyond where the carp try to get into the Main Pool, but before the drive 
takes a sharp turn to the left. It was not in the open water right on the 
inside corner, but before that.

It was pointed out to me by Jill Heimrich (Braddock Bay Raptor Research) who I 
happened to pass on the drive! Definitely not a Great Egret, half the height.

Also, of the 3 initial eBird reports, Sarah’s alone had ID info:
“Not as big as semipalmated, black by eye, broken collar”
Beautifully succinct, narrowing plover possibilities to Snowy.

Matt had a narrative and alluded to photos which were added later. 

Kennedy noted Matt’s reputation, what the observers did and used, that the 
studied Piping Plovers had been gone awhile, who this bird was with, and that 
it was different, but not in what ways (no field marks or comparisons), all 
interesting, but not identifying, painting a background picture that awaited 
the portrait. 

Together they make an exciting story. Thank you to everyone on behalf of those 
of us who probably will not see the actual bird.

Forestiere an SCA/NYS Parks Piping Plover Steward was the first to put eyes on 
the bird. She then asked Matt Brown for confirmation that it was not a Wilson’s 
but in fact a Snowy. Sarah is a personal friends and was a student at Finger 
Lakes Community College when I worked there several years ago. She is a budding

whole.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl near Treman Marina

I saw this bird yesterday, sitting in hogs hole on the ground, and then
later on a tree just at the point of hogs hole and treman marina. I looked
this morning but did not refind but agree he is probably around. I got 1
decent pic which is in ebrid. It is a heavily barred youngster.

sighting was yesterday; he looked for it today, but didn't see it. still
could be around, though!

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl near Treman Marina

My brother, who works at Treman Marina at the southwest corner of Cayuga Lake 
in Ithaca, reports a sighting of a Snowy Owl along the lakeshore this morning.  
The owl may or may not be easily visible from the marina, as he says he only 
saw her/him after walking west along the lake shore (where the low water level 
has exposed some of the lake bottom) "until the large roadside ditch joins the 
lake," near the first house on Route 89.  He was able to get a decent 
cell-phone photo of the owl in flight, and another -- from a distance, but 
still recognizable -- of her/him sitting on the shore.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl Myers Point

I spotted a Snowy Owl at Myers on a spit at the mouth of Salmon Creek at
9:30 am this morning. The owl  was still in the vicinity on the point of
Myers Park at 10:45 am. It flew south around 11:00am - might be near the
Lansing Boat Yard. SO is curently  on A bright green. boating marker  by
the Myers marinas.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls on west side of Cayuga Lake

The Snowy Owl seen at the Finger Lakes Regional airport was still there today.  
I saw it about 2:30 pm.   There is second owl, which I got a better view of 
south of the airport near the corner of Seybolt and Reese Roads.   I reported 
both owls on eBird with digiscoped photos using my phone.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl, Gyrfalcon & Bald Eagles

At around 12:30PM we saw a Snowy Owl sitting on the ground next to runway
marker "C" at the Finger Lakes Regional Airport.  It would fly a short
distance from the runway each time a plane landed but then would soon return
to the same spot.  We were able to see the owl from Chadwick Road and from
Airport Road but it was a pretty distant look from either vantage point.

 

At around 1:40PM we saw a Gyrfalcon at the Seneca Stone Corporation quarry.
While looking southwest from the corner of Hoster and Stahl Roads we saw the
Gyrfalcon perched atop the nearest large mound of rocks.  We had it in our
scope for about 25 minutes and a half dozen or so people got a good look at
it. 

 

At 3:20PM three bald eagles flew low over the parking lot next to Cayuga
Lake State Park's park office.  Two flew east towards Cayuga Lake and one
flew westward.  None of the eagles had white heads/tails.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl info

Fellow birders:

I was so appalled& angered by the bad, stupid & dangerous behavior of 
birders along Martin Rd. last yr. that I deliberately left locality 
information out of my post yesterday. By today, the owl could be most 
anywhere but for those of you who know about the airport, Lott Farms & 
surrounding areas south of Seneca Falls, the snowy was along Martin Rd. 
on a post, looking all the world like a light globe in the setting 
sun.   Becky got pictures. Whether someone else saw the owl & posted it 
to E-bird, I don't know because I don't "do" E-bird.


If someone wants to notify Joe Brin about the sighting or add it to the 
FOY record, please do. Becky & I were just thrilled to be able to see 
the owl so clearly in the very short time we had to swing down that way. 
Where it might have had the magic marker markings put on top of the  
head is a mystery but last yr. someone was trapping Snowies & marking 
them so they weren't being captured & re-tallied.

At 3:45 today an unusually white Snowy Owl was sitting in what I assume 
is the same area? close to the base of the cluster of metal silos on the 
west side of Rte 414.  Definitely a very handsome bird!

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl lingers, +

Karen and I went around the lake for the first time in maybe a year. We had 
three birding goals.

1) Enjoy the waterfowl migration

2) Find a Snowy Owl, FYO for us.

3) Confirm Merlin and nest


1) That was easy.

2) 2 PM, 23 March. SNOW north of airport about 50 m north of Chadwick Rd., and 
about 500 m northeast of the end of the runway. Creamy white bird - beautiful, 
without head marking indicating previous banding. Bird was in some stumps and 
disturbed soil where a fence line of trees was being removed.

3) Thanks to one hint, I found a male Merlin near a prbable nest. The male hung 
around as others have done when I knew thay had an active nest, doing what I 
call "nest guarding". I appreciate input from others. I minimize trips to a 
nest to data collection, and do not share location of nests until eggs have 
hatched and the birds almost certainly will not desert due to humans watching.

[cayugabirds-l] snowy afternoon

Large snowflakes driven by south winds somewhat hampered visibility 
across the north end of Seneca County this afternoon.  Around 4 pm 
single snowy owl was sitting on a hillock close to the bend in the 
driveway of the Finger Lakes Airport.  (We also checked Chadwick and 
Thorpe, but not Farron Road.)  Tens of thousands of snow geese - 
probably hundreds of thousands but I can't estimate when the numbers get 
that high - were spooling & swirling in small and large flocks across 
the entire sky at 4:15.  Some fields were covered in snow geese, notably 
south of Airport Rd in Seneca Falls and off of Ridge Road in Fayette.

It's great to hear of live Snowy Owls being seen. So many young ones are
dying of starvation this year. There is a steep learning curve for young
predatory birds hunting prey and many are not making it.

About 4:45pm today Mary Jean and I were driving along Center Rd, in Ovid, 
looking for Short Eared Owls.  Unfortunately we didn't see any, but Mary Jean 
spotted a Snowy Owl flying as it landed on a power line pole along Center Rd, 
about midway between CR129 and the town dump.  We watched it for about 10 
minutes and it was still on the pole when we drove on.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl Romulus (yesterday)

I realize this is too late to be of much use to folks but there was a
Snowy Owl on the ground affording great views about 50 yards south of
Yale Farm Rd in Romulus yesterday (11/30) at around 3:30pm:

This location has been a fairly reliable area to see Snowies in recent
years (but not last year). There were also thousands of Snow Geese on
the north side of the road yesterday.

geese but I travel this way frequently and will report any other
sightings promptly.

reflective aluminum-topped trailer on Sunday afternoon and this afternoon

At 2:55 pm, the Snowy Owl is sitting on top of a black trailer down the private 
road from Goose Haven, on route 89 across from Schoolhouse Road. We asked 
permission to walk down the dirt road a bit for photos, and the gentlemen 
inside said it was fine to go in as far as the first ditch (it’s really muddy 
beyond that). The bird was very accommodating.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl

A snowy owl has been spotted by one of our visitors! On Route 89 in the town of 
Tyre (I believe), as you come out of the Montezuma NWR wildife drive, turn left 
(south). It was seen in a tree near the first pull off parking area on the 
left. Happy owling!

No luck with the Ovid Snowy Owl this afternoon but one still at the 
Seybolt/Reese Road well head. Several observers had no luck with Gyrfalcon or 
any Snowies around airport or Lott farm.
   Huge numbers of Snow Geese arriving at route 31 mucklands. GW Teal, No. 
Shoveler, Pintail and single Wood Duck new arrivals to Tscasche and Morgan Road.

Road and Cty Rte 129 in the Town of Ovid.  It was about .2 mile south of the 
intersection, on the west side of 129, about 150' from the road on a small 
rise.  A female harrier was hunting in the same large field further south.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl Rt. 96a Geneva/Waterloo area

There was a heavily streaked Snowy Owl on Rt. 96a at the height of
land northwest of Kime Rd. on top of a silo today at 4:30pm.

There were also several thousand Snow Geese in flight a few miles
south of the owl, around half in a group heading due east, and the
rest closer to Cayuga Lake in a group heading due north.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl

What a beautiful day to be out. Cold, but nice otherwise.

Is it late to have pied-bill grebes? Daughter, Becky, & I saw one in 
close at Van Cleef Lake in Seneca Falls this afternoon. Saw about 20 
each of hooded & common mergs there along with mallards & gulls & about 
300 Canadas. Didn't take time to try to do an exact count as we were 
headed to the airport to look for the owls. She spotted the newly banded 
one on a snow pile between the last 2 buildings along the runway & 
another atop the tallest silo at Lott Farms. One that was in the 
cornfield along the runway may or may not have been another or could 
have been the newly banded one, scared by the planes with pilots 
practicing landing & taking off.


Struck out on the gyrfalcon. Sun was wrong to look for it or the shrike.

We also saw 2 female harriers & 1 male hunting in the field along the 
runway. Ran out of light to go look for the shrike.


Last Fri. (30 Dec. 2016) when we were leaving the airport & going out on 
414 we saw thousands of snow geese overhead heading towards Cayuga Lake. 
Quite an impressive sight.


This afternoon we noted unknown swans, probably tundras, overhead & on 
the water between Cayuga & Mud Lock.


Has anyone checked down Genoa way for snowy owls? Becky found three down 
that way about 3 winters ago.


Water level on Factory St. pond is higher than I've ever seen. Mill pond 
level is also up. I have seen evidence of sharp teeth of a beaver along 
Mill. More gadwall are on Mill than we've seen in many yrs.. Redheads 
are there in increasing numbers along with some buffles & A. wigeon.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl

Hi All,

The bird that was attacked by the Gyrfalcon was one of the birds that has been 
banded. It has a really dark head, but upon viewing it on the computer, I could 
easily see a color difference in the dark head from the body. A check with a 
friend who is familiar with the banding process confirmed it as a banded bird 
which is marked with a black magic marker so it will be recognized as one 
already banded.

[cayugabirds-l] snowy, shrike, snow geese

Mary Jean, Phil and I took a drive up to the Finger Lakes Regional Airport on 
Airport Rd. (or Martin Rd?) Seneca Falls to look for a snowy owl this 
afternoon.  We felt fortunate to find one along the west side of the runway, 
quite a distance from the road.  We then found a Northern Shrike along Seybolt 
Rd, in the area with the grown-over ponds, which is just west of Canoga.  As we 
headed toward home along Kings Corners Rd, we found another Snowy Owl in a 
field on the east side of Kings Corners Rd, just north of Ogden Rd.  Kings 
Corners Road is apparently also known as Fayette Varick Townline Rd.  A sizable 
flock of several thousand Snow Geese was in a field bounded on 3 sides by Rt 
414, Peterman Rd and Thrope Road.  Along the way this afternoon we also saw 
several Red Tailed Hawks, Kestrels and on Coopers Hawk.

Having seen this bird yesterday I can well understand why the 
misdentification.  When looking through a 600mm camera lens from a 
distance it did seem to have the markings of a Snowy. It was only after 
seeing it through a scope did I see the red tail and head.  Without 
these two positive identifiers I can well understand someone, even an 
experienced birder, making the wrong identification. I do not think this 
hawk is an albino though as it did not completely lack pigmentation.  
Leucism seems to be more likely as there was not a total lack of 
colorization, it plainly had the markings of a Red-tail, just with 
mostly white feathers.

I remember after moving to Danby in 2000 that I mistook the now-deceased
white Red-tail for a Snowy. I had to go home for bins and go back to
discover my error. That bird was whiter than any Snowy I have ever seen. I

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl=strikingly white Redtail Hawk

I checked out the Snowy Owl report and found the bird after getting conflicting 
directions from Thompson Veg farm workers.  It is actually a strkingly 
beautiful Red-Tail Hawk, with markings that make no genetic sense to me.  It 
has a brilliant adult-red tail, lots of dark streaking in head, a nice sharp 
breast line of dark feathers, and everything else is snowy white, not 
leucistic/tan, but white.  No wonder it was mistaken for a Snowy Owl.

Currently perched in the tallest bare tree along Fall Creek as it winds E from 
Herman Rd, which extends S from Fall Creek at the Veg Farm, connecting you with 
38 going to Dryden.  The tree is 2 bends of the Creek, a tall fairly full oak 
next to a poplar?, a stand-out bare tree next to the Creek.  Bird can be hard 
to see, and was just now on the SE part of the tree.  I got looks from along 
Herman Rd, and from the crossing point of the Creek, you can actually see its 
head.  From farther back N, you can see the lower body.  At least that is how I 
left it..and it seems pretty solid right now.

No crows are bothering it, and one normal Red-tail did a circle over it earlier 
but didn’t stop. It preened and may be just watching for prey.

I got some distant pictures, enough to remove doubts about owl vs hawk.

Just got a call from the manager of the Thompson Veg. Research Farm that 
a SNOWY OWL is hanging around the farm.  The farm is just outside 
Freeville on the road that goes to McClean.  It was last seen in a 
cherry tree on the south side of the road near Fall Creek.  Isn't this

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Egrets moved on

I was at Knox-Marsellus until about 7:30 PM watching the pair of Snowy Egrets 
as they lifted off the marsh, circled a couple times, and headed south. I was 
unable to relocate them after a quick look at Mays Point & the Wildlife Drive.

This Snowy Owl continues in the same spot today. Didn't see the one on
Martin Rd. but it was raining pretty hard and tough to see. On Seybolt
Rd, there was also a male Northern Harrier.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl and the wierd Turkey

Hi all,

I too made a journey to Seneca Falls to see the Snowy Owls. It is amazing, I 
think it is the fourth year the Snowy owls have showed up in the same vicinity.


I did see the Snowy Owl and Kevin McGown on Seybolt road. It was rather at some 
 distance. SO I thought may be the one on martin Road would be closer. Actually 
I am not even sure if I saw one. At a very far distance among the cows, I 
thought I saw the owl. But did not see it move. So I am not hundred percent 
sure if it was an owl or not.


On the way on Seybolt, near Martin road, I saw a bird atop a bush, I was 
excited and was hoping it would be a No. Shrike. But as I  pulled my car closer 
to it, I found  it had round head and breast  I knew I was looking at a No. 
Mockingbird, which was mocking a shrike.


Then at the corner near Canoga Rd, I saw a single turkey. I had seen it when I 
went towards Martin road earlier. As I saw it again in the same location I 
thought I will watch it. Initially, it hid behind the trees and occasionally 
tried to watch me like a peek a boo game. As I waited it became bold.  I pulled 
 my car on the wrong side of the road closer to the turkey. It looked like a 
young first year bird. The turkey walked up to me and said something in its own 
language and started looking at its reflection on my car. I did not want him to 
peck my car, so I put my hand out to shoo it away. It thought I am feeding it 
or something equivalent so it came closer to my window and raised it neck to 
see me from the window. It hung around my car and picking something off my car 
tires. It would not move away form the car but often went to the front of the 
car. So I had to get out of my car and scare it around the car to the back of 
the car, so I could drive away. But it was not afraid of me, but just walked 
ahead of me looking expectantly.  I felt sorry for the lone turkey. Probably he 
wanted someone to do turkey talk.


 May be Gladys knows the history of this turkey, whether it was raised by hand 
on the farm.


And at home around 10.00 am I heard a Raven croak above my house. It hung 
around for quite sometime in my neighborhood.


I thought of stopping for the Pacific Loon, but as there was a screening of 
Downton Abbey in Cinemapolis, I decided to skip the stop. I enjoyed the first 
episode of the season 6. It Is very different to watch on a big screen versus 
22 inches screen.

Laura Stenzler  my daughter, Becky, are_just south of Pumpkin Hill 
Bistro_ (/south of Aurora/) looking at the owl sitting atop a snow drift 
in the field on the_west side of Rte. 90_. The co-ordinates given below 
are correct BUT the location Cayuga, NY is not.

Becky said a row of spruce trees is just south of the  apple orchard  
the owl is between the spruces  Lake Rd. that goes down to Long Point SP.

Hope this clarifies the  location for anyone mystified by Lake Rd. 
fields, Cayuga since there is no Lake _ROAD_ in Cayuga  no fields are 
along Lake St. in Cayuga.

Becky said the owl is easily seen from Rte. 90 but the west wind is 
really bitter.

The eBird location ..., Cayuga, New York refers to a place in Cayuga County, 
New York State. EBird recognizes counties and states and adds them to all U.S. 
locations, even if you already use them in the name you give to a location. 
EBird does not sort out other municipalities to add to the name, but you may

Had a heavily barred Snowy Owl in the field on the SW corner of 96A and Kime 
Rds this morning about 7 AM in the town of Fayette. No luck finding the 
Gyrfalcon around Seybolt Rd, but did have a male N. Harrier in the area, and an 
American Kestrel (along with many more RT Hawks).

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls in Varick/Romulus

Yale Farm Rd. in Varick/Romulus (east of junction with Rt. 96a)
continues to be a good bet for SNOWY OWLS. On Monday around sunset,
the heavy streaked owl was in the middle of the farm field east of the
McGrane Rd. intersection (google tells me this is in Romulus). Being
so dark overall, the bird was quite conspicuous on the snow (it even
appears to be wearing a wool cap!).

This morning around 8am, an almost all-white individual was on a power
line right on Yale Farm Rd. about 1/4 mile east of 96a.
